Hi looking for a bit of help. i have wifi connection, and cannot use ethernet cable in my location My question is Will a wifi extender like https://www.netgear.com/home/wifi/range-extenders/ex2700/ Be good Or is a wireless access point better like this https://www.tp-link.com/us/home-networking/access-point/tl-wa901n/ Or is it better just to get a pcie wireless card Like https://www.asus.com/networking-iot-servers/adapters/all-series/pce-ac88/ So yeah what’s gonna give the best speed and connection consistency out of all these wireless options And will there be much improvement from a wireless usb dongle thanks Any help appreciated Cheers Loz

So I work for a small window cleaning company and my boss approached me about seeing if I could extend his network range for him. He has a large workshop building that sits 100 FT behind his house, and inside is his office were his internet connection is (Modem-> Router-> 2 Computers and a NAS). But inside his house, 100 FT away, he only has a WIFI repeater to provide signal for his pc and other devices in the house. This current set up isn't working for him and his signal is terrible. My plan is to bury some Cat-6 Shielded Cable between the shop and his house, and set up a secondary router in his kitchen as an extended access point. What my problem is, is that I see many other forums and tech articles that talk about having to port forward and other things in order to access the NAS from the secondary router. But is that only if I intend to use the Secondary as a Subnetwork? And if I just go ahead and set up the secondary router as nothing more than an access point. Will the NAS that is connected to the primary router in the shop still be accessible to him from inside his house?

So my house has 1 router, and everyone uses it, of course. I'm a huge gamer so I want the best wifi connection as possible, but that isn't possible sadly. I do have a small Netgear extender, but it is not as impactful as I thought it was, and "boosts" my wifi speeds up by very very tiny amounts. Also, our modem/router is in our basement, and I am on the second floor, or third floor if you count the basement. I've been doing some research and found that Access points might be the way to go, but I can't find any that work with what I want. Also, I know Wifi mesh extenders are a option, but I've seen the reviews and they last for about a week or so before dropping speeds, etc. Please recommend Access points or other extender types that are VERY WIRELESS, meaning I don't have to wire it to my router or modem, and that it has very good speeds and travels far. Thank you!

Good afternoon everyone. I need some advices about choosing between an PCIe Wifi Adapter vs. a Wifi Extender with an ethernet connection to my PC. Assume that they both use the AC1200 band and support dual 2.4 and 5ghz, which option would be better in term of network speed, reliability and provide better signal pickup distance at 5ghz? Yes I have also considered running ethernet cable and using powerline adapter but because of the layout of my apartment and electrical socket placement positions, both of these options are not feasible for my situation. Thank you very much for your help.

I'm building a new pc for gaming and such but I'm having the issue where my wifi modem is in the lounge connected to the Foxtel and I can't and don't want to have my pc in the lounge so how can I have my fast Ethernet cabling elsewhere in the house. Would a wifi extender work?

Problem description: My Internet provider has provided me with a router with wifi that for most of the day works more or less good covering my small apartment to most of its extension. During the night it seems one of my neighbors is using a wifi extender that produces interference in my wifi to the extent of making me walk to the living room in from of the router to be able to access google? Actions taken: I called my service provider in order to get a solution to my issue but after trying different settings they state that the interference if too high and the best I can get is not enough to have me navigate on google from my bedroom witch is virtually right beside the router separated by a wall no thicker than around 14 cm. Actions needed: I am seeking for help on what should I buy in order to solve the issue, I have a smart tv on my bedroom and I would like to be able to see 4k videos on it via internet/wifi Along with my tv there are 2 more bedrooms each with a smart tv that I would also like to provide a good wifi access, in total we have around 8 live users/connections in between PC/phone/tv Cable extension is not an option so I have to stay with wifi, I am basically asking for a wifi solution with enough strength that I could potentially even think on navigating from it outside of my apartment. I am not sure of where to start, should I bug a new router? or a wifi extender? The router I have works fine, provided that you are close to it but I want something better than fine, 4k by the way only works if you are the only one connected to it so it kind of like struggles given the number of users. About budget, I am kind of like looking for something around at most the price of a TP-Link AC3200 (around $193-$200 usd) if possible something cheaper will be best. My level of understanding: (not much) I am not sure I feel to ok on setting stuff up to much, I am good on LAN networking concepts to the extent of setting a DHCP server or configuring a network QOS deployment along with using and setting up trunks/vlans etc and even some routing and routing protocol understanding though I am reluctant I would need any of that I have never configured a home router before nor I am sure if the router itself is what I need. Wireless lan concepts I am in 0, so I am not sure of what should I look for in terms of wifi coverage, I have read that I should aim for mu-mimo/beamforming tech and that it should be compatible with802.11ac but I am not sure once having the opportunity of how to setup this for taking the best advantage of it. Please consider that if I get a repeater it would be sited right next to the router, the apartment is not that big and I am not interested on having satellites lying around, not to mention that even if I would they would need to be set very close the router anyway. Appreciate your help!

I have purchased a router and a range extender from Netgear a pretty refutable company. The router is the RAX15 and supports wifi 6. Originally I intended to put a range extender, the EX7700, so that it could reach my computer better. With the range extender I tested it in many different places around my house (my bedroom is the furthest away at:~256 sqft.). The best place was next to my old modem. If I placed it anywhere in-between or closer to my bedroom/setup I get a major drop off in internet speeds. I get 200Mbps 10up wired Ethernet. So when I added the Wifi extender I wasn't expecting to keep the same amount of performance I had when I was wired. Once I introduced the new router I could finally put the extender in a mid point between me and my router/modem and it's actually only 17 feet away from me and I retain about 110+Mbps 10up. Yet I still get random points of lag where I completely lose internet for a few seconds and it comes back again. I tried many different place to put the extender but right now it's what works best router/modem---26feet---wifi extender--17 feet--- me. My major problem is that even with a somewhat decent internet setup how come i still get lag. This can't be too many people on the internet because it happens more often when no one is home or is asleep. Do I invest in an entirely new mesh system, add another extender in-between, or is it just the products? (my home doesn't have very many walls either they both are in 2 different living rooms) TL;DR: I'm having internet problems but I've spent so much money and done so much research to find the optimal spots and I'm still lagging in my games even when I'm the only one on the internet at times.

My PC is on the second floor of my house so an ethernet cable will not reach from our router so I am using a simple TP-Link powerline adapter to play games. My internet speed is 300mbps download. With my currect TP-Link powerline adapter I am only able to get about 40-55mbps down and nowhere near the 300. I am wondering if getting this Netgear Dual Band WiFi Range Extender will be faster than my current powerline adapter. Can someone explain how there are ethernet ports on the Netgear wifi extender when it's not being plugged into anything? It seems like it only plugs into a wall power outlet and that's it. Does the WiFi extender get the wifi signal and just convert it into ethernet ports? I know that with powerline adapters there is some signal loss due to the wiring in my house. Would I theoretically see faster wired speeds from the Netgear Wifi Extender (plugged into the ethernet ports) or would it be the same speeds that I am currently getting. Thank you !

Would appreciate any help you can provide me. I know that WiFi extenders are not great, but sort of working with what is available: So, first a wifi extender was hooked up in our sanctuary a few months ago, unfortunately, with some brick walls the wifi wouldn't connect. Over the past month he then ran an ethernet cable from the wifi extender to our router. However, whenever it is plugged in to the router I don't get internet on my computer. At first, it required a log-in to NetGear (the wifi extender). However, now he has switched extenders (he added another one to do the whole sanctuary and decided just to switch them out so the new one is connected to the router via the ethernet cable and the old one is connected to that wifi extender via wifi). Now, it seems to just stop all internet flow, I don't even get a sign-on. Oh, also, there is still no internet even in the sanctuary. When I try to connect with my computer or tablet to the extender it says connected without internet.

Hi, I have a device without wifi card that I would like to plug into my router using rj45 cable. However my router is too far away, so I'm wondering if I can buy a wifi extender with a rj45 port like an Asus RP-N12 and just plug my device into it.

Hi, just moving into a new university home and the WiFi isn't the best so was hoping to add a powerline adapter with built in WiFi extender in order to give my room an ethernet port (as the router is on the other side of the house). So was just wondering what would be my best option. Thanks in advance for the help.

Hi, heumm.. so yeah. I have no idea what my dad did with our connection, let me explain.. Okay, so we have our router in the basement, its not in the best place that it could be, Our walls in the basement are surely made from concrete so its not the best to let the signal threw. But here's the problem; So the router is in the basement, but my dad bought and extender to "bring" the signal up ( on our 2nd floor upstairs ) but with and "wall plug" so that the internet goes trough the power line. But I dont get why we dont have any connection in the basement where the router is and the "extender" made like his own "access point". So if I'm upstairs ( 2nd floor ) where the extender is, I have a descend connection, but if I go downstairs ( basement ) I barely have any bars.. Its kinda difficult to understand.. Someone could help me?

So this happened a while a ago but I never really bothered to ask until now. I bought a Wifi extender for the basement as the connection is really poor with the router being upstairs + thick walls. Setting it up was quite easy but after using it for a few minutes I noticed that the internet isnt as fast as it was before. Afterwards I used the speedtest app on my phone to get a roughly estimate of the internet speed just to see if there really is a difference, and there was! Area A: The range of the router wifi. Area B: The range the wifi extender created/extended. Whenever the wifi extender was plugged in, the internet speed in B was much faster and A was really slow. If it's not plugged in A had it's 'original' speed back. I'm pretty sure thats not the purpose of a wifi extender so is there anything I can do by accessing my router via web or etc.? I still have a TP-Link Wireless N Access Point TL-WA801ND if its of any use in order to extend the wifi. Wifi Repeater: http://www.tp-link.us/products/details/TL-WA850RE.html Access Point: http://www.bootic.com/tp-link/electronics/networking/bridges-and-routers/tp-link-tl-wa801nd

US http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00T5XQE3U/ref=sr_rp_1?m=A3NIHS6OXAR0HL&ie=UTF8&qid=1457645799&sr=sr-1&keywords=ravpower UK http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00TI3WQJS?keywords=ravpower&qid=1457646775&ref_=sr_1_10&sr=8-10 I love this device. It's such an handy device, and it demolishes these wifi external hard drives that are either bulky or the wifi does not meet up with the demand of the stream, but this device does. In this review I have used IOS, and Android devices. Worked flawlessly for IOS. Now if you are having video skipping/(Hic ups) this is not due to the device, since I did an test, and found out my hardware was just not powerful enough for one device, but the laptop played flawlessly that same file. Also you can charge your devices using the USB. It has an 6000 mAh batteryPros:1) Can stream large files ( 1080p FLAC), so this is better than most wifi external hard drives.2) Has a larger battery life than those hard drives. (Stream 12 hours. I used an 256 SD card, and did not charge anything on it.)3) The video player launches fast (Filehub plus)4) Stream movies from many devices. So if you are on an road trip your friends can connect to it (Must have file explorer hub)Cons:1) Player does not have subtitles. Which is an major disappointment, but you can use other 3rd party apps. Which are limited. For IOS, I am using OPlayer Lite, since the other players are an hit or miss for subtitles. OPlayer Lite streams very slowly, so long buffer times, but there are no issues once it plays.2) You cannot directly access the folder from file explorer to modify files. You have to use the app on computer or phone to add content or remove. During the upload it can fail sometimes (Due to the connection is lost)... I invested in an USB to SD card reader, so it eliminates the problem.3) The easy movies icon often does not show the stuff you have uploaded to the device. This is an simple fix. Have to use the explore option and open to the folder that has your movies. From there it will play.

Hi I was wondering is there a way to have the same ssid as the router on the wifi extender. This is because currently i have 4 set of ssid and 2 from the router and 2 from the extender. Is there a way to have only 2 ssid where the wifi extender copy the router channel? Currently, i am using Netgear nighthawk and Netgear ac1900 wifi extender. Thx

Hi all, I'm interested in getting a NAS storage device. I've searched for one that would be able to be connected to my network via wireless instead of a standard ethernet cable, as my router is in a pretty awkward postion. Having looked, I don't think that there are any NAS solutions that can be connected to the router wirelessly? A solution, I have seen suggested is connecting the NAS to a 'wifi bridge.' Could I use something like this - https://www.amazon.co.uk/NETGEAR-EX6150-100UKS-802-11ac-Extender-External/dp/B00V6B9XS2/ref=sr_1_18?m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1466092592&sr=1-18&keywords=WiFi+Bridge connect that to my wifi and then connect the NAS to the ethernet port on this device? Thanks Rob

Hello, I joined this forum to get tips on how to improve internet range at my home. We have a 20mbps connection. Our main router is in the living room, The other bedrooms are down the hall from the living room, so reach is quite poor. For this reason I've placed a Belkin dual band extender in the first room closest to the living room. It was working pretty well, until one day the speeds from the extended network dropped by 80%. Before that I was getting the same speed on my extended network as my router (how? i don't know). My Linksys AC1200 smart wifi router has dual band...so I enabled the 5ghz band on the main router and the extender thinking it would improve the speed, but it didn't..so I figured 2.4ghz was the issue and disabled the 2.4ghz on the extender and set it to extended just the 5ghz ac wifi while my main router had both 2.4ghz and 5ghz enabled. And I got my speed back. But my problem is that some devices don't support 5ghz ac..like my Note 3 (for some reason), PS3, PS4, PS Vita and Chromecast...If 2.4ghz speeds were okay on the extender, I wouldn't have an issue, I've tried many ways to improve speed on the 2.4ghz band, but with no luck. What can I do? is a passthrough powerline with wifi a good option? I live in a fairly solidly built apartment building, I'm not sure if electrical disturbance would be an issue. If powerline adaptors are the way to go, would it be safe to plug in the TV, PS3, PS4 via extension cord on the passthrough socket on the powerline adaptor? help..

Hi LinusTechTips, I want to know what is the area that my WR740N wifi router can covers up to because I want to take two WR740N as my wifi extender and receiver. I will take the first one as a normal router but I will turn the second one into a repeater mode. That's means the first one is act as a WiFi extender and the second one will act as a receiver and share the internet to my other location. The distance is around 170 meters. Will this probably going to happen?
