Hello guys, recently, i have noticed that my 16 TB HDDs (which I cant backup at the moment), make this really strange noise, always when booting up the PC, and sometimes, randomly while its on. When it happens while its on, the file explorer suddenly stops working for a few seconds, doesn't respond, and then, the sound stops, and it starts working again with no problem. This happened with just one HDD a while ago, and then, after I had to change the PSU for another unrelationed problem, the other one started beeping, as well. The only thing that they both have in common, (aside from the brand and storage, two Seagates IronWolfs Pro), its that I noticed that the SATA data cables, dont get completely plugged in the HDDs, both of them are a little loose, even when they have those metal plugs that should make them get stuck when plugged correctly (they are pretty stuck in the MOBO), but not in the HDDs. Maybe that could be a problem of the space of my case, which is a bit small, but the SATA power and data cables arent really the most flexible, and the usual slot which are in cases for the storage isnt always the most comfortable for the cable management, but i would like to know if someone knows what could be causing this noise and the stuttering. I took some videos to catch exactly the type of sounds they produce, and i will share the links to YT, to provide a better understanding. I already did some basic tests with Crystaldisk, which told me that the HDDs were in good shape (they have a little over one year of use). Also, I must clarify that I'm using the Y-splitter in the SATA power cable for the connection to the PSU for both HDDs. PD: Sorry if the question isn't that well redacted, but my english isn't pretty good. PD2: I already created this same thread in Tom's Hardware, and while they gave me good advice, the guy who answered also couldn't diagnose the exact cause of the sound, and while I think it could be an issue of the connection, I don't know any way of truly verifying it. I’m sorry for the wall of text, it’s complicated. On my desk I have: two monitors (it happens with both), a laptop (+ dock), a desktop, and a mixer (and some other stuff but I don’t think those are relevant? feel free to ask if you think they might be). Whenever I plug a monitor into the laptop (or rather, its dock), the audio from that same laptop gets noisy, regardless of which monitor, video in, video out, or audio out. The desktop has no such issues, by using my mixer I verified it is only the audio from the laptop. That being said, if I unplug the monitors from the desktop the noise goes away. So, both computers being connected to a monitor (can be the same or different ones) creates the noise. Bypassing the mixer has no effect Now to make things more complicated: I have earbuds with a mic, I use those old school audio Y-spitters to separate the mic from the audio, one at the earbud end and one at the other end to plug into my iPad (that way I can still pause by using the button in my earbuds and put my mixer in between on the audio side so I can listen to my desktop, laptop, iPad, etc. all at the same time), whenever I unplug the mic side the buzz goes away and returns when I plug it in and it does not need to be the iPad, I can also plug the mic into the laptop or desktop, it creates the same noise, it can even be plugged into just the splitter without the iPad. Furthermore, to make things really weird, I can unplug everything (even power) except the video cable from the monitor while keeping the noise (though it is stronger with power connected). The noise could probably best be described as a whine, similar to coil whine, but less stable (it varies in pitch and volume). Here, have a listen: Weird noise.m4a So, to summarise, both computers being connected to a monitor (can be the same or different ones) AND connecting the mic from my earbuds to anything creates the noise, bypassing the mixer does nothing, the noise is only present from the laptop, it happens regardless of power to the monitors and desktop (laptop can’t be unplugged because the dock only works when powered) I’m at a loss, if anyone could point me in a direction where it starts making even the slightest bit of sense, I would be very happy... perhaps interesting: Laptop: HP ProBook 6560b Dock: HP 2012 90W Docking Station Monitor 1: LG 27GP850 Monitor 2: HP Z23 G2 Mixer: Behringer Xenyx 502 Earbuds: Apple EarPods Desktop: Custom

whine COIL WHINE HISS WHEN GPU PLUGGED IN
L4G_NAToR posted a topic in CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory
I recently upgraded my PC, following are the specs: CPU: Ryzen 5 7600 (NEW) Motherboard: Gigabyte B650M BS3H (NEW) RAM: GSkill 16x2GB @ 6000Mhz CL36 (NEW) SSD: XPG s70 Blade 1TB (NEW) GPU: Gigabyte GTX 950 (OLD, approx 4 years) PSU: Silverstone 500W 80 Plus (OLD, approx 2 years) I have noticed that there is mild COIL WHINE (constant hiss) when I log into Windows, it lasts for a while and stops randomly. Sometimes it lasts for an hour and sometimes for a couple of minutes. There is no noise when in BIOS. Yesterday night, I disconnected all peripherals & fans from the system I found that it makes the noise only when GPU is plugged. This noise travels through my motherboard's audio jack (Green & Blue). How do I fix this and stop it from traveling through the motherboard's audio jack ports? I don't mind connecting over a call to discuss this further over the weekend if anyone is up! Any help is highly appreciated! Thanks! WhatsApp Video 2023-08-09 at 21.34.38.mp4- 6 replies

(I have posted this on Reddit's TechSupport sub, but I thought here could be a good place too! So this is basically just copypasted from there lmao. Also sorry for phatt text) My audio setup right now consists of:- PC (Voicemeeter) --> Aorus X570 Elite (built-in soundchip, rear line out) --> 3.5mm-to-RCA --> Yamaha R-N602 --> Bookshelf speakers/headphones -- also MSI RTX 2070Super, fwiw Now, it's harder to notice when listening through speakers, but when plugging headphones into the reciever and listening to the PC's output, there is an audible whine. What I eventually noticed, is that whenever something happens on the PC screen, whenever content being displayed changes - I scroll a window, I move the cursor, I hover over a link and the displayed pixels change - there is a buzzing sound on top of the whine. This extra interference only happens whenever something happens on screen. Which leads me to believe they are linked.I have heard that sometimes, motherboard soundchips can get intereference from the video card ? Which in this case would make sense as the interference is worse when things are happening on-screen, i.e, the graphics card. So, on the rear of the Yamaha receiver, there are the RCA inputs. I have a turntable plugged into the PHONO, and my PC's 3.5mm to RCA plugged into Line 1 (I mentioned this because the sound is also audible when switching to the Phono output on the reciever, almost like all the RCA ports are linked. Other types of output are not affected). So I am wondering, what can I do about this? I am using an external receiver, so it seems like the problem is occuring before the sound is even leaving my PC. So this issue would also carry over into other DACs and Amps right? How do I prevent it? EDIT IN RESPONSE TO A COMMENT:- I've done a little more looking round, and I seem to have found a thing called 'coil whine'? Which seems to be the term for the interference from the electronic components, especially between the GPU + motherboard. Most sources say the big annoying thing about coil whine is that it's audible THROUGH the PC case from the components. I don't notice that as much due to ambient sounds etc. So it seems like this coil whine is 'leaking' into the audio signal ? Another thing with coil whine was, people said it is noticible at high FPS. My monitor is 165Hz. So I did a little test, and I dropped the refresh rate to 60Hz, and I noticed that the whine I was hearing changed. It was still there, but almost like its frequency changed. I could almost hear dicrete buzzes, where once the refresh rate was raised to 165 again, these discrete 'buzzes' merged into one sound, due to the increasing frequency(?). If that makes sense? So just another pointer that this looks like what I am dealing with. I dug out and plugged in this little USB PnP sound device. I thought this would be a step in the right direction, since the output is being moved away from the noisy components, but the whine was still audible when connecting my 3.5mm-to-RCA into the USB device, and the RCA end into Line 1 of my reciever. I tried both front and rear USB ports, with the whine in all of them. I'm just thinking of options, and which ones would work. I don't know the quality of that USB sound dongle lol, so perhaps a ~new cheapo USB sound card --> reciever~ would be okay? Or those ferrite cable clips? (I do actually have an interface for my XLR microphone! But I only ever use the microphone for things like Discord calls etc, rather than recording so I never actually get to hear if any whine is present in that lol (however never had any complaints), and I have noticed that my mic interface's USB cable has one of those built in, perhaps controlling the whine of my mic input..?) I was thinking of getting a decent desktop USB DAC, but I don't want to spend on one of those if this whine will just carry on over into that too..!!

Hi everyone! First post on here. I'm a noob who just finished my first 'proper' build. Everything is going fine, with the exception of the following issue.... Every time I start up/wake up my computer, the high-pitched noise that can be heard in the video I've linked is audible after about 5 minutes. After it starts, it doesn't stop/go away until I put my computer to sleep. It's a high-pitched, inconsistent noise that reminds me of the read/write sounds that hard drives make. It can be heard most loudly in the area around the CPU. I have 16 GB of RAM and one M.2 SSD and one SATA 3 SSD installed (no hard drive). It's loud enough to be audible when I'm sitting at my desk about a metre away and the case is sealed. Bizarrely, I can hear the noise even more loudly through my headphones when I plug them into the 3.5mm jack and don't play any audio through them. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to what might be causing it and what I might do to fix it. I'm worried that it's something serious that I should be looking into. Im not sure if its from the PSU or graphics card, But its freaking me out, Its only there under load, and gets louder as the GPU begins to be under load. Ignore the fans, and listen for the eletrical noise. The graphics card is a gtx 1060 3gb, from evga i think. Is it coil whine? Or is it something else? Should i replace it? or is it fine to keep it for another few years?

So the last couple of days I’ve noticed this sight buzzing noise from my computer , most noticeable when loading into game lobbies such as warzone and battlefield 5 , now I’ve run stress tests on aida64 for the ram cpu and gpu none of which re create the noise , I’ve got down and had a listen to the computer to see if I can pinpoint the noise , my guess is power supply (Corsair cx650m which is new since January ) all temps in game are good so I’ve no real red flags as to what the problem may be ? CPU has a light over clock as well as the gpu but that was done about a month ago so I don’t know if that’s the culprit. I haven’t bumped up voltages or messed with power limits. ryzen 3 2200g @3.825 Ghz saphire pulse rx580 4gb at 1436mhz

Hello, I recently bought a new pair of headphones from JBL to use with my new phone which doesn't come with a headphone jack. But when I turn on/pause a song/play videos there is a faint hum/whine in the left side which goes away after 10secs approx and comes back whenever something with a media is played. This is the second unit of the headphone, I also have the same headphone in a different colour from Feb 2021 which also exhibits the issue but the hum is much quieter on the old one. So is that normal occurence in budget headphones?

So, I built my third PC like a month ago. I went with a big budget to create my dream build. My specs are down below. The issue is : the day I started to use my PC, I noticed weird buzzing sounds. As time passed, it became more and more annyoing. To explain, every little movement I do with my mouse creates sort of a buzzing sound coming from the motherboard area (I put my ear as close as possible to identify where the noises from, and it really comes from around the CPU). + whenever my CPU is under load, the same kind of noise happens, but at a higher volume. In addition to that, my GPU has a ton of coil whine, even undervolted. Im in a desperate need of help, since I dont know what to do. I spent a lot of time and a lot of money for this build to be my work/gaming station, and as it is right now it's very unpleasant to use... Thanks to anybody reading this. My specs : i5 10600k 2x8 Go DDR4 3200Mhz Corsair vengence LPX ASUS - INTEL Z490-I ROG STRIX GAMING - Mini-ITX Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 FE Corsair SF750 80+ Platinum 250 Go SSD WD Blue 2To SSD WD Blue My mouse is the Logitech G305

Hey guys I hope you'll be able to shine a light on my issue, So recently my pc started making a high pitch/static/interference noise that is pretty much constant (unlike coil whine I think which the sounds seems to "fluctuate" from example I tried to listen to online). It seems to have started after I had a BSOD while in game, which was pretty wierd since i'm on an almost brand new top of the line pc and wasn't playing a demanding game (deux ex human revolution, but I was playing via gamestream/moonlight from my pc to my living room tv). After multiple test with a mic and headphones I determined that the sound was coming from the GPU (still not 100% sure but pretty close to that) and only happens in certain games but not all. The most obvious one being hitman 3 with the noise starting as soon as the game starts and stopping when I alt tab the game. i also tried f1 2019 and the noise only happen when i'm in gameplay, in the menu, unlike hitman 3, it doesn't happen. Strangely it doesn't happen in gameplay in human revolution. Every benchmark I've tested so far doesn't make the noise happen, msi kombustor, 3dmark, occt, cinebench. It doesn't seems to happen in VR either with a Rift S (but I'll have to test some more games to be sure) here's a little video I made where you can hear the noise : My specs : i9 12900k z690 aorus pro 32gb ram ddr5 and a gigabyte RTX 3080 gaming oc that I bought last year, and I've actually been mining on it on the side when I'm not using the PC (I guess that could be the source of the problem, but the noise doesn't happen when mining, and i'm 95% sure the noise was not there when the card was in my old pc and neither could I hear it on this new pc until like 3 days ago.) not sure if this matter too but the screen I game on is a Aorus ad27q some info about my pc crash : CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT (101) An expected clock interrupt was not received on a secondary processor in an MP system within the allocated interval. This indicates that the specified processor is hung and not processing interrupts. Arguments: Arg1: 0000000000000008, Clock interrupt time out interval in nominal clock ticks. Arg2: 0000000000000000, 0. Arg3: ffffde8080879180, The PRCB address of the hung processor. Arg4: 0000000000000010, The index of the hung processor. So is it coil whine ? If it is, i guess there's nothing I can do, and it's not supposed to be dangerous right, just have to learn to live with it? And if it's not coil whine, what is it, early sign of my card failing? Thanks guys!

So 3 days ago i bought a new Motherboard , cpu and ssd Mb is h510M cpu is i5 11400 ssd is kingston sata 240GB. Today that noise started happening it sounds more like whistling and whining and i checked all the fans and they are as quiet as possible when im gaming and this noise actually goes away when i game but on idle or while installing something its there. Is that whining/whistling noise dangerous?? If so what do i do about it?? You guys will hear that its something similar to when your ears have ringing or smth. VID_20220302233000.mp4

Hi, My desktop started to make this noise noise.m4a today, which start when I open a game and instantly stop when the game closes. I'm not sure which component makes the noise, but my GPU is a gtx 1080 strix and my PSU is a Corsair TXM Gold 650 W 80+. These two components are about 4 years old and have never had an issue with them before. The rest of the PC is new components from January. I read that it might be coil whine? Should I be worried of my GPU or PSU dying on me soon?
-
Happy new year everyone! I have a problem with my PSU unit. It is EVGA Nex650g 80+ Gold rated. It makes barely audible electrical noises. Does it when idle and under load. Doesn't make it continuously, it is arythmic, comes and goes, i have a video, if you ignore fan noise, it will be audible. What may be the problem? Thanks in advance. VID-20210101-WA0000.mp4

My new 3070ti started making this noise today when running anything with nvenc or RTX (see video). I’m pretty sure it’s coil whine but it would be reassuring to get confirmation from people who have experienced it before. This sounds a bit deeper than the videos I’ve seen from similar cards with whine. If it is just whine I can push the PC away from my monitors and wear noise cancelling headphones when gaming if the supplier won’t RMA it. (It’s pretty loud in-person) That’s me loading up menus in Cyberpunk to stop/start the noise quickly. Thanks! IMG_0887.MOV

Hello guys, I would like to buy a gtx 1070 which one of them has the lowest chance of getting coil whine? I heard pretty bad stuff about MSI and Gigabyte models.
-
I really do want to get the nano, but i am worried about the possibility of coil whine. How likely is it to appear, and is it "fixable" or able to be tuned down?
-
Okay, so, I've gotton myself a nice upgrade, a Gigabyte Gaming 1 1060 6gb. Although there is one problem with it, whenever I load a game it coil whines. I know the obvious solution is 'just enable v sync' yea that doesn't work... I've contacted the store I've got it from and they've offered me an RMA. My question is that is there even any point in an RMA or will they just send me back another whin-y card?

Hi, a few days ago i endend my mini-itx build based on an i5 7600 + hyper 212 evo MSI b250 Wifi Corsair CX550M MSI 480Gtx I built this pc to be dead silent "at least when not gaming" and i'm kinda satisfied about that, despite a low constant and annoying noise. I'm not sure where it's coming from, seems the motheboard under the gpu, or the gpu itself "but i removed the supply from the gpu w/out difference and i don't think that the pci lane can provied enought fuel to make that noise". This is not coil whine, it's not a high pitched noise, it's low, like an old buzzing lamp "Like this but much more quiter and slower https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6s468L88Y2Y Is there something i can do ? This build could be dead silent except for this noise that's driving me crazy :C

I have some fairly old speakers(2) from Logitech. They are powered by a single USB and 3.5 headphone jack cable from my motherboard. Every time I launch a demanding application such as Watch_Dogs 2 or even Minecraft, the speakers begin to make a high-frequency noise. The noise disappears when I close the application. The pitch and loudness changes when I move my mouse. While the computer is idling or being used for nothing demanding, the speakers have an audible hum/squeal. Any suggestions as to why this might happen would be much appreciated. Please note, this didn't happen when I used these speakers with a laptop

Hello, this is my first time posting here, so I'm sorry if this is the wrong section. So I build my own gaming PC and I've been using it for some months now, but recently I noticed a weird static noise coming from my PSU, I'm certain it's the PSU because I ruled out the video card and the CPU fan.the noise starts whenever I play a demanding game or I have to much stuff going on my computer.a little fix that I found is to set my power options to "balanced" instead of "high performance", but using balanced lowers the performance on almost every game.I'm using an EVGA 500W.here you can hear clearly the sound I'm talking about when I'm in the high-performance option: https://clyp.it/k1uuem1land just for reference this is when I'm using the balanced one: https://clyp.it/kcidmrdi I'll leave the sounds attached to the topic in case any of the links expiresMy biggest concern right now is to confirm this is indeed coil whine and not something more dangerous to my computer, I'm still changing the PSU when I get paid, but that's still a whole month away, I just want to know If I can relax until then and still play video games like usual or should I be careful until I get a new PSU.Thanks in advance for any help, sorry again if this is the wrong place. sound .mp3 nothing.mp3

So, I've recently set up an ITX office pc with the following specs; ASRock H81M ITX Intel Core i5-4590T (2ghz base 3ghz turbo, 35w) 8GB (2x4GB) 1600MHz C11 1.35v DDR3L RAM 240GB Intel 530 series SSD 120w picoPSU My issue is at idle there is super loud awful coil whine coming from the motherboard VRMs, its the only thing making noise and since theres nothing else producing sound in the room its incredibly annoying. Disabling C-States somewhat fixes it, but increases temperatures a bit and as such increases idle power consumption from 2w to 6w, as the system is designed for low power consumption 6w isnt bad but id much rather have it idle fully. The system doesnt make any noise when the display is off after idling for 10 minutes, but power consumption again rises to about 10w (not sure why), so i leave it outputting all the time and turn off the momitor when notin use which leaves it at 2w on the cpu, overall power consumption in the region of about 15-20w. I cant rma the mobo or cpu as theyre long since out of warranty, unless ASRock is willing to hit me up with a kabylake cpu mobo and ram combo, which is doubtful lol.. Any suggestions?

Hello, I get this constant static sound through my headphones. It gets worse when i play games or even do a internet speed test. The sound just randomly appeared one day and i cannot recall doing anything to the computer that might have had caused it. Things i have tried to do to get rid of it that didn't work: -Tried different headphones (I plug my headphones to the back of the computer) -Updated sound drivers -Unplugged usb devices one by one -Plugged PC power cable into a different power outlets. -Bought an USB Dac. The sound got even worse. My pc specs: OS: Windows 7 64bit MOBO: AsRock Z77 Extreme6, LGA1155, Intel Z77, DDR3, ATX PSU: Seasonic 660W P-660 (XP²) modular ATX-power supply, 80 Plus Platinum, semi-passive. GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 CPU: Intel Core i7 3770K No overclocking. My PC parts are about 3-4 years old. Any suggestions on what i could do to stop the static sound?

When I play Overwatch at anything over 30fps, there is an awful, constant, slightly high pitched static feedback through my headphones that doesn't seem to happen with any other games. The static is also audible to other people I'm playing with, using the Blizzard App for chat. Anyone else had this problem? Would love to play it at a higher fps but the noise is really annoying. At first I thought that maybe it was like a coil whine from my graphic card ( EVGA Geforce 1070 FTW) but my friend who knows a bit more about computers said this is most likely not the issue even with my ex overclocking it to 31%. Any advice helpful

As the title says this is my GTX1070 G1 Gigabyte 8GB That is Making this Noise under load does Anyone Know If it's a Fan. Watch the video I recorded and you will hear it during a windows Index Rating Test. If it just a fan issue because all my games run fine the temps are normal and everything ells is ok. I just got my new Zotac GTX 1070 AMP card a few days ago and I was really excited since I was upgrading from a MSI GTX 960 4gb. But I immediately noticed that my card has coil whine during heavy loads and high FPS, which was very disappointing .I did some more testing and I noticed that the coil whine is loudest in benchmarks like Kombustor or OCCT, but it not nearly as loud during gaming, its still there but I have to put my ear on the open top of the case or mute my volume completely. And luckily its not at all there when idle. I also noticed the coil whine decreases when temps are higher, maybe its just a sensation because the fans kick in at those temps and they could be covering up the noise a little, I'm not sure. I was able to remove coil whine completely in games by using v-sync. No whine in 1080p vsync on, barely audible in 2k and slightly more on 4k but with normal volume I can ignore it except during the more quieter scenes. Some say, that a 12 hr or 24 hr GPU burn-in can make it go away completely. I tried Kombustor for 2-3 hrs, temps were getting too high (max 85) and I might have also got a slight burnt smell, so I just stopped that right away at that point. Maybe I'll do a more realistic load like Heaven or Valley for longer. I did this with my overclock so I guess thats why I got the really high temps, and I think this card's cooler isn't as good as MSI's Twin Frozr for example.. Others have said the PSU can cause the GPU to whine or vice versa. I'm using a Corsair VS 650. And when I bought it, I thought it being Corsair and all meant high quality so if anyone has any advice on that please let me know. I never had coil whine before this card as this is my first PC build and this card is the first upgrade I have done. Also doing some research I read the +12v value on the PSU is important. I'm getting a min of 11.4 during gaming or benchmarks, which is the lowest it can go before being considered a bad PSU, could this be the cause of my coil whine? I use HWinfo64 for monitoring everything. Seeing some videos of other people affected by coil whine on Youtube, I guess I still got lucky. I also contacted my shop to see if I could RMA it, they will take it but they say they need to verify if the card has any problem. And I'm thinking I'll probably get back the same card as the coil whine is not severe enough. So, I'd prefer solving the problem somehow or atleast reduce it as much as possible.
