Hello Everyone! I am looking to buy a new internal hard drive to store my music, game, movie library and I found a really good deal on an Ultrastar hard drive. The thing is that these drives are marketed as data center drives which confused me since they have similar specs to the gold and red series. Price-wise, the Ultrastar is the cheapest, then it's the gold one which costs 25€ more and then the red which costs 50€ more (compared to the ultrastar). The Ultrastar and the gold one also have 512mb cache as opposed to the red one which has 256mb which is strange because the red is the most expensive one on the list... Does anyone know the difference between the Ultrastars, gold and red drives and which ones are the best reliability-wise and for my use-case? Thank you in advance

Hello, I am wondering what would be the best SSD for game storage, I already have a 1TB m.2 SN550 as a boot drive and storage for now and will be buying the samsung gen4 pcie SSD as the new boot drive whenever that is out which will take up all the m.2 slots on my x570 tomahawk. So in the meantime I am wondering what is the fastest 2TB or bigger SSD that is reasonable for a game drive? Any suggestions would be great. Thanks EDIT: I was thinking about the MX500 or the WD Blue

I'm looking to get a new hard drive but I'm not sure what the difference is between the labels with the different colors. Any information would be very helpful.

Western Digital to release 20TB HDD This is pretty cool, but however since Bennett himself said that they don't know when it will be released, so this is a far far future. Sauce: https://mybroadband.co.za/news/hardware/306138-western-digital-to-release-20tb-hdd.html

I wanted to share my experience of the warranty process through Western Digital. Since I started building PC's many years ago, I chose WD for their internal hard disk drives. I now have had two failed 1TB Black hard drives due to bad sectors, both purchased 3 years apart if you were thinking its a batch issue. When the first one failed I didn't even think to check the warranty which was definitely still valid. When the second one failed about a month ago I went on the website, registered my product, and realized I have 3 years left. The first step, I tried was testing it with their proprietary software Life Guard Diagnostic. I did both quick and extended and it showed "failed due to bad sectors". It asked if I wanted to try and repair I chose yes, but unfortunately it did not work. So I started a support ticket. I asked if there was anything else I could do to fix the drive and also why it kept happening to me. They never answered instead they asked for my serial number then told me to follow this link to RMA the drive. The link was broken and stated "no results found". Then they sent a proper link. Next I was trying to add my shipping address to my profile for the replacement hard drive. The support portion of their website is https://westerndigital.secure.force.com/ which is run from India. It would not allow my address to be entered. It would tell me my address in invalid. I live in South Florida. I could not continue the RMA process. I googled the issue and come to find the same problem has been around since January 2016. Many people not able to enter their address and continue the RMA process. So, back to the e-mail and asked them to enter it for me which they obliged. At this point I started to feel they would do whatever they could to not fill the warranty. After getting that squared away the RMA instructions were incredibly long. I had to print it and it was 3 pages worth. The shipping instructions were very particular stating two inch packing material, exact type of packing material to be used. Serial number written on 3 sides of the box in BOLD letters. RMA barcode to be taped to the top side. Which they gave you two labels to choose from (I still never understood which one was right). All the while the instructions telling me if anything was not right they would invalidate the RMA and nothing would be returned. Alas I received my new hard drive and they received my broken one. The one (very) positive outcome is they sent a 2TB back, although i'm not so sure its a Black, it doesn't say anywhere on the label, but it made the situation a lot better. After receiving the new hard drive I wanted to be proactive and register the hard drive right away. That's when I find out the new hard drive has 100 days left on the warranty. I felt it should at least be the 3 years left I had on the last one seeing that I sort of purchased a 5 year warranty with the drive. Back to the e-mail and it was fixed. Now I have to say this is the first warranty I have ever done, so maybe they are all like this, but it just seemed to me they were making the process so difficult to where I would not return the hard drive. I have been using Western Digital products for a very long time and its just a bummer their customer support was well, what it was. Sorry if it sounds like I am crying about it, but I waited a week to write this so I wasn't irritated anymore.

What's the different of WD Black and WD Blue? I'm planning to WD Black but it's the same price for double the storage of WD Blue. To make things clear 1TB Black for 80$ (direct conversion from my currency) and 2TB Blue for 80$. So the rpm is the same (7200rpm). Only the warranty is 3 years more. Someone made a video about it showing that blue is actually faster than black. So why am I going to buy WD Black if im getting less speed? My objective here is to store my videos and games in it. Mainly my videos.I already have one ssd for the os and 1TB black for gaming purposes. So the Blue seems to be the winner here. But I can't decide. Googling only mix things up even more. Why don't linus do these tests =P

Brand New WD Caviar Black 2TB Strange Noise While Shutting Down
Guest posted a topic in Storage Devices
Well just like the title says I just bought a brand new Western Digital Caviar Black 2TB and plugged it in formatted it with absolutely no problem. Didn't even write anything to it. And I turned the system off. While shutting down the hard drive makes a strange grinding noise that I've never heard from a drive before. Here is a YouTube video with that sound: the sound starts at 6 seconds and you might need to turn the volume up to hear it. What the hell is that sound? Is that the motor just slowing down and stopping? Is that head scratching the platters? What is that sound? I've heard that the black series can be loud and make noises from time to time but that sound doesn't sound normal. I've checked in Crystal Disk Info and it says the drive is fine. I don't believe it. -
In my local area WD gets bad press and thats why I avoid them. Most people talk about reliability issues with them, issue is my local computer store is now mostly selling WD drives and other manufactures have all but disappeared from there store. I am just wondering what peoples experiences are with these drives in terms of reliability.

So I recently got a WD My Book and My Book Duo and downloaded the three WD programs that came with it. Using their WD security I set a password for both of them. I then proceeded to reroute the location of my "Videos" file in my library (previously located in my D:\Users\Charles\Videos) to My Book Duo (now located in E:\) so that any videos I have and will have in the future will directly go to that external hard drive. However, it seems that whenever I try to go to my videos in my library, there is a "WD Drive Unlock" preventing me from accessing my videos and when I click on it, it says that it is already unlocked. The only way I can access my videos is through "This PC" -> "My Book Duo (G:)". So is there a way to get rid of this "WD Drive Unlock" that is preventing me direct access to it from my library? I have already tried removing my password and currently have "auto unlock for this computer" enabled and neither of them worked. I have a screenshot below to show what it looks like. While we're on this topic, whenever my computer boots up and I log into my user account, both files from My Book and My Book Duo pops up, is there any way to get rid of that? Any help would be appreciated!

Building a new gaming PC in the Silverstone Raven RVZ01. Stock fan(s) - Silverstone 120mm Slim @ 18dB Additional Fan - Nanoxia Deep Silence 120mm PWM @ 16.9 dB CPU Cooler - Cooling the Intel Core i5 4690S, Noctua LH-L9i @ 14.8 dB (with L.N.A) GPU - Asus GTX 750 Ti Strix OC @ 0dB HDD - Western Digital Green 4TB @ 28dB PSU - Silverstone ST45SF-G @ 18dB Of course, the system is only as quiet as the most noisy component in the PC. Therefore, my PC should be 28dB at max load. Is this silent or close to it? Can anyone with a PC around 30 dB explain how loud this would sound about 40cm away from me on my desk? Thanks ^.^

I'm more of a Seagate fan but when it comes to larger sizes like 3TB and 4TB if I went with Seagate I would use a Constellation ES but other that the 128MB of cache (with certain models) I am not very comftreble with it and I know of WD Blacks being more common in these situations and since there are not 4tb barracudas (that I'm aware of) or 7200rpm hybrids in 4tb (on pcpartpicker) I then would go with the constellation but like I said is they are not very common so I'm not to sure if that is marketing or just not being good, also sorry this is long. Plz help, MRE

Which is better, the Seagate hybrid drives or the WD black the black is more expensive but I belive it performs better so which is better.

I have a 3tb external drive (Mybook from WD) and inside its a green drive I'm sure. I have it shared on homegroup from my desktop but every ten minutes if its not accessed it will sleep, and disconnect itself from homegroup. (So if I want to watch a movie of the drive on my laptop, I have to go to my desktop and "wake up" the drive before my laptop can access it. The sleep mode can't be fixed with any WD software or power options in Windows through device manager so I'm using a program called NoSleepHD or KeepAliveHD, which basically writes an empty file every ten minutes to keep the drive from going into power save mode. Will a program that keeps the HD running 24/7 reduce the longevity of my drive? I keep backups on it..

Hey guys, so apperantly my 2 y/o external hard drive is dying. It's this WD 1 TB 2.5" drive. I use it to back up my data and store the full system backups, that i created using Acronis . I first noticed something was wrong by the transferspeeds of ~5 MB/s through USB 3.0. It also takes abnormally long for the PC to detect the drive and actions like right click on some data or copy paste take longer than normal. So i tried to backup my HDD to my internal drive and reformat it. But while backing up it failes on (only) 2 datas everytime. Unfortunatley those 2 datas are the only backups that exist of my PC, very shortly after I've installed windows etc. on it. - So later when i wanted to reinstall i could just use those backups instead of reinstalling everything. -. The error message is: [german]"die quelldatei oder vom quelldatenträger kann nicht gelesen werden" which freely translated means "the source data or from the source drive can't be read" So i did some testing with HD Tune which, despite my observations, says that everything should be fine, see files attached. I also tried chkdsk /f /r, which took for eeeeever (not 24h for ever but 24 years for ever) so i aborted that. So do you know a proper repair program for such cases. Also how do i get those two backups off there without damaging them and without spending a fortune on some hard drive recovery specialists. -Meow

I have recently set up a home server which I am using for central storage, backup and ftp as well as domain controller, DHCP and DNS. I currently have a WD 3TB Red drive for main important storage that backs up some of the files to an external 1.5TB USB3 WD drive. 2 WD 500GB black drives (setup as virtual 1TB drive) 2.5 WD 1TB blue and a WD 640GB green. Regardless of the current drives i'm looking at setting up a RAID with a dedicated card. Basically i would just like recommendations for RAID cards around £70-80 and HDD's for 3TB+ on RAID 5. (eg four 1TB drives or three 2TB drives) Server hardware; Asus Gryphon z87, Intel CT Gigabit NIC, Intel G3430, 8GB Vengeance RAM (taken from my gaming rig :L) Samsung 256GB 840 EVO + all them other drives i listed earlier What about this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ADAPTEC-ASR-3805-128MB-8-PORT-SAS-RAID-CONTROLLER-CARD-PCI-E-HBA-/291005765884?pt=UK_Computing_ComputerComponents_InterfaceCards&hash=item43c14b98fc

Hi! My system will only contain 2x WD Black 1002 FAEX 1TB 64MB HDDs. I wonder which raid I should set them in, 1 for securing my files or 0 for double the speed(?) and having 2 TB of storage on the "same" drive. Yes I know "you should have an SSD for boot drive and storage for apps etc" but my case doesnt really support that. Sure it got a drive bay or whatever able to contain 6 2.5" drives, but I removed it to make the wiring a ton times easier (curse the cube cases). But seriously, which RAID should I use? Thanks beforehand.

Hey guys, i think about getting a NAS for christmas, since my external HDD died on me quite some time ago. I need it for -my backups (300 GB laptop, 60 GB PC SSD, 400 GB PC HDD) + backing up other stuff + other media files. -university stuff (generally just a personal cloud would be useful) I also want to be abled to access it from all around the world, to e.g. make backups at home and upload them to my NAS that stands in my other home where i study. A good mobile app for accessing, managing and if possible sending data is also important to me. budget is around 250 €. I will run RAID 1 and want at least 2 TB of storage. cheers

Hi, so I just recently ordered myself a new external HDD from western digital, one of those passport ones (small handy dandy ones). I put another backup of my files on the new one, and it blew me away how fast that one was compared to my old one. They're both USB3, however the first one is a 1TB model from 2011, and my last one is a 2TB from this year. Why is the performance so different? The new one reached speeds of over 110 MB/s where the old one barly manages to hit 65 MB/s.

Hello I am having issues with my Western Digital 4TB Black Hard Drive that I recently bought from Ebuyer, it sometimes only detects it in IDE mode while my boot hard drive is in AHCI mode, and when it does it does not show its capacity (unformatted?). Image of the Drive Installed: http://imgur.com/a/ePIcl When it is connected it makes a weird noise, not the "Death" noise but a sort of light beep. It says on the HDD to not cover any of the drive holes, but the drive holes are technically covered with the silver stickers, I am not sure if that is the issue. In POST it takes a while to finish with the drive connect and I have experienced several errors: Primary Slave Drive Failure AHCI 0 Device Failure (And not really an error but) It detected it as a Tape Drive. So is it a dud? Because I am really (without swearing) annoyed as my boot drive messed up with the patronising ":(xDDDDD screen of annoyance" (I want to punch whoever made that BSOD screen) requiring me to Refresh my System (which basically means "Oh hay guiz let uz jst remove ALL of your applications instead of just scaning and repairing the corrupted file!") meaning that I have to reinstall all of my applications. The reason: Because I had the audacity to press the restart button on my chassis while at the desktop.

I love gaming and need more space for all my games (i like to have them all installed at once) as my 120GB SSD is now full. I would like to put all my games on this spare drive, so which would be better (and also for storage, but primarily games). I have heard the black is faster, but also heard complaints about noise. Is this a big issue? (I have a soundproof case) Or is it worth the extra performance. If you have one of these drives please let me know how you are finding it. Thanks!
