Hi all, I am looking to build a new NAS / Plex Server. I talked about it in the past before but I never ended up making anything due to budget constraints, but now I have the money to spend on one. I am a noob when it comes to the UNRaid / TrueNAS so I am not sure which I should pick. I want the NAS portion for picture storing and some game file storing, like save on one computer to the NAS and then pick back up on another computer. Like maybe install my Steam library to the NAS. For the PLEX portion there will be times where 3 people are streaming at the same time at 4K resolution (Apple TVs). I am looking for some advice on what specs I should be looking for... I would prefer to buy some used hardware to save some money if possible. I already have 6 WD RED Plus 4TB HDDs for this NAS. What RAID settings should I use? 1 redundant or 2 redundant drives? Why pick UNRaid over TrueNAS or vice versa? Does PLEX benefit from a GPU? Would an RTX 2060 be fine for this? Thanks for any help

I am wondering how problematic running a server with RAID 5 with different drive manufacturers is. I would theoretically have the odd drive as the spare. I plan on running these drives in an ATX Case with a Ryzen 7 2700 CPU. Unraid with file backups, plex, lancache. Server would have: 3x 6TB Toshiba N300 CMR 7200RPM (supports up to 8 bays) 1x 6TB WD Red Plus CMR 5400RPM (supports up to 8 bays) Are there any problems with this?

So for the past 3yrs I've been using the WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra w/ 2x2TB WD Red drives in RAID 0. The NAS is primarily used as a Plex server for 800 movies, TV Shows and backing up of my PC but is now completely full (14GB remaining). I am considering purchasing the Synology DS918+, mostly for hardware transcoding of 4K movies and the ability to expand its storage capacity for years to come. If I get the DS918+ and install 1x4TB WD Red - is it possible for me to transfer all 4TB data from the My Cloud NAS to the Synology and then move over the old 2x2TB drives into the Synology, completely phasing out the WD NAS? What would be the best way of achieving this as efficiently as possible, and what RAID options should I consider now I'd effectively have 8TB total and 4TB free storage? I only chose RAID 0 originally for the performance and ability to use the entire 4TB available. All help and opinions on this is greatly appreciated! FYI - I have considered alternative NAS options including building my own but the DS918+ seems the most logical with its 4 bays, expansion capabilities, quad-core CPU and ease/simplicity compared to relying on FreeNAS or something similar... for me it makes the most sense to buy rather than build.

https://blocksandfiles.com/2020/04/14/wd-red-nas-drives-shingled-magnetic-recording/ Western digital admitted some of its Western digital Red drives use shingle magnetic recording which has lead to issues with raid arrays Wd still insists that this isn't an issue and there's enough idle time for drive management and garbage collection

I'm running 2 x 3TB WD Reds in my NAS non raid so i have the full 6GB of space. I have recently done some spring cleaning and sorted out and deleted 1.09TB of data. What im wondering is it safe to defrag a NAS and if so whats the best tools to use? Thanks

Hi there! I am planning to build a NAS in my home and the unit I like and will probably end up buying is the Synology D716 II+. Thing is, I haven't decided which drive to use. Since I have two bays, I will start with a 4TB drive and will add a second one in the future. Possible candidates: 1) WD Red 4TB 2) WD Red Pro 4TB 3) WD Gold 4TB 4) HGST NAS 4TB Does anyone have experience with this drives? Longevity and a quiet operation are my top priorities, (speed being the last) I've read a lot, but I am still unsure about having a better drive if I spend more on the Gold series for example, (then I heard they are noisier as well, is this true?) All of them are within my budged. Which one would you recommend for this NAS and why? Thanks!

I have a DS1515 curently has 3 WD red 6TB, running in a single volume configured as a Synology Hybrid RAID (with data protection of 1 disk fault tolerence). I am looking to upgrade the volume so I was looking at some 10 TB drives so my questions are : 1. According to Synology's website I have 9 compatible drives to choose from, the 2 that stand out for me are the seagate ST10000VN0004 - 1ZD101 and the WD GOLD WD101KRYZ - 01JPDB0, which one would be a better fit for my setup? 2. what would my RAID capacity be after adding this drive? Thanks!

My first post on LTT Forums, so hi everyone! So my build starts here, got my first batch of WD RED 8TB going into my 45drives enclosure. This will supplement my other two NAS builds which are getting a bit old, Server 1 is roughly 120TB and Server 2 is about 40TB, the are both based on the Lian-Li PC-V2100 PLUS II in black, really nice cases for a NAS in my opinion. Hopefully this new build will reach just over 200TB of usable space.

So I'm slowly gathering parts for a NAS build using an older i3 based mATX system. Just bought a new quieter cooler and case fan, got half the RAM I need at a good price and now I have to start thinking about the drives. I thought that would be the easy part, get some WD Red drives and be done. but then I came across these 4 bay 2.5" hot-swap 5.25" adapters. That would be a great thing to have for a home NAS, easy access for changing/upgrading drives and activity lights for each drive. So now I have 2 questions: 1 Has anyone here used 2.5" WD Red drives that could give some insight into their performance or thermals vs. 3.5" models? and 2. Has anyone heard anything about WD releasing larger capacity 2.5" Red drives? As much as I'd like the performance of a larger disk array the cost of the eight 1TB 2.5" I need is double the same capacity of 3.5" drives not to mention the cost of the two cages I'd need. I know I can get 5.25" to 3X3.5" cages, but then I'd need to get a new case that has 4X5.25 bays too. Basically just some general advice or thoughts on using 2.5" vs 3.5" NAS drives.

Hi everyone I was wondering what happens when multiple users on the same network access a file from the same HDD at the same time. Does it effect performance when users stream data from that particular HDD and damages the HDD in the long run?

Hello everyone, So I have 2 WD Reds 4TB in Raid 1 in my system with my data on them. Everything was running fine. Yesterday I was trying to get to someones data on a HDD, so I booted up Linux on a bootable USB, but I left everything else in my system. Now that I'm booting back into windows, my raid array does not show up in Windows, but the intel RST program says my array is fine. In the splashscreen while booting everything seems fine as well. The RST program is "initializing" the drives but it takes like forever and I don't know what that means. Any ideas on how I can get my array to show up again? It looks really weird in disk management, but since I'm using raid through the intel thing I probably shouldn't use disk management fiddle with the disks/array... Thanks, Stef

Hi all, I have 2 main questions regarding the storage solutions for my new PC build. What I have right now: 1 x OZS M.2 SSD - NVMe (256GB) - wasn't planning on buying this initially but picked up one cheap on amazon. 1 x Crucial MX-100 SSD - Sata (512GB) - this I have already for my current PC, and intend to keep for the new one. What I still need to get: 1 x WD HDD 2TB Since the HDD would be pretty much only for storage purposes, and viewing media files etc, would anybody here recommend getting a WD Red drive? Advantages seem to be running cooler, vibration dampening, ability to run in a Raid system (not sure I will do that anyway though) and quiet operation. Disadvantage would seem to be the TLER function - but how much of a disadvantage is this really for everyday operation? WD Black seems a bit overkill since all my programs, games and OS should run off the 2 SSD's WD Blue would be the other option, but if blue, would you then recommend 2 x 1TB 7200rpm drives, or 1 x 2TB 5400rpm drive? Reading up the 5400rpm ones are the old WD Green standard I believe. So if its pretty much a WD Green, why not go for the Red instead. Regarding the SSD's; Would it be better to use the NVMe SSD (256gb) for games installs, and larger programs, and run the OS off the Sata (512gb) SSD? Or run the OS from the NVMe device, along with a couple of the more intensive games? How much does it really make a difference if you would run the OS from a Sata or NVMe drive in the end?

Afternoon all, Got a nice DL150 g6 last week to use as my main VM server, im having a few issues running multiple VM's from a 3tb WD red drive. Has anyone else had any other issues with these drives in this use case. I think i will probable have to get a 7200rpm drive for this but on the off change anyone has any other recommendations it would be much appreciated. I have been thinking of using a 3tb Toshiba but i have read that they arent to reliable. please bare in mind that i am not made of money and cannot effort to get a enterprise grade drive. cheers all

Hi All, I'm looking to purchase some hard drives for a 4-bay OWC Thunderbay 4 (Thunderbolt 3), I imagine 4x 2TB would be sufficient, creating an 8TB working array in RAID 0. The footage would be backup up to another storage array to protect against any potential drive failures. What functional benefits would I see from using 7200rpm (WD Red Pro/IronWolf Pro) vs. 5400/5900rpm drives (WD Red/IronWolf)? The advertised data rates don't seem to be that much of an improvement so I'm curious to know if the seek times would affect the responsiveness of the timeline, etc. In addition, I can pick up 2TB IronWolf drives for £59.99 each, whereas IronWolf Pro drives are £94.99 each. Thanks for any help you can provide!

So I want to expand my computer building ability and thought I'd try to build a NAS.... Now that I got the hardware working, I installed FreeNAS and am ready to set up my disks. I currently plan 6 - 3TB WD REDS in ZFS. That will give me 15TB of storage for my PLEX server. Does this mean I am stuck using 6 drives forever in that pool, unless of course I want to reformat the whole NAS? Or can I add HDD's to the pool and FreeNAS will redistribute the Data? I realize I can increase storage capacity of the drives individually (letting it rebuild after each replaced drive), but it seems like it would just be easier to fill the NAS with drives.

Hello all, new to the forums and am have an issue with my FreeNAS server build. I currently have an AsRock Rack EP2C602 motherboard that I am installing FreeNAS on (flash media). I'm using two E5-2660 Xenon processors and 32GB ECC RAM. I was able to install FreeNAS on the USB Flash but the motherboard BIOS is not detecting my Western Digital 3TB Red (NAS) SATA drives. I checked the PS SATA power and it was good. I swapped around the SATA ports. It has 14 ports (6 SATA III, 8 SATA II). The MB post looks fine. There are no error codes. I disconnected all but one drive. Still no luck in BIOS. I have updated the AsRock BIOS as well. I also swapped one of the drives to my Windows computer but the BIOS there didn't even detect it. At this point I was thinking "aw crap, I have a bad drive" but I took one of the other NAS Drives and put it in my Windows computer and STILL NO BIOS detection! I am new to using NAS drives. Is there something different about them that I don't know? I have 8 - 3TB drives and they can't all be bad...? Does anyone know whats going on here??

Has anyone used a 8TB Toshiba N300 in a NAS before and if so what is it like (particularly for noise)? I currently have an Unraid server (used as a Home NAS for Plex media streaming, running VMs, file sharing and to hold PC backups) running 1 6TB WD Red and 3 4TB WD Red drives (all hanging inside a Fractal Design Node 804 case) but I'm starting to run low on disk space so I am looking to upgrade. I was looking at replacing a 4TB WD Red with a 6TB version for about £165 but saw that the Toshiba 8TB drive for under £200 (which is within my budget). My NAS is in my living room so noise is my biggest concern but I can't find much info online regarding noise for the Toshiba drive. I went for WD Red's over Seagate Ironwolfs mainly because the WD Reds sounded ever so slightly better in my setup. Spec wise the Toshiba N300 seems better as it has 2TB more disk space, a larger cache and a farter RPM but if it's any noisier than the WD Reds it's probably not what I am looking for.

A little background: I have 2x 6TB WD Red drives, 1x Samsung 860 EVO (2.5") and a Corsair RM750x (2018). So I was having some issues booting my system. Whenever it powered on, it would immediately shutdown. However, it would only shutdown whenever all SATA-cables (data & power) were plugged in. After some more troubleshooting, I figured out the problem: I had plugged a SATA-cable from another PSU into my PSU. Needless to say, the cable had a way different pinout, than what fits my PSU (look to crude MS Paint diagram). The only hardware that has suffered damages, seems to be the storage drives. So what I'd wanna know is: Are they perhaps still fixable? - Is it a small matter of replacing a fuse, or are they basically just paperweights now Thank you in advance

hi, i would like to turn my gaming pc (which i dont game at all) to a NAS/home/plex media server, whatever you call it. Its a i3-8100 / 960 evo m.2 nvme ssd / gtx 1060. I would like to add a HDD to store media files where i will access from Plex Media Clients , access files over/outside network and so on. I can add 6 sata3 drives so i start with one 4 TB drive and add more and turn it into a RAID configuration. I am looking for these; Seagate Barracuda WD Red Seagate Ironwolf I know everyone, for a server use, recommends NAS drives like RED and Ironwolf however i will always keep a backup of the media. Is there a big difference between Barracuda and NAS drives? i am considering Barracuda bcs of its price and low noise. tia

For now im using WD Blue 6TB hard drives two of them for file storage, but i was looking for bigger drives from WD and all Blue's or Black are limited to 6TB, while Red drives are available to 8TB and WD Gold drives 10-12TB is it going to be a problem if i use one of those Red or Gold drives in a desktop computer, or External USB 3 Enclosure? my tipical usage is file storing, and sometimes reading from hard drives, but mostly its storing files (not to be confused with archiving when you load hdd with files and then disconnect it from power, while storing it on the shelf)

So I have been thinking about rebuilding my Home server/NAS system. Currently it is an AMD A10-5800K with 20GB of RAM, and 10TB of Storage in windows Storage Space. I was thinking about going FreeNAS and upgrading to a new Ryzen 3 or 5 with Vega. I am looking for recommendations for a build. This is my idea of the rebuild but any ideas would be great. I plan on getting a RAID card or HBA card of some sort so please recommend something that would work with Windows, FreeBSD, and CentOS.

We have a Lenovo x3500 M5 server here in our office and would like to add a WD Red HDD. Is there a compatibility issue? Is it okay to install it? Our vendor says it would void our warranty because the hard drive is a third party hard disk.

I have a spare 7700k with 32GB non ecc ram about 8 WD Reds Network is Cat 5 gigabit Ethernet. Would like to create a windows server or gaming / plex backup data and want to drag and drop files to my server as well for a backup maybe someone could tell me what else i could do with this server as well. I can get windows 2017 server if need be but not sure if that is any b etter than just using windows 10. There is no multiple users or need a mail server. My main computer has a 8 bay media sonic which i will use for my movie plex drive off my main computer, so when i run plex my main PC will be on , i will also be doing most of my gaming on this computer as well From my research NAS is great for a backup drive and cloud networking. I could care less about the cloud right now . If really wanting a file i think i can transfer files through remote desktop anyway. I want to use raid and need recommendations for which card would benefit me and a card to take advantage of a WD Red drive running at 5400rpm Forgot to mention i see alot of older raid cards on ebay very cheap like LSI megaraid etc which i heard is the best , which card would give me the most bandwidth at raid 6. Using Raid 10 for me right now is not beneficial due to limited space. I need at least 40TB of raid storage. I also will be using SSDs for my boot drive and would prefer Raid 6 on my raid card using SAS 8 port. I am not concerned about automatic backups if this matters So should i get a synology or qnap type raid or make a windows server? Thanks!

Ok so I posted this on the Unraid forum but figured I would see what your guys thoughts are as well. Ok so here is a short back story. I just setup my first unraid server. During preclear the WD 8tb Red drive that I had planed on using as my parity drive failed 10 mins in on the first pass. I'm going to RMA it but I've heard you normally get a used older drive back. Not what I want as my parity drive. I was rethinking my needs and since I figure my array will only have 4 tb drives in it I was thinking of buying a new 4tb to use as a parity (I will use my rma drive for something else.)So here is my question right now WD gold 4tb drives are pretty much the same price as 4tb red pro and really only a few dollars more then a normally red. The stats on the Gold just seem better then the red (Non Pro). (longer warranty, faster speed, MTBF is double for the Gold compared to the Red.) Since they are pretty much the same cost is there any reason I should not use Gold drives in my Unraid??

Hey everyone, I am planning out my first storage server build for a small business. I want to rack mount because I am expecting to install up to 4 servers in the rack in the next few months. I have been planning out this first build and wanted to see what I am overlooking or not correctly selecting. I have built computers in the past, but not a server. The site will be built from scratch) Thanks, Matt Possibly may be in wrong forum, I apologize
