  1. So I read an old forum post about running .exe files on Linux is way faster (and cut rendering speeds by half) , and I also read another forum post about how using VMs are really heavy for your system, so I wanted to try out Cinema 4D for Ubuntu 20. Any Tech Savvies in here who knows any exe launchers or light VMs for my old busted laptop?
  2. I am looking for a mSATA SSD with DRAM, something with a strong QD32 performance. Since I am planning to run VMs on the mSata SSD, I assume I need QD32 and not just QD1 only. Any suggestions? I am willing to go brandless names but with those SSDs, I don't know if they have any DRAM onboard.
  3. PINEFX

    VM PROBLEM

So i have a vm in azure and i was wondering how i can use my microphone on it because idk what to do thanks:)
  4. So I'm planning to buy a 3900X along with UNRAID but I'm not sure if I'll have enough PCI Lanes. (If so please give me recommendations for another CPU if so) GTX 1080 for one Gaming VM RTX 2060/70 for the other VM NVIDIA P2000 (or higher) for Plex Transcoding 5 x 8TB SATA Storage (maybe 4 drives instead idk yet) 1TB NVME M.2 2 USB Controllers or if the Motherboard has enough USB IOMMU Groups I think that's about it The 3900x has 24 lanes, 4 for the chipset though, so 20 usable (This is Gen 4 PCI btw, so i might be able to get away with things in 8x instead, and idk how much the P2000 needs for Plex Transcoding) I can make compromises too
  5. I'm having issues trying to get emulation running on Android Studio and I was hoping someone has an idea on how to get it working? I recently rebuilt my PC going from I7-6850k to AMD 3900X with new Mobo and faster RAM. Prior to the rebuild I had it working with no problem, so I don't know if it's a compatibility issue with the Intel Software on AMD, but from what I've researched I can see other people are able to use it, so I must be missing a step somewhere? The error I get on trying to install is: If I try to run the installer directly I get a similar error message: I can confirm that Virtualisation is working as I use VirtualBox a lot. Confirmed in Task Manager: I've confirmed that HyperVisor is unavailable in Windows Features and HyperVisor Plaftorm is enabled (apparently it needs that to run the emulation) I also confirmed that Windows Defender Core Isolation is disabled (as it uses Hyper-V to perform it's task) But I'm stuck. I can't see what else I need to enable to get it working and without the emulation running I can't check what I'm doing *sad beeps*
  6. Probably shouldn't have listed this under graphics cards topic.... I posted this in r/VFIO without much luck, hopefully someone here can help: I'm very new to KVM stuff but I already did a fair lot of research and I need some help. While researching I found this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/VFIO/comments/amvcm2/gpu_passthrough_with_an_exmining_card/ 7 And found in the replies: „It looks to me like the inf hacking done by LTT was simply to map PCI device IDs to different driver sections (ie. fooling the driver to handle a P106-100 the same as it would a GTX1060), but with a VM we can simply change the device ID (ex. x-pci-device-id=0x1c03). You'd also need to find a compatible ROM for the VM or hack your own to change the device ID and checksum, but you'd only need to do this once versus hacking every new NVIDIA driver. Of course you still have a card with no video output and I don't know if the drivers will let you create a headless desktop to use with Looking Glass or if you need a companion graphics that supports rendering into the frame buffer.“ That is EXACTLY what I wanted to do. Except I have a P104 mining card (GTX 1070 GDDR5X version equivalent) which HAS VIDEO OUTPUTS. The card is very specific, because it's severely limited by it's VBIOS. The card in fact has PCIe 3.0 x16 support and 8GB of VRAM but it has been limited by VBIOS to 1.1 x4 and 4GB of VRAM. Also the video outputs don't work (their hardware does, but they simply don't output anything because the whole display engine is disabled in VBIOS). I tried hardware flashing it but then I couldn't get windows and drivers to cooperate because they still thought it's a P104 because the device ID is not tied to the BIOS but rather to the hardware. I've done my best to hardware hack this gpu into a 1070 but then I discovered that since Maxwell the GPU Device ID is tied to the GPU die and cannot be physically modified in any way. So my last resort was obviously hacking outdated drivers in Windows but I found that incredibly impractical and unstable. Then I found that you can just pass it through to a VM and set the main OS to report a different ID to it, thus making the VM think it's a different GPU. And so started my long research... I found a very nicely explained guide for begginers: https://mathiashueber.com/windows-virtual-machine-gpu-passthrough-ubuntu/ that I am willing to use (please tell me if it's wrong before I invest countless hours troubleshooting something that's outdated or straight-up wrong). I found that an option called x-pci-device-id exists that can do exactly what I want (even u/aw___ said that in his reply and if I understood correctly he is one of the devs) but I didn't find any clear explanation where to put it in the XML config (if at all, I also didn't find which file to edit in the first place) and with what syntax. Here it is stated in the replies that option is just an experimental feature and that you need to do something different to make it work: https://www.reddit.com/r/VFIO/comments/d6cmes/possible_to_spoof_pciid_of_device_passed_through/ So of course all that left me confused and I need help: Which linux distro do you recommend for this? Please give a quick read to the guide and tell me if something significant (or notable) has changed since then (or is wrong) or link to a known good (and hopefully simple) guide? Any help is appreciated! Does x-pci-device-id still exist in QEMU and how does it work (also is it placed in the XML config file and if so where in the config is it put)? What's the difference between the regula pci-device-id/vendor-id and pci-SUB-device-id/vendor-id? Again, I am a noob, please be exact with your answers, as if you are explaining to a child (maybe not that much, but you get the point). Forgive me if I took too much of your time
  7. The problem is the next 1 gaming PC 1 Tv they are too far from each but in the same house I want to play on my tv without moving the pc from where it is my internet connection isn´t too good for using cloud streaming and barely enough for Lan streaming, also due to the quarantine I can´t buy stuff I tried to install retropie with parsec, which was not so good due to commands and problems installing packages. but that does not matter since using parsec between 2 PC's with Windows 10 shows that the quality was not good. Then, I tried steam link and moonlight + Nvidia experience stream to take full advantage of the Lan connection capacity, the results were decent but with quality problems due to the low bit rate due to my internet connection. I remembered that I had an l300 NComputing, perfect because it did not need much connection, it worked for Lan, I could create a user to protect my information and many advantages. the problem is that I create these devices and for the most part the virtual machines do not share the video card, so there would be no joke. my question is: Do these drives share GPUs or could they? Any idea to be able to play on my tv without dying trying?
  8. So I have a fairly old Intel SSD that I'm trying to host some Hyper-V VMs with. The trouble I'm having is that the performance is terrible for some reason. Run crystal disk mark and the numbers look normal, but try to install a Debian VM and the utilization hits 100% and the writes slow to a couple MB/s at best. I checked the SSD over with Intel's utility, no issues found and reportedly plenty of life left. Did a firmware update, no change in the issue. Do the same thing on a Kingston A400 and it works as you'd expect a SSD to. Snappy and fast. Even my SanDisk boot drive kicks its butt (which scored way lower random reads and writes in diskmark). I'm very perplexed as to what's going on here. Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this?
  9. On my pc (Win10) I have a hyper-v vm running which is also on Win10. When it is running using an external switch, it causes my PC to blue screen. Sometimes it can go all day without a crash but other times it could crash multiple times in a row. The blue screens only seem to occur when the vm is running using an external switch, but doesnt happen as often with an internal switch. The external switch is shared with the host OS. Using blue screen viewer, it has indicated these as issues: hal.dll NNSPRV.sys ntoskrnl.exe These have shown for the last 3 blue screens. Occasionally vmswitch.sys is indicated as the issue. I have updated my network drivers to the latest version I could find and that didn't work, I have also updated to the latest BIOS version which hasn't helped either. I use the vm for Plex related applications and use the PC for working/gaming. Any support would be greatly appreciated as this is one major headache for me!
  10. I'm new to VMs so apologies if this is a stupid question. I want to run a windows 10 VM on a separate keyboard, mouse and monitor. I want it to essentially be a separate computer which my little brother can game on while I get through assignments cause I'm reluctant to go to the library during a pandemic.. It's a beefy PC so it should be able to handle a windows 10 VM running the games he wants to play while I do my work. Just wondering if it's possible and how I do it.
  11. TLDR; I'm looking to build a server to run 4 Windows VM and RDP in via thinclients. How do I license each Windows 10 install on the VM's? I'm trying to draw up a proof of concept for a small business of my family member. They have recently had an increase in employment and are struggling to get suitable laptops/desktops for each employee. Currently there are 2 Offices in different locations, 4 employee's per office. The 1st Office opened has 4 Desktops with Intel Dual Cores (unsure of exact model), 8Gb RAM. The newest office currently only has 2 laptops one of which being a private one only my family member can access. All Office work is administration, so Office apps and more intensive above that use case. I dabble with homelab virtualization projects and believe that the growing needs of this business would be perfect for a server VM configuration. I firstly plan to only deploy a single 12 or 16 Core server at the first office and moving the existing desktops to the new office. I plan on buying some older intel xeon workstation (preferably with 2 sockets) so that I can upgrade to more cores in future if we need them. I'll use ESXi to manage and create the, currently, 4 VM's and plan to either ebay some refurb'd thinclients or use WTWare on some Raspberry Pi's to use as thinclients to RDP to server. The one issue I am currently struggling with, with homelab i just create a VM for Windows 10 Pro and do license it because its a throwaway VM Project, in a business I'd have to license each VM. How would I go about doing this? I'm so confused by the Windows Server Licensing and this appears to be a replacement for VMWare ESXi, it is also very expensive and appears to only cover 2 Window Pro Vm's? Feel free to share any other information you think i may have missed in all this too? Added note, I do plan on eventually added a VPN to the server so that i could also use it to RDP from the 2nd Office as employee numbers grow. As it currently stands im more interested in replacing the 4 Desktops in Office 1 with VM's that have 3 cores each and 8Gb RAM each with possible expansion in future by making everyone dual core or upgrading CPU's down the line. BTW by dual core i mean 4 vCore as in 2 physical 4 threads.
  12. This is what i get when i try to run the docker command. Any tips on how to get it working?` Hyper-v Vm running debian
  13. Im trying to set up a steam cache server on a vm. But i cant ping the vm machine from my main computer. Whats wrong? The vm can connect to the internet on its own, but i cant ping it locally Im using hyper-v as virutalization. I have 2 vms running. 1 is running pihole. 2 (trying to run steamcache) - but i cant even ping it.... the dns on the steamcache is the pihole dns. Didnt help to change it to 1.1.1.1 Both are using the same viritual internet switch - is that the problem? The Steamcache IP shows up in router
  14. Hi! Thanks for taking the time to read this post. I want to have a few Virtual Machines on my server for ISPConfig and WebHosting, and also a KVM Machine with GPU Passthrough for occasional gaming. I know that for the VM with GPU passthrough, I will probably use KVM with Virt-Manager as I saw in my research but for the rest, I don't know if I should use VirtualBox or Virt-Manager. I did some research and didn't have any appropriate answer. This is why I am coming here. Thanks a lot
  15. Hey, i'm searching for an used 4U server witch has room for at least 6 dual slot RX480 GPUs to run 6 VMs witch dedicated GPU with PCIe passthrough. I know the video from linus with the SYS-4027GR-TR Supermicro server, but i cann't find it on the used market. Has anyone an idea which model cloud work?
  16. Hi, I'm currently looking into consoloditating my systems at home. Currently i'm running a Ryzen 5 1600 based Gaming-System and have an uncomfortably large number of raspberry pis running certain smaller web-applications such as OctoPrint, Network Management Software and more. I'm also running a two bay Synology NAS with 4TB of net-storage, connected via Gigabit-Ethernet. I'm currently developing my own Smart-Home-Management Software, which was supposed to be running on a Raspberry Pi as well, but the apparently there is no Java 13 Version for ARM v6 and I'm not wanting to downgrade to an older Java Version. The Raspberry PI 4 (and propably 3 as well) officially support Java 11 and there are also Java 13 Versions available for ARM v7 and v8, but I do not really want to continue to buy more Raspberry PIs :D I'm currently thinking of buying a server rack and a 4U server to accomplish the following tasks: Replacing my NAS (starting with propably 2x4TB HDD and a SSD for running the OS and caching, with room for future upgradeability), replacing the above mentioned Raspberry Pis with one VM for every Raspberry PI, running the Smart-Home-Management Software. Also my parents are currently running a really old machine and I've been suggesting them to upgrade for a while now. Now I'm thinking wether it might be possbile to run a Windows VM on the server and having them connect via a Thin Client. I was thinking of repurposing one of the currently deployed Pis as a thin client for them. When it comes to hardware I'm currently thinking of repurposing my Ryzen 5 1600 and the mainboard in the server and upgrading my Gaming-System with new Hardware. Is this concept even reasonable or would I run into to many problems on the way? Even though I'm not super-experienced with networking and especially VMs I have fun tinkering around with technology and usually find solutions to problems occuring along the way (usually with the help of google ;)) If you think its reasonable, what specs should I be expecting for the other components? How much RAM would I need, could I utilise an old GTX750ti I have lying around, should I consider 10GBE or would you think this is overkill? I'm currently reaching speeds above 900Mbits when transferring video footage from my PC to my NAS and therefore I'm already nearly filling the bandwith. It doesn't feel slow by any means but it might in the future. Regarding software: I have no real clue which OS I should be opting for and which OS would be the best for those "single-purpose" VMs. Also: I have never tried deploying thin clients myself. Do I need a special windows version for this? Can I automate the connection process on the Thin Client to a point where my parents wouldn't notice, that the PC is not running under their desk? They are not really familiar with tech and simply clicking "continue" on a unfamiliar screen might confuse them enough to call me. Thank you for helping me out. Jojomatik
  17. I want to make a virtual disk, that can be mounted to a vm, that points to a folder similar to a symlink but with a virtual drive. I don't care what software I would need hyper-v, vmware, etc. Is there any way to do this without using the whole drive / partition?
  18. New build based around the EPYC 64 core CPU(s) and unRAID OS. Being how no one person in their right mind would do something like this (aside from LMG for our viewing pleasure) I figured I would "theory craft" an updated 7 Gamers 1 CPU system. I understand how completely ridiculous this is. Just building the 10 systems separately would be more sane, but with the new R&D room they have, I would love to see an in-house case designed to fit this monstrosity or something like it. 19. Hey Linus and Community! :-D. How are you all doing?, I'm new to the Linus tech tips forum, but I'm a long time follower of Linus's Videos. As stated above is this even feasibly in the realm of possibility????, if it is I would love to see it done(I'm poor so I lack the hardware). But Linus is crazy, I hope he's crazy enough for this, SQUARE UP LINUS.
  20. I put together 3 parts lists; the first was a Threadripper 3960x based machine designed to work as 3 systems, two for gaming and one content creation. It came out to 4,430$. When I tallyd up the total for the machines by themselves rather than integrated into one machine, I came out to 1,814$ for the content creation machine (Ryzen 9 3900x + GTX 1660 Super + 32gb ram and some other bells and whistles like mirrored hard drives). The Gaming machines came out to 1,440$ each. (Ryzen 5 3600 + RTX 2060 Super and some other bells and whistles like liquid cooling). This came out to 4696$, 266$ less than our fully integrated system. With some smarter parts listing you could definitely maximize your savings, but I DEFINITELY think looking into the lower-end threadrippers as several virtual machines is worth looking into, and it would be very interesting to see the results if someone were to actually try this.
  21. Hello guys, I saw some Linus "multiple games on one CPU" Videos. I Was wondering, if It would be possible to run certain VMs (maybe through unraid? 1-3 machines), remote access those VMs and I will eben be able to run some AAA games on them. I want to build a PC with a ryzen 9 CPU and 3 gpus which everyone of These is allocated to a specific VM. Then I want to buy some cheap Intel NUC (one for my home Office, one for my sons room, one for the living room, which will be attached to a TV) and a Laptop for my wife (which should also connect to a VM, so my son, my wife and me have all his own VM. Why Do I think it's a good idea? I have only one big machine, which would be build in a storeroom for example. I can do my stuff on any machine in my house and I can continue my work at any other machine, with the same files and Desktop envirement. I can run some FPS games in my Office (yes I have a 144Hz Display for 'work' :P) and can switch to the machine attached to the TV to play some rocket League with my wife. I am able to get a wired Gigabit LAN connection in every room. Do someone already built some similar Kind of project and could share his experience? Especially the gaming Part one. Is It even possible to get 144Hz 1080p through a Gigabit lan connection? For now I am Planning to use my gtx 1060, 1080ti and my rtx 2070. How Do I manage those NUCs automatically remote access those VMs? I thought about some embedded fast booting Linux distros, which autorun some remote access programs after bootup. I would be gratefull for any shared experience.
  22. I have set up a work environment in a place that has periodic problems with electricity. I thought of making a VM on a server with RAID1 to prevent dataloss. From my point of view the VM will be software safe due to snapshots and backups and physically the data is relatively secure on RAID1. I look forward to any ideas, recommendations, tips etc Thank you in advance :D
  23. Good evening at the time that I am writing this I am following through a VM Lab for the A+ cert course in my home town I am familiar w/ most things computer but have neglected the programing aspect of PC. the problem I am facing at this time is understanding why things are being added that are not in the directory (the "help" sheet that pops up when your in the cmd window). Anyways i understand some of it like /s /h are for showing the hidden files, etc; xcopy c:\drivename\* l:\data\ /s /e /y . the line above is the one I am trying to understand better I comprehend that I wont become knowledgeable of this type of system overnight but i believe that reaching out to this community would be helpful in getting me there i understand that it copies data/files/etc to a folder and saves it in the "l" drive in this case, i simply dont understand where the system pulled the /s /e /y from or what they stand for individually when being used under other commands anyways please let me know if you have seen this before or know/understand the concept behind this stuff I am just trying to get knowledgable.
  24. Hello everyone! I have a general question as to what OS I should run on my server and what raid option would be the best. I am currently looking at doing FreeNas server. I think that i want to us FreeNAS loaded via USB within the slower internal USB ports on the server, But I was wondering if that is the best option, or if a low cost option for me that will better suit my needs, would be to use an SSD for this budget build internally. I have a good understanding of this stuff, minimal command line and such, but would prefer at least some basic GUI for simplicity. What I am trying to accomplish: 200Mbps Down 20Mbps Up internet connection at my highest speed test run Home NAS -A place for a central repository of all the computers in the house to store files and back up to nightly -Something I can easily(but securely) access from anywhere Server- Plex, Kodi,ETC. -I want to take all my Music and Movies (5tb of media) and add them to a media share -as it fills up i want to expand the drive capacity; so adding drives to the pools easily would be a great feature! I would love something with decent security features. short of building a Pfsense Router. Ubiquiti US-24-250W UniFi Switch - 24 Ports Managed Ubiquiti- USG Enterprise Gateway Router Ubiquiti Networks UAP-AC-PRO-5-US Wireless Indoor / Outdoor 802.11ac PRO Access Point, 5-Pack Very soon I plan to duplicate this build for a server at my parents house as a backup and if mine ever goes down that one could pick up where this one left off, if at all possible. System specs: Dell R410 1U Server -2 x Intel Xeon E5645 Hexa-Core 2.40GHz CPU Processors -32GB Ram (16 GB per CPU) -4 x WD Red NAS pro SATA 4tb drives; 3.5" Drives -Hot Swappable -again, going to be increasing the size of Drives as my Media collection needs more space -would prefer to run some sort of Raid 10or what is recommended for best redundancy -2 x 64GB USB 3.0 Flash drives for OS -an Adata 120gb SSD for data cache -Currently working on a FreeNas build; that's why I am looking to use for the OS, Open to getting a small SSD if needed for another operating system. -500 Watt power supply and currently working on getting another 500 Watt redundant supply for the redundant side of the server. -its also on a backup-UPS- Tripp Lite SMART500RT1U Smart Pro 500 VA 300 Watts 1U Rackmount 7 Outlet UPS -ONBOARD SAS 6/IR Raid Controller ( dell part# HM030) -Dell iDRAC6 DRAC 6i Remote Access Board K869T I build desktops for customers but never any servers, I've been doing this for 20yrs and decided to dabble into building a home server, so I can actually use the desktop more efficiently instead of a home "Server" as its ended up being mostly used for. Lagging more and more as I have 6 drives in my Main Desktop and 5 on my backup in my office. I want to have more Peace of mind in Data Storage. I do Practice the 3-2-1 rule for backup; however I maintain 2 backups offsite, 1 of which is for a customers backup data as well. The money that I save will let me finally build a gaming water-cooled custom rig with RGB. For once a new rig for myself instead of used parts! Again ANY help i could get from you guys is VASTLY appreciated and Please stay civil, I don't want to start any Verbal confrontations! lol
  25. Resolved Resolution: Changing from VirtIO to E1000E. Hi Guys Im a pretty technical guy, have searched about but nothing come close to what i was trying to Troubleshoot. Appears theres an issue with my UnRAID VM Dropping 1 of the 2 NICS. I put a small amount of Load through the 2nd NIC it will drop the Connections and that also means, unless a reboot the VM itself, i cannot connect to the Box using the LAN IP Assigned... (has an 192.168.1.XX) IP Address Assigned to it.. Any reasons why this would be? Thank
