Hello all, I've got two developers with Dell OEM i9-10900 SFF systems that clearly aren't keeping up (I didn't buy them nor would've, all I'll say about that). Looking to build DIY rigs to replace it, which I've already done on some workstations and servers. There's a mix of LGA 1700 and LGA 1718 for these machines, so I'm not partial to either. Where it gets complicated is with Visual Studio performance specifically, and whether there's specific advantages between Radeon or Intel iGPUs. Also, whether its worth just getting an F SKU Intel CPU and dropping in an RTX 3050 6GB or such. I do see Visual Studio has a CUDA package, but I'm not sure if this is worth the extra complexity. Currently, I'm looking at the 14700k and Asus Prime Z790M-Plus (though it doesn't have triple display outputs) in a mATX standard configuration build, likely a Fractal Design R5 Silent. I wouldn't be overclocking, likely TDP limiting them, but I'd rather have the binning and clock speed boost from the K SKU CPU compared to the non-K, especially if they current cost the same. I do really like the Asus Pro CSM series boards, but there's no VRM heatsinks which might be a problem for these systems. Its also a 125W TDP limited board, which honestly isn't a problem. 125W is the sweet spot for Intel regarding performance/watt anyways. 13700k is also a worthy contender which is about $60 less than the 14700k for not much less performance. Anyone strongly familiar with hardware recommendations for Visual Studio and some of the potential features? Would it even be worth looking at an RTX 4060 8GB if there's benefits to CUDA and RTX around the corner for VS?

I don't really know if I should be asking such questions here, but since this community helped me a lot with various problems I thought I must ask for help. So, for a couple weeks now I can't use Visual Studio 2022 at all because of freezes upon opening a project. VS seems to work fine with no project opened, but as soon as I try to open any VS solution the whole programs freezes. I tried reinstalling VS and other possible solutions from the Internet, but none of them seemed to help. Some info about my VS installation: Microsoft Visual Studio Community 2022 Version 17.8.1 VisualStudio.17.Release/17.8.1+34316.72 Microsoft .NET Framework Version 4.8.09032 I appreciate any bit of help and will provide any additional info if needed!

C - "Access violation writing location" when inputing string
Matttaj69 posted a topic in Programming
Hi, I am working on a simple code in C, have got the logic almost sorted. However, in order for my program to work, I need a user to input a string. I have tried <scanf_s("%s", potr);> (shown in picture), but while debugging, it has ended on that line with "Access violation writing location" error. I have tried putting the string directly as a parameter in the function call, which worked perfectly fine. Any ideas what could be wrong? Notice: long story short, I must use Microsoft Visual Studio and the "safe" version of scanf. Screenshot of the part of my code: Thanks in advance -
I am a student and I know a little python but wanted to dabble with c++. I have tried installing visual studio and vs code many times, even on fresh install of windows, but it just neve seems to work. It always tells me "The exe file not find" or something like that. This time, I thought I fixed it by choosing the console app template and it worked, until I changed the code. The exe file neve updates. It always shows 'hello world', which was the output by the sample code. Its really frustrating, as there are not many other options out there. I tried dev-c++, but the interface is very outdated and its always in light mode. Please Help Me

Hi When I start my PC after rebooting or shutting down, I always get a prompt that says "how would you like to open this file". So I picked Notepad to see what it was, and this is the dialogue it gave me. It happens every single time I start the system. I think it has to do with Visual Studio? But I am not sure. Does anyone know how to stop this? I am using windows 11. Edit: I had to create a paste bin link because the whole notepad output didn't fit in the post https://pastebin.com/uWr9YDgZ

Model Matrix and Vector Transforms Optimized By SIMD
patrickjp93 posted a blog entry in Real Game Engine Code Optimization
I'm sick to death of people telling me "if it was so easy, the game devs would have done it by now. They know better than you do." Here is visible, incontrovertible proof that the games industry can get a huge boost from taking advantage of SIMD today, especially when games require Sandy Bridge or later hardware (meaning AVX is available, but not AVX2 for our purposes). First Example: Mesh Transform By Translation Using AVX Intrinsics Example updated and trimmed for readability. My average timings and variance for a 4960HQ on my Macbook Pro Retina under Fedora 24, latest kernel as of 10/15/2016: Compiler: Clang++ 3.8.0 Flags: -std=c++14 -O3 -march=native Mesh size in floats: 90000 Scalar translation took 6.08489e-04s +- 0.11032e-04s Vector translation took 5.82480e-05s +- 0.14391e-05s The short of it is you can write tighter, denser loops with a little bit of effort. While the latency for each vector add is 3 cycles and each multiplication is 5, multiple iterations can be in flight at once on a single thread. The throughput for the vectorized version is 8x the scalar version without any unrolling. Thus, the loop can also easily fit into the small loop detector which can shave off some cycles due to prefetch removal and result forwarding between iterations. Assuming you don't run out of memory bandwidth, you can actually do other tasks on this same core without using hyper threading as long as they do not depend on the result of the mesh manipulation. Looking at the SB block diagram, with each clock achieving both an 8-wide vector multiplication and 8-wide vector addition, you can achieve more than 50GFlops per core on a 2600K, but the memory bandwidth will not allow you to load and store the results as quickly as you can request and produce them at a rate of 50GB/s without high-end dual-channel DDR3 or a quad-channel configuration. It would be best to use a C++ 17 stack-less resumable function to encapsulate this and do short bursts of another task when more than 3 L3 cache misses happen in a row (this can be tracked with a hardware profiler to determine optimal burst lengths). If there is interest, I can go into nuances of leveraging vectorization techniques in conjunction with other data transforms relevant to gaming (though I'm not giving away my AVX ray tracer). I can also look into benchmarking multicore use of this and balancing it out against other tasks to achieve best performance for a given configuration. -
Hi, I have set a shortcut to run any python file in VS Code. The shortcut is " ` " ("oem_3") key. However, I need this key while using other languages -- LaTeX for example. Thus, I need to configure this shourtcut such that it is executed only when the file is a .py file. I found out that one can configure shortcuts this way by using a "when" clause using keybindings.json file. For example this shortcut "ctrl+s" will only be executed when the file is a .tex file and the LaTeX extension is enabled. I want to do a similar thing for the following python extension by adding a "when" clause to the following shortcut But I don't understand how this syntax works. Can anyone guide me? Thanks.

so i want to make a object of a class in another class but outside a method.i will be initializing the returned value to a int variable called s and it will be used inside a method called timer1_Tick for doing some calculations.when i tried this i get a error saying: A field initializer cannot reference the non-static field, method, or property.'h' in the second line is underlined in red. what could be the problem.is it possible to make object of classes outside methods like this? note: i dont want to make this object inside the timer1_tick method because the value of the variable doesnt work the way i want when i do it that way.when i set the value of s manually to a certain number outside the timer1_tick method it works.so i want to initialize the value i get from the other class to to the variable s but it must be outside the method timer tick.if theres any other way to do it please let me know.thanks Home h = new Home(); int s = h.convert(); private void timer1_Tick(object sender, EventArgs e) { }

Macbook Air Running Microsoft Visual Studio
Macimoar posted a topic in Laptops and Pre-Built Systems
I am planning a short trip where I'll be wanting to keep up with my unity development. I am flying so it would be somewhat inconvenient to have to take my desktop. Would my MacBook Air, base configuration nothing extra, be powerful enough to run Windows 10, Unity, and Visual Studio on a Virtual Box?- 3 replies

cn.ConnectionString = @"Data Source=user3;Initial Catalog=office_db;Integrated Security=True"; cmd.Connection = cn; cn.Open(); string s = "select date from salary where Emp_ID ='3'"; SqlCommand query = new SqlCommand(s, cn); SqlDataReader reader = query.ExecuteReader(); reader.Read(); String db = reader["date"].ToString(); reader.Close(); cn.Close(); label2.Text= db; so this is my code and im able to get the date and time both in my output when i display it in the label. i want only my date to be there and only in this format: dd/mm/yyyy. and then i want to get the date (dd) convert it to a int for doing some calculations.any ideas how this can be done?

i need to get the date using date time picker and save it in database table column that has the data type date. i tried this way but it didnt work: string finaldate = dateTimePicker1.Text; cn.ConnectionString = @"Data Source=user-PC\SQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=employee_db;Integrated Security=True"; cmd.Connection = cn; cmd.Parameters.Clear(); cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("@Date", finaldate); cmd.CommandText = "insert into employee(Date)values(@Date)"; cn.Open(); cmd.ExecuteNonQuery(); cn.Close();

so i have a table in the database with a column named finish that is declared with the datatype time.i want to call this stored time to my c# program.i have tried the following code and i have tried to display the variable value in a label to see what is the value in it but it seems that no value has been assigned to the label.it just displays label 3.i also want to separately extract the hours,minutes and seconds from the time in the database and put it to different int variables such as H,M and S for doing calculations. any ideas how this can be done? cn.ConnectionString = @"......."; cmd.Connection = cn; cn.Open(); string query5 = "select finish from activities where act_ID ='2'"; SqlCommand query5 = new SqlCommand(query5, cn); SqlDataReader reader5 = query5.ExecuteReader(); reader5.Read(); String ftime = reader5["finish"].ToString(); reader5.Close(); cn.Close(); label3.Text = ftime;
