  1. Hey Linus and Community! :-D. How are you all doing?, I'm new to the Linus tech tips forum, but I'm a long time follower of Linus's Videos. As stated above is this even feasibly in the realm of possibility????, if it is I would love to see it done(I'm poor so I lack the hardware). But Linus is crazy, I hope he's crazy enough for this, SQUARE UP LINUS.
  2. I'm trying to build a virtual Network lab simulator setup for a classroom setting. Thinking about using a big ol 32GB RAM/i9 CPU server with GNS3 on it and just have like 10 laptops for the students to connect to it. However, a couple of things are required: the setup needs to be completely mobile, remote capability from anywhere in the world, each student laptop GNS3 session is completely separate from one another so they won't interfere with each other's work, not looking to spend more than $30,000. I'd like to know your ideas how this can be accomplished.
  3. I was looking for some advice for my current server build. Any help appreciated. PS: I took this template from a reddit forum lol What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using. * I am a machine learning developer looking to build a virtualization server. I need high computational resources on the fly. I am also an occasional gamer, so I want the option to run games. Additionally want to possible run a plex server on this build. * I need to use multiple OS's constantly for what I do, so I want to be able to run many operating systems concurrently. I want to connect to my machine with a monitor and connect externally via the internet with GUI or SSH. What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes? Let's assume that money is not a concern When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy. Let's assume right now. What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (Tower/OS/monitor/keyboard/mouse/etc) Just the PC components, I am not concerned with the case (fun fact I might be building it into a desk), or peripherals Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location? Canada If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated. Nothing to reuse Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?** Overclocking is a yes Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc) CUDA, and possibly RAID Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-tower/full-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components? No case concerns, as I might be building it into a desk Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference? Nope Other Info: Let's assume that money is not a concern, and I am looking to incorporate an 18 core CPU, 64GB ram, and 4 graphics cards maybe P4000s or even RTX 2080s. I want to share the 4 graphics cards between the OS's if that's possible. What's the best value hardware for this scenario, and possible virtualization software setup. Needless to say, I want to minimize video tearing and I/O complications.
  4. hi how do i copy my virtual machine from one place to another. i tried to export it but it doesnt and fails
  5. Hi all, I’m interested in building a VR set up for under $4000. I need to purchase a PC and am open to both laptop and desktop options. What configuration might maximize immersion/graphics quality? I’d like to use VR for gaming and general recreation. How does the Oculus Rift compare to the Vive Pro, immersion wise? VR and PCs fall outside my wheelhouse. I welcome all thoughts. Thank you.
  6. Is there any way to fake at least threads or create virtual ones? Same for cpu cores
  7. Good morning from Germany, I would like to connect a physical Maschine to a virtual internal switch (for example in hyper-v) to test software without having multiple machines available to the router. Haven't tried it yet but if I would create a pfSense VM with a physical nic to the PC and a internal one for internet connectivity wouldn't work, right?
  8. I have seen the 2-in-1 virtualization, and 7-in-1 gaming builds. I was wondering if you could do something similar with a gigabyte brix 1060nvidia(GB-BNi7HG6-1060) and an external docking station for the second video card? I think you have to have two video cards minimum to do this? I was thinking you could use the docking station hdmi for the host OS, and nvidia 1060 card for the virtualized guest win7/10 via pass-through 3d. I am trying for a Linux host (ubuntu 16+) and windows 7-10 for the guest OS. I have already confirmed this box has VT-x and VT-d
  9. I was wondering where vr technology would be in 10 years time? What areas would you like to see improved? I read this article (Virtual Reality Technology – What Lies Ahead?) where they suggest that in the future it may be possible to 'upload' your brain into a vr world! What does everybody think? Personally I would like to be be able to feel things :-)
  10. I haven’t found a wealth of details on the subject, but what I have found are all several years old and mostly say that I need VMWare ESXi, a server-grade virtualisation solution, to pass through my GT 740 to my Windows 7 VM. Is this true? Or would it be possible to use my regular VMWare Workstation setup to do so? What about with VirtualBox?
  11. Hey guys, Every day it seems something new comes out about the Ryzen and people freaking out. So my question is for the guys who already got one and have hopefully done some of this work on it. I'm looking at going to the 1700 and doing a 2 gamers 1 CPU setup, each getting 8 Threads, dedicated GPU and 8GB each would be enough for me for now. My Question is has anyone tested the Ryzen virtual PC capabilities yet ? its between this or a second hand X99 setup with a i7-5xxx 6core Personally I'd rather have the brand new Ryzen but just wanted to find out what the latest word was
  12. Hi All, I have a running Virtual Machine is Hyper V with about 4 different virtual adaptors. I need to give each adaptor a unique name (they were all original called something like adaptor but they are all now called 1) The only way I have found so far is to use powershell and type "Rename-VMNetworkAdapter" with an option at the end for the new name. If I run this command with the VM name and the new name then I can rename all of the virtual adaptors on the virtual machine but this doesn't help as the final result is a virtual machine with 4 adaptors that all use the same name. There is an optional parameter "-name" which lets you name the adaptor you want to change the name of, however, this doesn't help as they are all currently using the same name so they all change again. haha I am reading from this doc for context https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powershell/module/hyper-v/rename-vmnetworkadapter?view=win10-ps If someone can think of a way to get around this then I am forever in your debt! Thanks, Scott
  13. I have an iMac, and I was curious if I could play windows games on it. I first started thinking of turning into a windows machine all together, but I was wondering if running a virtual machine inside of Mac OS would be possible to game with? Anyone have any experience with this?
  14. Hi, so... the tittle seems legit... If you don't want to read all, scroll down to the RESUME at the end. I have my new PC (Ryzen 5 2400G) running and playing all day (when im not working). The problem is that recently i found my copy of "Shogun Total War: Warlord Edition"... i've tried everything, all solutions i've found online, and seems to go nowere. The problem is that my hardware and the SO (W10) don't wan't to run it. The game was released in 2000, so, retro-compatibility is a nono. I come with an idea, set a VM, get my older Wxp and install the game in it, another "fiasco". The game runs at 3fps, not playable at all. Diggin in the configurations I ended up in the hardware administrator on the XP in the VM... to my surprise is running in software mode, i go to the unknown devices and is there, the graphics card, but windows reject to recognize it. No drivers to install and no way to solve it. The main problem is that after 4 days+ reading and surfing the net, it seems that "GPU EMULATION" doesn't exist, or i really suck in english (not my language so im working hard tipyng here). If is someone out there that knows more of this than me, ¿is it possible to "emulate older gpu's" in a newer gpu?, that includes triking the OS to thinking that i have another gpu apart from the integrated one (like GTX450 or ATI equivalent), and emulated in my integrated GPU or even in the CPU, so i can install the drivers in the VM-Wxp to run the game. Resume: Is some way to emulate an older GPU on my newer GPU or CPU (doesn't matter in wich one) so i can play older games in my virtual machine with WindowsXP? All other options (like compatibility mode, even editing files of the game) are a nono, no one works. (The game: "Shogun Total War: Warlord Edition")
  15. Good Morning and Happy Monday! I have had this problem before and found out it was an incorrect setting on the virtual machine. I had been setting it to NAT instead of Bridged. Recently, our entire network had a complete stroke and had to reset everything. Since then, the virtual machine (running Windows XP) is showing that a network cable is unplugged. 1. I checked the physical connection to make sure it hadn't come loose. 2. Re-Checked Virtual Machine settings to make sure the connection is bridged. 3.Tried using both WiFi and Ethernet. Anything else I should try?
  16. Hello, I am not too familiar with Virtual Machines and I wanted to try Hyper V to test programs, but i had some questions before i tried it out. 1.Does adding a virtual machine ( of Windows 10 using Hyper V) slow down my computer when i do not have it opened. (Basically does it run in the background when i am not using it) 2. Are my specs fine to run it? (I have a AMD FX 6300 6 Core, 8gb ram, Powercooler Radeon r9 270, Windows 10 Pro, also i don't have an SSD so i'm not sure if that will be a big deal or not) 3. Can viruses from a VM be transfer to my main desktop? (Not that i am trying to download viruses but the programs i want to test i am testing to see if they do have viruses) 4. If in the the future i need more room on my computer am i able to delete the VM and the OS with it? Thanks in advance!!!
  17. Hello everyone! After the advent of the infamous Windows 10 (doesn't matter v1511 or v1607), IT problems and headaches have skyrocketed. Couple of times I heard Luke saying the annoyance of trying to benchmark machines with the instability of Windows 10. I have to say that it can get much worse when you have Active Directory. Our machines after join the Active Directory are now unbearable to login and use. Even when using software like DisableWinTracking, Spybot Anti-beacon etc, Microsoft services some times take almost 100% of disk and/or memory usage, and arround 90% (!!) of CPU usage most at login time and randomly during the day. Logins are much worst than boot times ( sometimes taking more than 5 minutes to release the desktop even after it is show to the user in a good day). You guys don't notice that much because (that's a guess) because Core i3 computer with 4Gb of ram and HDD (in the majority of the machines) are not that common outside Brazil (where I live). But, even with some Core i5 and i7 the situation is not good. We are doing some testing disabling more Windows 10 annoying service and scheduled tasks, which helped (using Download Destroy Windows 10 Spying recommended by Barnacules Nerdgasm helped very much). Doing tests two things came to our attention: The same machines that we tested with Windows 10 32bit performed so much better than with Windows 10 64bit, Of course we loose some RAM but the performance is like downgrading to Windows 7; In the IT department, more specifically the support team, we installed Linux (Ubuntu, Fedora, OpenSUSE) and we are using Windows 10 on virtual machines (VM). Which is impressive since even using Windows 10 64bit inside a VM with less available RAM the performance is better. How is your experience with this ... work of art of Microsoft?
  18. Hey guys! So I was wondering if anyone out there knows if a virtual mixamp provides less quality to a hardware mixamp? For exmaple, I'm using Voicemeeter Banana to mix my optical output to my Astro Pro Mixamp and my VOIP output (3.5mm headphone jack straight into the 3.5mm microphone jack) So currently I have my Blue Yeti to record my voice, the 3.5mm headphone/mic to record Voip, then mix both of these audio streams together using the virtual mixamp. This allows me to record VOIP, My mic and game streams separately. So my question is, does using Voicemeeter instead of an actual mixamp afffect the quality of audio stream quality? Or would I just be better off getting a hardware mixamp? Thanks in advance!
  19. Hi, I have tried many solutions to try and get my apache virtual hosts to work but i have had no luck. I have two web servers.. one running on 192.168.2.168 and the other on 192.168.2.133 panel.euananddan.com needs to go to 192.168.2.133 on port 80 cloud.euananddan.com needs to go to 192.168.2.168 on ports 80 and 443 i have tried editing the apache config of the 192.168.2.133 server but with no luck. This is what i tried: Listen 80 Listen 443 <VirtualHost 192.168.2.133:80> ServerName panel.euananddan.com DocumentRoot "/www/" </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost 192.168.2.168:443 192.168.2.168:80> ServerName cloud.euananddan.com DocumentRoot "/www" </VirtualHost> I get this error when restarting apache: * Restarting web server apache2 (98)Address already in use: AH00072: make_sock: could not bind to address [::]:80 (98)Address already in use: AH00072: make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:443 no listening sockets available, shutting down AH00015: Unable to open logs Action 'start' failed. The Apache error log may have more information. Any help would be greatly appeciated!
  20. VR specific Android? Say it ain't so, but it seems like its going to be a thing. While I don't particularly agree with the idea that we're going to have yet another version of Android that Google won't maintain beyond giving it out to OEMs, i do think its a good idea that Google look at Androids usability as it stands and see if they can improve the VR experience of the OS. http://www.androidpolice.com/2015/03/07/report-google-has-assigned-engineers-to-build-a-version-of-android-just-for-virtual-reality/
  21. For anyone who has experienced a Atmos system in a theatre or even at home, you'll know that it does leverage your extra speakers better and it can sound better than your traditional 5.1/7/1 setup, you just need the tech to support it. Dolby going for VR is great news, immersive video is NOTHING without the sound to back up that experience, and Dolby tends to not get lazy on the sound aspect of things. http://www.engadget.com/2015/03/01/dolby-atmos-comes-to-vr/
  22. I need to know what is the best Free VPN software out on the interwebs. My mom likes to block YouTube and Skype some times using the internet routers admin page. I would just reset the router and change the password but then she might just change the network password and disable my phone so using a VPN sounds like the best option to me, unless you know a better way. Thanks
  23. Hi. The guys from the Node youtube channel have started a very interesting kickstarter project. Link to project: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/controlvr/control-vr-motion-capture-for-vr-animation-and-mor In their latest youtube video, they are already using this working setup to play multiplayer games together. Have a look: It looks really awesome in my opinion.
  24. OK so what is all this about... So I basically have the idea of building a completely ballzed out host, and off that host building multiple Virtual Machines to have what is my mind, the ideal IT computer environment for me. Please keep in mind, this is for me, it may not be in everyone's taste and at the moment is very theoretical. It WILL be expensive, it very probably WILL NOT happen (though by god I hope it does) and there are a lot of things I need to figure out that I do not know enough. So, hardware wise, THE HOST CPU: 4960X or Haswell-E refresh equivalent why? Because I need the CPU to have VT-d or be able to assign hardware from the host to the VM's its possible that the 'K' model could do this as well but as you'll see later for the money while it is expensive, I could appreciate having the additional cores. I did consider a Xeon E5-1660v as an alternative which could be paired with a dual socket mobo for an additional. I chose this because while it 'only' has 6 cores, it does have a 3.7ghz clock speed. Motherboard: Basically the equivalent to the Asus P9X79-E WS for X99, I will be running 5x GPU's and a big RAID card, I need all the throughput I can get. Memory: I've gone with 64gb in this instance, excessive but as it is essentially a resource pool for 6x machines, you'll see why later. GPU1: Another GTX780Ti, I have one, it would be nice to have a 2nd, when the 800 series come I should be able to get one a bit cheaper. GPU2: A Nvidia Quadro K4000 OR FirePro W7000. For a dedicated drawing/editing machine GPU3: GTX750Ti - New Maxwell processor, bang for buck and low power, I already have one. GPU4: GTX750Ti - Ditto, but would need to purchase. PSU: Something big like Corsair's 1500w or similar from SilverStone. OS: Xen This is the most important because for this to work, it needs to be able to do PCI-E Passthrough to the VM. If ANYONE has ANY knowledge in this area COME AT ME BRO. I need help. It doesn't have to strictly be Xen, if you know of another OS please, speak up. Cost. So obviously, this isn't cheap, at around $5200AUD without any storage, a case, a RAID card BUT as you will read on, it 'could' possibly be the more economical choice. So what VM's am I putting on here? In order of resources used, a CAD/Editing Box, a Gaming Machine, a NAS, 2x HTPC's and a Desktop. Lets break them down below with the following resource provisions. The CAD/Editing box All CPU All Memory PCI-E Passthrough of the Quadro/FirePro Basically It can consume everything the HOST has to offer, it, is the top of the food chain OS: 8.1 The Gaming Box All CPU 16/32gb Memory Passthrough of 2x PCI-E to HOPEFULLY have SLI. I haven't seen this done anywhere, I have no idea if its possible. Realistically it could probably be assigned everything as well but if I need to run something that requires a long render time, I can hopefully let the CAD box do its thing with resources available, while I get some game time in. OS: 8.1 The Desktop Limited CPU to 6-8 virtual cores 8gb Memory cap CPU Onboard Video OS: 8.1 The NAS Limited CPU 2 or 4 virtual cores 16gb Memory cap No GPU passthrough, remote console should be fine OS: FreeNAS HTPC 1 & 2 (Identical systems) Limited CPU to 2 or 4 virtual cores 8gb Memory cap PCI-E Passthrough of a GTX750Ti OS: SteamOS Why not have the Desktop, CAD and Gaming all rolled into one? Because there is no such thing as a Jack of all trades in my eyes. Jack of all trades, but master of none. Because unlike in the corporate environment I have a very, very minimal chance of actually running any of these machines simultaneously to any limit and I dont need to worry about any quality of service but my own, I can over-provision my CPU and MEM resources quite aggressively. Now... I added up a CAD/Video machine which was a 4930k with a K4000, a Gaming rig with a 4790k and the 2x GTX780Ti's and a NAS and I was @ $5800AUD already, because I would have to add an additional PSU, Mobo, CPU and local storage to every machine if it was individual, I didn't even get to HTPC's, I didn't even price cases. If I want to create what I want to do virtually as separate machines, it makes the VM Host look almost cheap, I did say almost. So how would these be laid out? Ideally I would make it look as pretty as possible, so I'd like to see it and bask in its beast-ness. Meaning I'd have it within proximity in my office. Monitors would be directly attached not via console and I would use this configuration and switch using something like Fedora to swap between CAD and Gaming machine the gaming machine connected via HDMI and the CAD via DisplayPort, Hopefully I could put one or the other to sleep and the screens to auto flip between sources OR I try and find a Dual or Quad head DisplayPort KVM  !. The NAS would be in there doing its thing, storage obviously attached but I haven't looked into drive and raid configurations as yet - connected to via console. The Desktop, just a screen and keyboard mouse and speakers sitting in a common area in the house, basically just does email, web browsing and listening to Spotify. You can run HDMI up to 150ft and USB a long way if powered back to where the host is located. Essentially silent at location. The 2x HTPC's would be exactly the same, long HDMI and USB runs back to the host, the only thing at the TV is the HDMI going into the TV and a USB IR Receiver, again, silent at location. So anyways, hopefully that makes sense, Its something I have floating around in my mind at the moment. Hopefully I will continue to plug away and solve and riddles that pop up, the first I would like to confirm is SLI on PCI-E Passthrough. If anyone has any suggestions please fire away please not flaming about overspec this and ridiculous that... I'm not really interested, if I need to change a piece of hardware for compatibility or functionality though please I'm all ears!
  25. Taking handsfree device to a whole new level @OriginalPromise EYECAN+, Samsungs latest innovative project looks very promising, EyeCan+ is the Samsungs Own second-generation eye mouse, The product is mainly aimed at allowing people with disabilities Giving them the ability to compose and edit documents as well as browse the web through simple eye movement Samsung is not the first company to introduce this technology, if you're interested check this previous news thread post from me : (damn search function! will add in later when i find it) What makes this device different is that it does not require users to wear any device, such as glasses. Instead, EYECAN+ is a single-unit, portable box that sits below the monitor, and works by wirelessly calibrating with the user's eye. Samsung previously did a similar project on eye movement co-ordinated mice control but that was done via a secondary device which user had to wear such as a plain glass fitted with the capture equipment early prototype back in 2012 with glasses Back to the EyeCan product , because i can (ba dum tiss) Once calibrated, the EYECAN+ user interface will appear as a pop-up menu in one of two different modes, rectangular menu board or floating menu wheel, both of which contain 18 different commands. Both menu types can be configured to remain at the fore of the screen. The use of all 18 commands solely requires eye movement and blinking, and each command can be selected by looking directly at the relevant icon and blinking once. EYECAN+ can remember each user’s eye characteristics.Calibration is only required for first-time users so it's as simple as that , Users can also adjust the sensitivity of EYECAN+ for both calibration and actual use. it requires the user to be situated between 60cm and 70cm from the monitor, and does not require the user to be in any specific position, Pretty solid technology & can be useful for day to day usage, but currently they have developed this tech for only charitable agencies,it's not available outside of that. Rumor is that Samsung will also create open-source documents for the design and software, letting any individual or company commercialize it. That's a good sign Please do post your review on this thread down belooooooooow, also tell me what you think about this .. Bonus: Original Source: http://global.samsungtomorrow.com/?p=44971
