  1. I heard that the motherboard makes a huge difference when it comes to virtual machines, relating specifically to things like speed and input lag. Im going to use the MSI MPG Z390, Is this good for virtualization? It works really well with both of my graphics cards that im going to use, so before I get it, it would be really nice to know if I should get a new one before I spend my money on something that doesn't work perfectly.
  2. Hey, I am on the verge of making a computer that can 1. Run two Virtual Machines at the same time. and 2. One will be Mac, one will be Windows 10. This project is going to be quite costly, and I need help on a few things before I get to buying parts and potentially losing money. These are the parts that I am going to use for this machine (hopefully they're all easy to understand what they're used for), its a little on the budget side, but thats because I dont want to spend all of my money, It would be great if it was <2500 USD. The way this machine is going to work is my host system Linux Manjaro is going to run MacOS and Windows10. I wish they could all be on at the same time, but I figured out that its better to just turn one (guest) on and the other (guest) off when using them. My first of many questions is How do I safely make one graphics card exclusive to a specific vm? I don't want to screw anything up by trying to use a graphics card on both VMS. So how will I keep them exclusive? Will the host just yoink my stronger graphics cards? because im thinking of either getting a really crappy one (or the integrated one) for the host to run on and I dont know if it will work or not. Will I need to get better components? Because I'm not sure if what Im going to get is capable for this amount of vm weirdness. How do I pass two graphics cards through to two different Vms? I haven't seen anything myself from scouring the web, and I really need help when it comes to that. Do I need more cores? I heard cores are very important to vms but i think a Ryzen 7 3700x is good, im thinking of switching it to an intel i7 9700k or maybe upgrading, I still dont know. Do I need a better motherboard and case? Ive been pretty much guessing if one goes with the other, because im not an experienced builder by any means. The Mac VM is going to be for Photo/Video editing and the Windows VM is going to be for gaming. How will I evenly allocate certain things to each system without forgetting anything? For example, on the Mac, Heavy rendering and the windows will be doing doing not too hardcore gaming, just things like minecraft, csgo, rocket league. Do I need better parts to get the best experience on each? General question, What is a headless host? what does that do? will it help? Final question. Ive been thinking you need things like 3 mice and 3 keyboards for each vm, is that true? I dont know if there's a way to just have one and move it between each vm or at least two and cycle the second pair between Mac and windows.
  3. I am planning on building a pc for my university course, cyber security, because I am in my second year using a laptop. We recently started using virtual machines but my laptop cant handle it. So I'm wanting to build a pc within the £500 budget that can run programming software, virtual machines, networking tasks smoothly. I also want to have a side of gaming and watching youtube/netflix on the side. I am happy to upgrade later down the line like around october/novermber time. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Been saving up for the past 2 years. Also I am from the U.K if that makes a difference to anything.
  4. So VMWare is supposedly targeting AMD's high-level server CPUs with their new licensing fees according to a Tom's Hardware article here. VMWare themselves have acknowledged the licensing changes in their news updates section although they've not mentioned AMD or any other company by name. Been seeing a lot of people theorizing that Intel tossed a lot of money at VMWare to do this seeing as how it seemingly doesn't touch Intel CPUs yet. Don't personally believe this to be the case but I've been proven wrong before. One way or another though, this is definitely going shake things up considering how widespread VMWare Workstation and it's parent company Dell is in the industry coupled with the shifting trends towards higher core counts. Interested in hearing other people's input on the matter though.
  5. Budget Between 2000 and 3000 euro for the PC. Already have a great UW 144hz monitor, mouse, keyboard, etc. Goal I'm building this system primarily for gaming on my 4k television and ultrawide monitor on ultra/high settings. It's also being used for software engineering tasks and running multiple virtual machines at once. Therefor the 3900x and 32GB RAM. What I'm looking for I'm looking for a powerful workhorse which is as silent as possible under heavy load. That's why I've picked the case and AIO watercooling. I'd rather buy a more powerful pc right now and be able to use it for heavier tooling in the future than having to upgrade in a few months. My current systems are a Dell XPS 7590 BN79015 and a Dell XPS 9570 BNX97003. I'm looking for a PC which is more powerful and hopefully a lot more silent when running a few VM's. I'm going for a closed off case (home-office) so RGB is not a necessity at all. What I need help with 1. Are all the components compatible with each-other? 2. Are there components worth a down- or upgrade for my goal? 3. Are there upgrades available (necessary) to make the PC as silent as possible? 6. Last summer my 3 years old msi r9 280 died, but that hasn't been much of a problem since I left home for university. This summer I will come back home and build a new gaming pc for my brother (i7 8700k, rtx2070, 16gb ram) and I figured out I might actually use it too. Is it possible to make two virtual machines out of a single graphic cards?
  7. I recently finished my new build, although I didnt check to see if my Ryzen 3 2200G (Raven Ridge) CPU is compatible with my Gigabyte GA-AX370-Gaming 3 motherboard. I tried to enable AMD-V in BIOS so I could run VMs but the option was nowhere to be found. I looked at the manuals and it did confirm there is an option to enable it, and that it is not limited to certain CPUs. I tried troubleshooting but an article I saw said some Raven Ridge CPUs have compatibility issues with newer motherboards. Is there any way I can enable AMD-V without the BIOS?
  8. So, I've just reinstalled windows since the boot time had gone from 2min 15sec to 4min since it really annoyed me. Linus was talking about his mainframe-like modern pc home idea where you've got a pc in the closet that can, preferably dynamically give processing power (or graphics power) to any device in the house and every operating system would actually be a virtual machine. I live in an apartment so I really don't need anything like that but it would be cool to have a base OS that boots in, eg. 20s and I can choose between a windows VM or a linux VM. And the difference between that and dual booting is that I can have multiple windows VM like, one for gaming, one for productivity, one for app development. You get what I mean. So my question is: Does there exist an operating system made explicitly for Virtual Machines?
  9. I was wondering if torrenting on a VM would compromise the security of using a VM in any way considering how the torrenting technology works?
  10. So i am planning to build a Workstation/Vm host(using unraid) and therefore using a dual lga 2011-3 socket mainboard, but because i'm on a "tight" budget(around 2000€) i wanted to know if you could give me your opinion about the configuration listed below. Other Parts: ASRock EP2C612 WS Intel C612 2x So.2011-3 Quad Channel DDR4 SSI EEB Intel Xeon 1620v3 evga SuperNova 750 GQ GTX 1070 Gaming x G8 GTX 950 Gaming G2 (already have this card) Crucial BX200 Seagate 1TB Desktop HDD Phanteks Enthoo Pro 32 gb ram What it should be capable of: Hosting 2-3 Vms at the same time, 2 ready for gaming the third for something like a Server(TS,dedicated game Servers) I already thought about using an Asus Z10PE-D16 WS Workstation board, but at first i wanted to ask if i can use non-ecc ram on that ASRock board (http://www.asrockrack.com/general/productdetail.asp?Model=EP2C612 WS#Specifications) Thanks already Sry. for bad english
  11. I am also thinking of getting a r410 with 2x 6 core cpu and 64gb ddr3 1333mhz ram ECC for me and my friends to host game servers on. I would also like to know if you could use a normal psu but i myself wouldn't need it. however to run all those VM's I recommend you go with 32gb 8 for Plex on ubuntu VM and 8gb for the rest, 8gb for Minecraft, Windows 10, and your media. should be perfect and the power consumption shouldn't really matter like you said at this point.
  12. Hello, I was wondering if it is possible to run one or more Virtual machines on a computer that all use the same input at the same time. For example, if i had one virtual machine open i would have two cursors (one on the VM, and one on my normal desktop). Could i move both cursors with one mouse at the same time? Same goes for the keyboard. Furthermore, any good guides i should take a look at? I have done some research on the internet, but unfortunately not a lot of success. I want to experiment with running multiple Guild Wars 2 clients, to make farming and my use of time more efficient. I would appreciate any information regarding VM's you know Kind Regards, Vincent
  13. Smart me decided I would have fun with my new i7 6700k build (not rig, please people - your PC isn't a vehicle). My fabulous idea was to run as many VM's as I could. I decided to make 19. I couldv'e sworn in VirtualBox I put them all on my 2TB hard drive, but insead put them all on my 256GB SSD. I know, *sigh*. Anyways, here is a screenshot of the result. It's absolutely fabulous.
  14. As part of a college side project I'm going to be running multiple virtual machine, on a singular desktop. there are 4 virtual machine needed to be made. one is windows sever 2016 and the other 3 are windows 10. Lastly I have 3 other external computers that each requiring remote access to Windows 10 Virtual machine. My Question is how would I do this. by saying how would I do this I meant the entire process like the configuring of the operating system and how to set them up in virtual machines
  15. So I've wanted to set up my own file server, as well as a better machine to run VMs, for a while now as a personal project. I could run both on one machine, but I pretty much have an entire spare PC from upgrading my current rig. As well I have an old desktop from ~2011 from work that we have no use for (i3 2120, 8GB), which I'm currently using to run VMs, altho it's not getting much use right now. As well, I can probably get around 5 1TB drives from work (pulled from new PCs, replaced with SSDs), which I intended to use in RAID 5 for the FS. I just ordered a 6600k, so I can use the FX8350 currently in my system, which will give me an entire extra PC in parts. Here's what I have to work with: Full system, in parts (including case), extra AM3+ mobo (ASUS M5A97 R2.0) Dell Precision T1600 (running ProxMox for VMs right now) 5x 1TB drives (new) Regardless, I'd have to buy hardware to make it work. I'm thinking I should buy an AM3 CPU from ebay and a $50 case (extra board is ATX, T1600 is mATX) and use the rest of the hardware from the T1600. My other option would be to buy a RAID card, but I don't know much about them and what's good / reliable (would I need a 6 port card, or could I use onboard ports alongside the RAID card?). Plus, I believe an average one would cost a fair bit (or am I wrong?). Now for the software side of things... I'm thinking FreeNAS with ZFS (I'd have enough RAM). As for the VMs, I'm thinking ProxMox again. I also wanted to run a Plex server on the VM PC, could I use the file server as the storage for it? Or does it have to be local to the Plex app? Also, what would be the recommended OS to run Plex on? I'd assume Linux, but I don't know very much about the different distributions, as well I have very little experience with it in general. I would use Windows, but that uses a lot more resources, and I don't want any issues when watching something. I'm a noob when it comes to things like these, so sorry for the stupid questions. Any and all help on this is greatly appreciated! If you want any more information, just let me know. Thanks, Michael
  16. So here goes... The plan: Build a server that can be my Plex Media Server, Minecraft Media Server, and Personal Cloud Server (BitTorrent Sync or OwnCloud setup) Keep Cost effective Separate the services running (Plex, Minecraft, Cloud, etc.) VM's with shared CPU... (Thoughts?) Parts: Motherboard - Dell PowerEdge R410 RAM - Samsung (2) 8GB DDR3 ECC 1333MHz - Total 16 GB (Considering 32 GB, what do you think?) CPU(s) - (2) Xeon 5640 Quad-Core 2.66 GHz Drives - I have several TB laying around in externals that I will put in the build to make internal. Power Supply - So this one I really need some help on. I have read some threads that suggest the normal ATX won't work... then I read other threads people suggesting just a normal ATX... I believe there might be a pin that is in the wrong place on the 24 pin connector... I have tried to research it but need some real help here guys. I could really use some input on this one guys. I am not planning on putting a GPU in... this things does have built in graphics... which should be able to run Ubuntu interface I am hoping... sorry about the over use of ellipses. I can't help me self! At least I am not capitalizing words of emphasis like I want to...
  17. What would you guys recommend to use to create a set of virtual machines. I have a old computer to use but not sure if i should use Windows Virtual Machine Server but require a licence to do this. Any recommendations for software to use?
  18. so I have a server, with 2 CPUs, 16 total cores, running off an SSD, with windows server 2012. I can't install drivers to use my 390x while my gaming PC's motherboard is out for RMA. I have an Idea I think could work, but im not sure what tools I could use to accomplish it. Would I be able to take say 8 cores, and my boot SSD with windows 10 from my gaming PC, and run a VM using that boot drive and use my 390X? I could then have 8 cores running and maintain my servers I run, but then I could use the VM along with my windows 10 SSD and 390x with proper drivers to play games. I know Linus did something like this, although im looking for a free option as this would only be for 2-3 weeks.
  19. I was able to get a free year subscription to VMware Workstation 8 through my college. What I liked about it was the Autostart vm feature, which I use to control my freeNAS box to automatically boot when ever I turn on my computer. Is there any other type 2 hypervisor that has an autostart feature? I was looking at virtualbox since it was free but have not seen anything that suggest that there is an autostart feature for VMs. Ideally would like to stick with a type 2 hypervisor however if you are convincing as to why I should switch to a type 1 hypervisor, I might change my mind.
  20. When I try to connect to my newly configured (read: poorly configured) samba server, I get the error NT_STATUS_NO_LOGON_SERVERS. Here's my smb.conf file: [global] netbios name = PIKACHU workgroup = NOT_A_WORKGROUP security = domain encrypt passwords = yes smb passwd file = /etc/samba/smbpasswd [fs1] comment = Master file share of zpool path = /pool writeable = yes create mask = 0770 force create mode = 0770 locking = yes browseable = no valid users = zee I'm not sure what other information I can give to help, but the server is running Linux Mint 15, the client that I'm trying to connect with is also running Mint 15, the client is a virtual machine, the host is running windows 7, and I'm able to connect to this samba share via the host.
  21. Hello everyone! I'm new here so if this topic isn't correct or annything I'm sorry! So my problem: I'm a student system ICT in Belgium. I have a course with a lot of virtualization involved. I can run 2 windows machines on my laptop with no problem. But when I want to run an extra linux machine or a windows or whatever it al freezes because my ram is full. Now the question: I have an Asus k555 laptop, he has a total of 8GB of ram, i would like to add more but the problem is there is only one removable ram stick. It looks like the other 4GB is soldered directly on the motherboard. Can i just replace the 4GB stick with a 8GB or 16GB stick or is this going to create problems with the ram already on the board?
  22. So I'm looking for a bit of buying/setup advise, Currently I have an old desktop that's just running some crap on it such as plex, IP cams, ftp server, nas, backup server etc the usual really. This desktop is getting old and clunky and I've always liked the idea of VMs. I have a little experience with Hyper V and kind of know my way around it so I'd like to setup a tower server at home and create a small VM for each of those uses I listed earlier. Now this isn't meant to be some top wack thing I literally want something to tinker with and that is going to function better than a 10 year old desktop machine. I'd like to just put a couple of hard drives and an SSD into a tower server and run some VMs on Hyper-v in Windows server 2012 I've been looking at some refurbished items online (like I said it's just for a bit of tinkering so I'm not going to buying brand new unless there's an amazing deal) and I've come across this and other similar machines: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Dell-PowerEdge-T710-2x-E5620-48GB-PercH700-256-2x-1100WPS-16SFF-DVD-Tower-Server-/282277265531?hash=item41b909407b:g:YDEAAOSwo4pYQVOj Would something like this do the trick for what I want to do or it is overkill/underpowered? I appreciate any advise
  23. I'm looking for a software based solution, to control several virtual machines at one time using a single mouse and keyboard. Example: If I was on Google and clicked the search bar, all of my virtual machines would click the search bar at the same time; and then when I type something, they would all type. I've looked around but found nothing, I can't think why this wouldn't exist?
  24. Hi, I was wondering if it was possible to essentially treat the VM as a "real machine" and wipe the previous OS and install a new one. My usage case for this is that i wish to upgrade server 2012 r2 to Server 2016 but want to keep the VM in question live throughout. Can you guys help me ?
  25. First off, let me apologize if this isn't the right area. I figured Tech Support cause that's technically what I need. Hey guys, I have a project here at work to try to figure out how to create a thin client environment using one of our HP Workstations, and HP Thin Clients. The workstation specs are coming soon, along with the thin client. My question is this: Would I be able to create an image on the workstation, have the thin client PXE boot to the workstation, use the image, but none of the workstation's resources minus the storage? My thought process is kinda like having a RAM Disk in that every time the thin client is shut off, the image is refreshed on their end, but never truly touched on the workstation side. Sorry for the lack of specs, this was just handed to me as an experiment, and I want to see if my idea is plausible. Thanks!
