So maybe this is because of me messing around too much as a power user or something to do with Windows 11. I have these coloured accent bars on the top of my taskbar and around .EXE programs only. I do like to debloat the system a little bit but that mostly is clicking uninstall and A LITTLE BIT OF POWERSHELL. I used to be very serious about it but now I'm more relaxed with it. In my time of debloating I've never seen something like this, this didn't happen in Windows 10.

I just used a few streaming services for the first time in a long long time on my pc and realized that some aren't pushing 1080p to chrome (namely netflix and prime video). Now i'm wondering if I should use the Windows 10 apps instead. I wanted to get an opinion on what people mostly use for their own set ups.

I am working on the beginnings of my first UWP app, and am a little confused. One of the key benefits to UWP apps is supposed to be their automatic scalability, and developers are encouraged to set the sizes of UI elements in multiples of four (for easier scaling across platforms). I am using a Raspberry Pi 3 (running Win10 IoT Core), and using a screen with an 800x480 resolution. In VS2019, I get an xaml preview for my UI that shows me what it would look like on certain device presets. The closest preview preset to my screen is one that's 1024*768. Here is my code to create sections in the UI and set their colors (so I can see the "zones" I have created): <Grid> <Grid.RowDefinitions> <RowDefinition/> <RowDefinition Height="704"/> </Grid.RowDefinitions> <Grid.ColumnDefinitions> <ColumnDefinition Width="128"/> <ColumnDefinition/> </Grid.ColumnDefinitions> <Rectangle Fill="Coral" Width="128"/> <Rectangle Fill="Gray" Grid.Column="1" Grid.Row="0"/> <Rectangle Fill="Red" Grid.Row="1"/> <Grid Grid.Column="2" Grid.Row="1"> </Grid> </Grid> This is what I would like the UI to look like across all platforms. Vs. What actually displays on my prototype screen: The final system will have a different display than the one I am using to test, so the row and column values must scale with the display parameters. Here is the specific part related to establishing Row/column length/height: <Grid.RowDefinitions> <RowDefinition/> <RowDefinition Height="704"/> </Grid.RowDefinitions> <Grid.ColumnDefinitions> <ColumnDefinition Width="128"/> <ColumnDefinition/> </Grid.ColumnDefinitions> I have found that within Xaml and C# I could do SystemParameters.FullPrimaryScreenHeight and it would return me the height of the display/window, meaning I could use the formula SystemParameters.FullPrimaryScreenHeight-(SystemParameters.FullPrimaryScreenHeight/12)=Properly scaled vertical resolution to find my needed height for the row. Unfortunately, I cannot do arithmetic operations using Xaml alone. I know that there is some way to use Xaml in conjunction with C#, but this is my first time developing based on Microsoft's UWP. I'm sure that the combination of Xaml and C# is a fairly common practice, like HTML and CSS or HTML and JS, but I am just unsure how to do it. Sorry for the word-vomit, but I couldn't think of a simple way to explain this.

So, I know a bit of c# + XAML (created simple uwp apps) and c++ console applications. I just want to practice in something, learn something new. I'm looking to .net. Any recommendations where to start?

Hey everyone. Decided to dig out this old account and buy a float-plane subscription (mind the horrible username). After buying my subscription, I noticed that watching videos in a forum is less then ideal so I decided to throw together a quick UWP app to see if it works. Currently it requires you to login through a webview, then click a button to do some web scraping to grab all the videos. It's messy, but somewhat works lol. Was interested in seeing if anyone would like a UWP floatplane app (more refined and pretty) for PC, Xbox (and phone - if Windows Phone users still exist here). Not sure if I'm allowed to post in the Apps and Windows sections - although it would make more sense. Github over here: https://github.com/DominicMaas/FloatPlane -Dominic

Hello Everyone, I keep getting an error message whenever I try to use Freestyle on a UWP game. I tried Rise of the Tomb Raider, Minecraft and Shadow of War, all downloaded through xbox gamepass. I tested it on borderlands 2 and CS:GO and it worked. Both games were bought on steam. Overwatch also failed, saying the game was not supported (which it is). Is this a known issue, Freestyle not working with UWP games, or is it a problem on my end? I'm playing a lot of games through GamePass right now and really wanted to use this feature. Please share your knowledge with me. Cheers

Hey there y'all. I've been looking around for some informations on how the built-in UWP apps in Windows 10 behave when you pin them to the Start Menu and was wondering if anyone might come across somewhere that may have this information. In particular, I was wondering where to find information on 1. What fucntionality or sections of an app can be "pinned" to the start menu as a tile (other than the obvious, the app itself) eg. In the Mail app, you can pin individual accounts, or any folder within an account as an individual tile for quick access In the calendar app, you can only pin the whole app as a tile. 2. What apps will give a Live Tile/information response (and possibly under what circumstance) when pinned to Start Menu eg. Mail will show you when new mail arrives plus a snippet of their content. Alarm & Clock will show current time at a destination if you pin it from the Clock funtion in the app. Calculator will show you it's icon but no Live Tile I'm trying to re-interpret the use of the start menu, so I'm hoping to find functionality in the apps. Unfortunately the documentation for them in general, is abysmal, if it even exists. Other than trial and error, I have generally not been able to find much informaton, I was wondering if anyone would know where to look for a more comprehensive guide. Any help would be appreciated. Cheerios.

Hello!? I noticed that Microsoft provides two different versions of Skype, Skype classic (standalone installer) and Skype for Windows 10 (UWP). I just want to know that is there any difference between two versions? if so, what version would you recommend to use? Thanks in advance

The windows store stays as a pre installed app in windows 8 and above. But who actually need that thing? I didn't find it any useful. And everyone who knows somewhat about tech or software always says not to go to the windows store. Now the thing is that the windows store is made by Microsoft, so it should not be any junk. So I tried to get some benefit from it but i could not find anything useful. Some of the things that i might need already have some better .exe apps. Moreover almost all the apps I tried from it continuously crashed, some won't open and some just got hangs. I also have heard from many people to encounter similar problems. Even after so many problems, uselessness and people complaining about it and discouraging to use it, why does it exist? And why does Microsoft still invest and spend on the windows store? Can I have some right answers? And even if it is not that bad, how are you people using it? And how good or bad is it to you?

I'm writing a DB management app in c# using uwp and mvvm-light and I can't display a default selectedValue in my combobox without opening it and manually selecting one first. Here is my view : <ComboBox x:Name="editCategory" Header="Category" ItemsSource="{Binding Categories}" SelectedValue="{Binding CategoryCode, Mode=TwoWay}" SelectedValuePath="Code" DisplayMemberPath="Name"/> Here's my ViewModel : private ObservableCollection<Category> _categories; public ObservableCollection<Category> Categories { get { return _categories; } set { if (_categories == value) return; _categories = value; RaisePropertyChanged("Categories"); } } private int _categoryCode; public int CategoryCode { get { return _categoryCode; } set { if (_categoryCode == value) return; _categoryCode = value; RaisePropertyChanged("CategoryCode"); } } And my model : class Category { public int Code { get; set; } [Required] public string Name { get; set; } } I can display the different values when opening the combobox, when I select a value, it displays it correctly when the combobox is closed. I know the binding is working because if I set a breakpoint in the setter of CategoryCode in my ViewModel, it shows the correct updated value. The problem is that when I load the page, the default value is not selected when it should display the Category.Name of the item where Category.Code = CategoryCode Please help me if you can, I've been searching for hours, and nothing I could find has helped me so far Link to my StackOverflow question

source: https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/directx/2016/05/10/unlocked-frame-rate-and-more-now-enabled-for-uwp/ they're are finally listening, but still .. it gets down to the game's developer if they want to unlock the framerate also, both G-Sync and FreeSync monitor owners should rejoice the biggest gripe still on the table is multi GPU support - something that's still absent in game developer portfolio, quite few supporting CFX or SLI out of the box; not even mentioning the support for explicit multi GPU setups and still no explicit full screen mode support, as developers have to implement workarounds to use it in their UWP games --- there is still one little caveat for some laptop owners with integrated graphics and a discrete GPU - unlocked framerate feature is not supported on these systems, MS still working on it --- update May 12: http://www.tweaktown.com/news/52089/gears-war-ultimate-edition-now-lets-uncap-framerate/index.html Gears of War: Ultimate Edition's developer, The Coalition, has issued a patch that gives the option to unlock the framerate

This morning, Quantum Break developer Remedy posted a status update on Quantum Break, outlining what will be fixed and what won't. I've typed a summary of important issues below. General Performance Issues & Stuttering - This will be fixed in an update "coming in the near future". Most likely within a week or two. V-sync, G-sync, and Freesync - Microsoft will be enabling UWP support for Variable Refresh Rate Technology "in May". The update will likely be in 3 to 6 weeks. Graphics settings - Many users complained about the mandatory film grain, and now Remedy has confirmed they are adding more graphical options in "a future update". Render Technique - For those who don't know, Quantum Break uses a non-native render resolution. Simply put, This will remain the only option for rendering, much to the disappointment of the many players hoping for the ability to render in their PC's native resolution. Non-native render resolution results in the game appearing hazy and unrealistic. Below is an example image demonstrating this issue. Multi GPU Support - Remedy has announced that there will be no Multi-GPU support, stating that due to the engine architecture described above, "the work needed to support multiple GPUs would have been significant and out of scope for Remedy for Quantum Break." Opinion - This is just another example of a developer, Remedy, being held back by their choice to develop for the Universal Windows Platform (UWP). I doubt that after this news, coupled with the game's poor launch, this game will do well on PC. What Microsoft is trying to do with UWP and the Windows Store is holding back developers without giving them any benefits. Unless Microsoft makes major changes to UWP, it will remain restrictive and unadvantageous, and will fail. It looks to me like the UWP is just Games for Windows Live all over again. source: http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/mar/04/microsoft-monopolise-pc-games-development-epic-games-gears-of-war via: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2016-03-04-epic-boss-accuses-microsoft-of-trying-to-monopolise-game-development-on-pc just this week I posted an article that sheds some light on this whole mess that is Windows 10, DirectX12 and Universal Windows Platform here's what going on in yesterday's podcast (TechTalk #104) with JayZTwoCents, Barnacules (a former MS employee, now a independe SW developer) had some not so nice things to say about MS and their Universal Windows Platform ^ jump to 52min the rundown is this while a universal platform sounds good, for the PC gaming is rather (very) bad since it puts restrictions on the development and directly hinders the natural capabilities of DX12 apps trough MS' Store will run in borderless window, with V-Sync always on and capped at 60FPS on top of that, UWP introduces a lot of overhead, and reducing overhead that was the main reason why DX12 exists he also speaks of the possibility that MS one day could just remove the Win32 environment and will leave you (the consumer) with just UWP apps - just like Metro on W8 MircroSoft is a monopoly, and so, they can force whatever they envision onto their customers if HW manufactures, specifically AMD and nVidia, and game developers, do not come forward ,,, well, PC gaming as we know it, will be no more - every PC running Windows OS will be just another X-Box GabeN, praise his name, saw this with W8 launch - the result of that, STEAM OS the bad part .. STEAM OS is a pile of stinking shite I hope Vulkan and Linux game development takes a huge leap ahead, otherwise ..... rest in pieces --- update: MS replies to Sweeney's accusations via Kevin Gallo (corporate vice president of Windows at Microsoft) : ----
