  1. Hi, I've been watching a bunch of vids on youtube and have been reading on Plex's website, but im still a bit uncertain about what would be the right setup. Use: 1 user 1/4k direct play to a TV connected to my computer (When I buy a new TV would could I connect the Plex server directly to the TV through ethernet?) Some direct stream to smartphone / tablet (dont think I will be streaming much outside of my home network) Im looking for a CPU and motherboard. Is the GPU good enough for hardware transcoding? I would be great to be able to use my 8T external HDD since all the media is on that drive already. Im not sure about OS, I would like to learn Linux but I know almost nothing about it, never tested it out yet. If this server could be used for Plex, NAS & back up that would be awesome! I will list several of the options I have to buy used CPUs (9-49 USD) at the bottom. Hardware I already had: HDD: WD 200 + 250 GB older SATA HDDs I have laying around. I have a 1 TB WD I havent gotten to work yet for some reason.. External HDD: 8TB Seagate I use for media and backups with my laptop today. Cabels and 4x120mm + 5x80mm fans etc Water cooling radiators 120+360mm, CPU block, pump (Need to buy tubing and thermal paste) Hardware I bought used: PSU: 450W Lenovo AcBel 80 Plus Bronze ($29 no shipping) SSD: Samsung 128 GB 2,5" SSD (CM871 Series, MZ-YLF1280, TLC SATA 6Gbps) ($27 inkluded shipping) CPU: Intel® Core™ i7-2600K Processor (8M Cache, up to 3.80 GHz) https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/52214/intel-core-i7-2600k-processor-8m-cache-up-to-3-80-ghz.html RAM: 16 GB DDR3, 1333 Motherboard: Acer ipisb-vr rev 1.01 http://www.findlaptopdriver.com/acer-ipisb-vr-rev-1-01/ Hardware I got for free (when helping upgrading a gaming PC) PC case GPU: EVGA GeForece GTX 1060, 3GB GDDR5 SC GAMING, ACX 2.0, Single Fan, DX12 OSD Support (PXOC), 03G-P4-6162-KR Kingston 2x4 GB KVR24N17S8K2/8 DDR4 8GB (4GB 1Rx8 512M x 64-Bit x 2 pcs.) 2. Alright so I have been wanting to build a PC for a freaken while now and had finally decided to pull the trigger. Over the past month I've acquired various parts. CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600X 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor (Purchased For $80.00) micro center Motherboard: Gigabyte B450M DS3H Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard (Purchased For $60.00) micro center Memory: ADATA XPG SPECTRIX D41 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3000 Memory (Purchased For $77.77) Newegg Storage: Inland 240 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive (Purchased For $32.00) micro center Storage: Seagate Barracuda Compute 2 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive (Purchased For $50.00) amazon Video Card: PowerColor Radeon RX VEGA 56 8 GB Video Card (Purchased For $170.00) Facebook market Case: NZXT H510 ATX Mid Tower Case (Purchased For $50.00) Facebook Market Power Supply: GAMDIAS ASTRAPE P1 G 750 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply (Purchased For $50.00) EBAY So I finally got all my parts and put them in my case. I plugged in the front panel as the last thing and hit the power button and my PSU made a loud buzzing noise for like half a second and then pretty much blew up. A small spark flew out and slight smell of burning. Two questions 1. was this my fault? Later I contacted the seller from Ebay and he said that he was unable to test this unit before it was sent, but initially when I plugged everything in the ram did light up. 2. ARE ANY OF MY OTHER COMPONENTS BROKE BECAUSE OF THIS please, if you have had this experience let me know what parts broke or didn't as a result. I will be getting the same model PSU tomorrow (3-12-20) and installing it, but how do I know if it fried my MB, CPU, GPU, SSD, HDD, or RAM?
  3. Hi! For Christmas, I thought I could offer my dad a small PC (no need to be a high-end gaming PC) for him to plug on the TV and play X-Plane 10, and maybe later X-Plane 11 and Microsoft Flight Sim 2020. For now, I managed to take my old rig (The first PC I have ever bought and manage to game on it for 65$ total) Which is a Core 2 Quad Q9400, 6GB of DDR2 RAM and a GT710. I will also add a 1TB hard drive in it. For this, I will need a new case, since the old one doesn't even had any drive bays beside for the optical drive, and a new power supply since the old one is a SFX form factor. The computer will run on a 1080p 46" TV through HDMI. The case will likely be a Deepcool Matrexx 30 (39.99$ on Newegg + 10$ Shipping) or anything you can think is better. I don't have any idea for a power supply, so any suggestion below 50$ (CAN) would be welcomed! Also, if there is a better CPU that can fit the motherboard (LGA 775, DDR2 Memory) and a better GPU for 75$ or less in total on Ebay, it could be also great. Thanks!
  4. Hey LTT community, I'm a university student studying Computer Science at the University of Toronto. Much like the LTT team, I have been a long time advocate of the 2nd hand electronics market and frequent communities such as /r/hardwareswap and heatware - both to save money, but also to reduce the amount of electronic waste that is produced nowdays. The biggest issue I have with the second hand market right now is that its pretty difficult for those with less tech knowledge to enter the market. They don't know where to focus their budget, what "the numbers" mean, etc. and as a result most people just end up buying cheaper electronics new; less value for them, but also more electronic waste. As a result, prices for most devices on sites such as Ebay or Facebook marketplace are often higher than they should be, leading to the used electronics market being quite... dead. I'm starting up a side project which will help those with less technological know-how so that the general public can better price their used devices, as well as have a good idea how much they should be paying for other people's old devices on websites such as ebay or kijiji. That being said, its not a simple process - a lot of things have to be considered when pricing old electronics, such as the original manufacturer (@Microsoft and Apple tax), specs, new tech dropping the value of existing devices (think Ryzen launch) etc. For obvious reasons, I'd like this to be as accurate as possible. With this in mind, what do you consider when buying and selling your old devices? Thanks in advance!
  5. Hi I recently got a capture card and I want to have a separate streaming pc so I can everything, like my Xbox, switches, and pc. would be possible to make a cheap streaming pc with an old lga 1155 Xeon or an i3 2120. i would like to stream at 1080p 60FPS, if this does not work, please give me some suggestions.
  6. Hi im currently using a fx 8350 processor and a 990fxa ud3 board with some ddr3 memory. im looking to upgrade to a ryzen 1600 but want to do so for under 300, would like to do so for $250.00 USD but between upgrading cpu, MB and ram its hard to do with new parts. im not sure if i can use my ddr3 ram with ryzen 1600 for now and upgrade later.
  7. Looking for a USED graphics card under $100 USD the replace my aging EVGA GTX 550 Ti 2GB. AMD or Nvidia are accepted, but must be supported, easily overclockable and have support for newer titles . The games I play are GTA V, Gmod, and American/Euro Trucking Simulator. I like Open world, indie, and simulators games. Not into FPS or any competitive gaming. My specs include: AMD FX-6120 500W PSU
  8. Hello, so I was wondering what GPU should I pair with my Ryzen 1700. I've seen a lot of offers on used GTX 970s and some 1060s. I've also seen some R9 390 8GB for the exact same price as 970 or sometimes cheaper and I was wondering if 390 is worth it(mainly because of 8gb of GDDR instead of 6gb or 4gb). So, my question is, is it worth it to go with used card? Or should I wait for 10xx series prices to drop down and buy a new one? Thanks in advance
  9. Hey, so I myself would avoid getting used parts but my friend is buying a 500 Euro PC before Christmas that he plans to game on. Considering his tiny budget, we were wondering if it's worth buying any parts used and if so, which ones? I have a case, a hdd and psu and a xfx 6850 black edition from my old rig I could sell him but the real question is would he be better off buying better parts used/new or use the ones I have and buy what he is missing? Thanks
  10. Hey everyone! I was just wondering how likely/possible it would be for me to build a small pc for $500, that's capable of playing games on the lowest graphical settings? Not super graphics intensive on es, either. Games like Age of empires 2 HD, other strategy games, etc. Willing to go for secondhand parts, and definitely for the monitor. Thoughts?
  11. So i recently purchased an I5-2500k and an asus p8p67 rev 3 motherboard from a friend for 75$, but i have had nothing but issues since buying. I am running at abnormal temperatures, and have nooo idea why, I have reseated the heatsink 4 times, 3 with artic silver, one with lepa thermal paste. the lepa did fairly well at first but after a week of not useing the pc, i booted the pc up and was running mid 60c-80c.... the lowest i had the cpu running at idle is around 42, but that doesnt last long. So after some minor research, and useing task manager/open hardware monitor, i have realized this cpu is running at 1.36? volts.and is clocking in at 4.3.... this processor is only rated at 3.3-3.7 turbo. so my new issue is, what are the stock specs i need to input to bring this thing back to stock, because i have noooo idea. Before yall ask, room stays around 80ish degrees F. house is set to 78 but my main pc and my devices boost the temp up a bit. Im hopeing my stock cooler is still sufficent to bring this back to stock, all i built this pc for was to run overwatch on like low/med, maybe some gta on med, and mostly just use it as a youtube and twitch stream machine (just an entertainment pc, since xbox is gonna stop supporting the 360 soon) The Picture is my latest application of paste useing the smear pattern with a small xtra blob in the middle to oooze out (bout the size of a BB) and it is brand new atric silver 5. Also, if i have to redo the thermal again........ how much paste does intel like? my main pc is running a fx 8350 with a 240mm lepa AIO (where the lepa paste came from) and i have had noooo issues with that, i run max like 40 degrees. I5 2500k asus p8p67 = $75 msi r9 270x 2gb = $100 Cooler master 430 elite = laying around 8gb Crucibal Balistics = $28 240 gb adata SSD = $57 Corsair CX500M = $35 a beat of a machine for the price, if i can get running.... Thanks yall for looking, hopefully yall have some good info for me. ~Thanks~ ~Heavy~
  12. Looking to get some help for spec'ing out a workstation for some adobe work and maybe a little gaming. I don't play games of this gen. the newest I play on PC is rFactor. I'm just looking to keep it cheap, simple, and easy to afford being 16.
  13. Planning a build, and i was wondering what the danger, if any of buying used graphics cards and cpus. They would be coming from the used section of amazon, but I still had some concerns regarding their performance. Have any of you guys had any experience buying and running used parts? Any tips?
  14. The parts list goes as follows: CPU Intel Core i7-3770 (3.4 GHz) Motherboard Asus P8B75M-LXPlus (LGA 1155, mATX, B75) RAM16GB G-Skill Ripjaws X (DDR3 1600 MHz) GPU Asus GTX 760 3GB OC'ed to 1014 MHz Case NZXT Source 210 Windowed Storage Samsung 840 EVO 250GB, Some 1TB 7200 RPM Drive (either WD or Seagate). PSU Corsair CX500 (500 watts) Cooling Raijintek Triton 140-blue (the new model, not the one that leaks everywhere) As you can see, the parts list is all over the board, and this build really doesn't make much sense. Much of this is due to upgrades that I made later down the line (For example, I received the water cooler as a Christmas gift). Since these parts don't really make sense together, I figured it would be hard to sell as a whole package. I have a few questions about this subject, however: (repeat) What is a rough estimate of how much I could expect to get for these parts? Do you think it would be better to part the system out and sell each component individually? Is it even worth selling the whole system and starting fresh, or should I just upgrade? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  15. I'm going to be upgrading my platform soon and I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to sell my CPU, motherboard and ram as one unit so someone could save on shipping. Would it be wiser for me to sell the parts individually if I want the most back for them or do you guys think selling the whole platform at once would be attractive due to the savings on shipping and all that? Just looking for some thoughts on this. It's a Asus maximum hero VII, a 4790k and 16gb of corsair vengeance 2400mhz DDR3 ram.
  16. I'm spending around $1,200 in all for everything and wanted to know if this is a good build for 1440p gaming at 60 FPS: Dell Optiplex 9020 FFF ($550) i7 4790 16 GB of DDR3 RAM 2x 500GB HDDs Windows 7 Pro I'm planning on getting a used GTX 980Ti for around $300. I'm also going to get a new ASUS PB277Q monitor which is around $300. I'm planning on putting a $50 HyperX 120GB SSD in it as a boot drive and I have an old Seagate 2TB SSHD that I'm going to use for game storage. I think the PC comes with a free Windows 10 Pro update. Do you guys think I can do better with a custom build or is this good. Are the prices good?
  17. Hey there. I've been trying my hardest to game on a mid-grade laptop for three years now with about as much success as you'd expect. After a good two weeks of binge-watching LTT and Craft Computing (particularly Linus' Scrapyard Wars and CC's budget gaming PC video) I've learned that supposedly I can build myself a serviceable gaming rig for $200-300 USD by buying used components and an old office PC. I haven't bought anything yet but I'm currently doing research to make sure I can actually pull this off. Fortunately for me, one of the Goodwill stores in my area has a "Goodwill Computer Works" next door. It's basically just a room full of old office PCs and ancient accessories, but their prices on the office PCs seemingly blow Newegg out of the water, and they include a monitor, mouse, and keyboard with all PC purchases. Most of their full systems are actually outside of my budget (their systems on display are $200-350 alone, which wouldn't leave me with enough for an add-in GPU) but I found a stack of towers in a corner that were very reasonably priced. The main two I'm interested in are: Dell Optiplex, Intel i5-3470, 250 GB HDD (RPM unknown), 4 GB RAM (generation unspecified), Windows 10. $69.99 USD HP Pro series, Intel i7-4590, 8 GB RAM (generation unspecified). No hard drive and therefore no OS. $99.99 USD Obviously, the HP is by far the more attractive option. A $30 upcharge for a Haswell i7 and another 4 GB of RAM? Yes please. The only problem is, since it doesn't have a hard drive or OS, I'd need to buy one elsewhere, and the cost to buy a drive and a copy of Windows 10 would be well above the $30 savings and cut into my GPU budget. So, is there a better way for me to get a drive and copy of Windows for a currently driveless PC? Or should I just go the budget route and buy the Dell? TL;DR I'm building a budget "starter" gaming rig out of a thrift store PC. I found a well-specced HP tower for $99 but it has no hard drive or OS. The same shop is selling a Dell tower with worse specs but a hard drive and Windows 10 for $69 Should/can I: Buy the HP tower, then get a used hard drive from Craigslist/eBay/Newegg, and a fresh copy of Windows? Buy the HP tower, and the Dell tower, and move the hard drive from the Dell to the HP, giving the HP the Dell's copy of Windows and giving me an emergency spare parts PC? Just buy the Dell tower and use the savings on more RAM and a GPU, as even the best GPU I'm likely to get (GTX 1050 low profile) won't be bottlenecked by an i5?
  18. So as the title says, i kinda need help on what i should ask ish, Im from belgium as well and im the first owner of all the parts. 19. Hello everyone. Short intro: My name is Sauce, Asian roots living in Belgium. Born in 1988 and working as an IT consultant in the financial sector. I've long been wanting to build an secondary PC, to bring with me to LAN parties. Although I only visit 1 LAN party per year, the appeal of having a very compact PC is something that I've always wanted to have. Because the nature of LAN parties, I don't like the idea to bring my high end gaming rig with me. Therefore, I've decided to build a cheap gaming LAN PC. My parts: 20 EUR - Coolermaster Elite 130 + free 4 USB 2.0 5"25 Hub Sharkoon 40 EUR - I5-2400 (non K) with stock cooler 50 EUR - Intel DQ67P (m-ITX) + I/O shield 35 EUR - Corsair 4GB x2 1600 (total of 8GB) 100 EUR - Sapphire R9 280x 40 EUR - OCZ 600w Powersupply 10 EUR - 128 GB SSD Micron 5 EUR - 500GB 7200 Hitachi HDD Total money spend: 300EUR Click on spoiler to see picture part list. Honestly, I've never thought that I would be able to make a decent gaming PC rig for this price. The CPU will become a bottleneck at some point, but I've always been playing games on LAN parties that do not require any high end components. Again, this system was build to be just bring around at LAN parties. The games I would most likely play on LAN parties are: Hearthstone World of Warcraft Heroes of the Storm Overwatch Counter Strike Global Offensive FIFA series Rocket League Orc Must Die series Any other game like GTA 5 for example, I would be rather playing on my main system (i7 6700k, GTX 980ti). Unlike in the theme of Scrapyard Wars, I did not had any additional peripherals laying around for my secondary machine. Therefore, I had to buy them as well. I ended up with: 15 EUR - Logitech G15v2 5 EUR - Logitech MX310 + free mouse mat 100 EUR - 25" UltraWide LG25U65 (2560x1080) 20 EUR - 7.1 Corsair 2100 Headset with broken mic 10 EUR - Plantronic Desk Mic (new) Overall, I'm very happy with the parts I was able to get for the price I've spend on the used parts. I don't have any benchmark numbers or anything for new, but they will be available once I've spend my weekend at the LAN party (Sugarlan in Belgium). Click here to view pictures of the finished build. Thank you for reading my small build log. If any questions, please do not hesitate to ask them. Kind Regards, Sauze
  20. I'm having a dilemma with a bunch of ideas for a build using parts lying around the house after upgrading my main rig. I've ran through 3 build scenarios, though my current X99 board had a 00 error and am not 100% sure whether the motherboard or CPU is fried. I'm basing this on assuming the board needs RMA'd and fixed. They are going for around $250 used on Ebay right now. However, selling these and buying some new core components seems like a good idea. The 2200G build I have is the most enticing financially, but I'm concerned it will be a giant bottleneck with a dedicated GPU pairing like a GTX 1070. I also understand that Computex 2019 is soon, and there could be some stellar new APU's and CPU's coming out for a great price, but I'm basing all this on what is available now. I'm curious to get feedback if any of these builds or paths make sense. I'm trying to do it on the cheap, but not corner myself with no upgrade path or bad bottlenecks. 21. Hey guys. A while ago, I had some problems with a computer of mine where the PSU failed and took the graphics card I had installed at that moment (a Sapphire HD6670) and I need a GPU to replace it because I don't have another spare one. So, as the title lightly suggests, I have a friend willing to sell me her GTX 660 (from Gigabyte). The thing is, we have no idea what the value of said card is. Is there any website where I can check out that value or is there anyone experienced on this kind of stuff who knows an average price for it? Thanks in advance, everyone!
  22. So I've been a PC enthusiast for a few years and I know a good amount already, but I'm new to water cooling in that I've never personally done it. I'm planning on getting a good deal on a lot of used parts soon that includes two bottles of ancient water cooling fluid- Feser One, in pastel green and purple. Having little experience or knowledge of premixed fluids, are these useful for anything anymore? I know antifreeze for vehicles has a very long shelf life (decade+) but that's not really apples to apples (as Linus discovered back in whole room watercooling ). The rig & loop I'd be using it in is not especially valuable so I'm willing to take risks if you think it's okay, just want to know beforehand if anyone knows for sure the stuff is useless. Also- if using a premix like this, would I still need a kill coil or other additives? I know premixed fluids are supposed to have biocide and anti-corrosives in them already but would the same hold true for this old stuff? Thanks for the help.
  23. local morning yall. im browsing ebay for parts for a server build. i came across this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/ASUS-P9X79-Motherboard-X79-LGA2011-Intel-Quad-Core-i7-3820-3-6Ghz-processor/332558527793?hash=item4d6e086d31:g:su8AAOSwNmNaiGE9 i plan to us a Intel Xeon E5-2640 V2, for this project, so the CPU included with this listing means nothing to me, that said, is there a potential profit to be had from flipping the i7 3820? ive been having a hell of a time finding mobo that are x79 with an LGA 2011 on them anywhere near me, so this is one of the better bets ive found so far.
  24. Hey, I have been planning to upgrade the 6gb ram in my Dell Laptop N w/ i5 to its max of 8gb @ a higher speed of course. As you know currently ram is at an astronomically high price (used @ $15 ea and new @ $43ea). Would it be a good idea to buy used ram instead or wait for it to drop to something much lower (like I was hoping)? What are the risks when buying used? Also, are there any reliable programs out there that can tell me exactly what ram will work with my computer and the best I can get? Link to the part I thought would work: https://goo.gl/CTPaah
  25. Hi, Where would be the best place to look for a used GTX 1070 (Preferably an EVGA FTW)? Thanks
