  1. Question for anyone willing to answer it. My brother recently transitioned to Apple products for all of his video editing needs (gross I know). Anyway, he has let me snag his PC since I have been wanted to re-acquire one since I sold mine a year ago. I actually built this computer for him, but since he purchased the parts I want to give him a fair deal. So with of the parts listed below, what would be your estimated fair value? CPU: Intel i7 7700 CPU Cooler: Hyper 212 EVO GPU: MSI GTX 1060 6 GB RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB DDR4 2400MHz Motherboard: MSI Gaming M5 SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 250 GB HD: Western Digital Black 1 TB PSU: EVGA NEX650W 80+ Gold Case: NZXT H440
  2. I am trying to help put some parts together that my mother can use for daily use. She plans on using it for spreadsheets, docs, movies, and just everyday use. The PSU will be used from an older build of mine but has been kept in shape. Let me know what you guys think. The CPU may be a tad overkill. I want this build to last her as long as possible. 3. So i found an old system that i got gifted by a friend, its an HP Compaq CQ2100NL from 2010 and it has: 1 gb ram 1 core on 1.6 ghz 2 wifi antennas 250 gb hdd passive cooled cpu with 1 case fan and 4 usb poort with an vga onboard output This is the last and weakest pc that i got that i need a use for. I tought about an outside temperture meter but than the pc may die fast, also though about nas but i just got a new one and this only has a 100 mbps poort. Any suggestions?
  4. So I'm a fan of using less electricity and have been contemplating my next CPU choice. To keep things simple (and/or ignorant) I'm only considering Intel CPUs. I'm aware that the power numbers I'm listing are TDP values and not actual electrical power, but to my understanding they are representative and probably proportional to the actual power use. With that in mind, here are my questions regarding a few comparisons. 1. I7 7700 (65W) vs i7 7700k (95W) - will the 7700k generally be using more power under the same processing load? Or will it only begin to use more power than the 7700 once it begins to do more work than it? 2. i5 7600k (91W) vs i7 6700 (65W) - will the i5 be using more power under maximum load than the i7, even though it will probably be doing a bit less work? 3. i5 7600 (65W) vs i7 7700 (65W) - will they be using the same amount of power under maximum load, even though the i7 will be easily outperforming the i5? Cheers
  5. Looking for suggestion of best disk defraggers to use. I mean, i know they're all basically the same. What i'm really asking is if there is any advantage to using a third party one vs the default windows. If so, are there any better options other than JKdefrag that don't have paid versions and are basically bloatware(looking at you Piriform)? Thanks.

  7. Hello guys how does the permission thing work on YouTube? • I want to use two songs for my future build video aka ''Project Redline'', but don't know how to ask for permission if i can use the songs. Can you please help me or give me advice? • Like i kinda dont want to get copyright or something like that, if you know what i mean.
  8. Hi guys! So I'm thinking about buying UPS, the power doesn't go out very often, I'd say maybe a 1-2 times in spring and autumn, but I'm thinking about buying it just to have peace of mind. There are two computers that I want to protect: 1. Workstation with i7-4770k, GTX780 (750W PSU on it) loads of drives and two 27 inch monitors. 2. iMac 21" (two years old) I bought a meter and run GPU and CPU benchmarks on both computers. The meter showed 529.2 W Max To have some overhead I was thinking about buying APC BX1400U-FR (http://www.apcmedia.com/salestools/AHUG-9G9DDV/AHUG-9G9DDV_R0_EN.pdf?sdirect=true). Would you say it's a good idea, would you recommend something else? Thank you in advance!
  9. Hello! Thank you for stopping by to help me with my issue, it's GREATLY appreciated! -----------------The GPU I am using is a Diamond Radeon HD 7970 I bought in May of 2013-------------------- Okay, so here is the problem... in MSI afterburner my GPU (on random occasions, for seemingly no reason) spikes WAY up from 0 GPU usage % in afterburner to 85%, 91% and recently went as high as 152% which I didn't even know was possible. the spikes are not constant, and only last a fraction of a second before going back down to 0, they can continue in a long string for a few seconds, or sometimes there is only 1-3 spikes before it stays at zero for quite a while, it seems I can get the spikes to stop by playing an on disk video, like a wmv file, playing it during one of the "spike episodes". though it could just be coincidence, since it's hard to gauge, as the spiking frequency is erratic, it can be as little as one spike every minute, to 1 spike every second for 20 seconds. These spikes occur whether I'm connected to the internet or not, I have unplugged the ethernet cord from my computer, and the spikes can go on for another few minutes, or seconds, depending on that specific "episode" of spikes. These spikes do not appear to affect my actual GPU clocks, temp, or fan speed, as the spikes can go on for a bit without the temp, fan, or clocks moving at all. Spikes appear at the same numbers in GPU-Z as they do afterburner, but the spikes seem to not appear, or at least not appear as high when using the Process Explorer, and they aren't ever consistent, my usage doesn't sit at a constant high value, but only spikes for a brief moment before returning to 0-ish. - Footnots on above paragraph for convenience - - GPU Spiking randomly to 81, 85, 91, and even 152% - Spikes happen when connected to the internet, or not, it doesn't appear to matter - Spikes seem to not affect the clock speeds, temperature, or fan speed of GPU - Spikes appear in both Afterburner, and GPU-Z, but not at all in Process Explorer (or at least to a lesser degree) Now, some background here, for the last 2 days I have been doing self trouble shooting, my first assumption based on internet searches, was that perhaps I had a bitcoin miner virus installed, but the symptoms for those are generally more aggressive, causing high usages for consistent periods of time, as well as causing high temperatures and fan speeds (which don't occur for me), but since I am paranoid about viruses and malware, I have scanned with AVG free, malwarebytes anti-malware, Malwarebytes anti-rootkit, TDSS Killer, and Hitman Pro, they have all come up clean, aside from a few tracking cookies or so, I have scanned with all these files in both normal mode, and safe mode. I also scanned with Rogue Killer, none of the found files or processes were "red" but there were some orange PUPs, I'm not entirely sure if they are dangerous but they appear to not be, I left them alone to stay on the safe side, I can list them below for reference if you think it could be a cause. So, basically all my scans came up empty. My next step was of course to figure out what was causing the usage, so I go into the task manager and try to find sketchy processes, but having looked them over and googling a lot, they seem to be legit, and since nothing is coming up on virus scanners, idk. So, I decided Task Manager was unreliable, so I downloaded a program through microsofts subsidiary website called "Process Explorer" it's basically task manager on steroids. I set tabs to show GPU Usage, but there didn't appear to be any processes listed using up GPU stuff, aside from things I already knew about, or had open, like flux, a browser, dwm.exe, CCC.exe, and Razer Synapse. I assumed the issue would appear upon closer graph inspection in Process Explorer, so I opened it to compare real-time to the spikes as they were happening on afterburner through the GPU Engine viewer in Process Explorer, spikes did seem to appear in Process Explorer, but they were much smaller, and being used by specific programs, or the dwm.exe, Perhaps the spikes were the same, but maybe Process Explorer maps out on a smaller scale? The percentages weren't showing up as high as they were in MSI or GPU-Z, but I don't know if it's because of a difference in usage reading between the programs or not. But this also seemed like a dead end, so on I went. From there I did some more troubleshooting, I deleted local temp folders, closed unecessary processes like adobe update, and these things didn't seem to make a difference, I tried updating my gpu drivers to the latest version, I tried updating MSI afterburner, as well as uninstalling and reinstalling the updated version, and none of these things seem to make a difference. Attached are images of the problem, as well as variants - The FIRST Image is the spikes going up to 150 just a little bit after using the FURMark Benchmark - The SECOND Image is the GPU Spikes on a regular inconsistent line, just a standard spike instance - The THIRD Image is the GPU spikes and what happens at the End when I play a local wmv video during the spike instance. - The FOURTH Image is the GPU Usage Spikes alongside the GPU monitoring and Engine graphs in Process Explorer SO Linus TechTips, I have come here, created an account and beg you for an answer as a last resort, as I still have no idea what the issue is, keeping in mind EVERYTHING I've already tried, I would love some input on how to go about solving this issue ps. What are the odds of a bitcoin mining virus going undetected by all the scans I've run? Also, in malwarebytes post scan results, when I hit view details, it says at the top part "malware protection disabled" above "website protection disabled" I assume this is talking solely about realtime protection? **EDIT** UPDATE** Okay, so a little update, I managed to stumble upon a sort of recreation of results. I am able to cause the spikes myself (sometimes) by going into afterburner, hovering over the graphs on the right with my mouse, until I get the window popup, and then proceeding to put my mouse over the popup window in after burner, and sort of just move it around over the window as the window is trying to close, this will cause spikes of a random size, but it doesn't always happen. The first time I did it it was causing 89+ spikes, a while after it was causing spikes up to 50%, and after it was only causing spikes of 5... I'm not sure what's going on. Also, I left the computer running with afterburner open overnight with the internet unplugged making sure to log the data, and I was able to both recreate the spikes with the method just mentioned, but the spikes would also happen every few minutes to every few dozen minutes, to one spike every hour maybe as I left it running overnight, and these happened seemingly at random. I'm not sure what this means, but all I know is I am able to cause spikes in afterburner if the conditions are met, I'm not entirely sure what the conditions are at the moment though. **UPDATE 2** Through some more digging it also seems my "csrss.exe" in Process ecplorer shows constant GPU Usage, not too big of deal, except when I force the spikes in afterburner using the method above, the csrss.exe GPU usage spikes as well, and I have 2 instances of csrss.exe running in Process explorer, only one shows up in task manager unless I check "processes from all users", both csrss.exe files go to the same file location when opened via task manager or Process Explorer. I don't know what signifigance this holds.
  10. Question Part 1: I have a single loop for my CPU set up by my grandfather about 2 years ago. It has not been maintained in any way, I had zero clue there was maintenance to be done on these systems & since I wasn't a part of the build, I didn't learn anything. I do not plan on using the cpu block again, however, I would like to know if it's possible to reuse the Pump/res combo ( http://www.xs-pc.com/discontinued-eol/x2o-750-dual-bayrespump-acrylic-v4 ) or the radiator (30mm x 240mm) for my next build. I'm now wholly aware that I probably have at the very least some corrosion on my CPU block. I saw some dude post about thinking his rad was corroded but turned out to be oxidation instead and he just needed to flush it out. Unfortunately, I have no way of disassembling my rig until 9/28/14(about 2 weeks from now) to physically drain/inspect the loop. Visibly it doesn't seem there is any bacterial/algal growth so maybe I got lucky (Yes, I do have a kill coil in the system.) Additionally, if my fittings aren't corroded, I assume I can re-use those as well? Question Part 2: (Prepare for some Advanced stupid here folks) I have a second 30mm x 240mm radiator sitting on the side of my case that has been collecting dust for about a year now. Can I simply flush out the dust and reuse that radiator or did I just throw away money? My main concern is that I won't be able to flush all the dust entirely and I'll end up inevitably gunking up my pump/blocks and causing issues later on. Question Part 3: I am attempting to plan a water cooling setup for my next rig (http://pcpartpicker.com/user/Sephonia/saved/gRYRsY). Based on everything I've read so far I should be good to go for the build with the listed components (Obviously, If I can re-use some parts I will be doing that.) Proposed Loop: Swiftech Apogee-XLC -- CPU Water Block (http://www.swiftech.com/apogeexl.aspx) EK-FC980 GTX - Acetal -- GTX 980 Gpu Block(http://www.ekwb.com/shop/ek-fc980-gtx-acetal.html) EK-RES X3 250 -- 250mm(h), ~440mL Reservoir (http://www.ekwb.com/shop/ek-res-x3-250.html) EK-D5 Vario X-TOP - Plexi (incl. pump) -- snazzy lookin' pump that I'm probably overpaying for. (http://www.ekwb.com/shop/ek-d5-vario-x-top-plexi-incl-pump.html) PrimoChill Tubing 1/2"ID x 3/4"OD Lots of 1/2"ID x 3/4"OD (G1/4" standard) fittings. Still trying to find some cute ones in pink to match my build, if anyone knows where, please let me know.
  11. Long story short, my power splitter partially caught fire, and looks like my fire hazard of a power supply (CX750m) is even more likely to catch fire now. I'm using the PC right now, and it is fine at the desktop, and low loads, but I tried starting up a game, and there was excessive buzzing coming from the PSU that I had never heard before, so I want tor replace it before it takes out the cpu or gpu... I've got braided cables that work with my current PSU, and I was wondering if something like the EVGA G2 series would work with the same cables? If not I would like to know if there are reasonably priced corsair power supplies that would work with it. I'd like to not spend more than $150 CAD if possible.
  12. So since yesterday night twitter keeps logging me out on my desktop and I want to know if any of you experienced this?
  13. Every time i run Elite dangerous, if my hard drive is spun down, it will spin up before the launcher for the game appears. What's weird is that i know for a fact there are no files on my HDD that Elite needs, and steam is nowhere near that drive either. So why does it need to spin up my HDD and make me wait for the clicky noise before i can play a game that i installed on Solid state media to prevent this exact thing ?
  14. I have a free copy of windows server 2016 from M$ imagine. It has the features that I need, but windows 10 pro also have them. Which one to use? Advantages/disadvantages of both OS?
  15. Hi, I'm searching solid in ear earphones for gaming, listening to music and biking. I never owned premium Earphones so I'm a noob and don't know what to buy. Right now I use the Razer Kraken Stereo Headphones, but the cable is breaking more and more. My Budget is around 100€. Any suggestions?
  16. I was just wondering tonight, what would you use your tablet for ? I mean, I don't have one right now, and I'm not planning on buying one, because I find this pretty much useless :/ I kind of see why it is useful for some persons that are constantly travelling, but for others, and at home ? Just explain it to me, I don't get it
  17. Using a 1155 heatsink that has been cleaned and removed from the fan as a coaster. Want to turn it into a hotplate for my coffee. Can't find any guides. Somebody help me with the hopefully epic economical and all round awesome mod!
  18. Hello Guys,I recently replace my almost 10-year old Lenovo ThinkPad R61 with a Intel Core 2 Duo T7300,1 GB DDR2,(Originally was a 100 GB Hitachi Drive, which had a failing Windows Install on it,so We though the drive failed,we replaced it with a 500 GB HGST HDD 5400 RPM,the original was 7200 RPM,had a difference in usablilty (since windows 7 on such lackluster amount of ram, being compared to Windows XP put after wiping the Vista installation) Now SSD which probably will carry forward to my now current laptop a Acer TravelMate P643-V Core i5 3360M 4 GB DDR3,320 GB HDD,etc great laptop with 800 problems. Now I want a purpose for my old ThinkPad,I have it being used as a file server, but doesn't make a hell of a lot of sense in it with so lackluster internet (100 kbp/s download, even slow upload speed) and It is running Windows Vista (what it originally came with, running smooth, just web browsing is a pain with that very high amount of RAM ,but not the original install of the OS,I installed Vista on the 4th April) Any Use for this old ThinkPad.It has extra's such as a half dead keyboard, dead battery, barely working DVD-DL Drive, and no CMOS battery(i removed it so i can turn on the laptop without a working power button since ThinkPad's from this era have the power button ON THE KEYBOARD) I'm fine in investing for a new keyboard for this, battery probably and if i can,a FLOPPY DRIVE for the ultrabay (lel) to restore it to fully working, plastics are breaking, but ill glue it,etc, whatever? So Is there any use for this obsolete laptop? Thanks
  19. Hi guys. What is the best fluid for water cooling systems? I am using distilled water. Should I use any additives to prevent corrosion? I have all copper components. What do you think?
  20. What Keyboard does linus use on a daily basis? I saw him mention it in this vid: but I don't know how to spell it. I'm looking for a good backlit mechanical keyboard with programmable buttons because my old mac keyboard really just annoys me, and because linus mentions his keyboard, I wanted to see if I like his. (btw I'm using my mac keyboard on my windows gaming pc)
  21. Hello I just wanted to ask if using the HDD from my old PC, which has only Windows 7 files on will work in my new PC. I can't really afford to buy Windows 7 again as I went overbudget on my build Thanks
  22. I'm selling my current laptop for something that is still powerful but very portable. I've been look at convertibles and tablet PC options as a choice. The lenovo thinkpad yoga is on the top of my list at the moment. I'd be using it for normal internet surfing, video watching that type of thing with light gaming that it could handle. On the other side I would use it for work in web development and photoshop when I'm away from my main machine If anyone has used it please give me your feedback about it. The good, the bad and would you still go with the yoga if you had the choice or something else? Thank you!
  23. I use a desktop motherboard, i5-6600 cpu, 2x4gb memory, 1 nvidea gtx1060, one 120gb ssd and 1tb ram, dvd-rom optical drive, standard mouse and keyboard, i use ports to connect headset and keyboard. 1 80mm fan. and a 24 inch monitor. i game a lot (4 hours a day maybe less maybe more). I used sites like coolermaster to calculate cpu but they give something different every time. I think theres quite a difference in 250w and 650 w so thought i'd ask.
