So this is a bit of an idea I had recently... Potentially even an idea for exploration in an LTT video! I've been thinking about how it would be possible to outfit the HTC Vive (the headset I have) with USB-C instead of the included cable. Prologue: I had an opportunity a while ago to try out one of those wireless VR gaming backpack things in a store once that turns the Vive (I think it was the Vive version if I recall) into a wireless headset, and honestly... I could feel the lag vs a cable, it's just not the same. I just don't think the tech is there yet, even as impressive as all the fancy 5G or WiGig tech is... it's still not good enough. So since I'm going to be sticking to cables for now, I was trying to think of ways to take that bulky tri-cable setup and turn it into a single USB-C cable, coming straight from the headset, that goes straight intro the PC. VirtualLink is basically the failed attempt at a standard that is the reason NVIDIA puts USB-C connectors on their GPUs. It's a cool name but technically not the same thing as USB-C, it's an alt-mode. I believe the only difference to DisplayPort alt-mode is that it provides 2 DP lanes and a USB 3.2 lane instead of 1 DP lane and a USB 3.1 lane. (Though I might be wrong on the numbers there as there's conflicting info and even Wikipedia seems a little confused tbh) Point is, there's liely barely any practical performance difference between them (5Gbps vs 10 for the USB, basically irrelevant, speed does not equal latency and only the latter matters much to VR sensors), so there's no real reason to stress out about not using purpose-built USB-C based adapters. And VirtualLink-compatible hardware is practically non-existent because it's basically a failed standard. So with that out of the way, the problem we need to solve is carrying the USB 3, HDMI, and power for the headset all through a single cable. The first two are easy enough... It's the third that gets tricky. You might recall this adapter by Accell that made the headlines a little while ago, meant for adapting an Oculus Rift to using USB-C. But it only carries USB and HDMI, no power... Fine for the Rift since it can be powered by USB, but with the Vive, that barrel plug is required! The HTC Vive is powered via it's Link Box by 12VDC at 2A... Though it will work basically fine off 1A from my own testing with a bench supply. Interestingly, it also seems to work fine at 9V 2A. Additionally, a surprising fact is that the Link Box is completely optional and unnecessary! The only requirement for using the Vive without the Link Box is that your PC has Bluetooth built-in, and that you can find a female barrel jack to sacrifice that happens to be the right size! (Btw, I've actually noticed slightly better performance without the Link Box in some cases, looks like the radios in it take up some of that precious bandwidth, lol) Anyhow, that 12V power requirement is probably good news as that's a standard voltage for USB PD! So if the GPU's output port, or the USB-C port of a gaming laptop as another example, can supply 12V via USB PD then theoretically, this should be able to work. However, I have no clue if that's the case. For example the new laptop I've got (well, purchased, but it hasn't come in yet as it's a special order) lists the max wattage of the Thunderbolt 3 ports and claims to support USB PD (though doesn't say if that's for input only or both ways), but doesn't mention supported voltages anywhere. It can supply up to 15W, which would be 5V 3A or 12V 1.25A. Of course, the next problem is what to do at the other end of the cable, the headset end. That's where a USB-C hub comes in! These are easy enough to find on the cheap, and any should do as long as it's got an HDMI port and USB 3.0. Here's one for $25 for example: https://amazon.com/dp/B07QXMNF1X I have one for example with 3 USB 3.0 ports and one 4K/60Hz HDMI. I like it because it doesn't have any of that useless bloat like a bunch of 2.0 ports and a multi-card reader. Just the essentials so it's nice and compact. That said I haven't tested to ensure that it works with my headset, but I can confirm that (besides working with a phone which is what I bought it for) it works with a desktop through the USB-C port on the GPU. You can connect a display, USB 3.0 devices, and USB 2.0 devices, all at once, without a hitch. Of course that still doesn't solve our power delivery issue... For that I think the solution might be one of these! That's a USB-C PD trigger, it simply tricks the USB-C device it's connected to into supplying the correct output voltage you want... assuming that device is capable of outputting said voltage. If we set it to 12V, then connecting it to the headset should allow a 12V supply over a single cable! The only thing to watch out for would be that the hub you're using provides a USB Type-C passthrough port compatible with USB PD (up to 100W of passthrough power). That should allow the higher voltage to pass through the cable while the lower-voltage 5V is simultaneously supplied to power the hub's own USB ports! Yup that's right, two voltages at once. It really works. Isn't USB-C freakin' amazing? And that brings us to the final problem... Err, well... where the heck to find such a long USB-C cable! That I don't know, but I'm sure you could find one if you looked hard enough. Alright so I know this is a long post but I'd love thoughts on this, not so much a question but I'm hoping to incite a discussion about um... odd VR and USB-C things.

I am getting parts together to build a new gaming/streaming rig when AMD 4000 comes out. The case that I'm looking at says that it has a front USB Type C connector that I want to use, but it doesn't specify if it's Gen.1 or Gen.2. If I plug it into the Thunderbolt header on my MOBO will it give me Thunderbolt 3 speed, or should I find a case that I know has a Gen.2 plug?

I have a XPS 13 (2016) and a Monoprice monitor, I have been trying to connect it over the USB-C interface then to HDMI on the monitor. That was not working so I updated the Thunderbolt drivers and firmware and my BIOS (as the TB firmware required a newer version), I was able to get the montior connected using a USB-C to HDMI adapter but even that is not ideal. Ideally what I want to do is have the connection go like this: USB-C --> HDMI --> DVI-D. As I only have HDMI port and DVI-D port on the monitor and the HDMI is taken by my desktop. So here's the new problem, when I attempt the connection using the chain USB-C --> HDMI --> DVI-D, both screen go black and stay black and only come back on when I unplug them (yes the monitor is on the right input), all this even after getting the latest firmwares/drivers. Any suggestions? Is it even possible (USB-C 3.1 to HDMI to DVI-D for video output)?

Hello. I only have a type-c and hdmi 1.2 port on my laptop (ASUS GL552VW). I recently bought a 144hz monitor for an upcoming build but in the meantime I want to use it with my laptop and I am wondering if a usb 3.1 (type-c) to displayport adpater would work?

Having used the Surface Pro 2 for almost 4 years, and also being in full agreement with Linus's opinion that the I/O on the newest hardware offerings from Microsoft were lacking in this department, this is an exciting possibility. According to the article listed below, Microsoft has filed patents that make it seem that While the actual speeds remain in question, I am excited that I could travel without the proprietary brick, and simply bring a USB battery bank, and charge the surface with the same type-c cable that I charge my phone with. Also, the possibility Thunderbolt could also mean expansion with external graphics card enclosures in the future, as well as faster file transfer speeds for creative professionals who often need to transfer large files to and from external devices. I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts on this! https://www.theverge.com/2017/7/13/15963728/microsoft-surface-usb-c-connector-patent

First off, new to the forum but have been subscribed to the YT channel for years and frequently ghosted the forum for said time. Apologies first off if I mis-tagged this thread or something? TLDR-X99 Gaming Pro Carbon doesn't have the regular "H" style header, it has a USB Type-C on the motherboard. How would one go about connecting a front panel connector to it? The X99 Gaming Pro Carbon has been one of those motherboards that have dropped significantly in price since Ryzen came out and changed core counts on mainstream platforms. If one were to plan on getting a few of these for family members it could be a pretty good machine that would last sometime since the supported CPU's are fairly close to 1st gen Ryzen. I was looking into it at least when I noticed that the USB Type-C header on the mother boards are Type-C themselves??? So, after looking for roughly 2 hours for anything on this, I decided it was finally time to double down and make the forum account, and thus RoboPirateNinja was born.... Really though, does anyone have an idea about how to fix this? edited to fix title

The driver came on a CD and like who's laptop has a CD drive these days! I have put the drivers on a USB and installed them on my laptop but still when I click on update drivers and go to the folder where they are they do not show up as selectable. Could you please help me? Drivers are attached below. Laptop - HP 14bf054sa Monitor - AOC I160FWUX 1601w.cat 1601W.icm 1601W.INF

Hi , im new here so im not sure if this is the correct forum category. I have a bmw which needs a special cable in order to listen to musc with AUX in directly what your phone plays. If you only use usb then you can only play whatever is on your phone and you pick it through the cars screen. The specific cable for the car is very short and it only has a lightning output, i spoke with a person on a BMW service and dealer company and they had no idea. For soem reason its only possible to use bluetooth for contacts and speaking through your car but not to play music which i find stupid. Together with my iphone i have a Samsung Note which has a ucb type-c port , i was trying to find a lightning female to usb type a female so i would have to use many cables and adapters and swap every time. The picture below is the only thing i could find but i cant find where to purchase it. If you have any easy alternatives please dont be shy and keep in mind that i live in Greece so i might not be able to order some things. Car model: BMW 125D 2013 Thanks!

Hi All I've posted a few times before about a potential build I'm looking at doing sometime in the near future. It'll be with a custom case, very boxy acrylic panels with an NH D15s on both the CPU and GPU. Inspiration came from an old DIY Perks video. As with this type of build, I'd need new front panel IO as well as a switch. Switches are pretty easy to find, obviously lots of different options and we're spoilt for choice. Finding a new front panel IO however, seems a bit more difficult... I've researched a few and although some look ok and I can take off the shroud or (if the shroud is nice) cut it down so its much smaller, there seem to be a lot of mixed results about whether the products genuinely provide the speeds advertised. The mobo in the build will most likely have USB type C, whilst I don't necessarily need it right now I'd quite like to make use of it with it becoming more popular. There is an Akasa one which looks good, would just need to cut it down a bit and has the ports I want, however a review here said the speeds advertised weren't accurate: https://www.amazon.com/Akasa-InterConnect-Type-C-Panel-Ports/dp/B07KCLY4YB#customerReviews I don't want to buy a case just to use the front panel and the only other one I have is an 011 Dynamic which is definitely not going under the knife! Do people typically go on ebay etc to find spare parts and just use those or any other feedback you might have? In case people are interested, attached is a very crudely drawn image with some notes etc on it which is a very rough first draft, just getting notes in my head down (definitely no measurements yet!) I was thinking of putting the front panel at the bottom left, next to the PSU, so that it wouldn't obstruct any airflow for the CPU or GPU as this would likely be the only other areas it could fit and look clean. Feedback welcome!

Hello Some time I have purchased Laptop Dell Latitude 3590 + docking station Dell WD15 (connected by USB type-C) and two screens Dell U2717D. System: Windows 10 Pro 64 bit, Dell have two graphic cards, Intel + AMD fire pro. So it is connected like: laptop--> USB type C --> docking station --> display port --> Screen 1 --> display port pass thru --> Second screen I have problem to setup on both screens in native resolution 2560x1440. Windows allows only Screen 1 (1920x1080) + Second 2 (2560x1440). Both windows system settings and Intel graphics does not allow to set up screens as I want. According to this table i should be able to do it without problem http://www.displayport.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Display-Res-Photo.jpg Do you have and tips what to change to solve this ?

Hello, I am wondering if anyone has suggestions for a couple of cables? I would like to have three USB Type-C to USB Type-C for my new Google Pixel 3, Google Pixel Stand, and one for charging the remote for the Google DayDream View's Controler. I also require a USB-A to Micro USB for the Google Home Mini. The main reason I want them is that sometimes the first party cables are crap, however, I am not sure how well Googles chargers work.

I have few Lenovo 45W USB Type C laptop chargers that auto adjust between 5V/2A, 9V/2A, 15V/3A or 20V/2.25A and Aputure AL-F7 LED lights that uses same type of connector. Can I use these chargers for these lights? Aputure confirmed USB Type C on their lights can be used for powering them on but I wonder if Lenovo charger will be smart enough not to send 20V to them. Does anyone have more technical insight on this or used similar setup? It comes without saying none of the two manufacturers would confirm compatibility. Hey, As usb type-c is getting more popular i got this question, that i cannot find an answer... I have Xiaomi mi notebook with usb type-c charger. On charger there are his output specifications: 5v - 2a / 12v - 2a / 15v - 3a / 9v - 2a / 20v - 3.25a 65W max So, i now that usb 2.0 has 5v passing over it, knowing that type-c is backward compatible (as i understand there are different types of it, that meets specifications of usb 2.0, 3.0 ant etc.). If i understand correctly, because power adapter can supply 5v i can connect to it any usb 2.0 device? And theoretically if i have phone power adapter with type-c i can connect to pc and it just won't charge, because power voltage will be to low, but both devices will not be damaged? Because i think that creators of type-c has thought about all people that doesn't bother to look into specifications before connecting things...

So I have a new phone, it's the s8 active, and with all new samsung phones comes a handy dandy otg adapter(usb type c Male to usb 3.0 female). After looking at my grafics card sitting on a riser, I wondered what would happen if I powered the card up and ran the usb not into my computer but instead into my samsung s8? Would I be able to use it as a display adapter to my TV without having to get a hdmi adapter? Can you edit your android settings on your phone to use the graphics card to put out more frames? More pixels? (Currently my phone can put out wqhd through the usb-c charge port, but only at a sad 30fps, and no 4k when I plug it into my 4k tv.) Has anyone tried this? Can you root your android operating system to make it work? Does android even support pcie grafic cards? Haven't seen anything yet online

Can I charge my HP Pavilion laptop via USB-C?
Wayman posted a topic in Laptops and Pre-Built Systems
I have recently bought a new HP Pavilion 14-bf010na with a USB C port. I have a Google Pixel phone with Type C charger and was wondering if I could charge the laptop with the usb c cable rather than the included power brick. Obviously I could just plug it in and try it, but I don't want to risk bricking the PC, or the port. Thank you for the help.- 3 replies

This is a more kind of why "there is not (yet)" type of question. Why there is not a high end video card with USB Type-C (thunderbolt) video output? For example, what if I want a pro-sumer rig, with 3 screens, but don't want all the 6 cables (3 power, 3 video) that come with it. Mabie, only 1 usb type C chaining the 3 screens directly to the video Card, or maybe, just 3 direct cables from the card. Could the architecture support it?

Well just like the title says, why don't we have proper implementations of USB type-C in cases? I mean if you look at the cases from CES videos that all the tech youtubers posted, almost all of them either don't have type-c or if they do it's clear that they just replaced type A and put a type-C there. It was never designed for type-c. Now I get that it takes time to design a case and build a prototype and then re-design etc. etc. etc., but type-c was released in like what 2014 or 2015, something like that yet it's clear that only the cases that will be released in late 2018 or 2019 will actually proper implementation of that connector. So why so late?

Hi there friends, looking to buy a new laptop. I remember watching one of LTT videos a while back and Linus said you only need USB Type-C to use External GPU. However after waching the HP Spectre video, I found that there are USB Type-C and USB Type-C ports with thunderbolt. To clarify, do I need a laptop with a port that has USB Type-C with Thunderbolt 3 functionality. Or will any standard USB Type-C port work with an external GPU?

so i came to the conclusion that people that bought a laptop before the usb-c was out feel pretty much cheated out of money, be that gaming laptops to the workstation user. after some digging and such and my own head to the wall moment i found that a M.2 adapter and extension do exist for this reason, well more so for developers and test bench experts, SO the main thing here is and i get asked this by a few people Can you convert M.2 to USB-C OR m.2 to PCIE 1x 4x 8x and to my research YES!!!! this is totally possible although the information on it isn't out their nor do many vendors carry such devices. with the help of a few websites i stumbled across i can now add usb type C to my current laptop (yes i know i should have waited and buy a real laptop) but the main thing is i hope their are others here that have the same ideas on this or know of more streamline vendors for this so far a PCIE adapter card slot is the easiest to do and then its a matter of buying a ad-don card like a asus type-C ad-don or so forth any added info from LTT would be great. I have known of the connector type but since I have not used one before I am interested in knowing the functionality of it. I am looking into buying a new laptop for gaming (at home only) and good portability, and I my goal is to have the ability to connect an external GPU while also connecting an external display with support for 4K at 60Hz. I know that thunderbolt 3 can do both, I cant seem to find info about doing both at the same time. While this may be a newb question, knowing that thunderbolt 2 uses different pin config for display out and connecting things such as thunderbolt storage. My question is this: can I connect an external GPU and display out through thunderbolt 3 without having bandwidth problems? I have searched google and youtube, but have not found a direct answer to this specific question. The alternative is to buy a unit that has both thunderbolt 3 and hdmi 2.0 or a display port, but everything I have found is a less portable bulky gaming laptop at a much higher price point.
