Hi all, I'm at a total loss on my homebuilt PC. I'll list all my specs at the bottom of this post but first the issue. Only while in game, and across multiple games i have tried ( Baldur's Gate 3, Fortnight, Apex Legends, Minecraft, all played at all different settings for graphics) the PC will either crash to desktop, BIOS screen with an error of an unstable over clock ( even though i have reverted back to stock settings), or it will go through a reset cycle. The crash logs for each game I can get ahold of all have the same sort of verbiage like " GPU initialization failed". Also specifically Fortnite and Baldur's gate most crash sequences that fail to desktop say there is an error with the game filed and to verify game files, which I have done may times. there is no rhyme or reason that i can see that causes the crash, its always at different spots and different work loads with the games. I have tried even underclocking and undervolting everything I can in some sort of attempt to aid me in research, but I have moved everything back to stock to hopefully start diagnosing from scratch. I'm not super savvy with diagnosing issues like this and i am at a frustrating loss, and no amount of research i have done has pointed me in any sort of direction as to where to even start. Thank you for any input. Hi, so after blaming everything on software and doing everything in my power to mitigate that, I've finally come to this forum because nothing has worked. I tried DDU in my previous OS, and it didn't solve anything, I tried rolling back drivers and the latest drivers, nothing worked. And finally I decided to completely wipe my drive and got a fresh Windows, but it still hasn't worked. I've tried fiddling around with my power plan settings, and that hasn't worked either and I've set the power management mode to maximum performance and that also did not work. I've tried stress testing it with Furmark and Kombustor, which also yielded no results. I tried to overclock it see if it changes, which also doesn't at all have any effect. It currently is always stuck at 135MHz GPU clock and 405MHz memory clock, or when I stress test it goes to 139MHz GPU clock and 810MHz memory clock, but nothing more. Regarding heating, it idles at 45 degrees Celsius when no fans or anything is on, and when I do turn it on it usually idles at around 37 degrees Celsius, so I think it's not at risk of that. Even stress testing it has never pushed it above 70 degrees Celsius. This is my GPU https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/202237/asus-gtx1060-6144-180129-1 Really hoping to get some help and resolve it because I'm in no position to upgrade or put it into repairs right now. Edit: Some people might suggest bottleneck, but I have an i5-7400 and have gamed on this rig for the past 2-ish years, it's all of a sudden I started running into these problems for the past month or so. Update: I was messing around with the GPU, I took it out and plugged it back in again, and after turning it on I tried stress testing it and everything worked fine again, not sure why. But as soon as I turned off the stress software, it clocked back to 139/810 and won't go to the normal clocks of anymore 1,800MHz/4104MHz which it was hitting literally seconds ago without a hitch. I'm really lost.

Hi all, I have an Gigabyte GeForce RTX 2060 Super Gaming OC 8G that I got in Nov '19. After the LTT video, I decided to try out NiceHash QuickMiner, and mine in the background when I'm doing college work (Zoom/Word/PowerPoint stuff). Their OCTune determined the optimum settings for my card were: Core Clock: 1020 mhz Core Volt: 662 mv Memory Clock: 7601 mhz The thing is.... I want to try mining ETH without NiceHash (using Ethermine Pool and T-Rex), but I'm struggling to re-create the above settings with MSI Afterburner, and I'm getting confused because I think Afterburner works with deltas rather than fixed values (?). I managed to get "similar" values with the below but the core clock jumps around +/-200mhz and the voltage +/-80mv. Power Limit: 52 % Temp Limit: 67 c Core Clock: +0 mhz Memory Clock: +800 mhz Am I doing something wrong? (First two screenshots of OCTune and HWINFO were taken with with NiceHash QuickMiner+OCTune. Last screenshot was taken with OCTune disabled and Afterburner controlling underclock/overclock/voltages)

I have a rtx 2080 ti, but the problem is that bottlenecks my cpu which is a i5-4570. I have a dumb question but is it possible if I underclock it would stop bottle necking my cpu, and how do I do it?

As a mild curiosity I have been underclocking my Asus 1070 Rog Strix down A LOT, like 268 MHz as of right now low, and was wondering if there was actually any danger to the hardware in doing this? I don't have a reason to do this but do want to proceed with even lower clock rates if I can safely do so because why not. Thanks for the help!

Hello, If I were to underclock a Ryzen 3950x (16c/32t, 3,5GHz, about 145W max.) to have the same power consumption as the 3600x (6c/12t, 3,8GHz, about 76W max.), would I get about the same performance? Even if they're using the same architecture, the answer is probably no since the corecount on the 3950x is much higher. But at what point becomes the coreclock so low it evens out with the 3600x performance wise? Or in other words: At what point becomes frequency stronger than the amount of cores? I'm asking this because of the 3950x laptop video LTT made a few days ago. The TDP of that machine was 65 Watts if I'm correct so the 3950x was underclocked. And I had the question if they wouldn't be better of with a cheaper CPU using less cores but then at a higher frequency (I suppose). Probably not, I'm sure the manifacturers tested it. Otherwise they wouldn't have done it because it would be a waste of money, OR they just did it because of the marketing.) Please don't ask for the point of it or try to change the concept / come up with ideas that evade the root of this problem. Please just answer the question. Thanks in advance :)

Hi. I am upgrading from R5 2400G and wondered if I could use it to build a passively cooled HTPC (Windows+Kodi/Netflix/YouTube/Skype or similar) So, the question is if it is possible to underclock 2400G so that it could be passively cooled and still handle HTPC tasks. If it is reasonable/possible, which cooler should I use? Thanks!

I have this card setup in a cooler master h500 and have been hitting 94 degrees about 5 minutes in to gameplay. I removed the heatsink some time ago(about 3 months ago) to reapply thermal paste and the thermals didn't seem to change. I undervolted using MSI afterburner and that gets my temps hovering around 86-91 degrees when in game so I decided to underclock the GPU to try to bring the temps down further. I have the core clock set to 944 MHz and the memory clock to 1249 MHz (from the factory 1040/1500) and the temperatures are around 74-80 degrees. So my first question is are these stable frequencies? I know cards can be unstable at certain frequencies when oc'ing but does the same pertain to underclocking? Also, can I further reduce the voltage now that the core clocks and memory clocks are lowered? I'll take all the cooling I can get at this point. I have also been thinking of mounting a 92mm exhaust fan on the empty pci slots of the case to let some more of the GPU's heat out. I have had this card since early to mid 2016 but I didn't use it for a couple of several month-long stents while I had it in a box so I want to get some more use out of it. Ultimately, I know it's time for an upgrade but I just upgraded my CPU/mobo/ram so I won't have money for that for another year or even 18 months. Hey guys! I just saw Dave2D's new video about underclocking CPU voltage on a laptop for better thermal performance. I have a Yoga 3 Pro and it's thermal throttling a bit at times. So my questions is: How good for an idea is it to underclock a laptop CPU, and is it possible on a M-5Y51 CPU? Dave2D's video: Thank you for answering Peace out - Malte

Does anyone here have any experience with underclocking a cpu for a better thermal performance in small formfactor pcs (planning a sleek build in a Lian Li PC-O5X)??? I wonder how the temperatures vary in lower clockspeeds. The reason for that is that I don't want to use a closed loop liquid cooling solution, but rather a low profile aircooler by noctua.

Hello everyone, I have a problem with my GPU. Most games run fine but some more demanding games such as Just Cause 2, CoD Ghosts and others always crash after a couple minutes of gameplay. My PC specs: CPU: Intel Core i5 6600K @ 4.5Ghz (Overclocked) COOLER: Cooler Master Seidon 120V (ver.2) MOTHERBOARD: Gigabyte Z170X Gaming 3 RAM: 16GB DDR4 RAM @ 2133Mhz GPU: Zotac GTX 650 Ti The GPU runs at 1033Mhz under load (up from the reference model 928Mhz) which is unstable and crashes with demanding games. I underclocked the card to 940Mhz with MSI Afterburner which seems to be stable, or at least it stopped games from crashing. I have not touched memory speed. Core voltage doesn't help with stability at 1033Mhz (even when the slider is all the way to the right). Is this normal for old GPUs or do I have a partially faulty card?

I have an MSI GTX 970 Gaming with the pcb rev. 1.3. It has been working fine most of the time with it being overclocked like this: https://gyazo.com/ddc9390ff716aebe85138f513dbf624f Usually its running at ca 1500mhz but it wont clock higher and usually at 1.243V. But this happends randomly. I have tried everything i found like Increasing fan speed because of vrm overheating but to no help. neither did changing preferences in nvidia control panel. This makes every game totally unplayable. I need help... temps never proceed 79 degrees C. Can provide more info if needed

I want to downvolt to make my pc quiet. But i dont know the right way, could someone point me in the right direction? Tried to do it in bios, got crashes. Also i dont want to destroy my pc. Mobo is MSI PC MATE My PSU would also run quieter with lower load as its ramp up pretty heavily.

Hello, I want to Build a Cheap PfSense Router and I dont need much cpu power so how much can I underclock/undervoltage the AMD X4 950? I want to Limit the Power consumption. But Please don't recommend a atom or so, I need a ATX Mainboard for my 3 dual-port Fiber cards + 1 quad-port RJ45 : ) Or do you know a cheap and power efficient CPU with at least 4 threads or cores (preferred).

Hi, I bought an R9 Fury Nitro from Sapphire used, just a few weeks ago. When I bought it i only made sure that it works under load, but I unfortunately did not have a look at the clock speed it was running at. Whenever I put the card under full load (both stress-testin and real world gaming load) it starts throwing the clockspeed all over the place and eventually settles in at about 400mhz. Temperature can not be the issue since it never reaches more than 45C thanks to a watercooler. I researched online and some people seemed to have the same problem with the Fury Cards, but none of their fixes worked at all. Neither Clockblocker, nor increasing the voltage in Trixx had any results - the ladder even made it worse. Could there be any damage to the card that results in this behaviour? I'd really appreciate If anyone knew something to try out in order to fix the problem. Even though I'm a pretty techy person I am starting to run out of ideas. If it helps, here are the system specs: i7 3770 Asus PZ77-V LK motherboard 16Gb Crucial Ballistics DDR3 Sapphire R9 Fury Nitro Corsair RM750x PSU Thanks in advance, Simon btw. I already checked for the usual suspects, like power draw, bad cables, bios/ driver updates, etc...

Weird question here. I have a 144hz monitor that I bought, but I want it to "last as long a possible" and still have some of the advantages of having a high refresh rate panel. Does running a monitor on a lower than rated refresh rate "extend" its lifespan? For example using a 240hz panel but run it on 144hz, a 144hz panel running or 100hz/120hz, ect.

I wasn't too sure where this belongs because it has things relating to Overclocking, Gaming & Troubleshooting so here goes for now. In the MMO RuneScape I play, I'm experiencing slightly larger FPS drops than I think I should be happening due to my 3GB MSI GTX 1060 Gaming X underclocking itself. Now the explanation I got on their forums was that my OC is unstable & that GPU boost auto ramps the card up or down depending on temperatures & if mine were kept in check then it'd be just fine between 1.8 & 1.9GHz, implying anything above that is always unstable as a rule. All of this I already know & is NOT occurring at the time, temps are in the 40's, usage in 30's, power percentage 20's & power limit never hitting 1. So please correct me if I'm wrong or agree if I'm right in the following questions/statements. 1: If my OC was unstable in that game during that time at that place, I'd experience a crash, freeze or hit power limit at the same time as that downclock, right? 2: Because that's not happening, is it safe to assume that it's an issue with the games Client possibly going into a more conservative mode from being overwealmed by all the characters & thus making the GPU think it doesn't need to work as hard? 3: Is it possible that because the game's coders are just bad that they didn't make it so that the game client can handle more than a 1.9GHz GPU Core Clock, thus making the reply I got there true?

Hello, I suppose I have an issue here - as a friend of mine has lost some cables from his modular power supply, he can't yet replace his GTX 670 which I would be getting otherwise. As my power supply should be able to just about handle it, he handed me a R9 290X Lightning (another hand down from another friend) for the time being. Now the issue - I don't want to risk anything with my PSU, so I would like to undervolt and underclock the GPU. Is that easily possible, or can I expect some issues? Or should I just keep my GTX 560 for a couple more weeks? Or should I just stop worrying and start again once I run into actual issues? Hardware: Xeon e5649 @4 GHz (6 core) + EKL Brocken Eco MSI x58 Pro-E 6x4GB DDR3 R9 290X Lightning Samsung 840 Evo 250 GB 250 GB Samsung 7.2kRPM HDD (could live without this, but I doubt it'll make a relevant difference with power consumption) Asus Xonar DGX (could live without this, but I doubt it'll make a relevant difference with power consumption) Be Quiet! Pure Power L8 530W modular power supply Case: top of the cardboard box the board arrived in, at least for now (have some plans for that)

Laptop 1070 Memory Underclocking=Stability & Performance
padams0511 posted a topic in Graphics Cards
I've noticed something curious, I'm running an Asus Laptop from last year with a laptop 1070 and a Core I7-6700HQ. Anyone who as a laptop 1070 knows how difficult it is for them to hit their boost clock, or even the base clock sometimes. So, knowing that the power limit is hard coded and that I lacked any thermal headroom, it is a laptop card overall. I went out to see if underclocking the memory on the card would improve the stability of the core clock, and it did, reducing the memory clock by 100Mhz and increasing the GPU clock by 100Mhz yielded a 2.6% performance gain in Unigine Heaven, Underlocking the memory further seemed to reduce performance, but I was wondering if anyone has done this before and enjoyed similar performance gains, or if it has been investigated by someone else, a quick google search yielded little information. While this might only mean the difference between 62 and 64 FPS, I think any enthusiast would rather take the 64.- 15 replies

Although I know Zen is still over a couple months away, I've been looking at dual channel 16GB (2x8GB) kits & am wondering about something. It's true I could just get Corsair Vengence DDR4 2133 with 13 CAS & be happy with that, but what would happen if I got G.SKILL TridentZ or Ripjaws V DDR4 3200 at 14 CAS & underclocked them? Would that reduce their latency below 13 & still maintain a higher speed than the budget RAM?

Hey! Recently I bought these things: X570 AORUS ELITE (latest bios - F5a) Ryzen 5 3600X 2 x Kingston HyperX 3200Mhz 16GB To replace my skylake platform. What left is: few sata ssds few hdds 500GB m.2 pcie BeQuiet Straight Power 10 5U Rack case with 120mm intake and 2x80mm bequiet fans Gigabyte RTX 2070 OC My plan was to not oc, stay with stock settings, use stock, same I was using on my Intel 6700 and just have fun. It didn't happen. Running this gen 3 Ryzen on stock cooler was a disaster, so I've bought rated 125TDP Pure Rock Slim by, ofc, bequiet (with Thermal Grizzly) and... it didn't really help. 60C on iddle, up to 75 on stress and all fans spinning like a helicopter. I decided to return it to the shop and I've bought 3600 (non-x). The thing is... it's still almost the same. Maybe a little bit better. So... I've downloaded Ryzen Master and created 2 profiles 1. default settings 2. Super Silent which means: downclock to 3,3Ghz undervolt to 1,18V Second profile works pretty nice for playing world of warships or other games (ultra, 1440p), also browsing the net and generic stuff works just fine with pretty nice temps: ~40C iddle, up to ~60C on load. After all my primary question is: IS THIS SAFE? And any news about amd fixing those stock temps? ps. sorry for my english, I'm not native.

Hello. I few days ago I posted a question on this forum asking whether or not downgrading to a less powerful GPU help CPU bottleneck, and I had concluded that it actually wont. Now I was wondering if underclocking a GPU will help bottleneck, because it seems logical for me because overclocking the CPU does help. Thanks.

I have bought a 1060 3gb amp edition few days back and today in once instance saw a driver crash which i am expecting is due to high temp crossing 83C, i am thinking of reducing the temp by underclocking and undervolting but have no clue as to how much shud i reduce propotionatly, India (Summer Season atm) GPU Idle temp is being 37C -45C using VLC 1080p video upto 52C Gaming : in lobby 60C, During gameplay it hits upto 80 current clock and specifications as given in the link https://www.zotac.com/us/product/graphics_card/zotac-geforce®-gtx-1060-3gb-amp-edition#spec
