Hello all, I made the unfortunate decision of buying a Razer blade stealth two an a half years ago and have had two of them malfunction and/or die on me. (I care about my hardware and did not in any way abuse them.) I also bought into the whole eGPU ecosystem, and I'm not too terribly excited to get rid of any good hardware that is working condition. As a result I am in the market for a new laptop that is thin and light like the blade, has thunderbolt / works with my eGPU, and is relatively cheap. For replacements I have been looking at the Dell XPS 13, MSI Summit B14, and the Asus Zenbook 13. The models that I have been looking at all have an i5-1135G7 with Xe graphics which is plenty powerful when I am on the go. (When I am at home I'll have my Desktop for gaming and my Razer Core with an EVGA GTX 960.) All three of these laptops are around $800 and my range is $500-$1000. Does anybody have any comments about these three choices or additional recommendations for machines that would meet my requirements? I'll post my links below. https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/laptops/13/spd/xps-13-9305-laptop/xn9305epfns https://www.newegg.com/pine-gray-asus-zenbook-ux325ea-ds51-mainstream/p/N82E16834235716?Item=N82E16834235716 https://www.newegg.com/ink-black-msi-summit-b14-a11m-077-mainstream/p/N82E16834155671?quicklink=true Thanks for the help, Tim

I'll be going for either the XPS 13 plus or the Asus. Waiting to see the LTT video to help make a decision but what do you all think? I won't use it for gaming much if at all but if value for money the Asus is the better machine and has a dedicated gpu then so be it. Let me know what you think.

Hi. I've been trying to compare the three laptops and can't decide. There's also not much comparisons between these two. Trying to choose between Razer blade stealth (i7 skylake with 8gb ram and 128 gb) vs Dell XPS 13 (i5 kaby lake or sky lake, 8gb model) and Surface pro 4 (i5 skylake, 8gb model). I'm mainly choosing between the razer (for its good hardware) vs the dell (for the battery life and decent hardware). Any advise. I'm trying to take everything into consideration, I'll be using this mainly for productivity and school. So battery life is kinda important, but is it worth giving it up for that skylake i7-7200u? P.S. If you think Dell is better, should I choose kaby lake (940 usd) or skylake (855usd). Is the price difference worth it? Thanks!!

Hello Everyone I'm looking for a lightish programming laptop. Total budget and country of purchase: $800 - $1500(including Taxes) Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 not required. Good battery preferred. How important is weight and thinness to you? DONT care about thinness but it should be lightish say under 2kg for 15-inch screen size. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows and Linux Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. light Gaming. College(Comp Sci). Maybe light photo and video editing. MX150 should suffice however a 1050 is much appreciated If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? League of Legends(max) and Overwatch(high) at 60fps at least. Might play some other games. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Needs to be sturdy enough to last minimum 3 years. Good keyboard IS A MUST. Touchscreen, a fingerprint reader is a bonus, optical drive not required. THE laptop either must have 16GB ram or should be user upgradable to 16 GB in the future Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Something that doesn't look like a transformer please. Also make sure it is readily available in the usa. the budget is up to 1400 USD before taxes so say around 1500 USD MAX I was Considering the Specter x360 15 http://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/hp-spectre-x360-15-bl152nr Dell XPS 15 i5 7300HQ one http://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-laptops/xps-15/spd/xps-15-9560-laptop/dncwxb1641sv2 On other hands the Asus UX330 Is a good option but can't find it with 16 gigs of Ram https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075N1YHVK?ref_=ams_ad_dp_ttl (I am ready to drop the GPU for the Asus mode I think its worth it ) ACER Swift 3 looks to be bang for the buck but concerned about reliability https://www.amazon.com/Acer-i5-8250U-NVIDIA-GeForce-SF314-52G-55WQ/dp/B0746P25QX/ref=pd_lpo_vtph_147_tr_t_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=4RRBDK8ZJ2F7PS7FBHTW Some other which come to mind are the Yoga 720 ( concerned about battery and heat management) Some other Acer laptops (Concerned about build quality) I am also open to business laptops like the Thinkpads.

The 12" Macbook right now (over $1000 for a cafe computer) is overpriced, but the Macbook Air was also very expensive yet laptop current laptops are inspired by its influence. The design of the 12" Macbook gets the laptop aspect of laptops right: very portable for public use, beautiful display for streaming, good battery life, quality speakers (so headphones aren't needed), responsive trackpad (so a mouse isn't needed). For ultrabooks, those things matter much more than being able to game or use Photoshop. There are legitimate criticisms, but in a few years from now Apple (or companies like Asus) will improve upon it and technology will accommodate laptops like it much better. M processors will get faster. A 1080p laptop camera isn't undesignable Wifi is getting better and ethernet will not be needed for a laptop HDMI will be dead for non-gaming tasks once streaming improves Multiple USB ports will make less sense for non-pro users as SSD and cloud capacities increase.

Hi there guys, I've been looking for a laptop for a while, I just cant come to a decision. I've been looking at the MSI GE62 pro, MSI GS63 Stealth Pro, Dell XPS 13/15, Razer Blade, etc. I just can't come to a decision on price VS performance and I was hoping you guys could share your opinions. Going to be using it primarily for average school work, however I am a frequent PC gamer on desktop and would like some capability. Concerns weighted towards build quality, portability (doesn't have to be insanely small), graphics Thanks so much!

Finding Mid-tier Ultrabooks in Australia So after a good couple hours of research i've collapsed and come to you all for some advice. I've been on a long winded quest to find a 13' ultrabook for my uni friend and come up empty handed. The requirements are simple, good battery life, alright specs, somewhere in the i5 region and around 8GB of RAM should do her fine, as long as it isn't over $1700 AUD. Now you might be thinking, that's run of the mill, why would any informed person need help? For the exact same reason that I haven't already told her to buy an LG gram. Because nothing is available in bloody Australia. Anyone got any reccomendations? Links appreciated.

Hey guys! Just wanted to know your suggestions, about gpd p2 max. I recently was thinking of buying an ultra thin laptop, for daily use, and came to the conclusion that only things i do is work, such as powerpoint, word, exel, a little bit of gaming not too hardcore (i have a desktop for that) and mostly watching videos. (Sometimes work with adobe premiere or photoshop) So i wanted to get a decent ultrabook, that will give me all necessary features: good battery life, good speed, all needed essentials, such as webcam, ports. As i was looking around, i didn't want expensive like xps 15 which in uk, base price is 1300£ and it is a bit too thick. Couldn't find anything great, so found this gpd, but concerned if it will be a good choice, very skeptical about such pc with intel m3. Thank you for suggestions)

Hi, Read the laptop RTX edition guide but I'm still stuck on a laptop choice. I was set on getting the Asus Strix Hero III 15 inch laptop but I didn't see it on the list and Asus told me the i9 isn't available in the US so I started doubting myself. I'm looking for a laptop that light (I travel a Lot), and Powerfull enough to do some like graphic design and then game on the side. Games I play are Wow, Destiny, and borderlands 3 soon ? Any help would be appreciated!

I'm looking for an ultrabook, but I have a budget of $1000. I live in Panama so laptops like the X1 Carbon, the Surface or the Grams are very hard to get. I got someone who can sell me a Dell XPS 13 with the i7-8550U, 4k touch display, 16 Gb of RAM and 1 TB SSD for $900. That laptop have only 3 months of used, Do you think that is the best option for the price? Or is there any better thin and powerful laptop than this? Thanks for the help.

Gaming Computer vs More Portable Notebook
JamesHenry posted a topic in Laptops and Pre-Built Systems
Hi, I currently own a surface pro 4, with and i5 and 8GB of RAM. Sadly I often find myself irritated. Edge crashes constantly, and auxiliary browsers such a firefox consume a lot of the computer's ressources, even when close to idle, and tend to cause the fans to activate when watching a youtube video. I've also recently taking up light programming in R, and I use LateX regularly for projects. I'm looking for something that runs smoothly, is still reasonably portable (i.e. not a 17" 3kg gaming laptop), but I am willing to sacrifice some portability to not end up having a computer that constantly overheats, crashes or cannot keep up with what I consider rather simple tasks. 8 GB pf RAM seems to have become marginally low, even for non-gaming task, since while idle almost half of the RAM is already consumed. My Price point would sit around 1000$, give or take and the screen doesn't need to be more than 1080p, and ideally wouldn't be below. I'm interested in the Lenovo ThinkPad L380, with an 8th gen i7, 16GB of Ram and 512GB SSD, at around 1099$. However, I saw an Asus gaming computer for around the same price a month ago on sale. My question therefore would be, which would be the best option. The Lenovo would obviously be much more compact, at 13" and lighter. But I'm also very concerned about cooling and the potential loss of component quality of performance because of the way they pack everything very tightly in ultrabooks. Thanks in advance for any advice- 10 replies

Hi all. It's been almost 2 years and I still can't find a laptop of my liking and with the recent eGPU concept, I cannot get it off my mind. I've been looking everywhere for a relatively thin and light laptop to carry around as a daily driver, with a decent enough muted appearance to take to work but still be a capable gaming machine at home when plugged into an eGPU but most models I find end up with cooling issues and CPU throttling when under heavy, prolonged CPU loads. My question is...What are the known ultrabooks with a decent performance when plugged into a thunderbolt 3 eGPU? The ones I checked out so far and are off the list because of various CPU issues: LG Gram 2018, Dell XPS 2018/2019, Lenovo Ideapad 730S, Lenovo Yoga 730, Acer Spin 5, Eluktronics N131WU. The only laptop I know that works well with an eGPU seems to be the Razer Blade Stealth so far but I can't stand the brand because of the lack of support outside of the US. It doesn't have to be an ultrabook but at least a decently portable notebook. I'd appreciate your thoughts. Thank you.

So in the 8th gen, usually the U series of processors were used in most ultrabooks, at least thats what I saw when browsing ultrabooks, but in the 9th gen, I do not see the U series of CPUs, so what 9th gen CPU are they using in the latest ultrabooks?

i'm currently looking for a cheap tablet-style device to use for taking notes and other quick things that i'd rather not whip out my laptop for. performance (past not struggling to load up the OS and maybe a couple of browser tabs) doesnt matter much. i'd preffer it to be a 10inch ish tablet with a keyboard case, either windows or android and of course amazing battery life. bonus points for being rugged, having decent storage and having wacom's pen tech built into the touch display. currently im looking at the samsung tab active pro (currently in prerelease where i live for 600 euro's, theres no price for a keyboard yet.) or a microsoft surface go (secondhand, 419 for the 128gb model + pen, and another 60 ish euro's for the keyboard). so this is my callout to all the tech nerds here, which of these two would you recommend? or should i check some other options? which other device would you personally pick for this task?

I am interested in buying an ultrabook with i7 and 16GB ram, I will use it for browsing, watching movies and youTube videos and programming in VS or pycharm or eclipse either for creating desktop applications or backend stuff and also machine learning (so for training the datasets I will generally use servers in the univ. but sometimes I end up training on my laptop for few hundreds of iteration which take like fews hours, but not complete training). So far the only options I have where I am staying (Italy) is Asus ZenBook UX430UN-GV030T and Dell inspiron 7370. Both cost more or less 1100 euros. My question is can either of the laptops or an ultrabook in general handle programming? I know with i7 8550U and 16GB ram they can run mostly any code smoothly, but I am worried about the size of the laptops. Will notebooks like these with such small form factor cause thermal throttling (due small thickness being unable to dissipate heat) is my main concern. I want a portable laptop without compromising performance and without heating issues or thermal throttling.

Hi Guys I'd like to buy an ultrabook and Ive been reading a lot of reviews about XPS 13 and Razer Blade Stealth, which are my favorites, however looks like these Ultrabooks have several issues like coil whine/fan/noises/heating (XPS 13), charging/screen/wifi issues/heating (Razer). I would appreciate if you could share your personal reviews and comments/opinions about these machines/issues... If you think it is not a good idea to buy these Ultrabooks, could you please suggest some alternatives? I am looking for ultrabooks with at least i7 (quad core would be great) 16gb ram, ~256gb SSD and premium build quality. I don't care about a dedicated graphics card. My budget is USD1700 and I am planning to buy it in the next week's in NYC. Thank you so much!

Hi, y'all, Tony here. I am trying to get a new laptop and I wonder if there are any notebooks that run AMD processors inside. It must be like an ultrabook, a touch screen will be nice. I do not know a lot in AMD Ultrabooks, so I want some help. I want in sub $400, an ssd, 4gb or ram and at least a quad core. Any suggestion? Oh and it must be like an ultrabook

So I'm starting Uni next year in the fall - not 2016, but 2017 - and I'd like a recommendation for a laptop for some some on the go work. Obviously a razer and a macbook are a bit overpriced, but the student discount for the stealth is a pretty nice steal considering it's $400, and I have family that works at apple retailers so I can get a significant price cut on on prebuilt/custom systems (though I'm probably only going to get a macbook if they refresh the line next year.) Are there any alternatives around the same price point that people would recommend? I'm not going to use it for gaming, except for hearthstone, and maybe overwatch on incredibly low settings if it'll handle it. I have a rig at home that I use for video editing/dedicate gaming.

I was looking around for the perfect ultrabook candidate for the new external graphics cards and was shocked to find that the poster child (Razer blade stealth) for it was a bloody dualcore! There is almost no option for a quadcore that doesn't then have a bigger screen, dedicated graphics and weigh more. Does a ~13inch light weight quadcore with thunderbolt 3 via type C, integrated graphics and decent battery life exist? If the Quadcore uses too much power could you turn off 2 cores when on battery power to solve power consumption? There is software that can allow overclocking without a reboot, so could not cores be disabled temporarily?

Next years ultrabooks are bound to be better. So i need advise is it worth waiting for 2016 ultrabook are there big innovation soon to come in 2016 ultrabooks or should i just get the XPS 13 now. Please let me know what you all think.

Okay, judging by sales figures tablets sales are falling, and I just had this thought. If tablets are getting replaced by larger smartphones, won't this mean smartphones will be the only devices we will ever need. But, smartphones won't go over 6'' (unless someone makes a jeans pocket that is able to hold huge devices!), and we still a large screen for productivity and this means that laptops are here to stay. But, I heard laptops are losing sales too. So, what the heck is happening?

Is there an Acer Ultrabook that has a 4th gen i5, 1920X1080 res, IPS panel? I am looking for one for classes this fall but I am not looking for an Aspire S7 392 price tag. I say acer cause they probably have the most ultrabooks out that have the 4th gen CPU in them.

I am looking to replace an 8 year old HP laptop, and the new Asus zenbooks are extremely intriguing to me. I know that Linus sometimes does laptop reviews, but what do you guys think the chances are of him getting these products?
