  1. Hey! So I know that UEFI is the new fancy bios with all the fancy gui and secure boot and stuff. Legacy bios is the old one for MBR systems. However, I read that there is a performance difference when installing an Operating System from UEFI bios and LEGACY bios. Is this true? If yes, which one should I go for while installing the OS?(Windows, Linux dualboot)
  2. I bought an old Latitude E5430 of Ebay but it has a BIOS Password i've already tried [snip] and and resetting the cmos but it didn't work, can anyone help me?
  3. This Guide is for Updating the Various Components of a Windows Computer and is Intended for: Those who have a fresh install of Windows on their computer and haven't installed any drivers yet Contrary to popular belief, a default Windows install will NOT update all of the things listed in this guide Those who are trying to troubleshoot issues. This is a great place to start and rule out the simple things quickly. Those who want to see if they have anything out-of-date This guide does include links to update the OEM software on laptops MANUAL METHOD (Motherboard) This is for those who want to avoid installing the all-in-one updating software from motherboard manufacturers. Skip to step 4 if you want to go that route. For updating desktop motherboard drivers (for laptops, skip to step 4 and select your brand) Run the following commands in PowerShell to obtain your motherboard model and UEFI version Get-CimInstance -ClassName Win32_baseboard | Format-List -Property Manufacturer,Model,Name,SKU,Product Get-CimInstance Win32_BIOS | Format-List -Property SMBIOSBIOSVersion,Manufacturer,Name,Version Search for your exact motherboard model from the report in your favorite search engine. Once you find the manufacturer website and your specific motherboard, click on the Support tab (NZXT downloads are on the bottom of the page of the motherboard product description). Sometimes there are two support tabs, so look for the smaller support tab. Download the latest drivers from the Support tab and install them DO NOT SKIP INSTALLING THE CHIPSET DRIVER Manufacturer Driver Updater Apps and/or Driver Links DO NOT SKIP INSTALLING THE CHIPSET DRIVER Acer: Where to download Acer Care Center Asrock: Asrock Live Update and App Shop Asus: Armory Crate Biostar: List of Motherboards (use their Aurora app linked under individual motherboards to auto-update them) Dell: Dell Support Assist Gigabyte: Gigabyte Control Center Hewlett-Packard (HP): HP Support Assistant Intel: Download Intel Drivers and Software Lenovo: Lenovo Vantage MSI: MSI Center NZXT: Gaming Motherboards Razer: Software and Firmware Updates for Razer Systems Graphics Drivers from the GPU manufacturers AMD Drivers: AMD Drivers and Support | AMD Intel Drivers: Download Intel Drivers and Software Nvidia Drivers: Official Drivers | NVIDIA (Installing GeForce Experience is not required.) While it is possible, this guide does not cover how to remove manufacturer-tailored drivers and replace them with the latest drivers from the GPU manufacturer. If you don't do this step, there's a small chance that you will be prompted for your BitLocker recovery key, and if you cannot retrieve it from your Microsoft account... 4. I was changing settings in my BIOS (I believe it was changing something from Legacy to UEFI, trying to change it to Secure Boot and enabling some Intel Platform something stuff), restarted my computer, and now I have no display and my PC is turning on and off repeatedly. I unplugged the computer, took out the CMOS battery for 10 minutes, plugged it back in and still same result. Used screwdriver to connect 2 CLR_CMOS pins, plugged the Power On plug (thats going from i believe switch button) onto these 2 pins and held switch button for like 30 seconds. After putting back the Power On plug back into its place i tried booting my pc up again. It went into the cycle again however at the first time after starting it i heard few beep sounds (at the rate of around 1 beep per sec). I also tried taking off my RAM, putting it back in etc.and still nothing. Im pretty sure that its not PSU's fault because everything seems to get power. What May be causing the problem and how can I solve it? Cpu: i5-7400 CPU cooler: stock one Mobo: GA-B250M-DS3H Ram: 1x samsung 8gb 2rx8 pc4-2400t Hdd: 2 TOSHIBA 500gb i dont know the exact model Gpu: RX 480 8gb Gigabyte PSU: silentum pc VERO L1 500W Chasis: i dont know the exact model and I cant find its name anywhere. 5. Hi all - this is a weird one. I have a ASRock B550M Pro4 motherboard, with a Ryzen 7 5700X and GeForce RTX 3060. My primary monitor (1080p) is connected with DisplayPort. I've noticed that when I boot into an OS through the builtin UEFI boot menu (F11 key), UEFI applications, such as the Windows Boot Manager menu, systemd-boot, and the Linux framebuffer console (efifb), display in full 1080p. When I set the boot order and don't use the boot menu, however, these screens display in 800x600. I have tried using rEFInd. In all cases, rEFInd itself is 1080p, but when I select an OS, the resolution changes based on whether I used the boot menu to select rEFInd beforehand or not. I can force the Linux framebuffer to use 1080p with a kernel argument, but this does not help for the boot manager or encryption password entry screens, which seem to be always dependent on me using the boot menu. What's going on - has anyone seen this before? Is there a way to make these use 1080p in all cases as well?
  6. Hi, my cpu i5-4670k,cpu cooler-Hyper 212X , gpu - Asrock rx 7800xt challenger oc, mobo- gigabyte z87x-ud3h, bios version F10b, corsair ram 4x4gb @1600 mhz dual channel, Crucia MX 500 500gb ssd,windows10, Hi, in my bios default setting, boot option is set to UEFI and legacy, can this cause any issue, should i set it to UEFI only?
  7. I have an acer laptop and I can't get it to boot anything other than Windows, Ubuntu etc. I have gone in to the UEFI many times and I have disabled TPM and Secure Boot but it still says secure boot fail. Is there any way or should I just give up.
  8. This might a bit too of a niche topic for most of Linus Tech Tips audience, but some still might find it interesting. There will be a coreboot hackathon on 17th of November (in 3 weeks), in Bochum, Germany. It will last over the entire weekend (until Sunday 19th). FYI: coreboot is open-source firmware (BIOS or UEFI) replacement Free snacks and drinks during the entire period. Number of tickets is limited. Ordinary ticket costs 20 Euro, for students only 10 Euro.
  9. Sorry for making an account just for this, I figured someone here would know and HP is out of hours so won't currently help me, not that they're useful anyway. I was trying to get my workstation to boot into BIOS. I tried F10, booting through recovery and CMD but none worked. I pressed the CMOS button assuming this would revert BIOS settings and let me boot into it. I turned the machine back on, pressed F10 and was shown a "Secure Boot" screen. It reads "A request has been made to change this system's secure boot configuration. which may affect the secure boot keys and/or may disable secure boot." "Please type in and enter the below number for authorization" My problem is that each time I've booted I've typed the number and pressed enter, nothing has happened. I've tried in both front and rear IO USB ports and don't have a backup keyboard but I know the keyboard is working. A few HP posts with no solutions can be found below for the issue and some context, I'm not certain how it's happened. https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Boot-and-Lockup/Stuck-on-secure-boot-authorization-number-during-boot/td-p/6026803 https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Boot-and-Lockup/Stuck-on-secure-boot-screen/td-p/6893555 https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Boot-and-Lockup/Stuck-on-secure-boot-authorization-number-during-boot-using/td-p/6437504 https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Unanswered-Topics-Notebook/Secure-boot-issue/td-p/7998868 Attached and below is a photo of my monitor. I don't know how to get past this, didn't request it in the first place and now can't boot without being shown this screen meaning I can't use my PC at all. Any solutions would be incredibly welcomed. Thanks so much.
  10. DISCLAIMER: I'M NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR DAMAGED DEVICVES Though I have been using this for months now without issue. Just be sure to modify your throttlestop PL1/PL2 accordingly. PL1 of 36W (set, actual power is ~75W) and PL2 of 55W (set, actual power is ~100W) is the highest I would go and even then you should adjust turbo window accordingly. The reason I have PL1 set high is it will only stay at that on no dGPU load which will give better performance is stuff like VMs or other heavy CPU tasks, when the GPU is running it will default to '22W' which is now 45W. And theoretically the tablet should throttle itself to prevent damage even if you set crazy high power limits. Also, sometimes the power limit doesn't apply when rebooting with the charger connected so it's advised to disconnect it and reconnect it after a reboot just to be sure the '22W' (which is now 45W) stays in place. (This was fixed in BIOS 315) THIS IS FOR SPECIFICALLY THE 'ZE' (i9) VARIANT ON BIOS 312/315, It can be done on other models/BIOS but it's a more complicated process, here is where that process and all the information I got came from: https://www.reddit.com/r/FlowZ13/comments/vplgfg/tutorial_compeletely_get_rid_of_the_dumb_cpu/ Asus has this weird power throttling thing on the Z13 that causes the CPU to be stuck at 22w under combined load (like while in a game). This causes performance to tank in certain games and be inconsistent in others. How this works: The values you are modifying are the IMON slope and IMON Offset, these values are responsible for keeping track of CPU power draw, by modifying these you can trick the system into thinking it's pulling less power than that it actually is. Requirements: FAT32 Flash drive (or a flash drive you don't mind formatting) GZ301ZE Flow Z13 on BIOS 312 Setting up the Flash drive (If you already have a FAT32 formatted flash drive skip to step 5) (If you have a flash drive that's 32GB of less just right click it in file explorer and select 'format' and choose FAT32 from the File System dropdown, then skip to step 5) 1. Open disk management (WIN + X followed by K opens it BTW) 2. Find the flash drive in the list of disks 3. Right click the volume (blue bar) and select 'Delete Volume...' (THIS WILL WIPE THE DRIVE) You should see the drive as 'Unallocated' now 4. Right click the Unallocated space and select 'New Simple Volume', A wizard will open, press Next. Enter '500' for the volume size & hit next: Choose whatever letter & hit next: For File system select 'FAT32' from the dropdown and leave everything else as default, click next then finish: Now you should see a portion of the drive is a FAT32 partition: 5. Extract the attached zip (EFI-SHELL.zip) to the flash drive, make sure the contents are on the root of the drive, not in a folder called EFI-SHELL: (You might not see System Volume Information, that's fine. I have show system folders on) 6. With the flash drive plugged into the Z13 reboot and press F2 to get to the BIOS, then hit F8 to open the boot menu. select 'UEFI: *whatever the flash drive is*' 7. Once you're at the EFI Shell prompt type RU.EFI & hit enter 8. Once it loads hit any key to dismiss the welcome prompt 9. Hit ALT + '=' to open the list of variable names, scroll down until you see 'CpuSetup' 10. Hit enter on CpuSetup and you should see a screen that looks like this: 11. Hit CTRL + FN + Down Arrow to go down a page (the numbers on the side should change from 0000-00F0 to 0100-01F0) 12. Now it's time to enter the values from this table: I attached the spreadsheet I made that generates these values based off the desired TDP. 45W seems to be the highest you can go without having thermal throtting issues under sustained load (though the battery will drain while on the charger). You can open the sheet for yourself and change the Desired TDP & use those values, the process is the same. (The spreadsheet also contains some other testing stuff as well that's not used) Use the arrow keys to move the cursor to each of the Bytes in that table (they are displayed without the '0x' in the top left highlighted in grey) Once you're at a value you need to change simply type in it's corresponding Value and hit enter Repeat this process until all the numbers in the table match the ones you've entered: 13. Once that is done press CTRL + W to write changes, dismiss the 'Updated OK' popup and hit CTRL + ALT + DEL to reboot. That's it. You're done. Power reporting will be incorrect because of how this works though, so remember that. Temperatures/Clock speeds will still report correctly and will be the best way of seeing if it worked.
  11. I'm trying to repurpose an old HP Z210 Workstation but I cannot get windows to install. If I install windows in UEFI mode it fails at the final part of setup (failed to upgrade computers boot configuration) If I install windows in Legacy mode it fails to boot (INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE) I've tried installing windows via hyper-v to the physical ssd and moving it over as well, then I get inaccessible boot device in UEFI mode as well (though It might be defaulting to legacy mode) The BIOS has basically 0 options, I can switch it from AHCI/RAID to IDE mode but I've tried both and neither worked. There's no option for Secure Boot or CSM/UEFI modes.... I've also tried resetting the BIOS to defaults with no luck. I found a document talking about installing UEFI windows 7 but it basically just says to make sure it's in AHCI mode and do the normall installation steps... I've also tried multiple ISOs including stock LTSC 2015 & 2021 (and windows 7 sp1) images both of which I know work. Any ideas on how to get windows going?
  12. Hello! The UEFI menu resolution of my motherboard seems to be 1920x1080, or lower. I see no option to change that to 3840x2160, so the menu is looking a bit blurry. My build is: •Motherboard: Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Master (rev. 1.0) - BIOS version F11. •Monitor: ViewSonic VP2768-4K (3849x2160p) - Connected through DisplayPort. •Video Card: Asus GeForce GTX 1050 Ti (4GB). Question: Is there a way to make the UEFI (BIOS) menu hi-DPI?
  13. I haven't been able to access my bios for the last few months. While frustrating I have needed this workstation for a project I am working on and didn't want to play around with it too much as the system seems to be working fine while in Windows. I've finished the project and now feel more comfortable troubleshooting, hopefully a solution can be found. In the past I would normal hit the Del key on boot and have no problem accessing the UEFI. Even with Fastboot enabled it was not a problem in the past. My first attempt to troubleshoot was disabling Fastboot which did not seem to fix the problem. I then attempted to boot into the bios using the Shift + Restart to open the Troubleshooting menu on boot. I was able to access the Troubleshoot menu and select Advanced then UEFI Firmware Settings which according the Microsoft website should have put me in the UEFI, instead, it immediately booted to desktop. My last thought was to update the BIOS hoping that would correct any issues. I normally would do this with a USB drive in the UEFI but since I am unable to access the UEFI I tried using the ASUS AI Suite (The board does not support ASUS USB bios flashback). The update checker in the AI Suite showed no new updates (currently 3302), but there was a newer version on the ASUS website (4201). I downloaded the CAP file and manually selected it in the updater. The update appeared to process normally showing complete pending a restart. I agreed to the restart and the system booted correctly. However, upon checking, the bios is still 3302. My guess is the same issue preventing me from booting into the UEFI prevented the bios update from completing. I have thought of just wiping the bios and starting clean, but the X570ws does not natively support AMD 5000 series CPU's. I was able to update the bios on the board originally with an older AMD CPU that I have since sold. I am completely stumped at this point. Any help would be greatly appreciated. 14. Hi Guys So i am trying to figure out why my asus h310m-r 2.0 bios does not have a Gui.On the asus website it shows that it does, however i only get the old looking bios where you have to navigate with the keyboard only. I have updated the bios, but still no luck. Any advice?
  15. I am attempting to install win 11 on my fairly modern PC, but I am unable to satisfy PC health check. It thinks my Secure boot is disabled. Even Unsupported. I have updated my bios to the latest version and have tried to find any BIOS settings that should have any effect. But no success. Does anybody have any idea what's the issue or what are the correct settings. Sys info lists BIOS mode as legacy ( i haven't figured out how to change that) and Secure boot as unsupported. 16. My Samsung M.2 980 Pro SSD isn't being recognized by UEFI BIOS. The problem is that this is for a new build and I do not have access to the software to update or check my SSD. Without my SSD being recognized I am not able to install Windows 11 to my PC. If anyone has any knowledge of this issue it would be much appreciated if you can help come up with a solution.
  17. Hello wonderful ltt forum! I came today around, to ask you guys for some good combinations of voltages and clocks on my cpu. Pc config. : CPU: Ryzen 7 2700 GPU: Nvidia RTX 3060 ti RAM: 8x2 GB, 3000 MHz (crosair vengeance) Motherboard: Asus B450-plus w/ uefi Bios (ver. 1804) Storage: 1 ssd m.2 250gb, 1 ssd data 500gb, 1 hdd 2tb; I have a new thermalpaste comming, is the thermal grizzly kryonaut, and I want to make a spring clean on my pc, excluding windows. For now I managed to clock my cpu from 3.4-3.2 GHz (it was a prebuild ant it was capped at 3.4 GHz) at 3.9 and around 1.375 v, I haven't done anything else to voltages or clocks, I just managed to make a stress test at that of 1 min which the max power was 120w with constant 60c° I had a previous attempt at 4 GHz with 1.3v ant it failed miserably. So I closed the pc from button (ik it isn't ok) entered bios and lowered the clocks and increased the voltage, stress tested 1 min and it worked out fantastic. If I haven't mentioned, I have an Artic Esprtos duo 34 cooler which has a rated w cooling of 200 Ish W, the only real problem would be the power supply but il let that to you. 18. Recently I rebuilt my system to swap my motherboard and upgrade my CPU. (MSI PRO Z790-P WIFI and I7-12700K) The system POSTs fine, I have good thermals, and everything is detected, but no matter what I do, my original boot drive (XPG SX8200 M.2) will NOT show up as an option in the boot order. I've noticed my boot mode is greyed out, and locked into UEFI. I think that's the issue, but no matter what I try I absolutely cannot get it to change. I even turned off secure boot, but that didn't unlock the option... I'd really prefer to just be able to boot into my M.2, is there a way through this? (I know in theory I could just make another UEFI-friendly Windows install on a different drive, but I have data on all of my drives :/) OS: Windows 10 Pro 64 bit (I would tell you the version, but I can't check it right now for obvious reasons) CPU: I7-12700K (Base clock) RAM: 4x8 DDR4 LPX Vengance 3200mhz GPU: Gigabyte AORUS Elite RTX 3060 Mobo: MSI PRO Z790-P WIFI Storage: ADATA XPG SX8200 PRO M.2 1TB SK Hynix Gold S31 SSD 500GB Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM HDD 2TB BIOS:E7E06IMS.110 (09/01/2022)
  19. Hey, Legacy or UEFI: is either better for unRAID (i.e. more stable)? Disregard system support, is one better than the other?
  20. Got a little problem. I can't access the UEFI / BIOS anymore, unless I reset the CMOS. The BIOS splash screen does not appear during boot-up, even tho fast boot is disabled. I have never the opportunity to even press F2 is I wanted. And if I hold it down during boot-up, it simply won't boot. If I hold down the shift-key while clicking restart in Windows 10 to get into the advanced settings and try to get into the UEFI from there, the PC simply end up in a boot loop. Interestingly enough I had this happen on another AsRock X570 board and with a Ryzen 2700 aswell. I wonder if my GPU plays a role in this or even my boot SSD. XMP and Thunderbolt 3 are enabled. CSM is disabled. Specs: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X AsRock X570 Taichi 2x 16GB 3000Mhz CL15 EVGA GTX 1080 Corsair MP300 1TB (C:) , Samsung PM9A1 2TB (D:) beQuiet super power or whatever 11 Platinum 750w (Same problem with an AX760i)
  21. cannot install reviOS A320M gigabyte turned off CSM disabled secure boot and fast boot set the Rufus options as NTFS and partition scheme to GPT(my disks are GPT) clicking on the USB drive in BIOS just boots into the previous boot manager also tried FAT32 file system with rufus no help the last pic shows this and just reboots into my GRUB bootloader have attached the BIOS pics for reference i also tried loading optimized defaults but no help
  22. Hi all, I have bought a "new" motherboard for my sister' pc, (Asus M5a97 evo r2.0) When it boots it ALWAYS checks the memory, meaning that it is always needed to press F1 to go to the bios (It does not checks the memory after reboot, just when the PSU switch is flipped for the first boot) and then to leave the bios otherwise it wont turn on. And it also starts as soon as I flip the PSU switch on! (this is very odd, there is no setting in the bios that indicates to boot right after it has power.) To me it looks like it has a modded bios on it, because if im right then this is NOT a ROG Asus motherboard, but it still has the Asus ROG logo when it boots, I reseted the bios through bios and with the cmos pins as well just to be sure it is reseted, and it still has the ROG logo (I thought it is just a modded logo but it turns out that it isnt). Also when I set something in the bios, like the ram frequency, it every time resets it to its defaults because of the memory check I guess (other settings remain to its modified values if I remember correctly). SO here is the "MAIN" problem, I tried to update/downgrade the bios to check if the memory checking bug remains or not, but guess what, I cant! When I try to update it, it gives me a popup (in the bios through EZFlash) "Security verification failed", and it wont update. I tried from 2301 to 2603 bios versions but the same error comes up everytime with all bios versions. (it is in .CAP extension, I even tried to rename it as the manual says, to "M5A97R20.CAP" but still has the same issue) I even tried bios flashback, plugged a usb into the "FLASH BACK port" or what ever is that, turned off the pc held the flash back switch (which is actually not a switch, just a button) for 3 seconds, it blinked and started to light green, so I turned it on and it didnt downgrade the bios (because I tried the 2601 version instead of 2603 just to see if it did anything or not) So my questions after all that, is all this is just a bios problem? Is this really just a modded bios problem? Or motherboard issue? (because I thought of that as well) Do I need to replace the bios chip? How can I make the board install the original .CAP file without errors? Do I need to mod the original one as well to install it? Sorry for asking and writing too much, but I just really want to get this board working.
  23. How do you know if your bios needs to be changed? And which one should you choose?
  24. I have a Fatal1ty B450 Gaming K4 with BIOS P3.40, the CPU is a 2600x. Any users of this board here? I've noticed that the option "Internet Flash-DHCP" is missing, not present. I'm pretty sure it was there after my last bios update, or did the update remove it? Also, I don't have the North and South Bridge folders, I can't find the Cool 'n' Quiet setting that I see on the manual.
  25. Whenever I try and boot into my PC's setup page in the BIOS/UEFI, it just shows a black screen... nothing else does this.
