  1. I've been trying to fix this problem for hours and I got nothing. Here what I got. Just bought 10g card (intel x550-T1). Put it in my server, installed the drivers from intel website ($ make install). Change the MTU to 9014 ($ ip link set "name" mtu 9014). With all that. It work. I get 10gb from it. transfer files like crazy. The end. Nope. Next day came by. I reboot the server and now its no longer works. The card is working as i did boot to windows and it work fine. Did a few commands to see whats going on and here what I got. $ /sbin/modinfo ixgbe | grep version version: 5.7.1 srcversion: 720A79B0425CF0E9E12CB84 $ sudo lshw -class network *-network UNCLAIMED description: Ethernet controller product: Ethernet Controller 10G X550T vendor: Intel Corporation physical id: 0 bus info: pci@0000:03:00.0 version: 01 width: 64 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: pm msi msix pciexpress cap_list configuration: latency=0 resources: memory:a2400000-a27fffff memory:a2800000-a2803fff memory:a2b00000-a2b7ffff memory:a2b80000-a2c7ffff memory:a2c80000-a2d7ffff *-network description: Ethernet interface product: Ethernet Connection (7) I219-V vendor: Intel Corporation physical id: 1f.6 bus info: pci@0000:00:1f.6 logical name: eno1 version: 10 serial: 04:d9:f5:1c:c9:e2 size: 1Gbit/s capacity: 1Gbit/s width: 32 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: pm msi bus_master cap_list ethernet physical tp 10bt 10bt-fd 100bt 100bt-fd 1000bt-fd autonegotiation configuration: autonegotiation=on broadcast=yes driver=e1000e driverversion=3.2.6-k duplex=full firmware=0.5-4 ip=10.0.0.79 latency=0 link=yes multicast=yes port=twisted pair speed=1Gbit/s resources: irq:130 memory:a4600000-a461ffff $ ip addr 1: lo: <LOOPBACK,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 65536 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN group default qlen 1000 link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00 inet 127.0.0.1/8 scope host lo valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever inet6 ::1/128 scope host valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever 2: eno1: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc fq_codel state UP group default qlen 1000 link/ether 04:d9:f5:1c:c9:e2 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff inet 10.0.0.79/24 brd 10.0.0.255 scope global dynamic noprefixroute eno1 valid_lft 601582sec preferred_lft 601582sec inet6 2601:2c7:9000:1ca0::92d2/128 scope global dynamic noprefixroute valid_lft 601583sec preferred_lft 601583sec inet6 2601:2c7:9000:1ca0:2d20:d890:2e27:29a3/64 scope global temporary dynamic valid_lft 206048sec preferred_lft 82761sec inet6 2601:2c7:9000:1ca0:c4d2:e05c:a976:c647/64 scope global dynamic mngtmpaddr noprefixroute valid_lft 206048sec preferred_lft 206048sec inet6 fe80::4ad4:9dea:ae69:e89b/64 scope link noprefixroute valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever It seem like the network card is "unclaimed" and has no logical name. try to use modprobe but got an error. $ modprobe ixgbe modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'ixgbe': Operation not permitted
  2. Hey everyone! After much headache with iommu groups, greedy Nvidia drivers not letting go of my secondary gpu, and finding a qemu configuration that actually boots, I'm completely stumped with getting out of this EFI shell using qemu. No matter which firmware I choose, aside from bios of course, which just hangs haha, I can't seem to get the windows install DVD to boot. I've tried going through the shell manually, selecting the FS1, and trying all of the .EFI files, after which I'm told to press any key to boot DVD, at which point I'm just hanging at a splash screen. Anyone have experience with this? I was inspired by Linus's build running all the PCs in his home, doing a little preliminary run with just one vm to figure things out.
  3. Installed linux mint today and configured it to run at the same resolution I was running my windows on via cvt 1366 768 xrandr --newmode "1368x768_60.00" 85.25 1368 1440 1576 1784 768 771 781 798 -hsync +vsync xrandr --addmode VGA-1 "1368x768_60.00"and then manually selecting the resolution and then manually selecting the resolution from settings. My problems are:- - Why does 1366 become 1368? - When I apply this resolution, the display goes a bit offscreen both on the right side and top. I've tried multiple linux distros (ubuntu, popos, manjaro - before settling on mint) and all of them have the same issue. The software is updated to the latest. Monitor auto adjustment doesn't work since my monitor's buttons don't work but this shouldn't be the issue as everything worked perfectly on windows without any adjustment. This resolution was working perfectly on windows and it's the max of the monitor as well. I'm attaching an imgur upload incase ya'll don't understand what I'm rambling about: https://imgur.com/gallery/r2xh2gX
  4. Hi, I am currently setting up a headless Ubuntu server 20.04 on my raspberry pi 4, After installing, i immediately setup static local ip with netplan configs, which worked. (i am using wired lan) However, after this it seems that the network goes to "sleep" when left unattended. I.E. If i were to establish an SSH connection with it, leave it for a minute, and then try to type on it, it freezes for a few seconds before responding to my input normally. Or if i deployed a simple rest server, and leave it for a while, then try to query a URL, then it still freezes for a few seconds before responding normally again. I checked syslog there seems to be no notable entry about eth0. Anyone experienced this?
  5. Summary A few months ago, there were reports that Google and most likely Valve were working on the support of the popular gaming platform Steam to come on Chrome OS. Discoveries have been made by 9to5google on how it will work and which Chromebooks it will first support. As of now it will start with the laptops that have the 10th gen Intel processor. ChromeOS supports running Linux apps under the project “Crostini”. It does this via running an entire Linux distribution in a virtual machine. 9to5google tracked a new project within the open-source code of Chromium called “Borealis”. This appears to be related to virtual machines for ChromeOS. It turned out to be a full on distribution, which unlike Crostini that is based on Debian, Borealis appears to be based on Ubuntu. Personal opinion I haven’t heard much about ChromeOS lately (actually nothing), but this is still a rather interesting yet unsurprising news, especially considering that Valve has made a lot of effort into the development of Proton and the fact there have been some reports of it being made earlier this year. Regardless, this feels rather welcoming to the OS, even though it’s marketing share is rather low afaik. Source https://9to5google.com/2020/07/01/chrome-os-preparing-steam-gaming-ubuntu/
  6. I can't find any related information or videos, how to do a multiseat step by step with a single GPU
  7. Hello everyone, We have a 3D Printing server running on windows to manage and send files to said printers. We have used a second PC running Ubuntu running MJPEG streamer to use as a webcam server to monitor the prints. We no longer have access to the second PC and have tried to run ubuntu as a VM on HyperV. We got Ubuntu working, but we don't know how to get access to the webcam plugging into the host PC to work. Thanks!
  8. I want to make a live usb of POP OS, so I can shutdown my windows and plug my usb and turn on Pop Os. So, I was watching this video (below), and he talks about bootable usb. But is that same as Live Usb / Portable Usb? If not please tell me a way to do it. Thanks! If you want to recommend, other os that's also good! I want a light weight os, easy to use, and easy to install apps. I might do light gaming depending on space. But it's mainly for a secure os with only work in mind. Thanks!
  9. While creating Live Ubuntu usb, what do I allocate more. Is persistent Storage partition the place where apps are installed Or that's the partition where ubuntu stays? Can I installed apps on shared Storage? I basically wanna know which is the "C:" drive for ubuntu. (*Shared is between windows and ubuntu)
  10. I gave my Live SDCard 8 GB of persistant storage, but is the 8gb already allocated or will it eat up the storage as I put files and change settings in Ubuntu? I used Rufus, so can I access files both in Windows and Ubuntu? I'm making a lot of ubuntu threads lately
  11. I followed the exact method mentioned in this video except I increased the persistant data to 4gb instead of 1gb shown in this video, so whats the problem? My drive has plenty of space left, 8gb or so...
  12. Hi there I just plugged in my UPS. However, it shows me that the battery is at 0%, plugged in and not charging. Unplugging the USB connection removes the battery widget. Do I need to enable something specific to make that widget work? Thanks in advance. Edit: I am running Kubuntu with an EATON UPS.
  13. I have an Asus transformer mini that I put Ubuntu on because I got tired of windows getting bogged down with it's background processes. It works pretty well, except I get what looks like some vertical screen tearing when watching videos in VLC and the native video player. It gets a little distracting, but it's a minor inconvenience at the end of the day. Still, any help would be appreciated.
  14. Today I installed Ubuntu in a old PC and everything was fine after I saw this. How do I fix it. Please help me. Pc specs. AMD athlon le 1600 Gpu. Nvidia GeForce 6150se 430 Quote me for more info
  15. Hello, I'm running Ubuntu 20.04 in dual boot with Windows 10. The way I have my setup configured is there's an SSD with both Windows and Ubuntu operating systems and a second drive with all my data on it, such as downloads and documents, etc. The disk is partitioned under NTFS scheme. Firstly, I was interested in simply mounting that drive automatically on boot, which I managed by going to disks > selecting the drive > edit mount options > mount at startup. However, a few days afterwards I found myself unable to edit any of the files in the mounted disk. The New Folder and Paste options are grayed out, I can neither save any new file nor edit previous ones. The user permissions showed the files belonging to "root" and so kept me from changing anything. After disabling auto-mount, the file permissions show my username instead of root now but I still can't edit anything. I have tried numerous solutions, many even successfully, but things revert back to same in a few days for no apparent reason. I would really like to know what's the issue here and how it can be fixed. Thanks! Update: Disabling fast startup allows for modifying the files, but they are still associated with root user. However, I would appreciate a workaround whereby I don't have to disable that option.
  16. Hello. Today I installed a Ubuntu 20.04 LTS on my laptop and I have a problem with my wireless adapter. When I open the wifi window and try to connect to my home network. I can't see my wifi, but it shows all the neighbor wifi networks. I think it's probably bad firmware. I'm pretty much new to Linux and Ubuntu. My laptop has Qualcomm Atheros QCA9377 Wireless adapter. After using lspci, it outputs 02:00.0 Network controller: Qualcomm Atheros QCA9377 802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter (rev 31). Thank you for any help.
  17. Hello everybody I'm pretty new to Linux (running Kubuntu) and I've been trying to get a raid array to work for the past 2 days. I have 4 6TB drives that I'd like to use to create a raid 5 array. However, after creating the array, it vanished after a reboot. As for my current understanding after research, the array is not being assembled at boot. Is that correct? How do I fix my issue? I've attached a screenshot. Hopefully, this provides at least a bit information in order to troubleshoot. If you need anything else, please let me know. Thanks.
  18. Hey guys So i recently installed pop os on my pc & tried to install wine. It refused to install through pop shop. Then the command line method too failed. But i managed to install it through synaptic. But it doesn't work. I ran winecfg command & it shows up. But Windows apps don't work. So i tried to troubleshoot it, but still a fail. So guys, please help me configure wine.
  19. I am in the process of helping a friend install Ubuntu 20.04 on their unused laptop. It can live boot just fine but when a normal install is attempted a window appears telling me to disable Intel Rapid Storage Technology. Upon checking the bios, there didn't appear to be any option for Intel RST. The computer in question is an HP Pavilion 15-cs0xxx according to the bios. I unfortunately do not have physical access to this machine as they live in another state and I am attempting to help them over Discord. I'm a little confused here as I've never had to deal with this particular problem whilst installing Linux before. Anyone have any ideas of how to get past this? Thanks in advance.
  20. Hello I want to make a small home made server(cloud) and trued using the Linux Ubuntu server but men idk what to do after installation. So some help will be appreciated
  21. Hello everyone, So i am having this problem for very long time. Every time i start the system, after some time there are frame drops and stutters after every 30 seconds and this happens everywhere like when watching videos, scrolling, etc. It pretty annoying and i cant find any proper and reliable solution for it. I have attached the screenshots of system monitor and inxi -Fxz for reference. A help in need is highly appreciated. Fix 1: I also tried systemctl disable system76-power now the stuttering is less frequent and there are no obervable cpu usage spikes. Also if you require other info please let me know. P.S. : The system monitor screenshot is before the Fix i applied.
  22. Hi Friends. So I have an old laptop An HP 15-d027ca. Dinosaur. Only use it for youtube. Windows 10 is alright but only having 1Ghz is getting rough so gave linux a try. I can boot into Linux from a USB no problem. Runs perfectly with no issues. I wanted to run it alongside Win10 but was having issues so wiped the drive and am going to keep it strictly linux. I started with xubuntu but ran into an issue installing grub. Failed install. So tried lubuntu and it worked good enough so tried to install that. Here is a screenshot of whats happening I've tried manually creating partitions(found some people doing different partitions than others so tried both combinations). I let the installer wipe the drive and create the partitions its itself. Always get the same error. I went into the BIOS and played with every possible setting. Changing legacy support, secure boot, virtualization technology. Any possible thing until I exhausted all options. The BIOS is lacking in settings. I paid $250 for this laptop 6 years ago so it's minimal. There's tutorials about how to set it up to dual boot but now that I wiped the drive there's not much for this issue on a clean install. I tried 2 different USB's and 2 different iso's two times each one in case something was messed up when I created them but get this error every time. Does anyone know what this means? I'd be all for trying a different distro if this error would go away and it'd be easier. All I need is firefox, and the ability to use add ons with it. I'm just not sure if this will be a problem with all linux software or maybe just this one. For what I do I could just run it off a USB but I'd end up snapping it off one day while it's plugged in lol. Any help would be awesome.
  23. So, the background of it is really long, but basically due to wide system corruption on my local plex vm, I had to migrate it to a new server, and decided that this time i will use deluge as my torrent client, and not utorrent... mind you that the system corruption has been going for about two to three months now, since a power outage, and i did anything in my ability to try and rescue the server itself for the last 3 months, so i did not really used utorrent... So, the way it was set up on my old server, and is still set up now is that I have plex running on my ubuntu server (moved to container of ubuntu this time, but still...), with utorrent (now deluge) client running as well, with pia socks5 proxy set up, for... security reasons... Anyways, I just finished migrating all the data and setting up the plex server, and wanted to test the new client, went to set it up and try a test download to make sure its all working and playing well with eachother, but the torrent wont run, it recognize the files, and just wont run! After debugging and googling for a while I decided to contact pia to see if they have a solution for running vpn on headless ubuntu server, after the 'agent' told me there is a problem with the socks5 proxy for about a month and a week now, and this was her reply!!!!!!! "Actual operating system"?!?!?!?! Please tell me I'm not just geeking out here and being insulted in behalf of linux.. Thanks, Sagi, advanced system administrator of not actual operating systems...
  24. Nobody else seems to care about this. So i was a Ubuntu MATE user until I saw these issues, where I jumped ship and went to Manjaro MATE. There's a forum thread on https://ubuntu-mate.community where somebody else was having the same problems, so I tried it for myself and no matter what I do — no matter however many times I play with dkms, v4l2loopback-dkms, kernel headers, kernel modules et cetera, it flat-out doesn't work. Not even using modprobe to make v4l2loopback do something worked, whereas in Manjaro it works just fine after I install the headers for 5.6. I tried liquorix (currently 5.6) in Ubuntu as a hail mary to see if switching the kernel to something more current works. It's unsigned which means it wouldn't work with secure boot but even when I did get it going on my other laptop I am testing with, it fails to work. I tried the same instance of Ubuntu MATE with kernel 5.4 on my main rig, still doesn't work. Would anybody want to give Iriun Webcam or Droidcam a try on 20.04 with kernel 5.4 to see if this is a reproducible problem on your own hardware? And if it is, what's the fix?
  25. Hey guys, The last couple of days I’ve spent some time getting familiar with VirtualBox, Ubuntu etc since I’m setting up my first home server! I’ve successfully installed a couple of Ubuntu versions and started to use the terminal. I’m somewhat familiar with SSH / PuTTY and I can follow YT tutorials, but I’m a Linux n00b. First few days was painful, but im starting to like Linux:) Server use cases: NAS (FreeNAS?) Plex Media server NextCloud LAMP / Web server to run a wordpress website. This is mostly for testing, learning and setting up a simple home server. I would like to have a dedicated web server in the future. OS & VM: Windows 10 + VirtualBox Im currently running VirtualBox on Win10 (not activated yet). I haven’t testes out Hyper-V or VMWare yet, will probably do so in the future. Ubuntu 18 as VM. Hard drives: 128GB Samsung SSD being used for OS atm. (Bought used). 128GB x2 Kingston SSDs arriving soon in the mail (bought used also), for OS. I’m thinking RAID1. 500GB Maxtor 500GB Toshiba 200GB x2 WD 1TB WD drive - temporary media drive while testing. It will be replaced with a 8-16TB HDDs in the near future. 1TB WD drive that’s in a working WD MyBook Live NAS that is was thinking to have as a separate physical NAS inside the computer case, using a Ethernet cable since I’m using up all 6 SATA ports on my motherboard (needs to be changed out in the future + a SATA expansions card or raid controller maybe?) Some of the questions I have: Should I use the spare 128GB Samsung SSD for NextCloud, and setup auto backup to one of the old 200GB WD drives? Should I have a separate VM with Ubuntu for the NAS and Plex, or could both run in the same VM, in the same or two different Docker containers? Should I have all the VirtualBox machines on the OS SSD, and the NextCloud Virtual Disk Image on a separate SSD to not eat up the free space on the OS drive? What should I have in mind when setting up FreeNAS to let both Plex and NextCloud use the same hard drives, or is it better to set them up in separate VMs with their own HDDs? What HDD would you recommend for a NAS and Plex, someting like 10GB WD RED Pro or 16GB Seagate IronWolf Pro? I would start with one drive then add another of the same type for RAID1, then expand with more ini the future as needed. How important is to have ECC RAM? I would be using it to beging with but Im consider upgrading it later on. I’m hoping that somebody can send me in the right direction, so that I get the correct foundation / structure for the server. Thanks for all the help!
