Welcome everyone to my review of the Samsung U28D590D 4K monitor! Before I move to the discussing the physical appearance of the monitor and some of its controversial faults in that regard, I would like to say a couple of words about my usage scenario of the monitor as well as on what basis I am writing this review, in other words to what I will be comparing it. In my personal case I use my monitor(s) for two key things - work and play. In fact I spend almost 90% of my time during my computer. For once my study program at the university requires writing of long research papers, my work is designing magazines and flyers and whenever I am free I like to game on my computer - GTA IV and V, DOTA 2, Test Drive Unlimited 2, Crysis 3, CS 1.6 etc... Therefore, my monitor needs to be not only with fairly decent color reproduction capabilities, but also fast enough to keep up when I am playing some FPS games and fragging all the n00bs. Physical appearance and accessories: The monitor certainly looks beautiful in pictures, but it is even more impressive in person. Its big - 28'' and has a somewhat slim bezel, especially compared to my old LG monitor. The front and sides of the bezel is made of glossy plastic - black and silvery, respectively, while the back of the screen is brushed plastic, awesome to keep fingerprints out. The shininess of the bezel was a real concern for me, I really hate glossy plastic, because of its ability to get covered in dust exactly 2 sec after cleaning it with a microfiber cloth, however I am happily willing to forget it for one reason - it is completely black with no buttons, lights, just a simple, understated Samsung logo. The screen itself is not completely mat. Its a mix of gloss and mat, which works flawlessly and I really prefer over plain mat panels. Not only does it prevent glare quite effectively, but it also sharpens the contrast and makes everything much more realistic looking. Overall the quality of the monitor is pretty good... but the stand, oh this POS stand... I really couldn't care less that the monitor lacks a VESA mount, height adjust, pivot, or that it has no USB hub, I don't use these things, and they are irrelevant, however, my only question to Samsung is "Who the hell had the brilliant idea to make a thin stand from plastic and then cover it with shiny brushed plastic to imitate aluminum..." not only is it flimsy, and raises some serious concern about the possibility of the monitor falling, it just ruins the otherwise beauty of the product. My stand at least did not come warped like what I read that had experienced a lot of people with the earlier versions of U28D590D. The only ergonomic adjustment is tilt and for all I care its perfectly fine, since I always use my monitors completely vertically and not tilted at all. Connector wise, the monitor has pretty much all of the relevant connectors. Considering that it is a 4K screen Dual-link DVI and VGA are out of the question and the monitor comes with a two HDMI connectors, a DP 1.2 connector and plug for the external power brick. The HDMI's can be used to either individually paired with the DP or both of the at the same time, which creates the possibility for running picture in picture and picture by picture from a couple of external sources. The connectors themselves are easily reachable, which is definitely a point for Samsung, because no one likes fighting with the stand to plug their DC power on the bottom of a screen. The monitor comes with a power cord, a DP and a HDMI cable in the box, nothing too special. I would have liked to see a DP to mini DP cable included as my graphics card only has a mini DP connector. Monitor Performance Now this is not 4K performance, that will come later. Here I will discuss the performance of the panel, is there any perceivable input lag and the menu options. The Samsung U28D590D uses a 60Hz TN panel identical to the one in the Asus PB287Q, which as stated by Linus himself is one of the best TN panels by far. The color reproduction of the panel is good, but not ideal. However with some calibration it can easily reach the performance of a lower-end IPS panel. The viewing angles are an other story. While the side-to-side ones are stunningly good for a TN, looking the screen from a standing position, or even worse a lean back position is not a good experience. The menu is comprehensive and fast to navigate. Setting the monitor to standard with a bit increased sharpness to 64 and a brightness of 85 is what I have found to offer the best viewing experience in my opinion. While not offering a six-axis color adjustment like some of the higher-end VA and IPS monitors, the basic adjustments that are available are do the job. Setting red to 54 and leaving the other colors at 50 is what I found works best for me. In regard to gaming performance, the monitor supports 3 modes of response times - Standard, Faster and Fastest. The funny thing is that in the Fastest mode, there is some noticeable ghosting behind fast moving objects. Even just moving the mouse on the desktop causes a fairly easily visible black trail after it. I have personally not found any difference between the other two modes. They both offer good image quality with no perceivable ghosting. Gaming performance and everyday usability Using a 4K 28" screen for anything is amazing. I have seen that a lot of people advocate for using Windows Scaling, and I can see why. I use it at 150% on Windows 10 and it has been perfect so far. The only app that seems a bit blurry is Steam in small picture mode. Everything else like my AVG Antiviruse and benchmark software seems to respond quite well to Windows 10 scaling and is running great. Working on the screen is a delight. I am able spread my work in Adobe Illustrator and actually see two pages at a time and have also enough space for all of the additional stuff. being able to open two word documents, both at 100% zoom is also handy in case you don't have a secondary monitor. Now to gaming. Till my first try of this monitor, reading all of the reviews and seeing all benchmarks, I always though that what will actually be bottlenecking my gaming experience is the fact that my MARS GTX760x2 only has 2GB of effective VRAM, however this turns out to not be the case at all. While DOTA 2 and other older FPS games run perfectly smooth in 4K some newer ones like GTA V simply cannot. I tried running GTA V with 4K with everything else set on low and I was only averaging 35-40FPS with incredible stutters, while my VRAM usage was actually well bellow the 2GB mark. The same goes to GTA IV and the Witcher 3. Therefore I run my more demanding games in 1440p and everything has been great. You know how it is always said that whenever you scale back something on a monitor outside of its native resolution the image turns blurry and looks horrible? This is absolutely not the case with the U28D590D. Even in 1440p, the image looks crisp and when playing a game it also looks a hell of a lot better than on my old 23'' 1080p screen. Thoughts on 4K in mid 2015 Unlike a year ago when most 4K monitors where completely unattainable for the general consumer, now 4K is definitely a thing. Considering the fact that good 1440p IPS screens with 144Hz refresh rate are around the 600 bucks mark, and for the same price you can get a really nice 4K screen like the Acer S277 IPS, despite its only 60Hz refresh rate, I believe the latter is the more sensible solution. Even a not too high-end graphics card like mine, roughly with the performance of a GTX 970-980 I can get the mainstream games like DOTA 2 and Counter-Strike to run at max settings and the AAA titles at almost max settings on downscaled to 1440p. Windows scaling has also greatly improved with only a very small amount of apps actually having trouble with it. in my experience that was Steam in small picture mode, only. Whenever I launch it in big picture, it looks perfectly fine again. Conclusion Pros: - Amazing price (around 390 Euros here in the EU) - Surprisingly good TN panel with minor distortion - Good build quality (of the screen) - 4K at 60Hz, but form what I have tried mine goes up to 75Hz easy (didn't have enough time to play around with it though) Cons: - Although a good one, it is still TN and not VA or IPS - Stand is extremely flimsy and makes the monitor feel cheap - No VESA mount (I know a lot of people would be upset if I don't mention this as a con, even though I don't really care about it ) - Limited ergonomic adjustment (only tilt is available)

It's 28", boasts 1ms GTG pixel response times, and support for 1B colors... But is it really as perfect as it seems??

Hey guys this is my first post so i don't really know if it is in the right place or not sorry. but a few weeks ago my samsung U28D590D monitor started to act up having a line down the middle of the screen and on one side its darker than the other. it only did this some times but recently its stuck like that all the time. i thought it was my graphics card but the line is also there when i used my ps4 with it and my other monitor doesnt show any line. i also checked my Display port cord and changed it to hdmi but there is still a line.i have attached a photo of the problem and any help would be awesome. thank you so much
