So what's the real world impact on performance and endurance for an NVME drive used in an enclosure that doesn't support TRIM? Or is there any impact? LTT recently uploaded a "Handy Tech <$100" video that featured this: ORICO M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure, USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) to NVMe PCI-E M.2 SSD Case Support UASP for NVMe SSD Size 2230/2242/2260/2280(up to 4TB)-M2PV I looked up whether it supported TRIM, and an official answer from ORICO on the Amazon product Q&A was no. Two other answers from 3 years ago say that firmware from some other company named Plugable (or does ORICO just white label Plugable's products?), but seems sketch to use firmware for a different brand unless I know that ORICO just flips Pluggable devices. Besides, plug & play would be nice. For background: TRIM is a command with the help of the operating system can tell the solid state drive (SSD) which data blocks are no longer needed and can be deleted, or are marked as free for rewriting. I tried searching the forums and elsewhere, and it wasn't really clear other than these two broad takeaways: It will hurt performance if the SSD has to overwrite any leftover data from deleted files that hasnt been TRIMmed yet. It can hurt endurance because writing is handled differently in these circumstances. I don't expect exact stats here because I know that would depend on read vs write ratio, filesize, workload, etc. But it would be nice to be able to say in general how greatly or insignificanty TRIM or some form of SSD garbage collection helps. If I got an NVME enclosure, I have 2 different possible uses for it with my Windows PC: One on my NAS' USB port to put a spare NVME drive I have to work as a faster way to backup certain tiny files (docs, etc) that take forever with an HDD. Older backups may have to be overwritten within a few weeks since my default retention policy is 30 days, and the nvme drive may not be big enough for this specific backup. Gaming or game storage, where I may keep it (<80%) full of games, and I may move games from slower storage (like SATA SSD) to the nvme. Any differences in the effects of no-TRIM there? If we believe Crucial, then their firmware does active garbage collection independent of OS used to access the drive, and I would hope many other SSD makers do the same: So even if the enclosure doesn't support the TRIM command, then the SSD can handle it, so no worries right? Well, the enclosure actually has an auto sleep function, and I'm sure some others do too: So if auto garbage collection of an SSD is less frequent than auto sleep, then that collection isnt going to happen, and supposedly the enclosure in question is without TRIM. -
Hey guys, I recently got a GA-P55-UD for my backup PC and since I was rebuilding it and had two 120 GB SATA SSDs lying around, I decided to to run them in Raid 0, because 1) 120 GB is not a lot by itelf nowadays 2) questionable performance gains 3) they're not worth much. It was only afterwards that I it says that the RAID BIOS only supports HDDs, but I had no problem installing and running windows. However, when I wanted to move some large files from the HDDs (also in RAID 0) I noticed that the SSDs are getting bottlenecked and the response time of the drives sometimes goes over 4-5K ms, which is absurd. Write tests were now tanking in speed compared to previously (I measured it after installing Windows). On further inspection I noticed that the drives are "fragmented" (unoptimised), but the option to optimise them is grayed out in Windows Defragment and Optimise service window. I tried to manually optmise them with Powershell and got an error saying that the drives don't support that command. So it seems to me that because the RAID only supports HDDs, windows can not send TRIM commands to them, despite the drives appearing as SSDs in Task Manager, etc. Before you ask, yes, I am running the RAID on the Intel chipset, not the sketchy one. I looked across the web, but it seems no one ever has tried to do this, so there anything I can do, or do I have to rebuild the whole setup with only one SSD? -
Hey, I'm LF a program that would let me trim a video (cut the last few minutes for example) and save it without any rendering, post processing or anything, just simply cut. Everything I know of is a legit editing program and has to re-render the whole thing which takes long. Thanks in advance!

Hello guys so i uploaded video a week ago its 5min long but i dont like alot of things after 2:50, so can i trim it to 2:50 re-edit the deleted part and put it back there again without losing the existing views and likes? Is it possible?

Just picked up a new SSD for my laptop, old one did simply not have enough space (great deal at local warehouse). WIth the old drive everything was fine from first boot. On this new one I'm having an issue with TRIM apparently not working according to the trimcheck tool. I have veryfied that I'm using the correct driver, and have re-installed WIndows three times and tried with different driver versions. Nothing seems to be helping. This is a fresh Windows install, not a clone from the old drive. I'm not reinstalling Windows again, new drive should last a while now, won't abuse it with unnessescary writes. fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify gives a result of 0. So long story short, I'm planning on upgrading my aging MacBook Pro's hard drive with an SSD. Upon doing some research, I've found that some drives done handle TRIM commands correctly on Linux (which I use for a lot of programming work) and likely also macOS (which is based on Unix and can enable TRIM on third-party drives via terminal commands). These drives are blacklisted in the Linux kernel. I'm now trying to understand what the subsequent "whitelist" block means when it says It then lists Intel SSDs among the whitelisted devices. Sandisk isn't listed in either the blacklist or whitelist. Does this mean that the it would be good for Linux, or that it just hasn't been tested? Tldr: I'm debating between an Intel 540s 1TB ($399) or a Sandisk Ultra II 960GB ($320) and want to know which one I should go with if I'll be using TRIM on macOS/Linux.

Hi guys! Just curious how you take care of your beard, so let's talk about that. I was a Gillette customer, and i really liked the mach3, when the new razor came into market, i tried the new fusion, it didn't end well, i had way more irritations than before, so i began searching for "other solutions". That's how i bought my first disposable freehand razor (because i had way less irritation when i went to my barber shop, and because i did not want to waste 14 bucks for 4 sets of blades every 2 or 3 months); I was afraid of cutting my head off, i must admit it, but it ended very well, so, after a couple of weeks using those few disposable freehand razors (there are 2 types, and i bought some of each), i bought one of those freehand razors with disposable blades. This literally opened a new world for me, so i changed everything i was using, making my shaving more like a rite: i bought a pre shave cream, potash alum, and some balm for my beard and stache. Years have passed, and that's what I'm using. Today, while i was shaving, I thought of making a new topic, with poll, here. So we can talk about how we shave, and share some tricks. My ssd Samsung Evo 840 250GB is digging its grave. SMART looks alright to me. I tried plugging it as slave into a diffrent machine and it's having trouble with any IO. Formating and filling the drive with 0's does the trick for a maximum of 4 days - no issues whatsover and when the time comes it drops like a rock. I've also seen improvent when using Samsung's dedicated software - Magician with the TRIM in advanced mode - it did make the drive go to its former glory... for about 2 days? The drive only has 27TB written and roughly 15K power-on hours. Could there be anything else i could try?

My pc has a Samsung 850EVO 250GB for my windows drive and I am wondering is why when I add in fsutil behavior set DisableDeleteNotify 0 it says this fsutil behavior set DisableDeleteNotify 0 (Disabled) When I put fsutil behavior set DisableDeleteNotify 1 it says fsutil behavior set DisableDeleteNotify 0 (Enabled) Is 0 or 1 the correct value. Any help I thank people for.

When I record TV shows on my PC I usually use FFmpeg to trim up my videos at the beginning and ends without re-encoding. The only problem is, it's very time consuming typing it all up in the CMD. (See my working below) F: (To navigate to my media drive) cd F:\Media\TV Shows\Russell Coight's All Aussie Adventures\Season 03 ffmpeg -i "Russell Coight's All Aussie Adventures S03E03.ts" -ss 00:01:15 -to 00:32:42 -c copy "Russell Coight's All Aussie Adventures S03E03 (Trimmed).mp4" Are there any similar alternatives? Or something like a Media Player Classic or VLC extension?

Is there a command for trimming 3d solids like the surface trim command? It's irritating because the material i am modeling is only 1/8 thick so it is basically like a surface but there's no way to trim using another 3d solid that is only 1/8 thick. Thanks to anyone with any expertise!

Windows 10 doesn't really maintain my drives when it's set to do so weekly so I must do it manually whenever I remember. I want to create a custom scheduled task to automate the process but have no idea what needs to be started and with what parameters to trigger that, anyone have an idea? Any help is much appreciated.

Hi, After latest Windows 10 update, HDD Sentinel reports 80% performance. Before update, performance was 100%. SSD is Samsung 860 Evo 250Gb. Also HDD Sentinel reports that TRIM is disabled but Samsung Magician reports that TRIM is enabled. Look at the attached pictures for more info. What is problem and what could be solution? Thanks in advance.

Doing a custom hard tube loop in Corsair 460x. There isn’t a lot of room in the case so I’m trying to save as much room as possible. The case comes with excessively lengthen io cable. Would it be difficult to trim the the cable. Has anyone done this mod? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hello, I've read various threads here and other sites on the issue but i sincerely can't wrap my head around it so i decided to ask bluntly I recently put a Samsung 850 Evo on my Mac as the main drive (the one where the OS and other things are stored) and i don't understand what are the advantages of having TRIM, if there are problem with this particular drive's TRIM and OSX, if it is enabled on my machine and if it isn't how to enable it. As you can see these are lots of interrogatives, i essentially popped the SSD in its place, made a clean install of the OS on the drive and dumped all the files that i needed on it. My end goal would be to keep the drive alive for as long as possible without drastic performance drops in the meantime. Somewhere i've read that TRIM shortens the life of the SSD but it keeps it fast the whole time but somewhere else i read that it is essential to having it enabled if you don't want your drive to live only for few years. Which is the truth? (Yes i also watched the FastAsPossible! ) As you can see on this screengrab of "Information about my Mac -> More info" (sorry for the Italian :P) it says that there isn't support for TRIM, does that mean that it's simply not enabled or that i can't have it doesn't exist yet for this specific model? If it's simply not enabled and i should enable it how do i do that? Sorry for the bajillion questions, if something is not clear let me know and i'll try put it more simply

I just recently got my first ever SSD, the 480GB SanDisk Ultra II. I don't have anything on it right now and I haven't even use it for anything yet, other than some benchmarking. I plan to use this drive as an OS drive and some games when Windows 10 comes out. So... should I use/enable TRIM or not? Does TRIM impact performance in any way? Does it help or hinder the longevity of the drive? Thanks.

So, i have my SSD and am in the market for an external enclosure. I don't need any recommendations for specific enclosures and would be content with either USB or Thunderbolt. What i would like to ask is if there is any reason to go with one over the other. For instance i heard there are certain things you can do with an external SSD on Thunderbolt that you cannot do via USB (Like using TRIM) But i have also heard that USB users can use TRIM, so that leaves me very confused on what the actual differences are as far as what the restrictions are or are not. I could really use some help on which i should be using or what would actually matter, please help me. Please and Thank You!

So I'm thinking about getting a SSD mainly for a boot drive, snag my OS and programs there too. The qustion is, shall I save up a bit more money and then get a SSD with TRIM, or just go ahead and get a cheaper one - without TRIM? Because I red that SSD's without TRIM slow down over time when they have to delete old data and overwrite it... I'm currently looking at Intel 520 series 128gb. I'm going to plug it in a SATA 2 connector, (my mobo doesn't support SATA 3 *QQ* even though it's pretty solid Gigabyte UltraDurable series) So will I feel the slowdown really if the SSD does not support TRIM? It will already be capped by the connector, since SATA 2 has a 300mb/s limit... Give me your opinions I'm on a budget, so the lower the price - the better. P.S. I mostly play games, listen to music, watch streams and download stuff...not really into video editing or any kind of heavy tasks...just tired of my current HDD which slows down the entire pc when multitasking...

I am working on a new build and I have some problem deciding on SSD's. I want two 128gb SSD's in raid 0. What are the best options out there that have proper garbage collection and trim support? Are samsung 840 pros in raid 0 good for this job? Or should I get SSD's from corsair or intel?

Hey guys, right now, I am running a RAID 1 of 2x Seagate barracuda 7200.14 1tb. this RAID is running with the windows "RAID controller" (I set up the disks through the disk management console). My motherboard is an ASUS Sabertooth 990fx R2.0 (with an SB950 southbridge) and I had a few question: What is the difference between these two options in the UEFI: " [RAID] Legacy ROM" "[RAID] UEFI Driver"? Does this controller support TRIM for my SAMSUNG 840 Evo 256gb SSD? When running in RAID mode, do the non-RAID devices run in AHCI mode? Since the two options are software based (AMD southbridge sends calculations to CPU, that's a fact) then do they both have the same load on the CPU? Windows "RAID" requires a dynamic disk format rendering it incompatible with many OSes and softwares, does the AMD RAID require these dynamic disks as well? Thanks in advance for all of your answers

Hello So guys, I've bought myself an ssd - the Kingston HyperX 3K 120GB and I need some help setting everything up. I'll be doing a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64-bit on the SSD and I'll have my 500GB WD Blue for photos, videos, large games and so forth. What do I need to do? From what I've gathered reading on the internet: - I need to set my SATA controller to work in AHCI mode. ===== DONE - Install Windows, check if I'm using TRIM with command prompt with "fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify" - if it returns a zero, then it's enabled. Also AS SSD is a good software to check this kind of stuff, I've read, and you can also check if you are using Microsoft or Intel AHCI drivers. And that's basically it. Now the questions: 1. Why do some people say that one should avoid SSDs with SandForce controllers? 2. Is the Kingston HyperX 3K 120GB a good SSD? 3. Should I enable S.M.A.R.T.? I've never used it with my HDD... 4. I'm using the Microsoft AHCI driver. Is the Intel one better or they are basically the same? Please give me some tips, in case I'm missing something. Thanks. P.S. My motherboard is GIGABYTE GA-X48-DQ6 with the latest F8D BIOS, I'm using the SATA0 connector for the SSD which is wired to the ICH9R southbridge.

Hey guys, just need a simple and quick answer to this. I have an ASUS P8P67 PRO motherboard and I want to run the OS off a single SSD while running 2 HDDs in RAID 0. If the SSD is not part of the RAID array, yet it is still running in RAID mode because it is connected to the same controller, will it receive the TRIM command?
