Hello, I'm asking this question because I had quite a few games on my HDD around 600 GB of them. I decided to get a 1TB Crucial MX500 SSD and I have installed Windows and some drivers on it already. The main question is is it better (faster) for me to transfer data from HDD to SSD or to download the games again? I'm asking this because my internet isn't the best, It enough to play games but at best times I have download speeds of 40Mbps, but my average is at 15-25Mbps if not less. Having such low means that if I want to download (for example) BF5 it would take like 6 hours. So I want to understand if it's faster for me to connect both drives and just move files from one to another? Old HDD: 1TB Seagate BarrAcuda New SSD: 1TB Crucial MX500

I purchased a 12TB WD Easystore usb 3.0 external hard drive to backup my media files to. When i am transferring files it start out at 70mb/s and will periodically drop to 20mb/s or even stall out to 0mb/s for a few seconds then go back up to 70mb/s then back down again. I have tried changing to removable device policy from quick disconnect to better performance and the only change is instead of capping at 70mb/s it caps at 30mb/s but the fluctuation to 20mb/s or even 0mb/s is still there. I purchased the drive yesterday and i was getting steady 100mb/s+ transfers yesterday but today this is happening. any idea what is going on?

Say I had a 2 port USB 3.1 hub connected to the PC and I only connected one thing to it. I understand that the bandwidth is shared between the two ports, but will the one port still operate at half speed even if it is the only thing connected? Also, what if two things were connected but only one is actually transferring data? What will happen to the speed then? Thanks.

Hello, I tried copying 1.9TB worth of videos from my 3TB 3.5" Seagate Barracude 7200rmp drive to my 6TB 3.5" Seagate Archive HDD v2 (ST6000AS0002) 5900 rpm drive. I am using Ubuntu 16.04, both drives are formatted in ext4, the 3TB one is connected internally via sata 3 and the 6TB one over usb 3.0. The video files are between 300MB and 3GB. At first everything went fine. I was getting a transfer speed of 130MB/s. I left the house when it had transferred around 200GB. When I came back it was transferring at 46MB/s. Since then I can't get it to write above 50MB/s regardless of what I try to copy. I also tried copying from the 6TB drive to the ssd where to os is installed and the max I get is 65MB/s, so the read speeds are also extremely low. I used a bunch of 5GB video files to make sure that I'm getting optimal speeds (though if I am not wrong 300MB, which is the size of the smallest video I have, should also be good enough). When I do the benchmarks with the disk utility provided by Ubuntu it get normal speeds or at least I believe they are normal. (see results below). So my question are : Does anybody know what is causing this decrease in performance? Is it normal? If it is not how can I fix it? I read only a bunch of forum posts and articles only. I understand that the drives get slower the more you fill them, but from what they were saying you start to see a drastic decrease in performance once the drive is 85% full, but mine is not even half full (1.9TB / 5.6TB). Good Afternoon, I am attempting to transfer large files across my local network to my media server (Plex). It is a custom built machine (I7 4790k, 16GB ddr3, MSI Krait MOBO, 4TB mass storage networked drive etc...) from my current gaming rig (ryzen7 2700x, 16GB ddr4, asus ROG MOBO etc...). When I transfer files, The speed is only 10 MB/s. I have searched google to look for what is giving me this issue. Yes all my points of networking is at least 1Gbit over ethernet. that is what a lot of the responses on google said. I have run the IPerf 3 test from both ends giving me 10MB/s results. If I were to do an internet speed test Im nearly at 900Mb/s consistently. I could really use someones help, because I have a large amount of files to transfer consistently. Hi all! I've been pulling out my hair for a month. So much time looking everywhere to figure this out but I'm lost. I have an Asus FX705DT Laptop. It has: 2x USB 3.0 1x USB 2.0 I attached a screenshot of the USB transfer speed. I have a 4TB seagate srd00f2 USB 3.0 hard drive. When I plug it into the 3.0 connection it will copy at 400+ MB/s then immediately drop and show it's copying at a few kb/s but there is zero activity in task manager. If I plug it into 2.0 it does the same thing. 400+ MB/s then drop. As you can see in the attached image it will copy at around 7MB/s, then spike up past 200+MB/s, then back down to 7MB/s over and over. The first 5 smaller peaks is all the same file. It wasn't copying more than one file during that time. If I plug into USB 3.0, delete the USB driver, and reinstall it. It will copy around 15 MB/s steady the whole time with no peaks. But once I unplug the drive, if I want it to work on USB 3.0 again I need to uninstall the driver again or it starts at 100MB+/s, then just comes to a crashing stop. Its so weird. If I'm copying multiple files around 1GB each, it will speed through and copy 400MB of each file instantly, then it slows to 7MB until the start of the next file where it zooms through almost half the file again then back to 7MB. Unless its a large file it will peak up and down over and over like I mentioned above. I have other USB 3.0 devices and none of them do this same thing. Both 3.0 ports work 100% perfect with other devices. But I do have a Logitech G502 wired mouse that doesn't work on the 3.0 but works on the 2.0. It makes no sense. I wiped this laptop when I bought it and reinstalled windows. Went to Asus website and installed all drivers. I have 2 of the 4TB hard drives(Both identical bought at same time) on my past laptop which had one 3.0 port both drives worked flawlessly on it. But now out of the blue neither work on this laptop. I reinstalled windows a second time to see if it would help but no luck. If any of you can offer even a speck of advice I would be forever in your debt. So many hours and I have no clue. I have a home nas set up running windows 10 with 40 TB in storage spaces parity. It serves as my plex server as well. When I transfer files to it via the network (1 Gb Cat 5e) im getting about 45 Mbps max transfer speeds and task manager shows my network maxing out at 100%. This does not change when i try small vs big file sizes. My question is, is it my network that is bottle-necking my transfer speeds or is it the storage spaces parity that is slowing things down. 1 series can be 100 GB+ and it takes a while at 45 Mbps. When i first set up the system i was getting consistent 100 Mbps + transfer speeds. Then one day it just dropped and hasn't changed since. Can someone please explain what i am doing wrong? I'm relatively new to network shares and setting up a network. TIA

Hey guys, didn't really know where to post this. So I recently got an NZXT H440 and an ASRock Fatal1ty Z97x Killer mobo. My question is that I was transferring some movies onto an external USB 3.0 HDD http://amzn.to/1OsQ3kD and I was getting transfer speeds of around 40-50 MBps when connected to the front USB 3.0 ports on the case and about 80 MBps when connected to the MOBO USB 3.0 ports in the back. Is this normal for USB 3.0 ports? I thought that USB 3.0 was supposed to transfer a lot quicker (up to 640 MBps)? Is there a reason my USB 3.0 ports are performing more like USB 2.0 ports? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I just recently built myself a FreeNAS system to backup all my computers too. I have a raid 1 array using two of these drives: HGST Deskstar NAS 3.5-Inch 6TB 7200RPM SATA III 128MB Cache Internal Hard Drive. My server is sitting in another room and is connected to my router. I'd like to know if 11MB/s write to my system is normal or very slow? I have 16GB's of RAM on my FreeNAS system and it runs an intel I3 processor on the LGA 1155 platform. Unfortunately the motherboard that i'm currently using doesn't support ECC memory and the network nic is the onboard one. This motherboard is just a consumer board that I re-purposed. It doesn't use a intel nic, but I still thought it would get better speeds than this. The system i'm using to copy the information from is my personal rig. The motherboard is the ASUS x99 deluxe on the LGA 2011v3 platform. The network nic's are extremely good on this so I know that the bottleneck can't be here. Are the speeds that i'm getting correct? Am I just spoiled by having three SSD's in raid zero on my main rig?

I think it was a Tech Under $100 vid, Linus had a SATA to USB cable for connecting a wireless dongle internally i/o having it sticking outside the case. My mobo (EP45-UD3) only has USB2, same with font of case. My question is - Could the same cable be used to (if extended to outside the case) connect a USB3 memory stick or USB3 ext hdd to get faster data transfer speeds through the SATA2 port on the mobo????
