I have a MacBook Pro 2015 which functions well but with a broken display. Now I want to purchase a Mac mini. Can I use the headless MBP as the input device (keyboard, trackpad) to the Mac mini? If possible I don’t really want the MBP to run at least not to the OS level.

I used laptops ranging from budget to premium from Asus, HP, and Dell. I always noticed that the HP and Dell mid-range laptops have worse displays keyboard The HP keyboard is the weak point to me with the worst keystrokes I can compromise on other things like display and chassis quality. On Dell display is of mediocre quality I have seen so many laptops with white or black dots on the screen just after a few months in some cases flexing chassis trackpad sometimes stuck on click I used to recommend HP or Dell (mid-range laptops ) to people but now I recommend Asus compared to others it has a better keyboard and comes with fingerprint authentication, a metal chassis with less flexing while typing acceptable display, and a trackpad. It's my personal preference based on my experience

On my laptop (ASUS ROG ZEPHYRUS G15 GA503QM-HQ018T) i some times experience a jelly like trackpad experience. There dosent seem to be any coherent reason for it. Sometimes it helps to plug it in, sometimes it dosent. Either way it seems to come back after about 10 minuttes or so (also seems to vary). Using a mouse works just fine, so im thinking it might be the trackpad drivers. Im using the latest version of windows 10.

Hi, it's been a while since I've been here. I bought an Asus Zenbook UX535L from Amazon back in late April and it worked great for about 2 months. Since then it's been nothing but a pain. Starting in early July, the ScreenPad 2.0 stopped functioning completely. I had turned it to "touchpad only" with the hotkey before lunch, but when I came back after lunch the touchpad didn't work at all. I did all the troubleshooting possible, but nothing worked. I even followed the official guide from Asus on how to fix it. After a couple weeks of reinstalling windows and trying to install the official drivers, the touchpad started working as a monitor again but it still didn't track. So now I'm stuck with a laptop that doesn't have a functioning trackpad and the USB A port died yesterday, so I have to plug in my USB C dongle just to use my logitech mouse. I'm in school until December, so I can't send it in for warranty until then, but I'm not convinced it won't happen again even if they reload their custom image and send it back to me. If anyone happens to have a magical fix for my trackpad issue, I'll happily take it. For the meantime, if someone could recommend an equivalent laptop (thunderbolt would be nice to keep), I would greatly appreciate it.

Im fairly certain my issue is hardware related. My rightclick is not working in bios, windows or any other OS ive tried. the e7440 has 2 mouse buttons, near the keyboard and on the touchpad. And none of the rightclicks work. Do i need to replace the whole touchpad assembly, or can i replace both buttons? Or is there no way of actually knowing if the touchpad pcb is broken, or if its just both button pcbs.

There are plenty of voices claiming "Trackpoints are great" or "Trackpoints are outdated and useless, and should be removed from modern laptops". I have been using Trackpoint for two years, and find it better than trackpads after spending two months training myself to use it. However, I have also heard of how great trackpads have become these days, such as those on Macbooks and the Sensel one on Thinkpad Titanium. That kinda made me curious about which one is better in modern days. Therefore, I want to create an "objective" test that produces quantitative results for a "scientific" comparison, which is based on statistics rather than "personal experiences". I hope you can participate in it and help me gather more data for the comparison. So here's how to do the test, which should not take you longer than three minutes: Go to https://mouseaccuracy.com/ and set it to Difficulty: Normal, Target Size: Medium, Duration: 30 Seconds, and change the rest settings if you want to, since they should not impact the test results. Take the test three times (or more, if you want), and record the "Total Score" each time. Calculate the average of your "Total Score"s, and post it here so that I can gather them. You can also include your setup for the test, just like I do, if you want. And here's my result: I took the test five times on a Lenovo X395 (13.3" display, trackpoint speed set at maximum), and my average score is 260. - - - - - - - - - - Edit 2021 Oct.11th 2:21 PM (UTC): Sorry, it seems like I forgot to clarify something... No, you don't necessarily need a Trackpoint for the test. You can do it on a Trackpoint, trackpad or joystick or any other weird pointing device if you want. Just make sure to write down which device you used, a Trackpoint or something else, so that I can compare.

It's been a few months since i switched to ubuntu 20.04 on my toshiba l850 laptop. And trackpad hasn't been working ever since. I know it's not a hardware problem because it works on windows (installed by default). Plugging in a usb mouse works and that's how i've been using it. But I'm tired of carrying an external mouse around. It might be a driver issue but I'm not really sure about it. There are drivers available for trackpad of this laptop but they're all for windows. I've been trying to debug it ever since but it never really worked out. Would be glad if any of you can help thanks. Laptop: toshiba l850 (probably 2013 model) BIOS: Insyde bios Processor: intel i5 3230M (64 bit) (upgraded from the default processor) Memory: 4GB kingston SODIMM DDR3 1600MHz

Hi, Laptop: HP pavilion 15 gaming notebook ak008tx Touchpad: Synaptics TouchPad Driver- 19.3.31.31 Rev.A Windows 10: 21H1 19043.906 I never experienced any issues with my laptops track pad before this. yesterday night, i received a notification saying that an update requires restart... so i did. Once the laptop booted up i could not see any cursor on the screen and the trackpad seemed to not work. Connecting an external mouse would immediately bring back the cursor. I tried to uninstall and reinstall the driver using device manager and windows update. sometimes the trackpad would start to work but as soon as i reboot it stops working again. This is inconsistent and it doesnt always start to work again after fresh driver install. I tried with a clean installation of windows but that still doesnt seem to fix it. It doesn't work even when im booted using the installation USB. however sometimes it randomly starts to work when i reinstall drivers or rollback drivers. On one such occasion i decided not to restart and it worked well until i rebooted about an hour in. During this time the 2-finger swipe and all those features dont work but i find that the latest synaptics driver show up in device manager. also tried to reset defaults in bios and booting in safe mode. I thought that a fresh windows installation would fix any troubles and Im out of ideas. Please help.

So I have an Asus Laptop, not a high end one but gets the work done. So recently, all on a sudden my trackpad started acting mushy. I tried all the fixes but nothing helped. Also it is not continuous. It will get fixed itself like after a minute or two, or after I disable it or I connect a mouse via USB. It is like lagging, drunk but trying to keep up with me. Any fixes?

I have a Lenovo Y50, its really old and keyboard is dirty so weeks ago i ordered a new upper body/case for it which is the palm-rest area with the keyboard and touch-pad which is built in. yesterday the product arrived and i tear my laptop apart and assembled it again on the new body. everything seems to be working such as back-lit, keyboard keys, touch-pad, light indicators. The only problem is the way the touch-pad works. first, the touch-pad on the new body doesn't have gestures, i cant even right click by using two finger click at the same time, i need to press the right side of the touch-pad to right click, and it can only do left/right click and scroll. Secondly , its really slow (as in the dpi is very low) so it requires many slides just to move the cursor from left to right of the screen. So i thought the touch-pad driver doesn't match or something so i thought if i uninstall the current one and scan for hardware changes on device manager then windows will automatically download new drivers for my touch-pad. After i did that the touch-pad is missing from my device manager and i literally cannot use my track-pad at all. its like windows doesn't know i have a touch-pad. and now i cant get it back. there is only HID-compliant mouse in my device manager. Help please.

Hi there I'm writing this hoping you guys can help me get my trackpad/touchpad to work properly. So the deal is for christmas I got an samsung SSD harddisk for my Acer Aspire E1-572, and instead of using their included CD with the file transfer software to transfer my files and OS to the new harddisk, i just installed windows 10 from a USB so I then had a fresh clean new version of windows 10. And it's here the problem begins because instead of getting my previous touchpad driver which was Synaptics touchpad v7.5 on ps/2 port, from when the PC was new and had Windows 8.1, i got some crappy driver which doesn't have the scroll function. Afterwards i've tried to install the newest Synaptics version 19.0.19.1, but it woulden't install..!! I then succeeded in installing Synaptics Elan (sorry can't remember which version), then f*cked something up, so I had to reset the PC and it then installed Elan by it self. Then when I try to remove this driver from programs it says it can't find the module, and I'm stuck having a trackpad which doesn't scroll - and it's driving me crazy.. Please say somebody can help me...

I'm wondering if there's a way to fix my trackpad's pinch to zoom, when I do it on any application or even the desktop, it functions as if I'm pressing CTRL + Scrolling forward or back instead of a true pinch to zoom like doing it n my touchscreen, or on a phone. Is there a way to fix this? It's ultra annoying that I have to zoom to certain percentages on Chrome and wait for it to process and scroll back down to where I was...etc. My laptop is the Asus Zenbook UX360CA

Hey Linus Tech Tips forums, I'm taking a poll. Which do you like to use for general computer use, a mouse or a trackpad. A pointing stick counts as a Trackpad and Trackball mouse counts as an external mouse. Post your preference in the comments and I will post the Results in a week on Tuesday the 18th of October. May the best peripheral win! http://www.strawpoll.me/11411405

Hello, I just got a razer blade stealth for super cheap because it's trackpad and backspace key aren't working. Everything else works perfect. The trackpad clicks fine, but it doesn't even show up in device manager or anything. It doesn't work at all. Same goes with the keyboard, the whole keyboard lights up (including the backspace key) but the backspace key won't register. I have 2 options. Either fix it, or give it back. Since I got it cheap I'd like to try to make an attempt as I need a laptop for school (kinda broke). Thanks so much to anybody who can help me!

Today I installed Speedfan, every time I open the software, my cursor can't move, both with my trackpoint (the red dot on thinkpads which moves the cursor) and my trackpad. It only stops once I restart my computer.

Hi, I wasn't sure where to post this as I couldn't find a "video request" sub-forum. Please move this thread if it is in the incorrect section. I was wondering if you guys could do a Trackpads comparison video. I am in the market for a new laptop and a usable trackpad is one of the most important thing me as I don't want to have to use a mouse. I went to Best bBuy and bought 4 high end laptops from different brands to try and see if there was one I'd like but all of them had absolutly disgusting trackpads. My two biggest complaints were that clicks would linger leading to windows being resized or dragged around unintentionally, and overall precision of the cursor was abysmal. Clicks also wouldn't register half the time, forcing me to click again which was annoying. I'm sure I'm not the only one who use trackpads and would be interested in an in depth comparison of windows laptops trackpads. Also, I thought I heard Linus say he was reviewing the tMBP on the WAN show, am I mistaken? At first I was planning on getting the touchbar macbook pro, and even though I absolutly don't mind the "lack" of ports variety (for me, 4 TB3 ports beats almost any other configuration), the apparently terrible battery life (some are reporting 3-4 hours when I'm getting 10+ with my 3 years old MBP) is really throwing me off, that and the gimmicky touchbar. So I'd be very interested in a review from Linus of the tMBP, and hopefully a battery benchmark.

I have a hp pavillion 15-cb084no and the ELON trackpad will after a period of time become very insensitive and choppy. It does not have anything to do with liquids, drivers or bios as i have checked all those. I have looked a lot around on the internet and nothing is working, help will be greatly appreciated.

So, I am not sure if peripherals is the right place to put this post but it seems relevant as it is a hardware issue. Kindly let me know if I should move the thread elsewhere. I have been using the ASUS ROG Strix GL503GE for about 3-4 months and almost since day 1 this thing has been bugging me. The trackpad on this laptop is trash! I am talking about the hardware here. The click mechanism is shoddy at best, blah blah blah. I am over it. But the thing I can't get over, is the tracking. Why a post so late as I have been having this issue since day 1? Well, because I thought software/driver updates would resolve it but no luck so far, so here I am. THE PROBLEM: Whenever the two-finger scrolling is used, the tracking goes berserk afterwards (it's not immediate, at times it won't happen at all). There would be phantom clicks, the tracking would be inconsistent, the two-finger scrolling or any other gestures wouldn't work/wouldn't register properly. This bizarre issue would last for about 5 - 15 seconds and then everything would be back to normal (until I use the trackpad to scroll again). I noticed that if I want the weird tracking to stop immediately, a gentle pressure on the right of the trackpad would do the trick(outside it, where the palm generally rests while typing). I thought, maybe there's a chip or a wire connection that is being blocked or loses contact so I tried to use the trackpad by making sure both my hands were not on the laptop at all. But, first of all, it's difficult and secondly, it didn't work. Two-finger scrolling seems to be the Achilles heel of this trackpad. I have looked around on the internet for a solution and noticed that a few other ROG models also have the same issue and there seems to be no solution. Most of the people who have contacted ASUS about it have been asked to RMA the unit and get a different model instead (which means it could possibly be a hardware issue). THE QUESTION: Obviously, is there any non-hardware fix for this problem? If not, what could be the possible hardware issue? FYI: The trackpad uses Windows precision drivers and the version is 11.0.0.23

Hello, i'm posting here because i tried a lot of things and i don t know what to do anymore, so i had a fresh install of windows 10 and a hdd in a caddy support a month ago, 5 days ago i started my laptop and the touchpad work for 2-3 minutes then get blocked and also blocked my keyboard so first i check to see if the connection from the touchpad and keypad to the motherboard were good (i traveled with the train and it has a lot of trepidation), after that i tried to re install ATK & Asus Smart Gesture drivers but it only made my keyboard work, after that i tried to play with the regedit, set the bios to the default, i check for windows updates and drivers and i checked to see if the touchpad is enabled(FN+F7). So yeah i don't know what to try anymore, when i open the laptop the touchpad is hidden in device manager, and when i see it shows me that the touchpad has an error: (This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed. (Code 24)), i hope someone can help me.

So I came across this problem after I bought a new laptop. The trackpad works fine most of the time but if I move the mouse cursor a tiny bit, and quite fast, it jumps back to the previous position and registers the gesture as a tap and the cursor "clicks". I've tried different drivers, and dug through all of the trackpad settings I could find but to no success. I'll attach a GIF showing how it looks. I'm using an HP Envy X360 13-ag0804no running on Windows 10 Home. The trackpad is a Synaptics SMBus ClickPad. It's probably just a simple setting I haven't found yet but does anyone know why the cursor behaves like this?
