HI the purpose of this topic is to collect as many as possible bash improvements and set t ings that live in your bash running config( ~/.bashrc*0 A few rules beforehand: - every thing posted should atleast a description for what it does - and the depencies it may or may not have if they arend part of coreutils and or the posix std. - !!!! NO FUNCTIONS !!! if you want to share a neat function , and its not user specific , you can still post it but make sure it can operate as - a stand alone shell script in /opt/bin/ or /usr/bin/ or allow for dropping in /etc/profile.d or /etc/bash/bashrc.d/ without requiring anyting more than a simple call from bashrc or a source instruction - please also separate the aliasses that are distro specific , into a seperate code block so people can copy whole sections without cluttering their env wit aliases that wont work on their system... - if you do need to store something in the env please try to use a bash array ifits more than a single variable, and prefix the variable with the corename of the thing. - for any code that creates new files on the system a procedure to remove all those files automaticly needs to be included , even as a part of an istaller or part of the make file ... eg -dont assume people have sudo installed just write the thing as if ran by root , if it fails when run as regular user , not a problem but an error complaining about permissions is easier fixed than an error about file not found. ill start of with my discoveries some of them really old : 2004+ some of them only recent additions and i wish i had known since the beginning. laptop I need laptop shopping advice
Kevin.Sahlstrom posted a topic in Laptops and Pre-Built Systems
I have been scouring the internet for about an hour and I've only found 3 options. I'm looking for a laptop with a 4080 and a Ryzen 9 CPU and from my extreme googling there aren't many options. I'm looking at the ASUS ROG Strix Scar 17. or the ASUS ROG Zephyrus DUO 16 (but the Duo 16 is a bit over my budget) most important part is the cooling and performance. how the keyboard feels or how the monitor looks is almost completely irrelevant. since I'm connecting it to a setup and the laptop will stay stationary most of its life. But I still need a laptop since i travel overseas twice a year, I do physical 3d classes and online classes. "Most of it's life" is more like 250 days out of 365 I'm going for a Ryzen CPU since I'll be doing a lot of 3d rendering and a lot of editing. 4080 is the highest I can go. and I need good opticx performance and raytracing. budget is around 3k. but even that is pushing it. -
Hey Everyone! While looking at Black Friday deals I found both a GIGABYTE 3060 with 12GB of VRAM and a MSI 4060 with 8GB of VRAM around similar prices. I currently have a 2060. My most common played games are: Cities Skylines 2, Space Engineers, Age of Empires, and Transport Fever 2. While I do play FPS games, I’m less concerned with getting the most frames in those game as I just play casually. I also do video editing as part of my job, so I’m not sure if having more VRAM will affect rendering performance. I also run a Ryzen 9 3900X Thank you in advance for your help. And to all the Americans here, I hope you had a good thanksgiving!

(First off, I would like to say that I have never used any forum before in my life. So if this is the wrong location to be asking this kind of question, or if you all don't really talk about this sort of thing normally, just let me know!) Greetings everyone, I don't really visit Forums, sub-reddits or other similiar forms of media, but this time I needed to make an exception. I was planning on upgrading my PC for a long time but never did it. Until recently where I finally did decide to upgrade. I am pretty happy with my choice but I was going to ask for some advice. I saw that Linus was both happy and disappointed about the GPU that I chose, and I wasn't sure aswell if the overall configuration works well together. Since, I remember some friends of mine talking about bottle-necking my setup or something like that. Also, about the "mix" of AMD and a GeForce card, instead of a AMD CPU with a AMD GPU. So I wanted to ask some people if they could tell me if I made the right choices, or if I need to chance some things up or not. Did I overspend? Could I have saved somewhere? Or should I have gone a bit deeper in some areas and left a lot of room for improvement? I'm not new to pc's and 'tech' perse, but I'm just not sure how well components work together and what items are concidered a waste or not. I chose the parts, and the company will put the pc together and install the software/windows and all for me. But I can still ask them to chance some parts if it fits/works for them aswell. Considering if they have the items on hand or not for example.

Hello everyone on the LTT Forum, I am new here and I am sorry for my bad english (I am not a native speaker...), but I want to ask a question about a pc build/plan. I have a budget from around 500/600 euros. And I came up with this: https://nl.pcpartpicker.com/list/CRQcQ6. I wanted some feedback on it because I am not really a expert... Back to the budget, this build is a little over my budgets but I dont mind picking up some second hand parts so I thought maybe I can get some good deals. Btw this is the first time I build a pc, but of course I watch a lot of Linus video's so I think/hope I can build this pc...

Hi! I'm sorry if this is the wrong place or if this question already appear to death here but I coul'd not find what I was lookin for... I'm wondering if there is a list of things that I should enable/disable right away after getting a new computer For instance: Verify if I can use resizeble bar and if it is enabled, if not, enable it Things like that, that could improve my performance by doing "simple things that everybody should be sure to do"

Budget (including currency): 200~ euros Country: Sweden Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Gaming mainly FPS. Escape from Tarkov is the main game i play Other details:Lenovo Legion T5, AMD 660, 12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-12400F 2.50 GHz, RTX3060Ti 8GB, 16gb(2x 8gb) stock ram(samsung) & 16gb(2x 8gb) CL38 DDR5 4800mhz Kingston Fury, 1TB SSD So i bought this pre build from Lenovo without knowing you couldnt unlock XMP and now im looking to upgrade my motherboard to swap out the Lenovo BIOS and get more perfomance. Im kinda out of the loop on hardware so im asking here for some help or guidance on what motherboard i should look for. Edit: Forgot to add that i get around 60-70 fps on EFT, settings are all low to optimize perfomance and FPS but i barely get over 70 and usually around 60 with dips down to 40. Thanks!

Hey! so I recently started to stream more often and I noticed a couple things, After nearing the 1 hour and 49 to 55ish mark of streams so far, My bitrate seems to drop really badly. I have this information based off 2 recent streams that I have done. Now It could be that its a coincidence that the duration of the stream pooping itself being so similar on both cases has no impact on why my stream frame drops but I should note both these stream were started around 8PMish and ended due to poor bitrate nearing late nights from 11:30pm to 1:20AM. I have a internet plan of 400MBPS download and 20 Upload and I'm already connected VIA ethernet straight to my modem so I'm getting the most out of it. I always test before streaming to see if I'm getting 20 Upload and It always seems to work fine until it poops itself in the end. I don't know if its a internet plan thing and I'm getting capped or its a software thing or maybe something else. My streams are never Laggy on 1080p 60 no FPS issue since my PC is pretty well put for them but when my bitrate drops I get confused My Specs if needed: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/TCkqFg Not sure why this is the case so If anyone has any solutions to this problem that would be greatly appreciated!! I can provide any info if needed. Here is my OBS Logs if it helps, This LOG was from my most recent stream that ended nearing the 1hr and 49 Mark at around 1:25AM asdasd Here Here the Log of me starting up the stream again trying to see if my Bitrate would fix itself after ending the first time but still the same results, so i ended up stopping again after 5 minutes HERE IS STATS FROM TWITCH INSPECTOR THAT SHOWS TIME AND BITRATE SLOWDOWN IF NEEDED!!

Budget (including currency): Around $1200 USD Country: USA Verdict: So currently I'm just Editing on Davinci Resolve which for the build I have now, it gets slow at times, and I thought my memory was fine but I think I might need more or get a better version with 64 GBs instead to make it less of a hassle. But editing aside, the following is slightly a bigger priority of mine, I also Stream often and I done a couple test runs and whenever I play long hours I tend to get dropped frames on Stream especially on games with HD graphics like It Takes Two, so, again maybe better/more ram is needed. Gaming without Streaming anything is fantastic so no problem there. Other details: I plan on streaming on 1080p 60 for the most part, as far as editing, Its nothing insane like, I'm not editing 4K footage at all. Its 1080p gameplay and I'm cutting them up, maybe a few transitions with subtitles but that's it. I leave the pro FX to the experts if I want anything extra I would just not like to have to worry about any lag or setbacks when doing my tasks and streaming, I just want it out the way. I don't think I need to upgrade my motherboard but if that's what helps than so be it. I really think its either GPU or the Memory, or Both that need upgrades to help my case but, you guys know more than me. All help is appreciated, thanks! I'm building a white setup but I'm just missing the cooler. I don't know so much about coolers so I would like some reccomendations about a white AIO. Max budget would be 200 EUR//227,07 USD, I'm buying it from Spain. The setup I'm currently building is this one: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/6DdL68 Thank you.

Come along as i upgrade my pre-built! (and maybe give me some tips) UPFATE: Cooler Master Hyper H412R - Does not work without removing the original back plate which is unfortunately also screwed to the CPU socket in some way. Enermax LIQMAX III - Doesn also not work because of the back plate. For now i only applied some ARCTIC MX-4 thermal paste and made sure the stock CPU cooler is screwed on tight. I'll make sure to add some number later. Besides looking for other options to mount a new cooler i'm working towards getting the cheapest possible AND usable motherboard and PSU replacement.. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Let's start with what i have: My pre-built Acer Predator Orion 3000 - PO3-630 has a "kinda shitty" but okay CPU, a pretty good GPU, an okay amount of memory and i guess something like a PSU.. i7-11700F Intel CPU cooler RTX 3060 Ti (Some kind of Acer Predator card with a blower style cooler) 2x 8GB HyperX Fury DDR4 3200 Enough SSD and HDD 2x FrostBlade 2.0 case fans Now let's see what i plan to do: First of all i have to get rid of the Intel CPU cooler, even for a low power i7 it's just not enough. I already have an AIO ready for when i upgrade the whole PC not long from now but i still have to do some things until then. Intel CPU cooler is getting exchanged for a Cooler Master Hyper H412R. It's more than enough for the now and it's getting exchanged tomorrow (18. January 2022) i'll update here . This will make a really big difference since the downwards Intel CPU cooler makes the whole case into a hotbox, which makes the loud case fans ramp up and the GPU not so comfortable as well. (The new thermal paste will make some difference as well, heard it's applied badly from the factory.) I'll get another 2x 8GB memory i guess, unless someone has something really bad to say about HyperX Fury 3200 8 GB? I think this will be all i'd do before going for the full upgrade. I'll be happy with the GPU and memory for a while, i worked the last 6 years with a fraction of what i have now so i'll make it another 6 with this. Now let's see if this is a good idea: If everything goes as planned i will make a whole new PC in about 6 to 8 months. At this point i will need a new case, obviously. With the new case i'll get some really nice and quite case fans, i guess something Noctua. A new motherboard is a must. The limited connection on the PO3-630 are like building a PC with a car battery connected to your hands, not good. Now i'm not sure where to go. Do i upgrade the CPU? I could go for the newest and best of course. Why not go for DDR5 while i'm at it? Well, i will not be able to afford this so forget about it. I will be on a budget so it would be ideal to stay with the i7-11700F. I mean this baby has 8 cores 16 threads, 2.5 GHz base clock and 4.9 turbo. All the games i've tried work just fine with it and some light Photoshop worked excellent. I'll be working with Capture1 and Premiere Pro for my second job so i hope this will work just as good.. Do any of you have a good reason to not stay with this CPU? Let's get back to the list. (Please just act like there's a 4. in front of this text) Now i feel like i need a new PSU, you know, with mostly the same parts as before (I have to stop making those stupid jokes). I'm thinking about a 750W or 800W, with what i have and what i'll add i think that's enough. (5. you know what to do) It's time for the AIO. In my infinite wisdom i bought an AIO before checking if it will fit anywhere in my current case... Because of that i bought a single 120mm AIO, this one to be exact: Enermax LIQMAX III .. I know it can be enough and i'm not afraid to re apply thermal paste once a year to keep everything performing as it should so i guess i'll stay with it? I guess this is it. Did i forget something important? Would you do something different? I know this post was probably overkill with how i did id but i did not find much on upgrading the new Predators so i thought i'd start with something. I'm thinking about making a video of the upgrade process and maybe adding some Benchmarks once i figure out how to properly log them..

I've never really had a good gaming PC. I've always had ok laptops and mini-desktops that was only able to play in lowest settings. Now when i have the funds i'd like a really good gaming pc and would like to be able to play all AAA-games with beautiful graphics and good framerate. Is there anything you would change from this build? https://pcpartpicker.com/list/rjqnnt Thank you in advance!

Budget (including currency): 500-700 Country: Canada Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Call of Duty, Apex legends, Battlefield 2042 I recently ordered from dell a pre built Alienware Aurora R12 Now I’m kinda kicking myself about it. Specs for reference: i7-11700f processor 1x16gb ram (single channel) @2200mhz 3060ti graphics card. I am fairly new to the PC world. I really am not one to complain but I’m kinda disappointed at how this PC runs. When playing my favourite games, my pc would heat up to 100 degrees. now I have boosted the fan speeds to keep it at 70-80 under high workloads. But it sounds like I have about 7 PS4’s and a turbine jet running in my room. My teammates can even hear it. Also, I’ve read online that having single channel ram is not as good as dual channel ram? What does this mean? Do I need to upgrade my ram?( for gaming and streaming purposes) I am trying to do my best research to figure out the safest way to upgrade my pc. I looked at what dell can do to upgrade and their prices are about 30% higher than in other stores. Plus I have to pay for them to install it too. people tell me it’s dangerous to try and upgrade a pre built PC because if I mess up and lose warrenty it’s game over. im a complete noob at this. I’m worried about going to the wrong place, getting the wrong part, and my pc not working anymore. can anyone give me some advice ? also if it’s worth noting, I play at 1080p 240hz monitor. (Never get that much frames anyway) internet is internet 180 so it’s pretty fast and I run a cat 8 Ethernet cable sorry for all the unorganized info, I’ll be happy to provide any additional info needed to help assist.
