Yes, thunderbolt 2 to thunderbolt 3, as in using the accessories normally compatible with a MacBook ( pro ) 2017, with a mac-mini. I'm aware of the speed limit and everything but I was wondering because all the vids and articles are on about tb2 peripherals being used on a tb3 device, not the other way around. I'm curious how this would work considering the differences between the two of them.

Hello, I have a 2015 MacBook Pro retina, I use it primarily for design (Adobe CC, Sketch & Figma) just wanted to know if there is any way to use an external HD or SSD via thunderbolt 2 port as the main drive to save my design files on it without any issues, and if there are any thunderbolt 2 drives that is recommended.

Hey everyone, First of all, here is my desktop info: Mobo: ASUS P8Z77-V PRO/THUNDERBOLT CPU: I7-3770k GPU: GTX 960 Windows 10 pro For about a year I have been using the processor's integrated graphics to drive my Apple Thunderbolt monitor. My motherboard, though a bit outdated by today's standards, is one of the only ones that has a dedicated thunderbolt 2 port to run my apple monitor (it DOES NOT connect to mini-DisplayPort or work with any adapters). Recently my brother gifted me his old GTX 960, but my Apple monitor cannot connect to the card directly since it works with thunderbolt only. I have been looking for a way to use dedicated graphics through the motherboard display outputs with no luck so far. Lucid Virtu was the first option I looked into, but it is now legacy and not supported in Windows 10. The next thing I tried was setting my preferred graphics processor in Nvidia control panel, but the box is not there and I have to be plugged into the graphics card to even open the Nvidia settings. In the Bios I have tried both enabling/disabling IGFX Multi-Monitor and tried setting the primary display to both iGPU and PCI-E. The settings did not change anything within windows in any case. I tried to follow Linus's video here to see if i could make it work with windows settings: See the same method here: Aaaaannnnndddd............... Only one GPU shows up at a time. When I have my thunderbolt monitor plugged into the motherboard, only Intel HD 4000 shows up under Graphics Performance Preferences. When I plugged my TV into the 960, only the 960 shows up. When both are plugged in, the one that shows up depends on the display I use to open graphics settings. Shouldn't I be able to see both GPUs under the settings? Is there something I have missed? I will try to DDU and reinstall drivers and get back to you if that works. In the meantime, let me know if you have any recommendations. -Johnny

Hi all, This week I am getting the all-new Hotbook pro, i9 n all with 1tb storage and 16gb RAM, and giving all benchmarks bar the graphics outperform my current PC specs (listed below), I'll be now looking to move to a more portable setup with me using the mac alongside the 980ti in a Core X eGPU setup when I am home, this idea would suit me best since I don't play competitively and the GPU performance drawback of using a eGPU enclosure wont be too much of a problem for me since I mainly play Hearts of Iron and old Total War titles. My question of help is, could I set up my win PC as a NAS for steam over 2 1 Gigabit Ethernet cables to my Mac or would i have to buy a Thunderbolt 2 card and use that instead, also how would I go about setting this up for that PC in Ubuntu since I plan on using that? I'm trying to use my MacOS High Sierra as a monitor for my Nintendo Switch. I have a Thunderbolt 2 to HDMI cable. ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00Z6TEL64/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ) I am having trouble as everything is plugged in but I have no idea how to get the Switch to actually display on my Mac. I don't know how to (action) switch the mac monitor's display to capture what is coming through from the Thunderbolt 2 cable. I'm getting the feeling that Mac is unable to become a display and instead only able to display to TVs and such, as what would be the computer's tower is within the monitor. I don't want to give up yet, so if anyone can figure this out?

So here is my dilemma, I have a MSI GS63VR 7RF laptop (Win10) which has Thunderbolt 3 on it. It also has a mini display-port. I want to purchase (1) of (2) types of audio interfaces for recording. One has a single Thunderbolt 3 connection (no way to daisy chain), and the other has (2) Thunderbolt 2 connectors (can be daisy chained). Question 1 : Are there ANY thunderbolt 3 (USB C type) dongles that have (2) downstream Thunderbolt 3 jacks ? This way I will not loose any additional Thunderbolt 3 usage such as drives, displays etc. I have seen some expensive docks that have 2 jacks, but one is used to connect to the PC. Question 2 : Will the Mini Display Port (same connector as thunderbolt 2) work as thunderbolt 2 since I have Thunderbolt 3 hardware in the laptop ?? I would still like to have 3 displays and the Audio Hardware connected as well with the benefit of the fast buss. Thanks for anyone's input. LINUS NEEDS TO DO A VIDEO !!!

Hi Guys and Gals, Straight to the point: I'm tired of the sad transfer-speeds between my mac and my PC, and I want to try something new. I have a retired Samsung 950 Pro PCI-E M.2 drive, and would like to put it in one of those M.2 external drive dongles for large-capacity fast external storage. However, I'm being bombarded by all these new serial/other data transfer technicalities and it's driving me crazy... My mac is an early-2013 MacBook pro retina with 2 mini displayport-styled thunderbolt 2 ports. My PC's motherboard is an MSi X99 board with 2 usb 3.1 Gen2 ports (1 Type-C, 1 Type-A). Question 1: Can the displayport thunderbolt connectors on my mac be used for storage/data transfer from an external drive, or is it a peripheral/video-only transfer bus? I'm pretty sure it can, since I used to use an ethernet-dongle with it. Just making sure. Question 2: If MSi's official sources say USB 3.0s capable of 5Gbps are now called 3.1 Gen1, and ones capable of 10Gbps, Then why does AppleInsider state differently? AppleInsider seems to lop USB 3.1 together with Thunderbolt 3 @ 40Gbps, yet also gives it its own column @ 10Gbps. This is kinda like saying they are able to inter-communicate... which as far as I've heard, they're different (???) This directly links to the last part of the next (final) question, the sentence that is bold+underlined. Finally Question: Is there a way for me to achieve thunderbolt-2-like speeds using the same 950Pro SSD on both my Mac and my PC? Elaborated: are there enclosures such as this, that communicate through Thunderbolt 2 instead of SATA, and would I be able to get the same speeds as Thunderbolt 2 on my PC's USB 3.1 Gen2 Ports? Or would I need something like this (Below) to do so? OR Or would USB 3.1 hinder the Thunderbolt-dedicated drive, or even make it non-compatible without a Thunderbolt card? as you can likely tell from the way in which I've asked and structured this question, I am very confused at the moment, and some guidance would be very helpful! Thought it would be worth pointing people towards the legendary DevinGraham's recent video on editing hard drives, in hopes the LTT team might show them how it's done. Video can be seen here; Where the editing team uses racks of hard drives they move around to edit footage. I imagine it's great for travel, but feel an ingest station and network-based storage would be great for these guys. That, and provide more video content for the LTT team, maybe a chip-in from Protocase, and finally, some real drives from WD, or the HGST subsidiary (according to BackBlaze, HGST drives have the best reliability) -ShelteredChild

I recently got a laptop and i find that my GPU is greatly bottlenecking my CPU and obviously I can't change my graphics card. So I went ahead and found out about EGPU's but I couldn't find one with a built in PSU and having a thunderbolt 2 connection. Any Help?

In the z87 chipest line, Asus has the deluxe and deluxe dual board, which the difference is only on the presence of thunderbolt and NFC express. Now we have the deluxe quad, which the difference (with deluxe dual) is thunderbolt 2 only.... Squinks @TechInferno, who was known for successful running a 780ti via thunderbolt 2 on a 2013 15" Macbook Pro running Windows 8.1, posted his successful setup ( and probably the world's first external-GPU SLI config) of a 780ti sli via 2 separate thunderbolt 2 channel on a 13" macbook pro, running Windows 8.1 . Of course there are some limitation on this setup, like you need at least a quad core cpu to run it, otherwise the cpu will bottleneck the sli performance; or Macbook Pros w/Iris-only graphics is required, as Macbook Pro with discrete GPU + 2 eGPUs will not boot, or result in code 12. i am getting a z97 motherboard i am leaning towards buying the Gigabyte z97x gaming g1 wifi-bk black edition motherboard i was wondering if i could add an thunderbolt 2 card in for fast storage is there an option for that?
