  1. Posting this under Operating Systems, because there don't seem to be posts or threads for discussing the newest Techlinked videos, like there are for the main channel's vids. This is a callout post. When I say "you", I mean Linus Media Group; in particular the TechLinked team. For the sake of transparency, it might also be worth noting that I am what could be considered the "average Linux user". Practically living on the command line, Arch btw, etc. However, I think I am still qualified to speak about the "new user" experience. In the Techlinked (titled "The Fight of Apple's Life" at time of writing), a statement is made regarding Linux (GNU/Linux, for those who care) as a Windows alternative. Something to the effect of "Before you go mentioning GNU/Linux in the comments, maybe consider that the average user doesn't want to go through a bajillion complicated steps just to install even Ubuntu or Mint". The gist being, of course, that installing even Ubuntu or Mint, considered by many to be the most user-friendly Linux distros, is somehow difficult. I strongly disagree with this sentiment, and would even go so far as to say that it is actively misleading and harmful. Perhaps even insulting to the people who have worked so hard to make it as easy as it actually is, even for less tech-savvy individuals. I will note that I think there are plenty of good reasons to not switch to Linux. Having to adjust to a new and different system is often just not feasible. Certain software just doesn't exist over there, and even when alternatives exist (which is the case for most things), they might be different, leading us to the problem of having to adjust again. But to single out the installation process as a reason to not switch could be bordering on journalistic malpractice. This just isn't true. Anyone who's actually ever installed Ubuntu or Mint should know how simple it is (again, not just for tech-savvy individuals). It might even be simpler than Windows at this point (please take this in particular with a grain of salt; it's been a while since I last touched any Windows installer. Point is, it isn't any *more* difficult). Now, maybe the point was meant to be that the average user doesn't want to deal with installing a new OS at all. That would also be a fair point, and ties back into the issue of switching costs. The problem is that that isn't what you said. You singled out Ubuntu and Mint for having a difficult installation procedure, which is simply not true. Not even mentioning the possibility of 3rd-party refurbishers doing the installation themselves, solving the problem of new users having to install any OS at all (though tbf, this omission is less egregious). At best, this is misleading, and perpetuating the dogmatic (and incorrect) sentiment that Linux is "difficult" (it's not; if my mom can use it, then anyone can), and that there is no alternative to Windows; that forking over $100 just to still get ads and spyware preinstalled is actually as good as it gets. At worst, this is contributing to the Windows 10 EOL e-waste problem mentioned in the same video: Due to the notion that Linux is hard to install, more people w/ computers that aren't Win11-capable will simply throw out their computer (potentially creating e-waste!) and buy a new one, instead of installing an up-to-date, mainstream Linux distro such as Ubuntu or Mint. I expected more of you, a company that has boasted about how much it cares about responsibility and so on. If you're going to discredit Linux as a viable alternative to Windows, please do so for reasons that actually exist. That is all.

  3. Did anyone notice something was bit off with last Techlinked video? Feels like the studio lights were bit off compared to before, Riley movement was bit choppy on times, at 0:50 there was a double take and it just felt as if he was... NOT THE REAL RILEY! Okay, a bit too dramatic. But is it something with my screen or the video indeed is edited a bit off? BTW @RILEYISMYNAME, if you read this & you need help - blink quickly 8 times in the next video and touch your glorious mustache! Screenshot:
  4. Wake up this morning and like a kid waiting for Santa I sat patiently by my phone for the latest videos to be uploaded to Floatplane. I watch Linus and Alex jank the shit out of a graphics card that is worth more than some of the cars I have previously owned, but then I am faced with a thumb nail of the ever so beautiful Riley, except there is a padlock next to his face? Anyone else having an issue with the latest TL video being locked on FP? Clicking it leads me to the feed me money page, but Im already subscribed. Also the video is published on Youtube. I've sent in a ticket, but wanted to see if its affecting anyone else.
  5. So I just wanna start out by saying i'm glad the Linus Media Groups are back on their feet & back up & running again because many would be lost in tech without you.(Until our Lord & Savior Steve of Gamers Nexuses swooped in to save them) But i digress So the issue is pretty simple here, TechLinked seems to be getting served youtube ads by crypto scammers on a large scale rn, most of the channels i've reported & blocked (more than 3 times now) have no youtube videos to speak of & most timed the videos ad telling users to go to their website with a faked elon voice over is all you will see, soI don't really have much to go on to research the issue deeper or do anything beyond report the issue to youtube & go along my way so i thought id drop a dime to the ltt group here & other viewers possibly that this is happening & what it might look like to avoid and report them to hopefully get the issue fixed quicker before it causes anyone damage. Hope it helps
  6. idk why but the consor bot doesn't like my comment He mentioned Star Citizen in the Techlinked video and it took over the news for me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqxzE1m2fzg IT'S NOT EVEN IN BETA ITS STILL IN ALPHA. In the time span of Star Citizen being in development Elon Musk announced, built and launched a rocket into space, and not to mention the games macro transactions from ALL the ships you can buy in the store. As of June 2020 the game has over $300 MILLION U.S DOLLARS FROM FUNDING(source: wiki). The closet game that i can think of to having that budget is GTA V from somewhere between $137 million to $265 million(source: Business Insider) and it was in development for about 3 years as opposed to Star Citizen's development which is on going and has been in development since 2010. My prediction for that games relase date is 2025. This comment was posted on; 2021, February, 10th i wanted an exact date on this comment so i can look back on it in 5 years to see if my prediction was right.
  7. What are your general thoughts on if LMG creates a cryptocurrency? Pro's and Con's? I think the only use case I could think of off the top of my head was one in which holders could vote (costing a certain number of coins) or submit news ideas (also costing a certain number of coins) for the TechLinked channel on a cyclical basis. Then, whoever's ideas were used gets paid out a portion of the coin pool determined by voting popularity. Further, a portion of the total coin pool goes back to LMG as a fee. This puts less of a reliance on YouTube monetization, sponsors, and other forms of income for LMG, thus allowing them to focus on creating the best content with less focus on the money. Don't get me wrong, they seriously do the best at their sponsorship disclaimers, and transparency with money. Logistically, this could be a nightmare to create and would be unreasonable to even attempt for all I know (which is not that much for the creation of a crypto). But I know I would buy the coin, not for the profits of it, but because of the people behind the coin. I would like to hear y'all's thoughts on this matter (from people who know about this stuff way more then me). Lastly, has this discussion been made before? if so, where? Have a good day!

    Facebook Suffers Huge Leakage

Facebook acknowledges personal information of 500M users posted online, says data is ‘old’ Summary Facebook has communicated user information has been hacked in a low-level breach. This includes phone numbers, contacts and other Facebook information available on accounts. Quotes My thoughts Does not matter if previously reported. Facebook has a responsibility to its users to let them know their data has been hacked, so they can change passwords and emails. Awful behaviour by Facebook - 533 million accounts its not a joke. Sources https://globalnews.ca/news/7737055/facebook-user-data-leaked/
  9. Why is Techlinked not on the news service on smart speakers such as Google Home, and Echo? Is it intentional, or just not thought of/got around to it?
  10. From the latest episode of TechLinked, Riley said that he wanted mid-tier Pixel phone. But as James has said, "That's what Pixel a is for". And I totally agree. Pixel is somewhat a developer phone. To give developer a mid-tier hardware and that's wasn't meant to cover the future, I think is a wrong move. Riley also said "Stop compete with Apple", but I think that's totally what Pixel is for. The flagship of Android. I don't think most people would agree with Riley here but I have no idea. When asked why he didn't go for Pixel a, Riley said "I don't like it". So that doesn't explain much. I think most people would agree with James that Pixel should be flagship, but I could be wrong. So I wonder what you guys think? Do you think 1) Pixel should be a mid-tier phone 2) Pixel should keep flagship status and why? Thanks

    Meme ?Review ?For Health ?

Memes on Instagram, Reddit bring comfort to people struggling with depression Source: https://www.cnet.com/news/memes-on-instagram-reddit-bring-comfort-to-people-struggling-with-depression/ In general, talking with your problems has always been for the benefit. Communication and social interaction is a key component of human life. This is a great avenue. More Expresso = Less Depresso. The article goes on with sort of a case study-like approach. This hasn't of course been documented very well, however communication about your problems and issues is the forefront in confronting and absolving the issue. Memes would be more of a convenient way to open the ice to dialogue, as seen per example here. The rest of the article is a great read with more input from Psychologists,
  12. Disney Plus: Release dates, prices, shows and movies to expect on the streaming service Source: https://www.cnet.com/news/disney-plus-streaming-service-release-date-price-shows-and-movies-to-expect-d23-mandalorian/ Notably for me, a Kenobi series starring Ewan McGregor is confirmed. Very excited. So it may seem on the surface that it appears to be a straightforward Netflix competitor, however it may be more akin to Floatplane: So much like the several channels floatplane has, available to purchase separately or as a bundle. Either way, its cheaper than Netflix, and with better shows it looks like. US etc are expected to get it November 12th, while AUS/NZ get it November 19th. I wouldn't mind paying more. Netflix has gotten rather mundane once you finish re-watching all the TV shows. I'm excited. Great news for almost everyone. (Sorry Linux, no entertainment for you!) Seems like lots of content, even initially, at a great price. Definitely undercutting Netflix and finally giving competition to the market (Sorry Floatplane, not yet) Opinion: Yes please. I'm watching re-runs of the Office waiting for new TV shows (Peaky Blinders coming out soon). Nothing good on Netflix now, all watched. Hopefully this platform doesn't get region-locked like Netflix, not that it won't matter with a VPN.
  13. So I heard of this the other day and Australia doesn't get much news at all in this space. Anyway, there has been some info about Uber Trialing airport shuttling with flying vehicles in Melbourne. Other than just being interesting in the tech space it should be great as a method for relieving congestion which is apparently a huge issue in Melbourne The plan so far is to have pickup areas called "Sky-Ports" and a trip from the CBD to the airport is going to be under $90 (AUD so ~$62.15 USD). There is also talk of pursuing these trials in Dallas and Los Angeles. The West article ABC article
  14. I have no idea how possible this would be, but it would be pretty cool to have tech linked as a video news source on a Google Home Hub. I regularly listen to/watch the news in the morning on my hub and then, on days that TechLinked is released, go to my phone to watch the latest episode. It would be awesome if it could be added as part of my morning routine on Google Home! Not sure if this is even an option for a company that isn't a worldwide media outlet, and I know its probably not just as simple as applying and waiting for Google to accept, but if it's something that LTT could feasibly do then you guys should definitely look into it! I can't imagine I'm the only one who would like to see a feature like this.
  15. How playing video games could get you a better job Source: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-49317440 I've never played those games so can't comment. Let's read more. I used to work as an employee for Hays. Maybe they saw on my FaceBook I played a lot of FarmVille? I've never listed gaming on my CV, even when I played computer games (don't have time for them now). It sort of felt unimportant and irrelevant. Much like eSports is looked at (take it or leave it, you don't see it covered on the sports section in the news do you?) Not sure what the author meant by that last statement. If you aren't playing casually, then that helps? The goal of a video game for me is to enjoy spare time, so I guess its always casual? I'd probably have a good chuckle to be honest if I'd see that in a CV. Good to have an enjoyable hobby I suppose, and there is a little bit of dedication there. If people put down fitness or a sport as a hobby, I don't see why they shouldn't put down video games. Nice try Mark. The last part is what I think its really all about. There is a very large association with puzzles, problem solving etc that really stimulates brain activity. Its a good way in general to help prevent Alzheimers and Parkinsons. Training your brain, keeping it active is quite relevant.
  16. I recently got a Google Home Mini for my dorm room and I was setting up my daily news stuffs when I realized that it would be very nice to get my YouTube news on there all at once. So, I went over to Google Podcasts and found that Philip Defranco is already on there and up to date as well as the WAN show, but TechLinked only has the first episode ever. Would it be possible to get the TechLinked podcast page kept up to date?

    Good Guy Amazon??

Amazon warehouses will start donating things you don't buy Source: Henry St Ledger - https://www.techradar.com/au/news/amazon-warehouses-will-start-donating-things-you-dont-buy Great news for these Charities. Amazon doesn't dispose of any small amount either - Especially due to climate change, this is a very welcome move, and a win for everyone. Companies can get rid of unused stock and much better on landfills. Its quite interesting that these companies have that much refuse stock, hopefully this puts a lot less pressure to get rid of them, and families in poverty get a nice little present from the sallies. Great stuff.
  18. In the latest TechLinked episode, Riley was explaining the details of the awesome new HoloLense 2. However, he did err in that he said the OG was $5000, more than the 2’s $3500. A HoloLens enthusiast myself, I’m familiar with the pricing and know this is incorrect. The Commercials Suite of the OG (which came with a number of features like Kiosk Mode) was $5000, but the standard edition (Develper Edition) was the same model and was only $3000, making it cheaper than the new one. Hopefully the 2 will have the commercial features built in, or that commercial suite might be a bit more...unaffordable. Not that the standard is cheap ofc.

    Mac Using AMD??

macOS 10.15.4 Catalina Beta Contains References To AMD Processors Source: https://ioshacker.com/news/macos-10-15-4-catalina-beta-contains-references-to-amd-processors Perhaps a Mac Mini refresh with APUs, or perhaps a APUs for the 13" lineup - or even a MacBook refresh (which would be more than probable). Not sure how to copy an embed twitter link, but its on the source with the code mentioning the APUs. My Opinion: - Yes please. This has been an ongoing issue where you buy the expensive MacBook and you just don't have the graphics capabilities you deserve. In the higher end MacBooks this just isn't necessary. - Could this open up to Ryzen for MacBooks? - Or Threadripper for the iMac - more profit overhead for the same performance just makes sense to replace the Xeons in the iMac Pro. - Weren't we talking about moving to ARM in 2020?
  20. Quantic Nanotech Begins Pre-Launch Pilot Trial Tests of First Ever Wearable Osteoarthritis Glove Source: https://www.wearable-technologies.com/2019/10/quantic-nanotech-begins-pre-launch-pilot-trial-tests-of-first-ever-wearable-osteoarthritis-glove/ Osteoarthritis, or degenerative joint disease, is the most common joint disorder. It is a frequent, if not inevitable part of ageing and is an important cause of physical disability in individuals over the age of 65. The fundamental feature of osteoarthritis is degeneration of the articular cartilage; any structural changes in the underlying bone are secondary. Although the term osteoarthritis implies an inflammatory disease, and inflammatory cells can be present, osteoarthritis is primarily a degenerative disorder of articular cartilage. You can tell its really free because its not US healthcare. Well I wonder this glove can do that Tylenol can't. Great news.
  21. Urgent update for older iPhones before they lose vital functions Source: https://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=12280261 It appears Apple pushing update for the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5, making the support for these phones around 8 and 7 years, being released in 2011 and 2012 respectively. But why? Thats interesting, I wonder if Android devices need an update too? (Theres a joke there somewhere with Android and Updates). So why is this update necessary and how does GPS Technology keep track of time? Thats quite interesting, however it should be noted that the 5 will need to update to iOS 10.3.4, and the 4S to iOS 9.3.6. So great that these are still supported, great for budged-minded people holding on to still-capable (not really) iPhones. However older iPhones will not be updated, and iPad models with cellular connectivity up to the 4th generation, will also be depreciated. Which is fair enough as they are just hard to use now. So - as a reminder: Make sure to update, there is probably an update for all Apple iDevices for this fix too. My Opinion: - Great work. I'm sure these phones are probably hand-me-down to kids, and for people who bought them not too long ago on a budget. Excellent news that they are still able to be used to their full functionality after so long. - I wonder if Android devices will be issuing a similar fix for phones that are older, maybe not 8 years but you know.
  22. DeepMind AI achieves Grandmaster status at Starcraft 2 Source: https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-50212841 So the Results are in from AlphaStars performance, and its not bad! Well paper's don't lie. It probably grinded up to that rank over such a short time. There you go. The AI in your self-driving car in the future can also obliterate the Zerg on Auir. Generally that would be the way most people learn the game. Watch more professional players and learn to scout. However this is AI. I think it was actually fairly obvious when playing against AlphaStar. They would usually be crushed or face a much more aberrant opponent. Not bad for those 50-100 people! Still an impressive result. AI has come such a long way from beating people in chess, to a very unpredictable game of SC2. My Opinion: - Great result, very useful for professional players who struggle to find games at their level, great for practicing, as the bot actively seeks your weaknesses with presumably a fresh slate. - Great decision making skills for AI. - Great.
  23. Amongst the slew of Black Friday deals (... errr, is it Black Week at this point?), techie-approved gadget vinyl-skin and accessory maker, dBrand, has quietly listed preorders for its customization for the latest of electric vehicles from maniac Elon Musk; the Cybertruck. DBrand's site now lists 3M vinyl wraps for all the bare metal body panels of the futuristic hauling machine, and the wraps are available in the site's standard assortment of styles, textures and colors. In typical dBrand fashion, the site is full of satire about the controversial shape of Musk's truck, poking fun at its angular appearance and suggesting that the designers used only "a pencil and ruler" (dBrand). Is this purely an Elon-fuled marketing stunt, or is the site serious about its hefty pricetag of $3094.80 to fully cover your Cyberpunk-mean-machine? Only time will tell whether the Prism screen-turned window protectors will stop a bullet from peircing your Cybertruck windows... but one thing's for sure: an all Zebra-wood skinned vehicle is sure to attract some attention from even the most tech-exposed Silicon Valley residents. 24. Spotify will stop running political ads in 2020 Source: https://www.cnn.com/2019/12/27/media/spotify-political-ads/index.html (sorry for CNN, its that or Radio New Zealand, which no one here has heard of) Thats fair, if you cant curate the ad population, Spotify cant affiliate with a political party - its bad business. Although its also surprising who uses free Spotify still (sorry guys). I haven't heard ads on Spotify since 2014 (wierd flex), so I cant really comment about the ads. Great move though my Spotify, politics has little place in music IMO (not in the stuff I listen to - not sure who Nicki Minaj votes for). IDK if they are trying to appeal to the younger generation on Spotify, but now its a more neutral platform. Great work. Well we know which ones not to go on. Political ads often simply come off cringe, I just try to hide them. Political Ads on Google is quite understandable as they have a large distribution - its probably just the way to go. So what do you think, should political ads be allowed on social media? Should ads in general be regulated more on more intimate social media, such as Spotify (we listen to music a lot more than be update our status I feel).
