I'm from the EU and I've always been confused by the US tax system (much like a lot of Americans I guess) and I presume Canada has a similar system? What I wonder about is, do the prices listed in stores include taxes? As far as I know, they don't, but do you pay that tax when you do your taxes? Are PC components even taxed and if so how much? In the EU all items sold to consumers (i.e. not businesses) have to include a tax internationally called VAT which depends on the EU country, but is usually around 20-22 % (stuff like food has a much lower tax rate). So, like Linus often says, US and EU prices often end up pretty much the same i.e. 300 USD and 300 EUR, since currently the euro is worth 19 % more, which is pretty much the same as the tax rate. To sum up: Is Europe really getting fucked on tech prices that hard or does that only appear to be the case at first glance?

Hello. I live in Mexico and I found here a GPU with reasonable price so I bought one for me and one extra. I want to give it at the same price to a friend that lives in the States. But I don't know about import taxes there, if I send the card via DHL will he then have to pay taxes for it? We want to know if between shipping and taxes it will not be worth it at all.

So I have a friend in Turkey who has a really crappy rig, he'd been evicted and lost his previous PC, so I was hoping to give him one of the many I have. Where would I even begin to do that? I've done some googling but haven't turned up much. Also I want to know if there is a way I could pay the import tax for him since he can't afford it? He's currently stuck on a PC with two gigs of DDR2 and a gpu with 256 megs of VRAM.

Hi all, Watching all the LTT channels for the past 5 years now, loving the content. So I purchased the CPU Pillow 50x50cm paid 69,99 dollar for it plus 19,99 dollar shipping and 18,90 dollar taxes. I do have to say the pillow is really nice, soft and looks very stylish in my living room! Took a month to get to the Netherlands, but when it got at the postal service they send me another invoice for taxes. They from the postoffice kept telling me i paid for US taxes, and not theirs which is 21,55 euro (Inklaringskosten). So i looked at the track & trace and saw it went from Vancouver to Los Angeles and then to the Netherlands. As far as I know and can find online you only have to pay taxes from origin to destination and not when a package is transfered between planes in another country. So in total i now paid 135,86 dollar to get it delivered which is about double the original price. The post office is basing their decision on https://www.lttstore.com/pages/customs-duty-fees Can anyone explain if this is even legal, or how i can prove that i paid for the correct taxes. Hey Guys, Well the new business survived the first year. Website - check, network for 5 offices - check, computers and printers - check. In a few months its time to go to the account and do taxes. I've saved all the receipts and have them broken down to month. But I wanted to actually go to the account with everything organized by month. I've never done this before so thought I'd look for a software program instead of making my own excel document until I have a better grasp on things. So any suggestions or videos to see what is out there for tax software for keeping self employed expenses and income documented? Thanks again in advance for your help. Denver

I just noticed something weird about the S20 series. According to US prices, the S20 is $999 and S20+ is $1199. iPhone 11 Pro is $999 as well and the iPhone 11 Pro Max is $100 more expensive than the S20+. Theoretically the S20 and S20+ should be about the same price as the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max respectively. Now, this really is not the case... The S20 is $1039 (9 990 SEK) compared to $1359 (12 995 SEK) for the iPhone 11 Pro and the S20+ is $1246 (11 990 SEK) compared to $1486 (14 295 SEK) for the iPhone 11 Pro Max! This is a bit weird ain't it? Especially considering that they are the same price US or even $100 more expensive in case of the S20+ compared to the 11 Pro Max. I looked more into this and came up with two conclusions: If you buy for example the iPhone 11 Pro from Apple it shows the full price $1359 (12 995 SEK) and they write that $270 (2 599 SEK) of the price is the VAT (a form of tax if anyone is wondering). If I instead will buy an S20 from Samsung, it also shows the full price of 9 990 SEK but they they don't write anywhere if the VAT is included in the price, or how much of the price that is the VAT. Same thing goes for the iPhone 11 Pro Max and S20+, (Pro Max is $1486 (14 295 SEK) and $300 (2859 SEK) of the price is VAT whereas the S20+ is $1246 (11 990 SEK) and we have no clue how much of that price is the VAT). This got me thinking; The VAT rate in Sweden is 25% for electronics. If you take 25% of the price for the S20 (9990x0.25 = 2497.5 SEK or $260) and add that amount to the price, it gives us the price of $1299 (12 500 SEK) for the S20 which is almost on par with the iPhone 11 Pro's price of $1359 (12 995 SEK). (25% of the price for the S20+ is 11990x0.25 = 2997.5 SEK or $312, that added to the original price gives us a new price of $1558 (14 988 SEK) which is a bit more expensive than the iPhone 11 Pro Max, which it theoretically should be since the S20+ is $100 more than the iPhone 11 Pro Max US price). Is there actually no VAT on the S20 phones? Conclusion number one: According to the information in the paragraph above, it almost seems as if Samsung doesn't have any VAT-fee on their S20 phones! Does anyone know anything more about this? Have Samsung got some special deal with the Swedish government that makes there S20 products not being obliged to have any VAT on them? If that is the case, wouldn't this maybe be a violation of some EU ''anti competitiveness'' laws? I mean, if this actually is the case, it would put other phone companies in a major disadvantage and it would be way harder for them to compete with Samsung from a financial point. Conclusion number two: The other possible explanation for the S20 and S20+ being so much cheaper compared to the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max despite that they should be about the same price is; Samsung could be selling the S20 phones much cheaper so that the 25% VAT is already included in the price. But this would mean that Samsung at a minimum makes $200 less per S20 device in Sweden compared to the US. This wouldn't really make that much sense from a business perspective since making $200 or even way more money less per device is a lot of Samsungs S20 profit margins gone. Do anyone of you guys have any more information regarding this? Do you know if there actually is no VAT on the S20 phones in Sweden? How are other regions looking price-wise, the same weird price difference between the iPhone 11 Pro/MAx and S20/+?

Hi all, I'm looking at a couple of sandybridge server/WS parts on eBay, but they're based in China. Shipping is only $5, but eBay says I might be charged additional customs fees etc... I'm interested to hear any thoughts on this constitutional amendment currently ready to go up for vote in Colorado. In short, it is an amendment to Colorado's constitution to create an organization that dictates all healthcare in the state and operates outside of state government and collects taxes at it's own discretion to fund itself. I must say up front, I am conservative(likely extremely so I most people's minds) in my moral's and values I am very against this entire amendment. I believe the government should as small as possible and restrict it's intrusion into lives and economy as much as possible. Some of the biggest problems in my eyes are as follows: Little to No accountability: The 21 member board that makes all the decisions has seemingly unrestricted freedom without any accountability to the public. They set their own pay, can assess unlimited income taxes... that is raise taxes without any approval(TABOR does not apply), decide who gets what healthcare, are not bound by HIPAA(doctor patient confidentiality). Taxes: 25,000,000,000(billion) dollar tax increase(1/3 to 1/2 of the current state budget?): By implementing 10% payroll taxes(3.33% employee paid, 6.66% employer paid) will increase the state income tax to 14.63 percent, the highest in the country. PLUS a 10% tax on all non-payroll income. All personal health care data will be stored in a database for publicly available research. Is estimated to have an 8,000,000,000(billion) dollar shortfall by it's 10th year.

Corporate tax evasion and special agreements are being put more and more under the light and while in this case it was deemed illegal a lot of times it is done in a legitimate way. The real question is of course in my opinion how Ethical is it to dodge taxes on scales like these. There is also the little fact that Apple made an agreement with Ireland and yet Apple gets punished and Ireland gets the cash. It also seems unlikely that apple will leave because no matter where you are in the EU you are now watched like an hawk and getting such sweat deals (with sour aftertaste) are unlikely. Now it will be without question that they will launch an appeal, after all they are paying their lawyers anyway and 13 billion is still a decent chunk of change even for Apple. I do wonder what the ripple effect of this will be however, seeing I work for a company that is very creative and I know a few people working for other companies which are creative. Is this going to stand on it's own or will it be the start of an avalanche for more cases? In my opinion a nation should be able to compete with other nations, I believe that governments should run more with a business mindset and this to me is part of it. However as it stands with the EU it is a giant mess of things which are and are not allowed and it seems no one really knows which what how of anything atm. Time will tell I guess.

So, this might not seem technology related at first, but it is. Mainly because it stands to primarily effect some of the largest corporations with operations in the UK. Namely companies like Google, Amazon, and Facebook. So basically, a group of small businesses in the Welsh city of Crickhowell have decided to ban together, and use all of the tactics used by giant corporations, to avoid paying taxes. Not because they don't want to pay taxes, but because they want to draw attention to the fact that some of them pay more in taxes than some billion dollar a year corporations. Specifically, they want these giant corporations to pay taxes like everyone else has to. To me, it seems completely fair for these people to do what gigantic corporations do. So long as it draws attention to the fact that things like this can happen. As an American, I also enjoy the irony of the idea of a "tax rebellion in the UK". But seriously, I applaud these business owners. They're putting their governments back against the wall. If the government tries to stop them, it's an obvious move to protect their corporate masters, and if they break down and actually tax these companies making ridiculous amounts of profit, then they lose all their delicious corporate funding.
