I'm looking at used threadripper chips on eBay and noticing a lot of "made in china" on them (titles as well as on the chips themselves). Normally, I'd use that as a red flag to stay away for a higher end item but the whole "let's pretend Taiwan isn't it's own country" thing came to mind and now I gotta know the truth. Is this political BS (China forcing the international community to treat Taiwan as something it isn't, a Chinese province, and that ending up on the actual dies themselves as "made in China") or is this seller BS (a seller selling knockoff goods). Anyone know the answer to this one?

Apparently, AMD uses two chip packaging locations for the Vega GPU for the two main SKUs -- Vega 64 and Vega 56. According to several official slides from AMD, there are minor differences in the physical packaging, depending on the country of origin: AMD uses both Samsung & SK Hynix HBM, Samsung on Vega FE & Vega64, SK Hynix on Vega56 & Vega64 South Korea packed Vega 10s don't have the filling between/around chips Taiwan packed Vega 10s have filling between/around chips The height difference between GPU & HBM is only on the South Korea packed Vega 10s, it's 40 µm, no issues when thermal paste fills the gap Taiwan packed Vega 10s are 0.1mm shorter than South Korea Packed In retail, Vega 64s are supposed to have filling, Vega 56's not Source (french): http://www.tomshardware.fr/articles/radeon-vega-package-gpu-hbm,1-65141.html

Hi Guys, I've came across a meme in a Taiwanese entertainment Facebook page "James Is Curly"(姆士捲) , which translates foreign content into Mandarin Chinese, and saw Linus featured in it and I thought gotta share it to you guys haha XD This meme translated into English as below: Text above(Linus Pic): "Me when playing horror games." Text below: "Me when hearing weird noises in Minecraft." Here's the original Facebook post, which already got over 5K likes in one hour:

My family is Taiwanese, and my mother just purchased a Taiwanese karaoke machine. I have been struggling to figure out what type of music/file format the machine actually uses. I copied some music off of the machine, but my computer/(me) cant make heads or tails of the file format. I think the large file is a video file of some sort, and that .hm2-4 are midi files for the interments. I also think the .hm6 file might be text and or timing info... I do know all of the files are the same song, but i dont know how to interoperate them. The machine comes preloaded with a bunch of Taiwanese songs, and i am trying to figure out if i can add western songs/create new songs to load to the machine. 19111.hd6 19111.hm2 19111.hm3 19111.hm4 19111.hm6 19111.INF

Not many people seemed to notice this, but the iHotel computers from Linus' latest video seem to be running Windows Vista. Isn't that the strangest thing you have ever seen lmao...? I'm surprised Linus didn't touch on it a single time that whole video. I can understand maybe wanting to run Windows 7 or 8, but WHY vista of all operating systems?

So, I have two routers, one is a modem+router provided by the ISP, the other is a netgear nighthawk r6700. I live in Taiwan, while the netgear is from america (i don't know if that will affect anything as i am networking noob, but i thot i shud mention it). So, heres the issue: my mom has an old laptop that can only receive 2.4ghz signal or something like that. If i connect (wirelessly) to the ISP router, speedtest by ookla gives my something like 80-90 mbps (my internet connection is 100mbps i think). If i connect to the netgear router, i only get 40 to 50 mbps. I hav no clue why that is, and i hav been sitting here for an hour trying to sort out this issue. I imagine that the netgear router shud be up to par with the ISP one, not worse. BTW, i have them set at different channels so thats probably not the issue.

Friend bought some LTT edition A14 fans from NCIX on ebay and was surprised to see "Made in China" on the back of the box. I've seen Noctua D15s and a few A15 PWM fans all with "Made in Taiwan" on the boxes so I assumed that the A14 would also be Taiwan.... Where are your Noctua products made in? I wonder if it's only certain models that are made in China or if it applies to all products after a certain manufacture date?

The LTT video of Luke visiting Taiwan internet cafes has been featured in Mandarin (Chinese) subtitles, uploaded today with already 90'000 views, and translated by Taiwan's most popular foreign video translation blog , B.C & Lowy. It's great seeing LTT featured in other languages. Video link: http://vlog.xuite.net/play/NmFzblJ2LTI3NjU0MDc2LmZsdg==?t=25.43&vol=18

Hey guys, Frankly I'm new here, and I may apologize if I had made any mistakes to this post here. I just wanna get some of your opinions and tips while shopping in Taiwan. I currently live in Malaysia and the price of electronics is pretty much through the roof thanks to the currency drop, and since I'm going to Taiwan for a holiday with my family in few months time, and was wondering if I could get a GPU for a cheaper price there. Is buying a GPU in Taiwan a lot more expensive than it is in the US? Becuase if I'm not mistaken, ASUS is a native company there alongside with other popular manufacturer brands. My specs are stated below: Intel Core i7 3770 Asus P8Z77 V Pro Asus GTX 660Ti Corsair AX750 Gold standard Samsung 21.5 inch 1080p monitor I'm starting to feel that my GPU is in a dire need of an upgrade as I notice I can't even hit proper graphics settings on newer games like Doom. I'm planning to get a GTX 970 there but I'm willing to pay more for a futureproof graphics card that would last me for about 4 - 5 extra years for 1080p (maybe even UHD). Is it worth getting the GTX1080 there or should I wait it out for more appropriate cost effective cards like GTX1060/1070 to be released?

Today (18/4) Dell hold a press event in Taiwan, which showed some of their new products that would be launched this year, like the Latitude 13 7000 and Latitude 12 7000. But the most surprising one is the P4317Q. P4317Q (the monitor on the table) Image Credit: Mobile01 Image Credit: Engadget (Traditional Chinese) As the name suggested, this is a 43" monitor. Not many details about this monitor were revealed. According to the news articles from Engadget (Traditional Chinese) and Taiwan tech site Mobile01, the P4317Q is a 4K monitor, with 2 HDMI (MHL) ports、 one mini DP port、one DisplayPort port、a 3.5mm audio jack,a 3 port USB3.0 hub. Other info like panel type, refresh rate, and color support: is still unknown at this point. Since this monitor is under the "P" series, this monitor won't have the same color accuracy and color support as the Ultrasharp series monitors. Image Credit: Mobile01 Image Credit: Mobile01 Those articles also reported that this monitor will be launched in Taiwan in May, while pricing and international availability is still TBA. http://www.mobile01.com/newsdetail.php?id=18464 (in Chinese) http://chinese.engadget.com/2016/04/18/dell-43-in-4k-monitor-p4317q/ (in Chinese)

According to Taiwanese media Eprice.com.tw, Asus today announced the Zenfone 2 128GB variant, with 4GB of ram, will be available in Taiwan on this Thursday, for TWD 11990 (~$388). This should be the first Android phone to come with 128GB built-in storage. This should be one of the a few smartphones featuring a 128GB built-in storage. The official spec of this variant has not yet be revealed. But according to another Taiwanese media Sogi.com.tw , this variant is still under the model number "ZE551ML", just like other Zeonfone 2 4GB ram variant, thus the spec should be the same as other 4GB variant, with the only difference on the storage capacity. Please noted that there is still no info on this variant's pricing and release date worldwide. http://www.eprice.com.tw/mobile/talk/4543/4943161/1/rv/asus-zenfone-2-4g_128g-ZE551ML-launch/(in Chinese) http://www.sogi.com.tw/articles/asus_zenfone_2_128gb/6241789(in Chinese)

Last month Sony announced the Xperia Z4 in Japan, a minor upgraded from the Xperia Z3. Unfortunately at that time the Z4 is a Japan-exclusive smartphone, and there are rumors saying the rest of the world will have a different flagship smartphone. With the latest press conference invitations it seems we will know whether this rumor is true or not next week. A number of tech media in Taiwan and Hong Kong today received invitations to a press conference next week (Taiwan's is on 27/9, while Hong Kong's will be on 28/9)about “the new Xperia flagship”. In the invitations Sony described the new flagship is “Top camera, screen, sound, water and design all rolled into one.” In addition four Sony product development engineers from Japan will attend the Hong Kong press conference to talk about the design of the new models. Unfortunately there is still no much info about this new flagship, and there are only a few rumors about this flagship, saying this flagship will keep the name "Z4", but some rumors saying this will be called "Z3 Plus" instead. Besides Hong Kong and Taiwan, Sony will also held a press conference in New Delhi, India on 26 May, but there is no confirmation from Sony India of whether a new flagship will be announced in that event. On the invite to the Indian event there is a water graphic, which could be hinting at the launch of a water resistant device(s). The M4 Aqua is expected to be announced in that press conference, although there are some rumors saying a new phone will be announced alongside the M4 Aqua too. Hi, I am currently in my second year of university in Ghent, Belgium and there are these programs for studying abroad for one or two semesters. For the ones outside of Europe we need to give a top 3 and a motivation for the first choice. My choices currently are: -Taiwan (National Sun Yat-Sen University) -USA (University of Illinois, Chicago) -USA (Baruch College - City University of New York) Since the USA ones are usually the most popular ones, I'm thinking about putting Taiwan as my first choice. But I don't really know that much about Taiwan outside of HTC (i'm a huge fan) being there, so I am wondering if it is worth studying there for (half) a year... So I have some questions: What language do they speak there? (I am fluent in English, Dutch, German and French, do I need to start learning Taiwanese?) How modern is the country? (high speed internet? everyone having 4g and stuff like that?) Are the people cool/nice/friendly? How different is it to normal EU countries? (I have visited most european countries but i have never left the EU)? How is studying there? Any important things I need to know about the country/ about living there? Please feel free to answer any of my questions, even if you aren't from Taiwan Thanks in advance guys!

I was recently looking for a new gpu since I am running a barebones GTX 660. I was going through my options when I stumbled upon a perplexing result under the GTX 780 search. I was aware that there were a lot of scams going around on ebay but this just took the ridiculousness to a whole new level. Why in the world would someone buy this? It is literally a green PCB off of what looks like an OEM entry level card from 2007 with a poorly made heatsink with cheap paper stickers placed on the fans. I never really thought of a bootleg graphics card market so coming across this listing really showed me a whole new slew of ways somebody can scam you. What is keeping somebody from placing a 780 heatsink on a 680 etc.. I think this listing should show you guys that if you see something too good to be true on eBay... IT IS! So please be wary about what you buy and if you have any concerns the forum community is more than willing to help out.

Apple was fined NT$20 million by Taiwan's Fair Trade Commission, and ordered Apple to stop influencing the iPhone price offers from carriers and re-sellers. Apple was fined as they violated the Fair Trade Act by telling carriers and distributors how much they should charge for iPhones despite already having sold them distribution rights. http://vr-zone.com/articles/taiwan-ftc-fines-apple-nt20-million-meddling-carriers-iphone-pricing/67893.html

QNAP, the famous NAS manufacturer, has just revealed their first network switch. Their first switch is called "QSW-1208-8C", a 12-port-10GbE unmanaged switch. It has 4 SFP+ 10GbE port, and 8 mixed ports, which consist of 8 SFP+ ports and 8 10GBase-T RJ45 port. You can use either the SFP+ or RJ45 port, but not at the same time for those 8 ports (Remember this is a 12 ports (8 mixed ports+4 SFP+ ports) switch!). It also come with a low noise design, nicely-crafted chassis, and a switching capacity up to 240Gbps. Pricing and release date is still unknown at this moment, but QNAP is launching a public testing program for this switch in Taiwan, which you could apply, and buy the switch for NT$8800 (~$290) if you attend a 10GbE event held by QNAP in Taipei on 3rd May. In that event, QNAP will be showcasing their 10GbE solutions and accessories in different environment. Noted that this public testing only takes 100 people, and pricing may be higher than NT$8800 when it officially launch. No words on whether this public testing program will launch elsewhere in the world. The 10GbE event page is in Chinese, but a reddit user "dunkurs1987" translated the portion about "QSW-1208-8C" in English. QNAP has been pushing advanced features, like VM, 10GbE, and SSD Caching for a long time. Making this 10GbE switch is a step to complete their 10G product line. As 10G switches is now getting cheaper and cheaper (for example Buffalo recently released 2 10GbE switches, which could also run 2.5G and 5G, for ~$880 (12 ports) and ~$570 (8 ports)), upgrading to 10G is getting cheaper and cheaper. Also I like the mixed port design, which you need not to choose between going SFP/SFP+ or RJ45. It could potentially saving money upgrading network adapters and cables. On spec the switch looks great, and I hope their switches in the future will follow this mixed ports design, with more and more ports. https://www.qnap.com/static/landing/2017/10gbe-ready-event-0503/index.html (in Chinese) *update on 26/04/2017: an iperf test of this switch was ran and filmed (probably a pre-production unit).... https://nas.world/43-全民 10gbe-來了-qsw-1208-8c-封測包.html (in Chinese)
