Upgrade Feedback - AMD, Intel, or just GPU
TheWhiteRose000 posted a topic in New Builds and Planning
Alright, So here's my question of the hour a lot of my friends have been hounding me about getting "more cores" for my system and It's been a few years. I've been living overseas and haven't had much in the way of upgrading I managed to snag a Devils Canyon for cheap off of ebay and subsequently the same with my motherboard. But with tax returns on the horizon in the U.S. I'm wondering if I should just do a full modern system upgrade but I want it to be more effective for editing YouTube videos and making content. So my question is basically should I keep my current system or just build a new rig but keep my core components. Current system CPU: Intel 4790K (Soon to be OC'd to 4.8ghz) Motherboard: Gigabyte Z87 OC RAM: 2400mhz 32gb Team Group Boot Drive: Gigabyte 500gb SSD SATA III GPU: Gigabyte RX570 8GB (Runs at 8X) (Runs at 8X) Game Drive: Intel 660P Expansion Card 1: PCIe MVNE Adaptor Expansion Card 2: PCIe Elgato 4K Capture card The current plan is just to purchase a 2080ti or similar and minimize performance loss by OC'ing the CPU to 4.8ghz to minimize the bottleneck. Bandwidth wise I'd be losing 3% of its total speed if my math is right because it's acting as a PCIe 2.0 slot in essence. My friends suggested that I just build a new system with newer RAM, CPU, and Motherboard in which I forego the 2080ti for a new CPU instead which leaves me with two opitions. AMD System CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 3950 RAM: 3600mhz Corsair Vengeance 32gb RGB kit Motherboard: Gigabyte X570 Aorus Intel System CPU: Intel Series 9900K Coffee Lake RAM: 3600mhz Corsair Vengeance 32gb RGB kit Motherboard: Gigabyte Z390 The biggest issues I face is normally related to recording quality I want to upgrade my quality of footage but not lose system performance. Software wise the biggest things I use are generally OBS and Wondershare filmora and I record at 1080p but I want to have expandibility for streaming down the line. I like the appeal of the 2080ti as their NvENC can free up my CPU usage for gaming to balance out more of what I'd generally use in terms of performance. My budget with my tax return would be around $1000 US since I make just trash in terms of a paycheck. What's everyones thought's, feedback, concerns, ect any information would help. Should I go a more core CPU? stick with my plan with the 2080ti and upgrade my system down the road? I really need to make my purchase count as in my case this system will have to last me for several years.- 24 replies

So i upgraded from a Xeon E3 to Ryzen7-1700 PC only works in win10 safe mode everything else insta-BSODs. I have tried pretty much everything and I think the problem might be the lack of chipset drivers which i cant install in safe mode. This PC is used mainly as a server host. So i can try pretty much any crazy / advanced ideas on solving this problem But : Reinstalling windows is not an option Losing any data from this drive is not an option What have i tried : Selective Startup Flashing different bioses onto my mobo Changing the ram stick Created an iso file for windows repair (havent managed to do anything with it yet) Tried several different voltage settings

upgrade advice Need some advice about what to do...
takkischitt posted a topic in New Builds and Planning
Hi folks Really need some quality advice and thought here might be a good place to ask. So, I'm considering an upgrade of the following system with the parts I want to upgrade in red: Case: Enthoo Evolv ATX Tempered Glass Motherboard: Asus P8Z68-V Gen 3 CPU: Intel Core i5 2500K OC'd @ 4.50GHz Cooler: Corsair A50 CPU Cooler RAM: Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz + Corsair Vengeance 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz GPU: Zotac GeForce GTX 1070 AMP Edition 8192MB GDDR5 PSU: XFX XTR SERIES 650W Modular Power Supply I've been looking online at various bundles, deals and buying parts individually but there a few things confusing me so I'll list them below and maybe some of you kind folks can help me out: First of all, I'm not too worried about costs. I just want to get the best value for my needs. So I don't want to just blow a fortune for the absolute fastest of something which I'll not really get full use out of, but I am happy to pay more if it's going to last me better in the long run. I game a fair bit and generally like to run graphics pretty flat out (usually at 1080 -1440 res, but will probably like to dabble in 4K in future, maybe after a couple of years and after a GPU upgrade). I also do a bit of video editing, nothing major though - home video/GoPro footage, etc. What about Ryzen? I see so much arguing and fighting back and forth between the Intel and AMD fans and I'm struggling to see past it all. Are Ryzen really as good value as they're made out to be? Are Intel chips really much better and justify their higher prices? I want an upgrade that's going to last well, just like the 2500K has. I was considering an 8086K or 8700K, but I'm just not sure if it is overkill when you've got the likes of the Ryzen 1700X going for £150 at the minute which has a good core count and reasonable speeds (even if it's single core/gaming might not be quite as good, it's still only 10-15% off in FPS, right?) What about the security issues Intel are having with their chips, and the apparently 'fixes' which also may be slowing down the chips quite a bit? Would it be best to wait a while until their new chips come out to see if they've fixed the issues and there's no worries about slowdown from patches? Also, with RAM prices still so extremely high, and possibly one of the sorest parts of this upgrade for me, is there any sign they may be coming down any time soon and I should hold off? Here are some builds I've been toying with, opinions on those would also be helpful: Budget Ryzen Upgrade [ Ryzen 7 1700X -- Cooler Master MasterLiquid ML120L RGB -- Gigabyte GA-AX370-Gaming K5 -- G.Skill - Trident Z RGB 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3200 ] PC Upgrade Selection (June 2018) [ i5-8600K -- Cooler Master MasterLiquid ML240L RGB -- Asus TUF Z370 Pro Gaming -- Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 ] PC Upgrade Selection (August 2018) [ i7-8086K -- Corsair H105 -- Asus ROG MAXIMUS X HERO -- Corsair Vengeance RGB 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3600 -- Intel 760p Series 512GB ] Another 8086K bundle [ i7-8086K -- Corsair H100i v2 -- Gigabyte Z370 AORUS Ultra Gaming (rev. 1.0) -- G.Skill Trident Z RGB 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3200 ] Thanks for the help. -
I ordered a 240GB SSD yesterday and plan on adding it to my current PC, which currently has a mostly full 750GB hard drive. I wanted to use the SSD for games, a boot drive, and for things that usually take longer to load, like Photoshop. All the tutorials I've found online just explain how to copy an entire hard drive to an SSD, but I don't want to do that, and can't do that. Any way I can selectively transfer Windows, my games, and other select programs on to my new drive? Thanks

Hi everyone, I am a new member and this is my first post. At first I apologize for asking a noob question. My old system got so old and I desperately need to upgrade it. I would like to build a mid range gaming PC with 1080p display. I prefer keeping my old ASUS Vx229h monitor for now. I have selected : Core i5 6600K Gigabyte GA-Z170X-Gaming 7 G.SKILL RIPJAWS-V 8GB 3200BUS * 2 My current Graphics card is MSI GTX 650TI OC. Will there be any bottleneck if I keep my current graphics card with the parts I have selected? If bottleneck happens, is ASUS STRIX-GTX970-DC2OC is a good choice? Thanks in advance.

Hey guys. So i'm planning on doing a pretty big upgrade, practically buying a new computer by what I've come up with. I want to do a Quad HD build particularly. My current specs are: Intel i5 4690K Devil's Canyon ASRock Z97E-ITX/ac mobo Corsair Vengeance 8gb kit EVGA GTX 960 Rosewill Photon 750 Watt PS Corsair H100i cpu cooler Corsair Obsidian 250D So my aim is to keep the CPU, cooler, and RAM kit if possible, and buy everything else new. And see if I can build a decent Quad HD setup. The new parts would be: Corsair Air 540 ASRock Fatal1ty Z97X Killer mobo EVGA GeForce 970 (Possibly 2, and totally open to suggestions) That's my basic parts I want to change. I want to ask the forum for more parts, ideas, and whatnot. My budget is 800 USD, but am willing to go to 1000 USD. Also yes, I need a 1000 watt PS at least, but I'm not sure what to get at the moment. Thank you in advance for the help

Hey Guys! I'm planning to get a new rig soon and I was looking around the GPU section. I've been wondering if its worth to get a GTX970 over a 4GB GTX960 if it means sacrificing a 120$ from my fixed budget. That would mean no SSD and stock cooler on the CPU if I do it now. As the 4GB GTX960 I would like to get the Gigabyte one with the 2X Windforce cooler. If I would pick up a GTX970 I don't know which one yet but probably one of the MSI ones. Also as upgradeability I thought if I will ever need more GPU performance I would pick up an other one of it and run it in SLI. If would have a bigger budget I probably would pick up a 970 but to get that much money it would mean to wait until at least Christmas. I could also get everything except the GPU and roll with my GTS450 till I get the money but that seams a bit weird.

Hallo, my current system is (yes i know it's crappy): CPU: http://ark.intel.com/products/53422/Intel-Core-i3-2100-Processor-3M-Cache-3_10-GHz Video card: nvidia geforce GT 520 Motherboard: https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P8H61_PLUS/ RAM: 4 GB ddr3 at 1600Mhz PSU: random 500W power supply HDD: random 500gb disk And in order to save some money from buying a clean new system, i was thinking to keep my CPU, my motherboard and my HDD and then upgrade to a nvidia gtx-960, 8gb ram and also change the PSU because it really makes a lot of noise and needs to be replaced. What do you think about this? Will I be albe to play the newest game tittles then, or would i notice bottlenecking? PS: Im also thinking of buying an SSD just enough to store the OS and one or too games at a time, but that's not the main point here

Hi all. Afraid this is going to be a long post but please stick it out. I am hoping for some advice on which direction to go with my system and I want some views to help me decide. I have saved up some money to upgrade and I have 2 options in mind. I am thinking about buying an extra GPU to crossfire with my MSI HD 7970. However my system is over 4 years old (which I appreciate isn't too old) so alternately I am thinking of upgrading the CPU, MB, and memory instead for reasons below. My current system is: Intel i7 930 (LGA 1366) Asus Rampage II Gene (X58) OCZ 6GB (3x2GB) 1600MHz DDR3 Intel 520 120GB SSD (OS Drive) Seagate 1TB (contains all my documents, games, etc.) OCZ 600W PSU semi-modular (which I will have to upgrade with I decide to crossfire) CoolIT ECO A.L.C. CPU Cooler (which is rubbish) Thermaltake Armor Revo Gaming Case (looking to buy a Corsair 350D to replace it) MSI HD 7970 Lighting Boosted Edition The GPU I would buy is the MSI HD 7970 Lightning as it is cheaper than the boosted edition buy over £100. However I am considering upgrading my system so wanted some thoughts as to which would be the best direction to go and provide the best performance. The reasons for upgrading my CPU, MB, & memory are a few. My X58 chip on my motherboard runs very hot (60-70C at idle, no overclock) and restricted me when overclocking my CPU as I didn't want the temperatures to go much higher. Reading online the X58 seems to run hot normally. I tried to solve this issue by zip-tying a 40mm fan over it which did help to bring the temps down a bit. However I have now had to remove it since I moved my GPU card to the other slot, thereby preventing it to fit. I moved my GPU because where it was it was covering a SATA connector which I needed. I was bending the connector preventing it from working and I didn't want any permanent damage so thats why I moved the GPU. (If I buy another card, I will have to no longer use that sata connector). Also there is no USB 3.0 support, the PCI-E lanes are 2.0 and I believe something is failing in my system ( I have put the information about it at the end of this post because it is quite long and not everyone may want to read it. Any help about it will be greatly appreciated. ) The parts I am thinking about buying if I do upgrade my system are: Intel i7-4770k Gigabyte Z97MX - Gaming 5 Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 Micro ATX Motherboard Kingston HyperX Beast 16GB (4x4GB) 2400MHz Quad Channel Kit Corsair Hydro H80i Cooler Keep everything else (therefore stick with 1 GPU) The question I have is which would be a better performance; buying another graphics card and crossfiring or upgrade my system? I mostly game and do lot of video converting through handbrake. I recently bought Watch Dogs and I've noticed that has much greater system requirements than any other games I own so my thought is many new games to be released may be similar so the system upgrade may be worth it? If you guys are still with me, please read below about my hardware issues. My Potential Hardware Issues So I think some of my hardware is beginning to fail. I am running some test nows but maybe someone here might have some thoughts as to what it is. I have been getting quite a few BSOD (ID: 2057). They are not consistent when I am getting them, but it is when I start to push my system. Far Cry 3 commonly crashes my system with Assassin's Creed IV also doing it occasionally. I overclocked my CPU about a year ago from 2.8GHz to 3.2GHz (not ground breaking I know but it was my first overclock). Anyway it seemed stable. I had run prime95 for 24 hours no problem. Multiple IntelBurnTest no problem. I had played many games and no issue at all. It seemed to be running very stable. However last January my secondary HDD failed and Windows 8 wouldn't boot. It kept going into a repair boot loop (which seems to be a common issue). I just bought a new HDD and started from scratch, reinstalled and staying with Windows 7. At that time I installed Hackingtosh as well, but OS X was never stable. After running a few tests I found that my overclock was no longer stable even in windows and crashed....a lot. I thought it was very strange how my overclock went from being pretty stable for 6 months without a single crash to being very unstable. I'm at university and I had a lot of work and no time so I just returned my BIOS settings to default removing the overclock and it seemed to run fine for a while. Since easter however I found that it was crashing a lot and after running prime95 my computer always gets BSOD (always ID: 2057) or the following errors for both worker #5 & #6: "FATAL ERROR: Rounding was 0.5, expected less than 0.4" "Hardware failure detected, consult stress.txt file" "Worker Stopped" Sometimes this can occur 5 mins after starting or 5 hours. (I am unable to find any stress.txt file as well) I ran two Memtests with 0 errors (4 hours and 12 hours). Anyone have any thoughts as to what it may be? This was quite a long post so thanks for sticking with me. Any thoughts or suggested improvements on which direction to go on my system upgrade would be much appreciated, along with what may be tripping my current computer. Thanks in advance for all your replies.

Hi everybody, I have a single EGGA gtx 780sc, my processor is an i7-4770, my psu is a corsair cx750 and I have 32gb of ram. I'm thinking about adding another 780 for my system, but I have a lot of doubts. Will my system handle just addind the second gpu or I will have to change other stuff like the psu? If I change the 780 for a 780ti will it be better for gamming? Thanks, sorry I'm from Brazil and my english isn't that great... João www.lab804.com.br

Okay, so ever since the GTX 780 was announced, I've been trying to make enough money to buy one. I would have one by now, but my tax code got messed up two months in a row so I was paying far more tax than I should have been. I'm now glad that I couldn't buy one straight away because EVGA released their ACX cooled one within that period (I think). Anyway, I've now got my tax code sorted out, so come the 25th, I'm selling my GTX 670 and ordering the EVGA GTX 780 SC with ACX cooler from NCIX.com. Even with shipping, this card is cheaper to order from Canada than it is to buy a reference Palit GTX 780 here. (I live in the UK) Just thought I'd let you guys know. ps. I'll post some photos of it when I get the beast. Maybe some benchmarks too at both 5760x1080 and 1920x1080.
