So I am currently upgrading my pc and changing out a lot of components and Im considering upgrading my motherboard (it’s the only thing that’s still from my old system). I have a few questions about the process of changing motherboards. I am changing cases and cooling system so I’m not directly swapping my motherboard out, rather installing it into my new system (basically a fresh build.) I’m going from a ASROCK b450m pro4-f to a MSI b550 tomohawk max. Do I have to do anything special when booting up after assembling the pc? As in deleting old bios (idk how to do that), updating the bios, or doing anything else involving ram drivers or software? Or anything not mentioned.

Hello, don't really know if this is the right place to post this, please direct me to the correct place if so I bought a pair of Large Sweatpants during the sale days but, it turns out I really need a pair of Mediums. If anyone has a pair of lightly worn or new Mediums that you got during the sale, I will gladly do a swap. I havent worn my sweatpants for more than 10 minutes. and YES WITH UNDERWEAR lol. Will obviously wash and fold before I send to you

Ahoy! (I hope this is the right category for this?) It's late at night and that means I am ready to upgrade my computer. I have acquired a Noctua NH-D15S CPU cooler to replace my Stock AMD cooler, as well as a new case; the Fractal Design Meshify 2 Compact - or as I like to call it: a mouthful. I am prepared to build it, I got all kinda tools and everything, but I wanted to ask the community, what would your steps be to take on this endeavor? I hope me asking this isn't trivial or whatever, I am just a bit nervous is all. This is my first time doing a case transfer. Thank you for your help! EDIT: The upgrade has been completed! I successfully installed the new CPU Cooler and swapped all my components into the new case. It is wonderfully quiet and works flawlessly now. I will now note however the things that caused me issues or other noteworthy things: Firstly, the fact that there are 300 billion types of screws that came shipped with the case, are not labelled. I mean if you look in the manual it vaguely says what the screw is and where it goes, but the shape is not always clear.. I am still not completely sure if I installed the right screws into the MB, but they screwed in smoothly, so I guess it's fine? Talking about the screwing in, it was a nightmare. The screwholes barely aligned unless I forced the MB to rotate just enough so that the screws could fit inside. And what also did not help, was the fact that the top center screw could not be screwed in, as the cooler interfered with it. Sooo now I am missing one screw but I guess it's fine? Also the center screw could not be used. There's this nipple thing in the case which protrudes outwards, so that one screw would not be necessary. Soo now I have two screws laying about collecting dust I guess. Whatever. What was also a bit nightmarish was the power button. These tiny single-pin connectors were so tough to plug inside.. and to *stay* inside. What also didn't help was the location of the SYS-FAN1 connector. It's near the center of the MB. And the cable for the front-fans is too short to reach, soo I can't really control them in Dragon Center. If I were to get some fan hub I guess I could control them, but I honestly don't think that's necessary. That's it. It took me about four hours in total, from disassembling the old case and components to inserting them all in the new one. It was an enlightening experience, and I am very happy with the outcome. I would like to thank the user kb5zue for assisting me in this process. It is people like him that help me reinforce the belief, that nice people do exist out there, and we can all come together to help each other out, even the inexperienced. Thank you so very much. This is Ralph, signing out.

Current specs: AMD Ryzen 5 1600 Six-Core 3.2 GHz (typically overclocked, I have really good thermals) 8gb(2x) 2133 MHz (It's mixed and throttled as a result; I plan on upgrading it in the future) NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 (EVGA) MSI B450 GAMING PLUS MAX Four drives of storage, totaling about 3tb of storage (I plan on changing this to one or two large drives, but not soon) Windows 10 Home 64-bit What's swapping: AMD Ryzen 5 1600 Six-Core 3.2 GHz to AMD Ryzen 9 5900x Twelve-Core 3.7 GHz MSI B450 GAMING PLUS MAX to MSI MPG X570 GAMING PLUS Motherboard General Notes: The old motherboard is labelled as "AMD Ryzen 3000 Desktop Ready," with the new motherboard being labelled as "AMD Ryzen 3000 Desktop Ready" and "AMD Ryzen 5000 Desktop Ready." I do not plan to typically have the new cpu overclocking, since I do not foresee any upgrades or changes regarding it once this is finished and want to prolong its life expectancy. I play a lot of games, varying in technical complexity and optimization, and occasionally have overnight blender renders, so I stress the machine at seemingly random intervals throughout any given week. Question: How should I go about changing these two parts? My main concerns are that either 1) I will need to spend extra money for someone else to finish what I start because of a niche issue, or 2) I lose data on my drives, since I have amassed a little bit a lot over the past few years. I can work off of general guidance, but a step-by-step checklist and guide of pre-teardown things to do and what to do during the swapping would be much better for me, and I can't find anything particularly elaborate online describing how to go through something like this that is at all recent. I don't have any general limitations beyond raw budget, so if something needs to be downloaded onto a flash drive or anything like that just assume that I can do that as well, with some form of provided guidance that is... Thanks!

Is it possible to swap the i5-2400 cpu with an i5-3470 cpu without changing the motherboard on the HP compaq 8200? Something like a bios update? Does anyone know?

Good Day, My Specs: Full Alphacool water cooling loop Ryzen 7 3700x with Alphacool Eisbaer 360 CPU x570 aorus elite 1080ti with (Alphacool Eiswolf ) Team group 32GB 3600mhz Ram. EVGA Super Nova 1000p2 (1000w) So I swapped my PSU to a more powerful one today and changed my CPU thermal paste to Kryonaut. After swapping these two things my cpu temps start at 40C instantly and gradually (quickly) rises to 95C. Hitting a sweet 107C recently before shutting off. I never had this problem before the swap. Looking into the see through panel of the CPU cooler i noticed some white small particles floating in the loop. Could this have caused the sudden extreme temperature rise in idle? Or, Could it be the thermal paste? (I don't have any other paste to test). I'm truly lost I have reapplied and tightened all i could tighten with 0 success. Any help would be greatly appreciated ask away if you require extra info

Listen up folks I got a story to tell... Yesterday, a friend of mine that's new to PC building, asked If we could swap CPU's since we both have an FM2/+ CPU in our PCs, and also he would give me 50€ to which I agreed since I'm kinda greedy :). But here's the Deal, I told him to Update bis BIOS of his MSI A88X something something Motherboard, since I was giving him an Athlon X4 845 and so he did as I told him to. His BIOS Version was 6.50 if anyone thinks he might have gotten the wrong version. (Carrizo support was included 2 BIOS Versions earlier.) So the swap began, and because I couldn't help him (since he's living with his parents who think of me as the Satan himself) he had to do it himself. Important note 1: He did neither unplug the PC from the wall, nor did he turn off the switch on the Psu when fiddeling around in his PC. Important note 2: He was stabbing around in his CMOS battery with his Pocketknife (Not to Sure why though) Now to the actual problem, he fires up the PC. Black Screen. No Signal. Fans spin, peripherals light Up. Yet, No Signal. Reminder: Testing via iGP, Not possible, since the X4 845 has no integrated graphics solution. It's quite the read but thanks in advance anyways.

Hi! I'm getting started on some studies this summer, and I was thinking of selling my desktop rig and going for a capable laptop or tablet that I can bring with me everywhere. There are many options to choose from, so I though I would ask here for your opinions and experiences. I'm thinking of either getting a fully capable laptop with a good GPU, a laptop and a GPU dock, or perhaps even getting a tablet like the Surface with a GPU dock, but as far as I know there's only one ASUS tablet that has Thunderbolt 3.0 which I think you need for these GPU docks. I'm going from a rig with an OC'd 5820k and a 1070, so I'm not expecting to get equal performance on a laptop. I do, however, need something quick, and something with at least "desktop-1060" graphical performance. I've got a 4K monitor that I'm planning to use with the laptop, as well as an HTC Vive that there's no way I'm giving up! Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. My budget is on the high end since I will be selling my rig, but I'll probably be looking for something in the $2000 (maybe towards $3000) range. Thanks!

I have a msi All in one desktop. The 320gb HDD that came with it is now full and I wanted to swap it out for a new 2tb HDD. After unplugging the PC, slapping on my anti static wrist strap (I created restore media), I pulled the 320gb drive, slapped in the 2tb and it doesn't post. The HDD status light stays on. Please help

On my PC, I run different installations of Windows and Linux. To prevent any kind of malware from one crossing over to the other or other 'accidents' like Windows formatting Linux drives on the anniversary updates, I ensure that every time I want to run an installation, I simply disconnect all other drives from my PC. My question is: is there not a way to do this with the flip of a switch? So something like a 5.25" controller which allows you to control which drive is connected and which isn't?

Hey fist time on this forum I'm planning to switch from an atx z170-a to a itx z170i pro gaming motherboard, both asus, because i want to downsize to a smaller case that is easy to carry with me when i go to lans. I have tried to research what to expect when swapping out your motherboard and its hard to get any information on if it's possible without a totalt restart of your OS. I really like my OS setup now and coming from an apple background i find it very frustrating that i would have to start from scratch. so my question is: 1. can you swap a motherboard without having to do a total reset of OS. (keep in mind they are both asus, dont know if that has any influence) 2. if not is there any way to make a safety copy of your settings and programs that you can install on a reset OS. (like you can do with an apple). 3. how does it work with windows keys if i have to reinstall my os? i have my old key, but can i use it again or will i have to buy a new one? Hope someone has some experience with this

I was wondering if I could swap the motherboard I'm currently using, for another motherboard I just bought without doing a full reinstall of Windows 10? With it I also want to change from Intel Xeon E5-2670 V2 to I7-3930K, and the 'new' motherboard supports overclocking where the other one doesn't. I swapped the CPU's and thought I could overclock on my old mobo with Extreme Tuning Utility, but apparently, this doesn't work. It's not really a problem installing new windows, but it wil save me a lot of time of reinstalling all the software I'm currently using.

Hi, I just ordered a new motherboard for my system that I built a few years ago as well as a new graphics card. I know swapping out a graphics card is quick and easy just change it out and reboot. But, to change the motherboard, will it recognize my current windows install or will I need a fresh hard drive and fresh windows install? Like can I just swap the board and expect it to boot from the same hard drive or will that not work? Id rather not reinstall Windows and everything. Also, the new board is for the same CPU socket as before and still made by Asus, just a better model.

Hello people of the internet. I am fairly unfamiliar with how the swap partition works other than it switches over to using that when most of the ram is used up. However, I just installed rainmeter and looking at the at the system display thing it says that my swap usage is 38% even though my RAM usage is 42%. I have 16GB or ram, is this normal? Here is a screenshot of the info. If i'm just misunderstanding all of this please tell me lol.

Current PC: GA-Z270-HD3 + G4560 + 16GB @3GHz + 600W Bronze PSU + 1TB HDD, I was planning to get an i5-7600K and an RX 560 4GB by December or January, just for casual streaming and light gaming. Last week, I've been doing some "research" about Ryzen and I'm wondering if I should go for this: X370 + 1500X + same RAM + same PSU + same HDD, sell current motherboard & CPU and get an RX 560 and a 240GB SSD by early 2018. By the way, motherboard & CPU are only 2 months old, how much $ should I expect to get for both?

Hey guys, i have a little nut to crack... and... i think it's stupid on top too...but, doesnt asks, doesnt get ^^ So i'd have a spare 1060 and my dad has Alienware 15 with 970m which could use the upgrade. The question is, will it fit... I noticed that the clevo has a bit different PCB with what looks like aditional power connecter, https://store.alezka.com/en/laptop-gpus/10-nvidia-gtx-1060-6gb-mxm-clevo.html then the 970m. https://store.alezka.com/en/laptop-gpus/4-gtx-970m.html it's most def. stupid question but, doesnt asks, doesnt gets ^^ And it might be easier to try to swap with a bit of DIY, then to try to sell it and buy another... Cheers

Do hot swap bays have any malwareable storage? Any firmware or anything similar? I image they'd only be cables at the end of the day but I'm not sure if they have any on board circuits with firmware.

I want to change my laptop's HDD with a SSD. However I have some concerns of the process, mainly backuping the data from the laptop. What is the best way to do it? I'm thinking about using the SATA to USB enclosure that I have to transfer data from laptop to the SSD, then from the SSD to my pc (1). Or can I use the enclosure to directly transfer from laptop's HDD to the PC (2)? I guess (1) is a bit safer in terms of data loss and probably will work better. However I still have some questions: Should I format the SSD before transfering data to it, or its factory formated? This is a dumb one, but once in the enclosure, the SSD/HDD is basically a huge USB "flash" drive, I can use on both the PC and the laptop for anything, besides boot drive? If I use (1) and transfer everything to my PC( everything from laptop is backuped) do I need to format the SSD or I can just install it in the laptop and put on OS? Once everything is done and I format the HDD to use it for an external one, do I need to defragment it?

Please forgive me if this is a stupid question; I currently have an i-6500 (non-k) as my current CPU, Z170XP MB, and a Hyper 212 cooler. I got some unexpected bonus, and decided to nab an i7-7700k (new). I know it should fit the same LGA-1151 socket, but regarding the swap, do I need to do anything else besides the following: 0. UPGRADE BIOS 1. Power off PC 2. Disconnect PSU 3. Disconnect CPU cooler fan, and remove CPU cooler 4. Clean off old thermal paste 5. Remove i5 6. Install i7 7. Apply a correct amount of new thermal paste 8. Reinstall CPU cooler and reconnect fan 9. Reconnect PSU 10. Experience glory? *Edit* Thank you everyone for the swift and informative replies *Edit 2* Updated BIOS without breaking anything (thank you @Pharr Carnell)
