Hi, I wanna get an eGPU (probably a 2060 or maybe a 3060/70 if those are in my budget) My laptop is a Surface Pro 2017 / 5 which doesnt have usb-c, thunderbolt or access to mPCIe slots. Any ideas? Is there a way to connect it over the usb 3.1 gen 1 port? (5gbps) I know it would be slow, but i dont think that would really matter if im not using it for graphic applications. I will be building a pc some time in the future (a year or 2 away tho) once I have enough money, so I will be buying a graphics card and PSU anyway. thanks heaps, jensen

My current PC is almost 10 years old and starting to have some issues. I'd like to upgrade/replace it but I'm having difficulty deciding with what. I'm currently working as a software developer, and I'll be going back to school next semester. I'd ideally like to have some sort of laptop for school and potentially work (not as necessary). I used to play a games a lot more but now I pretty much just play League or Elden Ring on occasion. I like the idea of using the same computer across the board rather than switching between a laptop and desktop, but for the price of a lot of laptops I feel like you sacrifice quite a bit of power compare to the price of PC components. My primary use cases are: software development, Unity game development, Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop, & After Effects, light gaming My current build: i7-4790k RTX 2070 16GB DDR3 1TB Samsung 860 Evo + 4TB & 1TB WD HDD I was considering either a Surface Pro 8/Surface Laptop + a docking station or: i7-11700k 32GB DDR4 Crucial P5+ SSD RTX 2070 (keep the same one) + a lower spec laptop, but not really sure on what would be good here Any recommendations on a PC upgrade + laptop, or pure laptop would be greatly appreciated as I'm struggling to decide. Thank you!

Basically last night, my surface pro x updated windows, and this morning i wake up and i the surface slim pen doesnt work. I tried removing it as a connected bluetooth device and pairing it again, but it doesnt work. the weird part is that it still detects it, when i click the top button of my pen, it still responds and lets me take a screenshot of the screen, however when i put the tip of the pen on the screen, it doesnt detect anything. another odd thing is that the wifi button completely disappeared, i cant connect to the internet now.

Hey LTT community. I am currently looking for the best laptop for my high school/general use next year and a few have caught my eye. Sadly I am having a great deal of trouble deciding between the ones I have seen. So far my top picks are The EVE V The HP Spectre X2 (new version) The Microsoft surface pro. If you guys could help me decide between these three or suggest something even better that would be great. (My price range is between 1000 and 1500 dollars though I might be able to squeeze a bit more. I am looking for form factors 15 inches or under and a 2 in 1 is the most preferable. Thanks - Ethan.

Since the price has been slashed, I am looking for a surface pro 4. The thing is i already have a pretty powerful gaming desktop as well as macbook air i7, my main use for the surface will be note taking in conferences and maybe some algorithm sketchwork(i meant like before writing a code, i usually try to come up with algorithm and for doing that i do a lot of rough works, but i intend to save all of them for future reference), and might be used for some light programing. So is surface pro 4 m3 is good enough for my needs as note taking and sketching algorithms? Or do I really need the i5 model? Thanks in advance.

Hello everyone! Now it's no secret that I'm a macOS fan... Having a MacBook Pro and a home-made, custom built Hackintosh to run macOS with all the perks of having a PC. But I'm not stupid either and I can recognise when theres performance degradation thats becoming a problem and holds me from doing my work. So my budget is going to be £800, enough for second hand variants of the following systems: 256GB/8GB Microsoft Surface Pro 4 and the HP zBook 15u G2 Ultrabook. Along with my college work, I need it to do 3D animations, modelling, After Effects and Premiere Pro. With sketching being a secondary concern, also on a side note I do wish to learn virtual sculpting and 2D Animations. Gaming is also secondary! So wise people of the LTT-community, which do you think I should go for?

Hi All, I just got a surface pro 3 and did a fresh install of windows 10 pro, after allowing all the windows updates to install, I then upgraded to the latest insider build (16299) which I have on 2 other machines and have lost access to the windows store. I can open it via wsreset.exe however the icon doesn't appear on the taskbar and I am unable to search of the store or find it in the start menu apps list. The same thing happens on another user account. I'm using the same Microsoft account on all 3 devices and only the new surface pro 3 has this issue. Any help is appreciated, Thanks

Hello, I'm new here and that's my first post, anyhow, I have a YouTube channel and I use Adobe premiere, Photoshop, etc as graphic designer college student. I have an Asus ROG gx551gl Ram 16GB (I don't know how to overock) Gtx 950m 2GB Core i7 4720HQ 1TB HDD 265 SSD 6 pounds around 3kg A quite heavy laptop that has issues with sound, (goes higher by it self after pausing a video or music or anything) - help if you know how solve it! Anyhow, aside from that I want to upgrade, and I really loved the surface product, Because they're high end, and built well, but! (Linus voice tune) I had a very bad windows experince so far and issues with my machine. I don't game, I have Xbox for that but I do work and design and create... So I want your advice on my next device A surface product with the horrible windows (I'm afraid) or Going to be on the apple side with a MacBook Pro? (It's stable my friends says) And I'm concerned about the consumer reports as well for the surface product. Budget $2000 max Goal: light powerful laptop, with good build quality. Suit a student and graphic designer that works 27/789 days a week. I'm all ears ,, and thanks. - Aorex.

If you haven't used it please don't comment. For anyone who has used it, how has your experience been? I've been trying to sell my SP3 for a while because of all the random glitches and driver issues, and I'm looking to replace it with the base 32gb iPad Pro 9.7" (that I'll buy used for around $300) and an Apple Pencil (that I'll also used around $80). I know that the iPad is "less" powerful than the SP3 since one is a full desktop experiece yadda yadda, but A) I don't need that, and B) that's part of the problem -- Windows on a touch screen is really just shit.

Hey All, I've run into an issue here at work that has me stumped. A coworker has a new Surface Pro 4 running Windows 10, whose type cover mostly works, save for the 'z' 'x' 'c' and 'v' keys. Those four keys simply don't respond. She had this issue right out of the gate. I'm only just hearing about it because she swapped with another coworker who didn't use their type cover, and the issue seemed resolved. Today she tells me that the issue is back, on the second type cover as well. Originally, I thought this seemed like a hardware issue with the type cover, but after hearing that the issue has cropped up on two different type covers over the span of a few months, I'm starting to wonder if it's not something wrong with the tablet itself, either the connectors where the type cover attaches, or perhaps some sort of software issue. Anyway, that's where my thinking is at right now. Let me list out all the things I've tried so far to resolve this, and hopefully some of you can give me some new leads to try, because I'm stumped. I have: Followed all the steps on this troubleshooting page: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4023473/surface-troubleshoot-your-surface-type-cover-or-keyboard Tried this little trick outlined here: https://thedigitallifestyle.com/w/index.php/2015/10/06/how-to-fix-a-type-cover-not-working-on-a-surface-pro-3/ Tested both the onscreen keyboard and an external USB keyboard, both of which worked fine. Detached and reattached the type cover multiple times. Restarted the SP4 multiple times. I did run across a thread in which someone experienced a very similar issue, but their eventual solution was to simply RMA the type cover. If it comes to that I can do it, but I'd rather just fix this if at all possible. Any help you guys can offer will be greatly appreciated.

Ok, so I am looking at laptops/tablets that are crazy portable with decent power. The surface pro (5) has got my attention. I want to do light 1080p video editing and super light gaming(Minecraft @ native res). The camera really doesn't matter, just skype calling really. Battery life is also important, because I would travel with this Tablet. I would also use this as a daily driver, replacing my current driver, a Late 2016 Razer Blade Stealth, and probably my iPad air 2. I am quite clumsy and have broken 2 iPads and put a huge dent in the bottom left corner of my Blade stealth, so durability is a decent concern. I would get a type cover and Arc Mouse with it. I am looking at the i7, 16GB Ram, 512GB SSD model. I would love to hear your thoughts. =D

I am getting a Surface Pro 4 for school, but I can't decide between the 4gb and 8gb RAM model. Is the extra storage and upgraded ram worth the extra premium you have to pay, keeping in mind that I will be using it predominantly for school word processing and content consumption? I won't be doing any editing, light gaming at most (CS GO, Civ, etc). I can go for the higher price, but only if absolutely necessary. I will also be getting the type cover regardless of which model I buy. Can the 4gb model hold its own in performance, and at least for a couple of years down the road as well? The extra storage is really just an added bonus, because I can get an external hard drive if it really comes down to it. Thanks!

what happened? Our first Surface Pro model was the Core i5-7300U SKU and, as shown by our looped CineBench R15 Multi-Thread test scores below, CPU performance can fall significantly from 334 points during the start of the run to as low as 226 points towards the end. This represents a drop of almost 33 percent from what we expect out of a proper ULV Core i5-7300U. In fact, such behavior is more common on a 4.5 W Intel Core Y or Core M series CPU rather than a 15 W Core U series. Surface Pro 2017 Core i7-7600U processor will throttle just as heavily when under the same CineBench R15 Multi-Thread loop test as shown by our graph below. Scores drop steadily after each subsequent run from 410 points down to 340 points by the 7th or 8th loop. This means that users who purchase the Core i7-7600U SKU will actually have a performance level closer to that of a proper Core i5-7300U CPU instead of the Core i7 that they paid for. Conclusion Microsoft's promise of a 50 percent performance boost over the Surface Pro 4 generation is only partially true. Our tests on both the Surface Pro 2017 Core i5 and Core i7 SKUs reveal that performance is indeed faster, but only for the first few minutes before throttling inevitably kicks in. Microsoft is essentially overcharging for the Core i5 and Core i7 configurations since their respective cooling solutions are clearly unable to maintain the proper base clock rates that we have come to expect from a U-class processor. TLDR- improper cooling on the new Microsoft surface pro, all of them are affected but the passively cooled ones gets affected the most. source -https://www.notebookcheck.net/Microsoft-Surface-Pro-series-facing-heavy-throttling-issues.232538.0.html yes there was enough room for a fan on all the models

Hi, sorry if this is the wrong forum but my surface pro 4 has a display issue that causes the display to look like it has a low resolution but in the settings it says that the resolution is 2736 X 1824,and when I scroll on pages with lots of words lines like those on 't' disappear until I scroll. I have reinstalled windows but the screen still looks weird. Can anyone recommend what I can do? The pictures attached are from about 10cm away from the screen.

Hi all, I'm starting at sixth form (college) in September and need a laptop / 2 in 1 for general use and the more intensive tasks produced by my Computer Science course. I initially headed towards a Surface Pro 6, as I like the portability, power and ability to use a pen (for note-taking and drawing flowcharts). However now that I've seen devices like the Matebook X Pro around, with an incredible display, better power and easier on-lap usage (for the same price). Which would you prefer to have? Are there any alternatives to the Surface Pro that have such a good screen like the Matebook? If you have any other recommendations: - Ideally a small SSD as almost all resources and work are cloud-based - Ideally under 15" - Must use Windows as school relies heavily on Microsoft services - Budget is around £1,000 / US$1,225 / CA$1,630 / AU$1,800 / €1,100 Most thanks, S h u r i k e n

My Surface Pro 6 gets stuck at 0.40GHz while it's plugged to the charger, even when it's idle. It's hard to pinpoint the problem because it doesn't happen every time. The issue doesn't arise when I'm on battery, and it only happens when I plug in the charger but goes away as soon as I unplug. Does anyone know what could be causing this? I'm thinking about getting a replacement, but Microsoft stores are pretty far, and I hate dealing with returns. I'm starting to regret my purchase. I'm running Windows 10 1903, and I didn't have this issue before. It happened a couple of times in the past two months or so, but I always assumed it was software related. Now I feel it may be a hardware issue. I haven't tried doing a fresh install, but I'll give that a go in the morning. PS: Sorry, wrong section. I just saw the troubleshooting thread. I have a Microsoft Surface Pro from 2017 and I am mostly happy with it. However, now that I have started using USB-C I am realizing how much I am missing out not being able to charge it with USB-C. So, I had this idea to get a Surface Pro charging cable or rather connector and a USB-C cable and put those together so that I have USB-C on one and the proprietary Surface Charging Connector on the other end. My question: does something like this already exist and where do I find a Surface Pro Charging Connector/Third Party cable/connector as I am not willing to pay the price for the original cable? BTW I am open to any better suggestions. It literally just was an idea.

Should I Get An Ultrabook Or Gaming Laptop
Newbie007 posted a topic in Laptops and Pre-Built Systems
Hi Guys I'm a proud owner of Surface Pro 6 (i5 8th Gen/128GB with type cover and pen) which I got as a replacement of SP4 - Thanks to flickergate ;) . I mostly use it for watching videos and for reading purpose (knowing I can go much further than this).Being a software engineer, I use my old HP Pavilion 15 (i5 6th Gen dual core/8 GB/2 GB Geforce 940MX) for programming purpose and rarely casual gaming (got a gaming pc for this). Since this laptop is now over 3 years old and given the fact that SP6 is much more powerful than this, I'm considering a new laptop.Right now I have only HP in my mind (family's 6th HP laptop) and I'm little confused between a mediocre gaming laptop or HP Envy 13(AQ1019TX).Can you guys please let me know your thoughts - Should I get Envy 13 (or something similar) even after owning SP6 or go for a little powerful but bulky machine.I won't be doing any serious gaming on the laptop and I want it to be a bit future proof (should at least last for 3-4 years or so) - Will be mainly using it for a couple of IDEs. At the price of Envy 13, I can easily get a mid-high spec gaming laptop with Core i7 and GTX1650.Any suggestion will be helpful! Thanks in advance and a happy new year!!- 3 replies

Hello! I am looking to buy a laptop/tablet for my mother for Christmas. She does not currently have one, and uses her phone for everything, complaining about the small screen. (A hint for my father and I for christmas gift ideas) I have found a surface pro 4 still in box, with the touch cover keyboard, 4 gigs of ram, and 128gb of storage for 500. I was curious as to how this would compare with a Surface Go, being in a similar price range, would it be better to splurge for the $400 surface go with a keyboard, or even the 550 surface go over this? Or go with the older hardware? Remember, she only really uses it for emails, watching netflix, hulu, etc. and reading while she travels or at home.
