FYI: firmware 1.0.34.0 bricking Microsoft Surface Go 1's
Blue Bill posted a topic in Troubleshooting
Seems Microsoft has been pushing out a Windows firmware update for the Surface Go series of tablets. This firmware version 1.0.34.0 was released end of May 2022 and is causing many Surface Go 4G 64GB eMMC machines to no longer boot from the internal eMMC with a "No bootable device" error. According to this thread, Microsoft appears to know there is an issue but has done nothing to fix it aside from sending in your device for a replacement for $250. Surface Go uefi version is 1.0.34 and No Bootable Device error - Microsoft Community A Reddit thread (9) URGENT NOTICE: Surface Go 1 UEFI firmware 1.0.34.0 update is bugged. "No Bootable Device" : Surface (reddit.com) And a single article Surface Go, pay attention to firmware 1.0.34: more than someone is in serious trouble - Real Mi Central Not sure what it takes to get the wheels greased at Microsoft, but they are "bricking" lots of Surface Go 1 baselines. If you have a baseline Surface Go 1 skip this firmware if it's not too late. Bill from Canada-

Does anyone know whether it's possible to use hotspotting on the Surface Go tablet? Ideally I need a Windows tablet device that has cellular data compatibility, but am also aware of budget (the 4G compatible versions of the Surface tablets start at around $12-1500 over here in New Zealand), and so was wondering if hotspotting is possible on the 'low end' Go devices, for on the move data use? Thanks for any advice :)

Just wondered if anyone had any hands on experience with the MS Surface Go and can confirm that you can immediately switch out of Windows S mode and into full fat Windows (enabling installation of x86 software)? Thanks for any info!

I am looking to buy a small ultra portable secondary machine for media consumption/note taking/creating docs/ppts.. For that I've looked at Surface Go 4GB Ram/64GB emmc storage variant and I just wanted to make sure that it's the right choice, I've never used 4gb ram on Win 10 before so don't know it's actual performance and keep in mind that I am coming from a 7200rpm HDD so I don't think emmc storage will be a problem for me but let me know your thoughts.. I will have to buy surface type cover and surface pen so my cost goes up significantly and thats the reason I'm not keen on 8GB version but if this 4gb version is not going to be very usable then pls let me know.. Also any good alternatives for my use case are welcome. Cost for 4gb variant for me is approx $500 and 8gb variant is $714 as I am from India. Also let me know if you think Surface Go 2 will be coming out soon if you guys have any info on that..

Hi everyone, I recently bought a Surface Go on amazon. I tried installing apps but it's stuck in S mode. When I try to activate its giving me an error. I don't get why it's telling me that I Can't connect to the organisation's activation server since the edition is Windows 10 Home. I can understand if the product isn't activated yet. My question is if I buy a genuine windows key will I be able to activate this? I don't want to shell out 100+ dollars and for it to still say that I cant connect to the organisation servers. Thanks in advance!

I can't find any information on the headphone output of the Microsoft Surface Go nor the DAC-chip they use. Does anyone here by chance own a Surface Go and could test if it works with high impedance headphones like the HD 660s (150 Ohm and 104 db/V sensitivity) or even better knows the exact VRMS output. It doesnt need to be excellent sound quality, just loud enough for casual listening. Of course I could ask Microsofts support for information, but actually y'all know that won't help, because even if you get through to a real person (which is rare) they will only link some "helpful" articles from their help site.

Hello! I am looking to buy a laptop/tablet for my mother for Christmas. She does not currently have one, and uses her phone for everything, complaining about the small screen. (A hint for my father and I for christmas gift ideas) I have found a surface pro 4 still in box, with the touch cover keyboard, 4 gigs of ram, and 128gb of storage for 500. I was curious as to how this would compare with a Surface Go, being in a similar price range, would it be better to splurge for the $400 surface go with a keyboard, or even the 550 surface go over this? Or go with the older hardware? Remember, she only really uses it for emails, watching netflix, hulu, etc. and reading while she travels or at home.

Hey guys, After a long time carrying round my chunky t430s thinkpad its finally died on me and i need to get myself a new laptop. I mostly use it just for coding and general web browsing whilst at college or on the move. I've looked at Chromebooks but i don't feel they will cut it at the coding part and i don't need a another 15" chunky laptop to carry around so i've been looking at the surface range. One of my options is the surface Go with a pentium processor (:/ my thoughts exactly) and 8gb (which surprised me very much). It also includes it on graphics chip which look reasonably good and a 128gb SSD which is plenty of space as all of my documents are just coding based. The 2nd option would be a surface pro which presents another dilemma, the surface pro with an M3 or with an i5. The M3 only has 4gb of ram and the I5 has eight. the challenge is really trying to work out will the M3 be enough to handle coding or should i just fork out the extra £100 and get the i5 to (future proof ect.) Any help and suggestions is appreciated and I thank you in advance. Ben

Hi, I'm looking for a tablet recommendations to replace my ageing iPad 2. The two devices I was looking at specifically are the Microsoft Surface Go (8GB model) and the Samsung Galaxy Tab S4. I'm not a student any more, so I don't need anything specific. I mostly will use it to watch videos, specifically YouTube, send some emails and web browsing. Also I would use it for some light gaming, but I do have other more capable gaming device already, so I'm not looking for a primary gaming device. I'm also sort of leaning away from getting another iPad. I have had one for a while and I kind of bored with it. I was sort of looking for something different, unless they have changed substantially in the last few years. Anyway, thanks for reading and I look forward to seeing your suggestions. I'm also open to other devices that I haven't considered as well.

The Surface Go made to be a cheap alternative to the surface lineup for student and those on a tight budget, but does it give you what you expect for $399.99. Well kinda, I have the $399.99 model with 64GB of storage and 4GB of ram and its been great, at least the second one has, but I’ll get to that later. For now let’s take a minute to talk about the tablet. I call it a tablet because it’s sold as one with no keyboard, mouse or pen. As a tablet it’s crap, the on screen keyboard needs work and fails to be comfortable to use. windows 10 is no were near 8.1 in terms of tablet usability. Now once you pay another $99.99 for the keyboard, which is now $129.99, you're already paying a hefty price for what could be a better laptop. That being said, I’m going to keep mine. I’m sorry Microsoft, I’m not giving this loner back. I fell in love with it from day one for its small size and great battery. It easily gets me through the day of lectures and then some when I get back to my dorm for some Netflix, but that doesn’t mean it's great for productivity. I've yet to have page file errors in Edge but I do see ram hit max usage after 10 tabs, so as long as you aren't like Linus with his 50 tab addiction you should be fine. But I think it gets away with this as it ships with windows 10S so you can’t install anything that isn't on the Microsoft store app. So if you love chrome like me, it will take a while to learn to love edge, but it's worth it for me as all my work is done with google docs anyway. Now about this being my second version, I’d like to say that I had a hard time my first week with this device. My first model suffered from the sleep of death which was the first case Microsoft saw on this model. I told them about it, and they were quick to replace it but I would have to send it in and wait on a new model in the mail. So I drove 2 hours to the nearest store and had it swapped there. It was a setback, but I think they understood because they gave me free goodies and a voter card to the store. Good job on rectifying the problem and making it up to the customer, although a gas card would have been nice because the drive made me use a quarter of a tank of gas and I missed 2 classes that day. Although it was well worth it. The small 64GB SDD hasn't been a problem as the first day I had it I went and got a nice 128GB SD card that slipped nicely into the back of the device under the kickstand. Speaking of which the kickstand is really nice and has the perfect amount of restrictiveness and angles of tilt. Microsoft did a great job on the looks and feel of the device right down to the charger which is a magnetic reverse able connecter, nice touch to bad Apple dropped that for some reason. All in all I would recommend this device highly to any student or light user with almost no hesitation as it’s the nicest “laptop” at its, all be it a little higher than I’d like, price tag.

Hello, I have been using my Galaxy Tab 10.1 2014 Edition (running Android 5.1.1) for school since I got it but its age is starting to really have an effect on my notes(I have a laptop for engineering software and heavier load stuff). I use OneNote, and to say the least... Android << iPadOS < Windows I don't want to spend a lot of money and realistically expect to spend around 450. I find myself trying to decide between the Windows experience on the Surface Go (1 or 2)(or maybe an older model refurb?) and the power of the new iPad 10.2". I'm a Windows user so the familiarity of the Surface is a plus, as well as the IO and better OneNote experience. However, I worry about the power of these cheaper models over time and compared to the iPad, they seem very under powered. What are your experiences/opinions? Is there something I haven't thought of? Is OneNote more complete on more recent versions of Android?

Okay so I am debating buying a device for notes for college. I am trying to decide between a new Microsoft surface go or a used surface pro 2017. I already have a gaming rig for most things and this is just a second device. Any thought

This will be long, while I'd love a shoutout in the video to know the team saw this, I'd settle with seeing my points in the review. I got this... Yesterday. And my feelings are... mixed. Let's start with pros, this is light, thin, and may I say, sexy, as sexy as a macbook. The color accuracy competes with laptops 1000-2000 dollars more. And the webcam is much the same. The type keyboard being able to separate and simply walk away is a feature to love. Now to the caveats. I did say separate, while you can flip the keyboard around, didn't many of us buy this to avoid the awkwardness of pressing keys on a 2 in 1? And the battery is not 9 hours, during simple redditing and other light use, it lasts 4 hours from 100% to 10%. And while this is both a con and a pro, it ships in Windows S mode. While some people may like S, st of us will switch it, making it so that you need to wait approximately 30 minutes from turning it on for the first time to actually using it. But S mode is how it is supposed to be used, because even in browsing, the Pentium gold lags at times. I use Brave browser because while using my go, because while in Chrome the laptop lags even more. Youtube videos will stutter every 20-60 seconds. The model I got was the 4gb 128gb model from Costco, this setup is only available from Costco, It is $550 and includes the black type cover. And I bought this version, because for $500 including the type cover, the base model has an emmc 64gb storage drive and 4gb of ram, that makes that model just not sufficient, and for $650 including the type cover, the higher model becomes obviously overpriced. Because for the same price your options of traditional laptops make the performance of this one seem like a "the runt of the group" situation. I actually highly agree with Dave from Dave2D on this one, when it comes to competition, you realize that this is slow, and there are many other offerings. Or maybe you came to this device for form factor, the form is nice, small and compact. And when went to the Microsoft prior to purchase, the keyboard felt cramped, but in very little time the keyboard felt quite comfortable. The surface connector is small and often comes out of the laptop due to it's length, and the USBC has passthrough charging, which makes you ask, why doesn't this have a single thunderbolt three connector? And maybe you think you can just skip the type cover, you can't, without it, this is a paperweight, windows just isn't designed for touch, although with just the pen I could see this being used as a drawing tablet and for basic fun use, athough if you are going to type anything like this review, the type keyboard is a must, especially considering that there is no USB C dongle included to use an external keyboard.
