  1. Budget (including currency): Currently ~5k GBP but can be much higher if it will have real benefit Country: UK Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Gaming, everything from Minecraft to recent AAA and everything in between. Also some programming & AI work. Probably going to be transferring files between it and my MacBook Pro a fair bit so Thunderbolt is nice for the fast transfer speeds. Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): Planning out a bit of an ultimate PC build, only peripherals I currently have are a Logitech G Pro Wireless & a Thunderbolt 3 Dock from Anker, both of which I use for my laptop atm. Want to build something with top of the line performance, that'll have a good amount of longevity built from scratch. It's also been a while since I've built a PC, so something not too difficult/complicated to build would be nice. No real preference for case/aesthetics, it would be nice if it looks good but that's secondary to performance to me. Below I've put what I've come up with on PCpartpicker, but I'd love suggestions/feedback, as I'm really just guessing/reading some reviews/hoping it's all compatible & good. Likely going to buy within a month unless there's something coming out for really soon which would make waiting worth it either price or performance wise. Thanks! 3. Summary The US snatches crown with new world’s fastest supercomputer. The US-based AMD-powered Frontier supercomputer has broken the record for world’s most powerful system, new performance data shows. According to the latest edition of the Top500 list, which ranks supercomputers by their HPL benchmark scores, Frontier achieves more than double the performance of the previous record-holder, Fugaku. With a score of 1.102 exaflops, Frontier also becomes the first machine to officially surpass the exascale barrier. Quotes My thoughts Just to get this out of the way: But Can It Run Crysis? Now that that's done, reading through the sources it appears that it might not actually be the first exascale system. As the Top500 is based on submissions, and China might have multiple exascale-class systems, but have chosen not to submit them amidst geopolitical tensions with the US. Some other suggestions as to why China has chosen not to submit them, is that they don't hit their claimed performance numbers. As far as the Top 10 goes; Intel now only has one system, holding position number 9. The rest in the Top 10 being: AMD, Fujitsu, IBM/Nvidia, NRCPC, AMD/Nvidia, and Intel/Matrix 2000. With that all said, I'm sure AMD is proud to have 5 systems in the Top 10 now. 4. Fugaku Supercomputers (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fugaku_(supercomputer)) has achieved 537 petaflops (200 petaflops by the previous Rank #1) of performance. This hasn't created much discussion anywhere since it was announced, but will be soon released in the top 500 list (June 1st week) here is the tweet: https://twitter.com/ProfMatsuoka/status/1261194036276154368?s=20 This, if and when it trips down to the data centre has the ability to integrate the mobile and the server architecture, which the x86 hasn't been able to achieve till now. scalable mobile games anyone? wanted to see what opinions the forum has on it.
  5. Yesterday watched the whole Terminator series and according to the series an A.I. named Skynet takeover the world by upgrading and making changes in itself up to a point where we humans were not able to stop it. I did a little bit of research and found this - ( https://futureoflife.org/ai-open-letter/ ) A letter signed thousand's of people including Stephen Hawking, Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Steve Wozniak and many more. In this letter they warn us about how Artificial Intelligence can ruin our future. so, My question is what do you think about the future of A.I. and us?
  6. Buy AMD Vega Amazon: http://geni.us/no2V8 Newegg: http://geni.us/YnnF AMD's new 80 VEGA supercomputer is nice, but it isn't complete until it has the "Linus touch." Let's just hope we don't drop it...
  7. I am completely ignorant about computers, but the question came to me today, is there a way to use an average computer but play very demanding games. I don't know anything about virtual pc's or supercomputers, and I just wanted to know, could I use an average to ok computer and like log into a super computer that is local or in the same building. I would build the device and then access it from an average computer and I guess what would happen is that it would just like register the key mouse movements and inputs, using the sweet performance of the supercomputer but play that demanding game on my average pc.
  8. I came across this article today and wondered what others thought of it https://www-theverge-com.cdn.ampproject.org/v/s/www.theverge.com/platform/amp/2019/5/7/18535078/worlds-fastest-exascale-supercomputer-frontier-amd-cray-doe-oak-ridge-national-laboratory?amp_js_v=a2&amp_gsa=1#referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com&amp_tf=From%20%251%24s&ampshare=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.theverge.com%2F2019%2F5%2F7%2F18535078%2Fworlds-fastest-exascale-supercomputer-frontier-amd-cray-doe-oak-ridge-national-laboratory
  9. .So I was thinking, what are some ways that we could rethink cooling for supercomputers, I propose 3 ideas that came to my mind. It was actually my first thought that was most crazy and the third is more realistic but here they are. Idea #1 - Subaquatic Deep Sea, Water Cooled Super Computer Ok image a large submarine deep down in the that intakes large supplies of very cold water and easily expels it away upwards into currents. Small Ps. i even thought it could be nuclear powered and and just be super powerfully, this also applies to the next idea Idea #2 - Use the Cold Cold Vacuum of Space This one explains it self. After I first thought edit it I figured this just already be used on the ISS but I found that the first supercomputer in space was out up let year and only did on teraflop. But what if we could shield the CPUs and GPUs from radiation but open then up to the frigid vacuum of space. Think of the ease of cooling. The other option in space is using them to heat the living quarters or any other areas requiring heat but that isn't as cool. Idea #3 - Great Canadian North. Linus are you paying attention Why hasn't either someone privately out even our government putting any thought into using the natural for of caffeine winter to cool their data centers. just build outdoor weather proof data centers and supercomputers. Does anyone know if any of this are being used or maybe have failed for what ever reason? Can you think of other kind of crazy ways to cool a computer. Maybe this kind of thing is what they need to do to further quantum computing. Big ps. I don't know how long is been since I was on the site on mobile. It really is beautiful. One of the best looking mobile forums I've used and the best to write in for sure
  10. Hey @LinusTech, why don't you start a project on building a super computer. Fan From India......
  11. Source: http://www.tomshardware.com/news/nvidia-ai-tesla-v100-supercomputer,35917.html Nvidia's new software tools for GPU cloud: There is also a steam cloud based software that can be downloaded which allows you to play games virtually on the cloud (I think this refers to you playing games on a seperate server which is powered with its own graphics cards). Its also going to be a paid software from what I know. Japan adopts 4,352 Tesla volta GPUs for its own supercomputer: Fact: This is also the first Exaflop AI supercomputer in the world boasting (0.55 Exaflops).
  12. Hi! I am new to the forum and a general noob when it comes to the more complex side of tech. I have a few identical older workstations (I7-3770 based) and a couple 10gb network cards lying around so I was doing a bit of reading to see if there is anything interesting I could do with them. I stumbled across something called Mosix, and then specifically openMosix. My question is: would it be possible, however impractical, to use something like openMosix to link the workstations I have together into a sort of "DIY supercomputer". I realize that it wouldn't be very practical from a performance/cost perspective but I think it would be a great learning opportunity for me if it is possible. P.S. I searched the forum trying to find a thread like this but I couldn't. I apologize if this has already been addressed somewhere else. Cheers! openMosix: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenMosix#ClusterKnoppix
  13. Howdy ya'll, What type of hardware runs structural analysis software the fastest? I'm a noob so please explain like I'm 5. I'm specifically curious about running Midas Civil. https://en.midasuser.com/product/civil_overview.asp Some of my complex bridge rating models take as long as 15 hours to run and produce over 100 GB of data. The record in my office is over 400 GBs for one bridge!! The computers at work are powerful-ish with i7 processors and 32 GB of memory and SSDs. If I had say $3,000 to spend could I build a machine that could cut the processing time in half? What would it look like? Would it be similar to a mining machine or 4k video editing machine? Do I need a CPU with as many cores as possible for this type of computing? This is all that Midas provided as far as system requirements. CPU Pentium IV or better performing PC processor (Pentium IV 3GHz or greater recommended) Memory (RAM) 1GB (2GB or greater recommended) HDD Space 5 GB (30GB or greater recommended) Video Memory 128 MB or greater Video Card GeForce NVIDIA type video card recommended (On-board video card is not recommended.) System RecommendationsIn general, better system will make the analysis and software performance smoother and faster. (higher memory Ram, local drive storage, etc.) There are system recommendations : System Recommendations Operating System - 64 bit operating system - If the system can handle GPU, that is even better. HDD Type SSD (Solid State Drive) Graphic Card NVIDIA G-Force Line Graphic card
  14. Hello everyone. Thank you in advance for any help. We have purchased a new software for CFD Modeling, the software will allow us to use up to a 16 Core CPU. We are currently the software on our laptop with 4 core i7 4650u "i think that is the cpu" and simulations or "runs" are taking up to 5 days for us to process. So we would like to build a computer with 16 cores and they recommend 4gigs ram per core. The software flow_3d runs on the CPU And the post processor Flow_Sight runs on GPU. I have been investigating the Intel Xeon E5-2670 I can get 2 of these for $150 I would like to get the runs down to half a day if possible so we can give our clients quick results. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is a branch of fluid mechanics that uses numerical analysis and algorithms to solve and analyze problems that involve fluid flows. Computers are used to perform the calculations required to simulate the interaction of liquids and gases with surfaces defined by boundary conditions. 17. Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg aren't the only Silicon Valley heavyweights fighting Ebola: IBM is using its tech know-how to help curb the spread of the disease in West Africa. The company is teaming up with Sierra Leone's Open Government Initiative, Cambridge University's Africa's Voices project, telco firm Airtel, and Kenya's Echo Mobile for various efforts aimed at fighting the deadly disease. Internet connections are not easy to come by in many areas of the affected region, hampering citizen reporting efforts. So IBM and the Open Government Initiative developed a system that lets people report Ebola-related issues and concerns via SMS or voice calls. "For us to tackle Ebola, it is crucial to maintain an open dialogue between the government and the people of Sierra Leone," Khadija Sesay, director the Open Government Initiative, said in a statement. "IBM has enhanced our work on citizen engagement through the use of innovative technology, and opened up an effective communication channel with the general public so that we can learn from their input and create actionable policies in the fight against Ebola." IBM can then take that info and - via the power of supercomputing and cloud-based analytics - identify emerging issues before they get out of hand. "As the SMS and voice data are location specific, IBM is able to create opinion-based heat-maps which correlate public sentiment to location information," IBM said. More importantly, the technology has already highlighted regions with growing numbers of suspected Ebola cases, so officials know where supplies and other assistance is most needed. "We are uniquely positioned to use innovation to help tackle some of the continent's biggest challenges," IBM Research chief scientist Dr. Uyi Stewart said of the company's first research lab in Africa. "We saw the need to quickly develop a system to enable communities directly affected by Ebola to provide valuable insight about how to fight it. Using mobile technology, we have given them a voice and a channel to communicate their experiences directly to the government." Nigeria, meanwhile, has recently been declared free of the disease, and it now working with IBM to help support the country's preparedness for future outbreaks. With a technology donation from IBM, the Lagos State Government has opened an Ebola Operations Center, which coordinates disease containment efforts on behalf of the Nigerian government and other organizations. But this disease is not contained in Africa, and neither are the people fighting it. IBM has volunteers around the globe identifying, cataloguing, and classifying all open data sources related to the outbreak. The goal, according to IBM, is to create a cloud-based Ebola Open Data Repository, which provides governments, aid agencies, and researchers with free and open access to data related to the sickness. "Data can be a powerful resource for managing and mitigating epidemics," Jeanne Holm, evangelist for Data.gov, said in a statement. "Governments and other organizations have valuable open data that could help in relief efforts—about roads, airports, schools, medical facilities, and populations. "Such information can help to drive data-driven decisions during times of uncertainty," Holm continued. "IBM is playing a key role in this initiative by helping to identify and gather more open data sources that might inform decisions around Ebola." Learn more about IBM's Africa research centre in the video below. Meanwhile, another Microsoft co-founder has pledged a nice chunk of change to help fight the outbreak. Paul Allen has set up tackleebola.com and committed to donate $100 million to the effort. This computer can be customized to hold 768 Gbs of RAM and two Intel Xeon processors to a total of 16 cores, as well as holding 3 nVidia Quadro-6000 professional graphics cards. The computer of course is not meant for gaming but instead professional music and video rendering, but I'm sure you could swap out the graphics cards to your liking, assuming you want to spend $40'000 on a workstation. Here's the link main website: http://www.musiccomputing.com/coremc Here's the customization page: http://www.musiccomputing.com/store/product.php?productid=17693&cat=266&page=1 I'd love to see Linus's opinion on this computer, not that I'm considering a purchase or anything :)

  20. Hello all, I not super new to the forum, but I just now made an account. I thought that some might be interested in this topic. I also wanted to see if anyone could give me more info on it other than what the article states. Basically what I've picked up and understood from the article is that Intel wants people to go to Facebook and sign up for this app, so that when your computer has idle processing power when you're not doing very much, it donates it into this vast intertwining bundle of other computers around the world who are doing the same thing, which in turn creates a "virtual supercomputer" so that scientists can use that supercomputers power as a resource to help find cures for diseases like Cancer, AIDS, and Alzheimer's. It's called "Progress Thru Processors" Apparently it's been going on for a while, but it's suddenly starting to pick up popularity again. That's about all I've got. Sure I've built my computer and know a solid amount about computers, I still don't totally understand the whole concept of this and/or how it's possible. Any thoughts, comments, or ideas are welcome. Thanks! For those who want to read for themselves, here is the link: http://iq.intel.com/iq/39550039/donate-your-computer-s-unused-processing-power-for-the-greater-good -Wubnaught
  21. A system built with thousands of Intel processors and co-processors was just named the most powerful supercomputer in the world in the 41st edition of the Top500 list of supercomputers. The system, known as "Milky Way 2," includes 48,000 Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors and 32,000 Intel Xeon processors and operates at a peak performance of 54.9 PFlops (54.9 quadrillion floating point operations per second) -- more than twice the performance of the top rated system from the last edition of the Top500 list in November 2012. This is the first exclusively Intel-based system to take the top spot on the list since 1997. Intel also announced the expansion of the Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors portfolio and revealed details of the second generation of Intel Xeon Phi products code named "Knights Landing." The new products and technologies will continue to radically increase the energy efficiency and performance of supercomputers worldwide. The worldwide high performance computing (HPC) server segment is expected to grow its annual revenue by 36 percent1 from $11 billion to $15 billion over the next four years. The dramatic increase and growth of supercomputers continues to be driven by the need to quickly compute, simulate and make more informed decisions across a range of industries. Supercomputers are used to increase the accuracy of weather predictions, help to explore more efficient energy resources, develop cures for diseases, sequence the human genome and analyze big data. "Intel is helping to blaze a path toward new innovation, discovery and competitiveness with its supercomputing vision and products," said Raj Hazra, vice president and general manager of Technical Computing Group. "There is an insatiable demand for more computing power while also achieving new levels of power efficiency. With the current and future generations of Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors, Intel Xeon processors, Intel TrueScale fabrics and software, Intel is uniquely equipped to deliver a comprehensive solution for our customers without compromise." Since the introduction of Intel Xeon Phi six months ago, Intel Xeon processors and Intel Xeon Phi co-processors have become a powerful combination now powering many of the world's fastest supercomputers. Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors based on the Intel Many Integrated Core (Intel MIC) architecture address the need for higher performing yet more energy efficient and user-friendly technology. "Milky Way 2" - the World's Fastest Supercomputer Built for the National Supercomputing Center in Guangzhou China, the "Milky Way 2" system is powered by 32,000 of the upcoming 12-core Intel Xeon processors E5-2600 v2 based on Ivy Bridge architecture, and 48,000 Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors, with a total system power of 17.8 MW. Not only is it the fastest, but also one of the most power-efficient systems on the Top500 list. The system uses "neo-heterogeneous architecture," whereby the hardware architecture has multiple classes of compute capabilities that are accessed by a common programming model, streamlining development and optimization processes - an advantage not possible when using a combination of CPUs and GPU accelerators. The system's leading performance and energy efficiency were achieved by using the upcoming Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 v2 product family based on Intel's leading 22nm manufacturing process. In addition to powering the "Milky Way 2", these processors also power two other systems on the Top500 list from Bull*, the 54th ranked system with 557 TFlops and the 329th with 139 TFlops, as part of an "early ship" program Intel uses to equip supercomputer customers. The products will be generally available next quarter, and will feature up to 12 cores and up to 2.7GHz clock speeds, delivering 259 GFlops per socket, a 56 percent increase over the previous generation. More than 80 percent (403 systems) of the supercomputers on the 41st edition of the Top500 list are powered by Intel processors. Of those systems making their first appearance on the list, Intel-powered installations account for 98 percent. The June edition of the list had recorded 11 systems based on the Intel Xeon Phi coprocessor, including the Petaflops class systems like "Milky Way 2" at 54.9 PFlops and "Stampede" at 8.5 PFlops of peak performance. The semi-annual TOP500 list of supercomputers is the work of Hans Meuer of the University of Mannheim, Erich Strohmaier and Horst Simon of the U.S. Department of Energy's National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center, and Jack Dongarra of the University of Tennessee. The complete report is available at this page. New Intel Xeon Phi Coprocessor 3000 and 7000 Product Families Intel also announced the expansion of its current generation Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors with the addition of five new products that feature various performance options, memory capacity, power efficiency and form factors that are available today. The Intel Xeon Phi coprocessor 7100 family is designed and optimized to provide the best performance and offer the highest level of features, including 61 cores clocked at 1.23GHz, 16 GB of memory capacity support (double the amount previously available in accelerators or coprocessors) and over 1.2 TFlops of double precision performance. The Intel Xeon Phi coprocessor 3100 family is designed for high performance per dollar value. The family features 57 cores clocked at 1.1 GHz and 1TFlops of double precision performance. Lastly, Intel added another product to the Intel Xeon Phi coprocessor 5100 family announced last year. Named the Intel Xeon Phi coprocessor 5120D, it is optimized for high-density environments with the ability to allow sockets to attach directly to a mini-board for use in blade form factors. "Knights Landing" - A Choice of Coprocessor or CPU Intel revealed details of its second generation Intel Xeon Phi products aimed to further increase their supercomputing capabilities. Codenamed "Knights Landing," the next generation of Intel MIC Architecture-based products will be available as a coprocessor or a host processor (CPU) and manufactured using Intel's 14nm process technology featuring second generation 3-D tri-gate transistors. As a PCIe card-based coprocessor, "Knights Landing" will handle offload workloads from the system's Intel Xeon processors and provide an upgrade path for users of current generation of coprocessors, much like it does today. However, as a host processor directly installed in the motherboard socket, it will function as a CPU and enable the next leap in compute density and performance per watt, handling all the duties of the primary processor and the specialized coprocessor at the same time. When used as a CPU, "Knights Landing" will also remove programming complexities of data transfer over PCIe, common in accelerators today. To further boost the performance for HPC workloads, Intel will significantly increase the memory bandwidth for all "Knights Landing" products by introducing integrated on-package memory. This will allow customers to take full advantage of available compute capacity without encountering memory bandwidth bottlenecks experienced today.
  22. Ok, so I'm not enormously knowledgeable about how server/supercomputer cooling works in comparison to standard workstation cooling, but wouldn't water cooling be a more effective method of cooling in the long run? I have no doubt that it'd be hella expensive to set it up in the first place, and possible more expensive to maintain, but wouldn't water cooling mean servers could be more reliable in terms of hardware life and overheating? Supercomputers, on the other hand, seem like they should be watercooled anyway so that you can beef up the hardware in the computer itself and essentially 'do better' at whatever it's supposed to do. Someone teach me things about this!
