So here we are again... Six or so months ago, I finished my first small form factor build; a gaming rig inside an Dreamcast shell. It was an...interesting learning curve, with non-standard components I wasn't used to using, and a LOT of dremel work. But obviously now I have to go bigger and better, and having done SFF, I've got to try something else I've not done....enter water cooling THE PLAN Of course, the case. We've got the classic...the one...the only...the FAT PS2. Roughly 3.8L in size. The last system was Intel based, so for that reason alone I'm going to make this an AMD build. The graphics card will hopefully be more powerful, I'm looking at a 1080, or a 2060S. Ram, 16Gb. That's an easy one. Storange size unknown, but it'll be M.2. Watercooling, obviously...I'd like the CPU and GPU both to be in the loop if at all feasible. As with the Dreamcast, from the front I want it to be as sleeper as possible. only the keen eye should be able to tell what's inside...

I am looking at building myself like Pfsense box using the new STX mobos, Asus has one with dual gigabit LANs. I have yet to figure out what CPU that I want/need. I was thinking of using the Pentium G4560. When I compare it to the Pfsense/Netgear hardware, the G4560 seems to be a good choice as the Netgear uses Atom CPUs, even on their medium business grade products. As for add-ins, I want to use with Pfsense, I want to use my old SSD for caching and a VPN to protect my whole network, possibly some kind of network intrusion detection like Snort or Suricata. Will the G4560 be enough, or do I want to bump up to an I3 or even an I5?

It has finally begun, the project involving a case that's only 2.3L in volume, whilst able to fit dual slot cards up to a length of 170mm. And after a year of planning... I've only managed to cut out the panels for the case itself (Dimensions are 17*14.7*9.5, Width*Depth*Height). Specs: CPU: i5-6600k Cooler: Silverstone AR04 (it's an adorable little heatsink) Motherboard: ASRock H110M-STX (chosen due to the PCIe x4 3.0 M.2 slot) RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws DDR4-2800 1x8GB (cheaper than any 2133 kits so why not?) Storage: Plextor M6s 128GB SSD + a Seagate Barracuda 2TB HDD that I found in a box (that'll be mounted somewhere outside the case) Graphics card: I don't know probably a Sapphire Pulse ITX RX 570 or (if applicable) an RX Vega Nano card PSU(s): A Delta 120W brick for the motherboard, and probably a HDPLEX 80W AC-DC unit combined with a 160W DC-DC with some circuitry to make it turn on at the same time as the motherboard's brick Other: A generic M.2 to PCIe x4 adapter, and a generic (though probably going to be switched to 3M) x4 to x16 powered riser. Warning: Really shitty hardware photos. Current progress: Calculation for internal volume is 17*9.5*(14.7-3) + (9.5 - 2*3)*17*3 + (pi*(3^2)/2)*17 = 2308.3818383 (2.3L) Some people wanted to see this (I think): @Daring @Bananasplit_00

I'm soon going to get a desktop (for college life and etc.), and here are the options I've found : 1) Just build a common PC : ex) i3-7350K + RX 460 + 8GB + ... 2) Get an ASRock DeskMini 110(which is a petit mini-STX based barebone computer) and put i3 or i5 or maybe i7 in it (eGPU unavailable) 3) Get a NUC6i7KYK(a.k.a. Skull Canyon), which is based on mobile quad-core i7 processor 4) Buy a laptop(local rebranded model of Clevo N650DU) which has non-overclockable desktop processor(such as i3-6100, i5-6600, i7-6700) in it : This one offers an option for eGPU(GTX 950M 4GB) or just iGPU(HD 530). I won't run hardcore mainstream games such as Overwatch and Crisis, and all I want to do is enjoying high quality videos(4K) and doing some productivity-related tasks. Sooo... which one will be the most adequate choice?

Hello guys, I need some help to make a decision! I want to buy an internal sound card for my rig, the problem is that I can't decide between those three: 1) Asus Xonar Phoebus | Link to Amazon 2) Asus Xonar Essence STX | Link to NewEgg 3) Creative Sound Blaster ZxR | Link to NewEgg My second Question is: If I choose the Creative Sound Blaster ZxR which is 5.1, my headphones are 7.1! Would my headphones still be 7.1? Sorry for my bad english, thanks in advance!

After upgrading to my Ryzen build and leaving my PCI based ASUS Xonar Essense ST in my other build, I am not going to lie, I really miss the controls and sound it provided me. While the Supreme FX on the board I have is decent, I can notice the overall drop in audio quality in comparison. I am tempted to get the STX II, drop it into one of my free PCI-E 16X slots (or migrate my Elgato HD60Pro into one of them) and call it a day. Should I even care about the 8X PCI-E bandwidth to my graphics card slot? Should I look at the Schitt stack instead? I run AKG 7XXs currently, and may even treat myself to a different pair depending on what I want to listen to. However, gaming wise, the Supreme FX is pretty solid with these headphones for sure. What do you guys think? Thanks!

Asrock have shown off (the motherboard for) their deskmini Z270 motherboard and barebones system, and oh my god it's small. At under 3 litres and featuring an MXM slot, it's going to be the most power-dense barebones system that's avalible on the market. For those who don't know, STX is Intel's new SFF board standard, measuring ~5x5 inches. Asrock extended that standard to inclue an MXM slot. WARNING lots of pictures: The board features 4 M.2 slots.. Holy shit 3 of which are PCIe 3.0 x4, and 1 being for a wifi card. Yay it's fully featured on the front and rear The system will be able to accept up to 120W MXM cards, which will be provided with the barebones system (So basically, a GTX 1060 or RX 480/470/460 will be able to be used) but higher powered cards could be used if a more powerful power brick is used. Cooling will be handled by some sort of downdraft cooler, but no other pictures have appeared of it, and therefore we can't really say much about it other than it uses heatpipes and what looks to be a 90mm fan. I love Dreamcasts... Underrated console? Justifiable flop? Poor release timing? Say what you will, but I think they're great, in fact I have 3 of them. But unfortunately, the GD-ROM drive died on my daily driver, and without some costly parts from the modding scene, it wasn't worth resurrecting right now. So I stored it's guts in an anti-static bag, and decided that the case is going to form the basis of my first Small Form Factor build. Now I've seen DC-PC builds before... but never have I seen a really clean build, capable of gaming somewhat respectably. Most are from years back, built on ancient hardware, or without dedicated GPU's; The only one that did have one, also had pipes coming out of the side due to an AIO. So that doesn't count imho. Another build had a complete external desktop PSU...you see what I'm getting at here Rough spec STX motherboard. Smaller than ITX, but bigger than a NUC. If you've not heard of it I don't blame you... CPU will be an i5, probably a 6400T to help what will undoubtedly be 'tricky' thermals. PCIe powered GPU. For both simplicity and size, it'll likely be a 1050 mini. 8Gb DDR4, single stick of sodimm, budget as well as space restrictions here. SSD, capacity undecided. External power brick...because I haven't got the space to build that internally. I'm currently struggling with the setup of the power delivery, which effects the component selection more than with a normal build. For example, the power delivery I end up going with dictates whether I have an M.2 SSD or I can get away with a separate one and use the onboard slot for WiFi(STX boards all have dual M.2 slots). Also the size inherently means bad thermals, so whilst I want to keep it as original as possible, there's a high possibility of the rear of the console, I/O panel etc being entirely mesh. For anyone wondering, a Dreamcast has an internal volume of just under 2.8L.......so this should be fun... ***Currently seeking advice over on the Small Form Factor forums, about the viability of this build when using discreet graphics. The space limitations are real....But it'll 100% be built in some form or another, so I guess I can do a brief introduction post about it***

I have weird sound issues, that I can't figure out. When I shoot in games, the gun sound feels like increasing volume to irritating level, but background sounds doesn't. When I unmute/start listening to music/videos, I hear bang. This happens sometimes, not always. Every 30 sec or so sound decreasing from other side of headphones for couple of seconds and then goes back to normal. Any ideas what might be causing this issue?

I was looking to build a case for a stx board like this one. I can't find anything on where to put the holes though. Anyone know something I don't?

Right now my 970 strix is at 1.212v max and increases the voltage sliders on either afterburner or gpu tweak doesn't increase it. Just wondering what voltages others with a strix are able to get.

Hi, I've just bought the Audio-Technica ATH-M50X headphones and the AT2020USB+ microphone. I'll use them as my main audio set for all kind of stuff as gaming, listen to music, video and audio editing, etc... My biggest question is, how much an Asus Xonar Essence STX can improve my headphones audio quality and if the Xonar has any kind of Virtual Surround Sound for stereo headphones, and if it has it, is it part of the board (hardware) or it's done by software? Even more important, if any of you have this Sound Card how good is the Virtual Surround Sound?

I have an Essence STX which has been sandwiched between 2 HD6970 for the past year n half. Now i hopped up to a STRIX 970 with the plans to get another soon i have found a few issues. First off the back of the STX touches the 970's cooler, this wasn't an issue before with the HD6970's cos they had plastic shrouds, being reference design, so i didnt cause any issues. With the 970 it has a metel shroud which i really like but i get a static feedback and interference from it that i cant here with my headphones. Next is airflow, i have a 350D, i dont want i bigger case i like this one, i was able to get away with the reference cards cos the fan intake was away from the sound card. Its not a massive issue with the Asus STRIX 970 it does much better anyway idling @37 - 41C but i would prefer to have the sound card out of the way of the second fan on the gpu. Few other notes, i would like suggestions for external DACs/AMP that can drive my Beyer DT880 premiums, they are the 250 Ohm variants. Also a separate power, ie not powered from usb but from the wall, so ideally i could just use it as an amp for anything with a 1/4 inch jack or as a DAC for my PC. Outputs must be 1/4 inch.

I just installed a new Asus Xonar Essence STX in my system with Windows 8.1. But I do not get any sound to my headset... The headset works in other computers and in the same computer before I installed the soundcard, so there is nothing wrong with the headset. I have plugged in the internal power cord and installed the latest driver for Windows 8.1 from the Asus website. I can see the soundcard in the playback devices list and if I play a song it looks like sound is playing but no sound is actually being produced. I've changed the default device to the correct one and I've made sure that I've plugged in my headset in the correct spot. So, what the heck can be wrong? Why am I not getting any sound? I've uninstalled the realtek driver that I had installed before for my motherboards built-in soundcard and also in the uefi I've disabled the internal sound (motherboard sound...) so that the only devices to choose from (in the playback devices list) is the sound from my graphicscard and the asus soundcard, not the motherboards soundcard. Please help me! I just bought this card and it was quite the disappointment that it didn't work... Thanks!

Hey guys! How's it going? Not so great for me... Just received my Essense STX and HD558s and installed everything in my computer. Naturally, I turned it on and started to listen to some tracks, but I'm pretty dissapointed. I mean, I can notice a bit of an improvement over my old USB Razer headset, but for $320 I was expecting quite a bit more. What could I possibly be doing wrong? Hearing through iTunes, driver software is as it came when it installed and headphnes are connected to line out behind the Sound Card. Any help!? THANKS!!!!

Hello! I'm fairly new to the world of audio equipment, but decided it was about time to have a proper setup for listening to music. I went ahead and purchased an Asus Zonar Essence STX after much research and forum advice hunting, and I'm pleased with the card. Since purchasing the sound card, I've been hunting for a better pair of headphones (currently using Astro A40s [from my console days ]) and just tonight I discovered that the Sennheiser HD 558s that I've had my eye on for a while were on sale at NCIX, So I decided to grab a pair. ($80 off, w/ free express shipping if you were interested [ends tomorrow, 05/15/13], couldn't pass it up!) This is the part where my question comes in; the Essence STX has 3 gain settings: Normal Gain (0dB for <64 ohms), High Gain (+12dB for 64~300 ohms), and Extra High Gain (+18dB for 300~600 ohms). I've avoided going above the normal setting with my A40s as I'm not entirely sure of the driver specifications. Moving on to the HD 558s however, I see the impedance spec'd at 50 ohms, but I'm curious as to whether I should jump up to the "High Gain" setting, or leave it as it is at "Normal Gain". I suspect that there is a 50 ohm specification for a reason, but again, I'm quite a noob when it comes to audio equipment. I think this wonderful forum should take care of my curiosity and I. ;) -Dusty

hi guys, i recently bought asus xonar essence stx soundcard and i have some problems understanding how it works. i hope that youll help me. im confused because i can change the sample rate and bit bepth in xonar control panel and Windows control panel (Win 7) > sound > speakers > properties > advanced. for example in xonar control panel i set 24 bit 96khz but in windows the numbers are as the default - 16 bit 41 khz. i think that they need to be the same in soundcards control panel and windows. and thats why im confused because i cant understand with what settings my music is playing. and when i set in Windows control panel > sound > speakers > properties > advanced over 16 bit 48000 hz or over 24 bit 48000 hz xonar control panels eq stops working. i hope that you guys will tell me some tips or guides how can i set my sound card properly. ps. onboard audio is disabled in bios

Im using my ATH-M50 headset with my new Asus Xonar Essence STX soundcard.. I was ready for the sound to get way higher and the feature to add way more bass to the soundstage. but I was some what disappointed, because I did not feel the money I put in the the soundcard was worth it. But then I saw this feature in the Xonar Essence STX Audio Center When I turned the Headphone Impedance up to "Extra High Gain" or +18dB" (See picture 1) I got the sound I was looking for, even just with 20/100 Volume, but after selecting it I got this warning (See picture 2) The thing im wondering about is it is really damaging my headphones if im not going over 20/100 Volume? Because im really sure my ATH-M50 arent made for this, but I cant go back to the normal setting after it.. Also which headphones do you guys recommend if I want to use the "Extra High Gain" or +18dB" setting?

So I just recently got myself an essence stx to pair with my shure se 535s and I'm really disappointed in it. As you can probably guess by the title, there is an annoying background hiss when you have no audio playing; and that is very discouraging. I figure if I drop 200 bucks on a sound card it should at least not make any noise when playing nothing.... Does anyone have any suggestions? I've tried playing with the settings and turned off SVN and it seems nothing I do eliminates the hiss. (on a side note, if you change the out put to something that isn't the headphones, then there is absolutely no noise. which when you've been listening to hiss for a couple minutes sounds great :P)

Hi, I have an Asus Xonar Essence STX soundcard and there is a problem with the microphone input in Windows 7 (64-bit). My microphone is a studio condensator mic, which is plugged into a microphone pre-amp. The pre-amp is plugged into the soundcard's microphone port with a 6.3mm jack. This works great on some applications: using Adobe Premier Pro or Audition to record audio works fine. Also when I go to input devices in Windows the "green bar" next to microphone lights up when I make a sound and also "listening to the device" gives me an excellent audio signal. However on some applications the audio level of my microphone is extremely low. So low that when I turn up my pre-amp all the way it's still barely audible, but by then the clipping is so bad you can't make out the words. The issue seems to have something to do with Windows audio session (WASAPI), because when I use Mumble in compatibility mode for win XP I can use Direct sound and the audio is fine, but when I use mumble normally I can only use WASAPI and the above problem occurs. Using the Asus drivers or the Unified Xonar drivers makes no difference. Please help! I have looked everywhere and can't find the solution. Audio playback on the stx is awesome by the way

I've been thinking about getting rid of my current full-size receiver that I've been using as a headphone amp. What is the best choice quality-wise between Magni and Modi or an internal soundcard? Source is obviously my PC, and usage is mostly music, but also movies and gaming. These are a few soundcards that are on the same price bracket as the Schiit equipment: Asus Xonar D2X Asus Xonar Essence ST Asus Xonar Essence STX These soundcards would be a little less expensive, since the schiit will have to be shipped from the US all the way to Finland.

I have a Asus Essence STX sound card and some old Bang & Olufsen speakers, similar to Beovox x35's. What do i do to connected them up to my sound card? Im guessing ill need some kind of beefy amp to power them?
