  1. DIY the fastest handheld for too much money warning: this is stupid, but if you want the fast handheld pc, this is an option. Also need to be very tech-savvy. (or very stupid (or both)) to actually do this. Question? What is faster than a ROG Ally but smaller than an itx pc? It's the motherboard of an alienware x17 12900hk (very important that it's that CPU(unless you know how to undervolt a 12700h(I don’t))). The reason for the choice is that it is too my knowledge. The smallest, most compact, motherboard that is available with a CPU that can be undervolted. The steps are quite simple really. 1: Acquire alienware x17 with 12900hk. For somewhat high resolution photos of the motherboard, I suggest the pictures from this seller on eBay https://www.ebay.com/itm/166369177351?epid=20059595121&hash=item26bc602f07:g:Xb0AAOSwjOllK8Tu&amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAA0DuhiKAcX%2BQi8kj%2Bp2xSRBPLDRlrlPrIAX4CD%2BCNE9y55Mi66%2Bw%2FUGuati20mFkwWOdjK2SzJV%2BPmd%2F%2BQhj2u9lYQLoqFNR9pZVJpvG5AzQomZQqOFcPvGHXNJdzQnxrKTLW6m5330xPj1NaAABMF4W6DetNfPgokUWmXHYM54w%2FDxL8h8VncdjZxUMbC2efUUUzIvMPlc%2BJfnl0qY5Tx66oCUxks5mjwQtFy90RMK8RBYnjMzeTnB5faI7RTe%2BN6XtWT2Oqfm2MaeOFierC5Pw%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR_LnvLabYw 2: Undervolt the shit out of it. So it draws as little power as possible 3: Figure out cooling, and battery. 4: now for the controls, some laptops complain if the keyboard is not plugged in to the motherboard, I don't know if that is the case here. If so, I suggest going with the clamshell style. Small keyboard on the bottom, with flip-up screen on top, and half of a sawed off controller on each side. 5 hopefully while reading this you have already been thinking of a design for this amalgamation to go in, if not you should probably get on that now. After figuring all that out, you should hopefully have a working handheld pc that still is guzzling power too hot is heavy and quite big. But faster than anything else on the market. Good luck an idiot. Disclaimers: This is stupid and perhaps impossible. This was written by someone that does not know enough about this kind of things to actually be writing this. And lastly I am dyslectic and English is not my first language so grammatical errors are inevitable.
  2. I bought an Apple iPad 6th Gen off of ShopGoodwill recently, and it came locked. I erased it and got activation lock. I need to bypass it, and have contacted Apple multiple times, and they refuse to help me. I want to bypass it because I really want to get into drawing. Whether I can bypass it or not, Activation Lock is a real problem. It's proposed as an anti-theft feature, yet there's no way for Apple or Me to contact the original owner to remove it! The only way the Activation Lock is removed is if the original owner is tech-savvy enough to know how to remove it. There's no system in place for Apple or a bot to contact the original owner to see if he/she can remove it. Activation Lock is broken, and is reducing millions of devices to e-waste. Someone should really make a petition about this or smth. It's been annoying me a lot. Anyways if you can help, I'd appreacite it.
  3. Looking for some 3090s for an upgrade and found this
  4. Developers will have games run on both the PC and Switch. My Pixel 7 Pro is more powerful than the Switch but does not get those same games! That makes me so freaking angry! Like I cannot contain it anymore! I am done with smartphones entirely! Developers won't port to them? Well then, no more upgrading to powerful phones! I am downgrading my Pixel 7 Pro to an HTC ONE X. It being 32-bit-only means that there is an actual technical reason as to why it cannot run those games. No more bashing my head against the wall waiting for developers to support Android officially. No more bashing my head against the wall waiting for Yuzu to better support Mali GPUs. I will just use an HTC ONE X for most normal smartphone stuff, with the very best I can expect out of it being Dreamcast games. One way I shown I was already giving up on Android devices was trying to find a used gaming laptop and a cellular module. Unfortunately, the cellular modules are too hard to find or are too expensive.
  5. So i have a plan for a server rack thats about 22u tall. One of the servers i plan on having in it is a NAS. I plan on hooking up a 10g sfp+ connection to it between my nas and my main tower. The idea is to edit off of it. I dont plan on having 200gb size files or somthing but i was wondering whats the minimum bandwidth you would recommend for this task? is there any cpu bottle necks i should consider? I was planning on throwing in either some reasonably cheap amd cpu or intel server chip. My plan is an all ssd nas ( i hate hard drivesand avoid if i can help it). Prob sata ssds since i have no idea how i would do a nvme ssd array for this kind of a task. The idea is atleast 8 if not 16 drives (using 2 sas/sata hba.) I since i will be editing off of them i was planning on using a zfs solution. Mabey proxmox or somthing. And yes i am aware this is crazy stupid but i have an addiction to storage and i need to fill it. No idea what case im using but since they will be sata ssd i can just double side tape every thing worst case.
  6. Okay so I was browsing YouTube just chilling like one does, And suddenly out of the blue an ad happens upon me unfortunately I didn't have time to record it but it was really really cheesy and to basically sum it up some girl was complaining that she had to flip phone and then her parents bought her this phone but they still had the "peace of mind" that their daughter was safe. And the most crappy thing about this phone is it can't do anything that most mobile devices can do. On one hand that would be cool I guess for like little kids. Thing is though this is being advertised to TEENAGERS. Anyways I think you should look at this if you want a laugh and linus you should review this or something. https://gabbwireless.com/product/gabb-phone-z2/
  7. okay, to make it short I have a Gigabyte GeForce Rtx 2060 Super Gaming OC 8GC GDDR6. This version has 3 noisy fans. why not just put 2 to 3 NF-A12x25 PWM Fans on it instead? Just pull off the plastic surroundings with the fans and connect noctua fans with some zip ties? I can controll the fan speed with a hub that shouldn't be the problem. Why? Less noise and Temperature. please give me your thoughts.
  8. Please pick your favorite color in the alphabet
  9. I know this is... well... morbidly stupid.. so please dont replay " ItS StUpId " I know that I am stupid. now the main topic, I want to download some parts, or a few pages of the terraria.wiki.gg ... How does one do that ? and I know that I could screenshot the pages, buttttt... that's ( A) Boring. (B) Wayyyy toomuch work (C) Not what a Tech nerd would do. So, please enlighten me, with your Vast knowledge on, How to download a wiki.
  10. Another day at the office.. This time- printers! Gotta love 'em. When they work, they sort of don't and if the don't they will not. To the point, I get a call today regarding a printer issue. Teacher: Hi, I can't get my printer to print an Excel spreadsheet. Me: Ok, any error coming up? Teacher: No, but it asks me to select a printer and when I do (surprisingly the correct one) it says "unable to communicate". Me: I'll be right down. I go down the the classroom and I find the printer turned off. I tell the teacher that's it turned off and they are very surprised- usually it glows in 3 different places and makes noises but they didn't seem to notice. I go about turning it on and pressing print... BOOM! MAGIC! It works! God damn it... Another 15 minutes wasted. I want to do VMs!!
  11. i need some help. it dosent let me do it. how do i install a iso file thing like an image. please help! thanks!
  12. Hello, so when i was putting in a screw on the mobo i dropped by screwdriver and i noticed the lithium ion battery came loose, is there any way to fix this or am i screwed?
  13. i'm assuming that everyone's heard of the new intel lineup. i'm going to be completely flat out and say the entire series is extremely stupid for almost any argument. this is going to be a long post with a lot of reading. if you are afraid of words, you've been warned. i'm going to link oc3d's graph here to help show my point. source: https://www.overclock3d.net/news/cpu_mainboard/intel_officially_announce_their_new_skylake-x_and_kaby_lake-x_series_processors/1 Archtecture Process Cores/Threads Base Boost 2.0 Boost 3.0 PCIe lanes TDP Price Core i9 7980XE Skylake-X 14nm+ 18/36 ? ? ? ? 165W? $1999 Core i9 7960X 16/32 ? ? ? ? 165W? $1699 Core i9 7940X 14/28 ? ? ? ? 165W? $1399 Core i9 7920X 12/24 ? ? ? ? 165W? $1199 Core i9 7900X 10/20 3.3GHz 4.3GHz 4.5GHz 44 140W $999 Core i7 7820X 8/16 3.6GHz 4.3GHz 4.5GHz 28 140W $599 Core i7 7800X 6/12 3.5GHz 4.0GHz N/A 28 140W $389 Core i7 7740X Kaby Lake-X 4/8 4.3GHz 4.5GHz N/A 16 112W $339 Core i5 7640X 4/4 4.0GHz 4.2GHz N/A 16 112W $242 at the bottom end, there's the i5 7640x. quad core with no hyperthreading. almost nothing at all has changed with its pricing over the 7600k, that is a seriously fatal flaw since the ryzen 5 1600 is a 6 core with hyperthreading for $20 less. other than raw clock speed and consuming a crazy amount of power, what does it gain? its on the fancy new socket, yet has no additional pcie lanes. unless intel is planning to go to a one socket system for every chip form now on, this bottom tier chip makes absolutely no sense. the i7 7740x is a very similar story. same price bracket as before. no extra pcie lanes. very slight bump in clock speed. you can pick up an 8 core 16 thread for $20 less again. if the 2066 socket is supposed to be the workstation/enthusiast gaming hybrid type, so far the bottom tier chips are extremely underwhelming considering the new amd chips. the i7 7800x is, as far as i can see, a faster 6800k. this is one of the more impressive clock speed bumps here, and it is actually lower in price compared to the 6800k. this is one of the least worst chips of the lineup. its only downside is the price still. even though its cheaper than last gens counterpart, we still have to keep in mind that the ryzen 1700 is only $315, and features more cores and consumes less power. the i7 7820x looks good on paper. faster speeds than the 7800x, and with 2 more cores. but then the price of $600 comes and shoots itself in the foot. if they could've had it at $500, it would've been an incredibly good choice. but instead theres a $100 gap between the 7800 and 7820 for just 2 more cores. once again i bring up amd ryzen. the 1500x is quad core and cost $190. the 1700 is $315. that's only $125 for 4 more cores and 8 more threads! all this new intel series is proving is just how good price/perf is on amd ryzen. the first of the i9s, the 7900x, seems to mostly be a 6950x rebadge using the price it should've originally had at $1000 instead of the ludicrous $1700. I still feel like its a solid $300 too expensive, because you have to consider the 1800x. 8 cores for $500. 10 cores for $700. seems fair enough to me. but no. overpriced intel is overpriced. it seems more overpriced if you consider that you can fairly easily overclock a 1700 or 1700x to perform at or above 1800x speeds. the rest of the lineup might as well be xeons they're so overpriced. only the foolish should look at these, unless they really must HAVE to have an intel badge on their cases and hate their money. ryzen threadrippers details havent been annoucned yet as of this post, but if their current pricing lineup is going to be anything like the ryzen 3/5/7 series, then i wouldn't expect their top end 16c/32t chip to cost more than $1300. in fact i suspect them to be even less than that. intel has lost their mind this generation. i know that the price of the new boards and socket come into play as well when it comes to price/perf. but if i look at that, then the story only gets worse for intel. considering you can pick up and overclocking b350 motherbard for around $80, and an 8 core ryzen chip for $315, you can have a $400 combo that will be much better value than any of the intel combinations. i'm sure that x299 boards will not be cheap. before you could argue that intel had a few things going for it like thunderbolt tech, but now that thats open source, i see very little reason to even consider the new intel lineup. it is true that we have no idea how these new chips will overclock. but unless they can be like the legendary sandy bridge lineup and hit 5ghz without getting stupidly hot (looking at you 7700k), i see no reason to look at team blue until they can fix their prices. even so, given intels bad history with high tdp cpus not overclocking that great, i dont think many of these chips will live up to that. i know one of the first thoughts going through your minds might go something like 'wow such an amd fanboy/intel hater', but i'm not. i've run intel for many years starting at second gen, and until recently was running a 5820k system. but with amd back in the game with unbeatable price/perf, i went team red for the first time since the old phenom II days. those are my thoughts. not sure how many people will see this, or how many will even give their own opinions. but i wanted to get my views out there anyways. thanks for reading so far. you deserve an internet cookie. you already have the attention span grater than 99% of the internet.
  14. is is safe to just end task on "system" and some other program in task manager since its likely to use 99% of my HDD and slow my laptop down, or is there any alternative because this just stupid. it's slow down and i can't see a clear view of my video editing preview, it's annoying.
  15. So. I did a hard reset on start up. Now my computer won't post. I would put up full specs but can't really access them and haven't written them down, so here's what I can remember: AMD A4-5300 APU, 16GB ram, MSI FM2-A75MA-P33. I realised right after I done it how stupid it was, so what has happened and is it fixable? Thanks P.S. I'm a bit of a pc noob so simple terms please P.P.S Its not a new build, been using for a year or two now.
  16. I wanna know is it possible to make a backplate for some gpu that will not overweight it so it must be safe and I wanna know how to make it from what and so on u got it guys. Thx!!!
  17. I have a large external speaker that I plug into the analogue audio ports on my motherboard. It randomly stopped working yesterday and I was extremely confused. I knew it wasn't the speaker so I repetitively uninstalled and reinstalled audio drivers. Today I then manually uninstalled the Realtek driver and downloaded it again. I Looked at the port my speaker was plugged into and googled what colours did what. Ok. So Green means output. I then bend over, unplug the speaker and flash my torch. Only to see the port my speaker was plugged into being blue. ?
  18. Hello fellow geeks, I'm planning to build my own unRAID NAS, but running VMWare in my homelab already got me thinking. "What if the NAS also runs VMWare?" So that set off a whole string of ideas of which my last one has such a thin line between genius and stupid I just have to do it. The idea: Get an SSD and a bunch of large harddrives. Don't get a RAID controller Install VMWare on the SSD Install unRAID in a VM (on the SSD) Attach the harddrives to the unRAID VM (direct mapping, not an image) Create a RAID volume in unRAID like normal and enable CIFS, NFS, etc. shares. Attach the unRAID volume to VMWare via NFS so I can run more VMs with plenty of disk space. Optional bonus stupid idea: create a Windows VM and attach an iSCSI volume to it so I can use native Windows credentials for shares. And presto, a NAS and VMWare box all in one.
  19. Ever wondered how cool it is to have a mouse that doesn't heat-up due to the friction and the long hours being help in gaming or just doing office stuff? I was wondering if Linus or anyone would design such. Think about it, you can customize the weight by adding the amount of liquid inside it, keep the whole thing cool, mice feet would have less wear. I will make one once I have enough money and hope that maybe it'll be made for production someday
  20. Just for fun, list the dumbest thing you've ever done while building or working on a PC. Mine was leaving the plastic sticker on the bottom of the CPU cooler block when installing it Luckily, I realized this before booting the computer up.
  21. I feel like 2017 has been the best and also the worst year to build a gaming rig. The good part about 2017 has definitely been pascal (even tho it came out in may 2016 but the prices have only come down significantly in 2017), the really nice and cheap deepcool cases, Ryzen, and sort of coffee lake. But my god. The prices for ram has increased almost 300% over the last year. WTF. I remember back in mid-late 2016 when you could buy a 1x8gb stick of DDR3 for $36 Australian dollars (about 28 US dollars), but ever since april 2017 ive noticed the prices getting higher and higher, i remember one day i was on pcpartpicker parting out a rig just because i was bored and thats what i do in my spare time. The same crucial 1x8gb stick of ddr3 was around $50 and i was kind of shocked. The cheapest 1x8gb stick of ddr3 right now it $84 australian dollars. WHAT?! And DDR4 is no different, the cheapest 8gb kit being 99 freaking dollars. This increase in ram prices alone has made 2017 a very bad year to build a gaming pc, because if you are like by my estimate around 70% of PC gamers out there, you are usually building with a budget of around 600-800 dollars. and having to spend $100 on only 8 gigs of memory is a real pain in the ass especially since very popular games like Battlefield 1 and PUBG need 12 gigs of ram at the minimum. Can somebody please explain to me why the damn ram is so damn expensive and will it get better any time soon?
  22. So I was poking around the web last night. My laptop has a cooling problem every now and then so I was looking at laptop cooling pads and out of shear curiosity I decided to see if someone had attempted to make a liquid cooled one... Well... I found this... The "Cool Breeze Liquid Cooling Pad". I was interested. Not the kind of interested that would lead me to pay nearly $80 but the kind of interested you get when you can smell snake oil flooding the room. I did some poking around. At first I assumed the brand was "Cool Breeze" but all that yielded was a refrigeration company and a rapper. After a closer look at the Amazon page I realized the company was actually "PC Treasures"; an OEM company that distributes software along with some phone and tablet accessories. However, even their own website doesn't have this thing on it. I decided to pop on over to google images to see if anyone had an actual picture of thing instead of just the little marketing material I had found. No pictures of customers holding it but I did find something else. something much, much better. I found a diagram of it's internal workings and I must say, it's kept me giggling for the better part of an hour. So, Apparently the way this thing works is you place your laptop on it, it circulates water underneath and blows the air from the radiator back onto your laptop... I never expected a liquid cooled laptop pad to work very well but I guess I did expect at least a certain amount of logic to be applied when designing it. You know, like, maybe the surface of the pad is a water block that your laptop touches and the radiator is in the back blowing the hot air away from your computer. But instead it looks like they tried to use the radiator as the water block while also using it as a radiator at the same time and are just exhausting the air (presumably hot air but probably not considering the design) back into your laptop. Essentially what you get for $80 is a regular old, $10 laptop cooler that someone made out of aluminum and slapped on a pump and radiator that do nothing just to jack up the price. So what do you guys think? Am I missing something or is this thing as hilarious as I think it is?
  23. So, I have exactly $1.33 USD left on a Visa card and I want to use it all up. Exactly $1.33. So the challenge is, find an item or list of items that total $1.33 USD. I know it's stupid anyway I'd like it to be useful stuff I'd actually want but it can be really dumb if you want too cuz this whole idea is dumb XD. Anyway, happy searching
  24. Hello! So yesterday I was working on a computer, and got some thermal paste on my hands. I washed it off with soap and water, big deal. Then, when dinner was done I got my hamburger and fries. When I was done eating, I saw thermal paste on my finger. Being a bit scared, I washed it off. I went to bed a few hours later and... There's thermal paste on my hand! I think it's all gone now, but I just want to make sure I'll be okay.

    What if

What if I connected two of the SATA ports on my motherboard with a SATA cable? Would stuff break? Probably.
