  1. Hello today i would like to shre this story with you. Last year i bouth GIGABYTE GTX 1660 Ti for 120 USD. Before that i had GTX 950 whitch was solid for my old WXGA (1366x768) monitor, that was alright i could played my favorite games (Beamng.drive,Wither3,Minecraft) at medium high settings. But i upgraded to 1440p and the 2GB VRAM in GTX 950 just didn't had in it to play games smoothly. If i wanted to play Witcher 3 i needed to crank setting to lowest possible an i still needed to play at 1080p to get 30 FPS so i needed upgrade. Why 1660 Ti? Ok first you need to know that i have I7-3770 (non-K), if you go google and search best gpu for I7 3770 you will get something like RX 580 or GTX 1650 sooo why GTX 1660 Ti? Another thing you should know is that electrisity does cost's something here in EU so i was looking for lowest TDP possible. Firstly i went lookinng for GTX 1650, they have nice 65W TDP but they were for like 140+ USD that was too much price for that performance. Yeah i could have bought something like RX 580 for under 90 USD but it had like 3X bigger TDP, yeah AMD GPUs has great prices but terrible TDP so nVidia is it then. I was looking for every single 10 series and 16 series GPU. 1650 Super, 1070, 1080 Ti, you name it. GTX 1080 (100 USD) and 1080 Ti (150 USD) had nice performance and price but TDP was too high soo i landed on this GTX 1660 Ti. You might say well aren't you CPU bottlencked now? No actuallly in most games im still GPU bottlenecked. Those games are Witcher 3, GTA 5, Fortnite, Forza horizon 4, Minecraft (with shaders), World of Tanks, and more. The only game that im no GPU bottlenecked is Beamng.drive. Would i recommend it? Yes But if you have some more money to spend you shoud get something like RTX 2060 because nVidia is limiting GTX series on the new stuff like RTX or DLSS even tho this card is more than capable of something like Minecraft RTX
  2. My brother once told me that he'd host lan parties back in the college days (UBC) where supposedly Linus would attend ( and someone else whos name I'm pretty sure is Jake ). Does anyone have any information to prove or disprove this story? I am pretty sure these parties were in the early 2000s.
  3. Let me start off by saying: this post *and hopefully subsequent replies from people that know what they're doing* is meant for the people that decided to try mining (or are about to) and don't know where to start research-wise. If anyone has any suggestions on how I should purge my system after hearing my tale, please leave some feedback below. Thanks! Before you even consider reading the rest of this post if you're halfway serious about beginning your journey into mining, create a system restore point now. This will be an invaluable step to giving you peace of mind later. You'll also avoid my mistake. Story time, it's a long one. I once saw a video from a certain Media Group that promoted being able to mine using a piece of software called NiceHash. I'd always wanted to get into mining crypto, I just built a sweet new personal gaming PC with modern parts, and since I had just opened up a coinbase account, I figured I had a place to put those coins and now was a good time (for the old dogs that just cringed reading that, this journey of a thread will hurt) I wanted to get this thing up as quickly as possible, so the NiceHashQuickMiner was the best way to go. Followed the link in the video description, created an account, watched a setup video, and away I went. AntiVirus? Nah, we'll shut it up and download it anyway, people are saying we're good. Let the auto-overclock do it's thing and ran the miner in the background when I slept, turned it off during my work/stream hours and kept that up for a few days. This went on for about 4 days. I was curious what the payout was like and decided to do a little digging. Turns out, even with my 3070, I was scheduled to only make about $7/week. That sounded WAY lower than what my skyrocketed expectations and youtube hype-men's words had flowered, so I decided to dig deeper. I found a few videos talking about some beef between NiceHash and some other mining software and scoffed at it at the time, thinking "lol, guess it's a crazy world out there. Some people must really just want profits." I know, I hate me too. Turns out, yes, you can get paid more mining on your own (in my case, about 5x). You see, you aren't mining in the traditional sense. Instead of trying to mine for a block the old fashioned way, you're essentially renting your PCs hardware out to NiceHash. They behave as a brokerage service so that people with cryptocurrency will pay them with said currency to use YOUR computer (and everyone else's that is using that application) to mine crypto for the top buyer, and you're getting a service fee from that transaction. If I've learned one thing about brokerages from playing the stock market since the beginning of quarantine, it's that the only people that truly profit off of these transactions are everyone but the workers. So I decided I wanted to leave NiceHash behind for now. I wouldn't get rid of it entirely, especially since I still had unpaid funds left sitting in the account that hadn't yet reached the payout balance. Instead, I'd start looking into how I could quickly and easily get some mining software to start up to mine Ethereum Classic, the little brother to the new darling of the crypto mining world. I did a quick google search and, wouldn't you know it, all of the suggestions started pouring in. Sites in Russian, domains that end in .xxx, maybe a blog post or two from some random news places I had NEVER heard of in my life, you name it. I decided I wanted to go the easy route, something that just had a GUI and a "Mine" button that would magically do all the tinkering for me, and found out that there is a mining application built right into the Microsoft Store on Windows! What luck, Microsoft approved a mining app, this has to be safe and secure, it even has a discord. No virus popup either! You might notice I'm not dropping the name, yea, that's because after I installed it, it didn't work. I put the settings in I needed to, pointed to a pool address (just googled what that was 5 minutes beforehand, but at least I made sure to choose the ssl protocol), gave it my address and hit go. Not a thing. I joined the discord for help and, as I later figured out, this application was made back in 2017, never updated, and the discord was a ghost town with no mods answering any questions and messages still coming in, but DAYS in between them. I decided this may be a bit too sketch for my taste and that I should do a little more research, maybe taking the year into account. Uninstalled, ran a virus scan. After that bust, I decided to try downloading a couple flavours of miners just to test the waters. After looking into some other sketchy blog-like websites that touted "THE BEST ETH AND ETC MINERS OF 2021", I decided to try BFGminer and ETHminer. I learned my lesson (kinda) about making sure the source was the right one. BFGminer's website looked kinda sketch, but after seeing SEVERAL (as in 5) reddit/blog posts saying the site and miner was legit, I gave it a download, extracted it (while AV was disabled, re-enabled after extraction) and started looking at the files. ETHminer, I found the official github page (thank god) and got the version that worked with my hardware, but saved extracting it for it BFG didn't work out. I didn't know what I need to click to make anything run, I tried going through the readme, didn't see anything immediately helpful, so I just clicked on the exe. Nothing happened. Didn't even see and command prompt window open. Took a few looks at it and said "okay, no GUI is opening, not liking this. Let's move to the other one." Tried running it in admin mode *note: DON'T DO THIS* Thought I might've accidentally opened an instance running in the background and then realized "oh crap, it might be running but I didn't run it right so I can't see it. Might as well full shutdown to clear it out, then try to configure it." All the while, Kaspersky was freaking out saying "hey, this isn't a virus since you said you wanted it, but criminals use this thing. You know that, right?" I was getting frustrated not knowing what to do with these files I just downloaded and executed on my computer, so I said screw it. I decided I wanted to use nanopool, and it turns out they have a miner that they have ready to mine on the pool, just put your address, rig name and email in and you're good to start! Got it from their official github page, filled in the blanks, click run and... AV blocks the execution of it. No problem, just run it in admin mode. After that, no problems popping up. It's running over SSL so no MITM crap or redirects, I'm not running the card very hard, only hitting about 60C and making sure it stayed within power limit and figured out I could make upwards of $5 a day! Decided to switch over to ETH at this point just to see what the hubbub is about and, hey, if it's gonna grow, I was fine with the mining rate the card was giving me. Then I met the dev fee. I had no idea what this was or why Nanopool was double dipping with a pool AND a dev fee, so I looked it up and found out "yea, Nanominer has a stupid high dev fee and it's fairly limiting. Just use Claymore or Phoenix miner instead, it has better performance and lower dev fees." Sold, this has become a for-profit in my spare time thing anyway, might as well optimize it. I didn't do any other research other than google the name "claymore miner," went to their website, found out their website sketched me out, found their github repo, and clicked download. I didn't want to waste any more time with configuring crap, so after I extracted it, I didn't even run the exe, just looked at the setup files. It seemed much more complicated than it was worth to set up, so I threw it in the recycling bin. Next one. Went to look at Phoenix miner and saw people praising it, saw setup guides on nanopool and other pools for it (oh yea, finally looked at pool options and found out ethmine might be a better choice), and all the posts were much more recent. This definitely felt like the right choice. Copped the miner from the official github page without much thought, plugged the commands into the batch file, and as soon as I tuned down nanominer, I started up Phoenix. I had been running Phoenix for a few days by that point and had gotten rid of all traces of other miners EXCEPT for Nicehash, the windows store one (honestly didn't remember it was there till later), nanominer and phoenix. Only ran phoenix for a couple days after. this all culminates to around 2-3 days ago when I finally did my own due diligence. I asked myself "so, phoenix seems to be popular, but I saw an article saying something about viruses and compromising versions of it? What's going on? Then I found Nicehash's statement. Big bold letters. "STOP using Phoenix miner immediately!" Oh poopy. I click on the article, read through it, and absolutely panic, as one does at a FUD article over a subject they know little about. But, while I'm reading through this article, I find responses to this with youtube videos, which I watch, that link to the bitcoin talk forum that has the official statements, releases, and whole thread from Phoenix Miner themselves. They denounce any wrongdoing whatsoever, I breathe a quick sigh of relief, riiiiiight before reading what their campaign against NiceHash entails. This is where I finally learn about the correspondence, the individuals previously associated with NiceHash , the practices occuring, all of it. As I am sitting there, absorbing both sides of the argument alongside words of wisdom from the OG miners while scrubbing through the thread, a sense of dread and a sudden realization washes over me. What the kibledy-bips did I do to my machine over the past 2 weeks. I downloaded not 1, not 2, but seven mining applications, the majority of which were unsigned, required me to disable my antivirus, and had to be run with heightened privileges to execute properly. I even uploaded the executables to a virus scanning site to cross-reference with all known databases, had half of them come back with "this is bad" and still went "well, that's life." None of that set any alarms off and I kept going until I found out that the best miners that were recommended were at each other's throats about how the other is too shady to be trusted. Not only this, I put all of this crap on my personal machine. Not a dedicated mining rig, not a throwaway laptop, not a secondhand PC with no data on it. My baby. I got sick. I continued doing research on mining applications and realized claymore, one of the apps I download, was caught in an exit scam and stole all their user's gains. I read stories about how people that used miners, even the legitimate copies, were getting hacked and had ransomware, remote desktop access, random user privilege assignments and credit card details stolen (although many of them also either downloaded some other shady program, or didn't get an official version of the mining software). All I knew at that point was that I was in over my head in an area I wanted to leave. I downloaded malwarebytes, started monitoring processes and services, uninstalled any application I hadn't used in the past month, went through the event logs to see if I was already compromised, and continuously scanned, quarantined, and deleted/shredded everything I could possibly think of that was tied to the miner on the machine. I checked the hash of every miner that I questioned whether it was official and whether or not it could be trusted (everything came back as the official SHA256 that I could find). While looking even deeper into the FUD stories of people that got hacked, I decided it was in my best interest to check my other devices such as my router to see if ports had been forwarded, slam my computer AND phone into VPN only mode for all apps, reset all of my access passwords for my machines and enable 2FA on all of the things, until I finally decided to take about 5 seconds and think about all the crap I was reading. The people that got hacked with mining software also had other shady downloads that they executed. A swathe of other people had suggested these miners, and all of them had a respectable amount of download or at least some semblance of safety tied to them that the damage could be undone. Even PhoenixMiner on their thread had stated "Why would we want to destroy a source of income for us. We can't get you to fully trust us, but maybe you'll believe we aren't idiots." Maybe I wasn't completely SoL. I looked more into it and, as expected, the scams that had happened in the past had already happened. I didn't find any logs that didn't already occur previously on the system or processes/services that weren't normal. New weird new apps installed, no strange behaviour. The only issues that could crop up were based on what I already had on there with binaries I had no idea about. Problem was, I already ran this code, and I couldn't just go back in tiiiiiiiiiiii-RESTORE POINT. Okay, not a fool-proof solution if you feel you've been hacked or have a virus, but at least a start. Go back to a restore point before you clicked the executable and ran the binaries and messed with the registry in ways YOU can't fix. I looked and, sadly, the furthest back my restore point was had been made after I had downloaded nanominer, meaning the BFGminer and ETHminer incidents would still have occurred. But, at least claymore and the current pressing issue, phoenixminer, would be wiped. I pulled the trigger on that and, as the computer restarted, flashed the bios for good measure. Sure, it overwrote my OC settings, but I can always set those again. It would be absolute mania trying to get another graphics card. As I write this, dear reader, I am running another few scans of MBAM and Kaspersky, uninstalling all the programs over again to ensure nothing foul remains, and plan on soft-resetting windows to leave my files but put a fresh coat over this install, where I will once again flash the bios after it's completion for good measure. Is it helping me sleep better tonight? NO. And this is the part where I leave the people looking to mine with guidelines and ask questions for the people that might be able to help me: 1. System restore. Do it if you haven't, do it again if you have. 2. bitcoin talk forum is THE place to go for mining any altcoin. They have a credit system that tells you how new someone is so you know who to avoid if they make a post about a miner, and the discussions there will point you in the right direction. 3. DON'T RUN IN ADMIN MODE. 4. Know that it will never be 100% safe. If that bugs you, this isn't for you. 5. Don't mine on your personal computer, if you can help it. It is possible if you trust the miner and have done the research (or know who to ask the right questions to) but unless you have some experience, it isn't worth risking your files to whatever attack might happen. Multiple ingress points here, even if you do things the right way. So, my questions and concerns to the experts: 1. Based on the miners I said I had used at the times I used them (or only downloaded), do you still think there is risk that something has injected itself into my system? I had only ever used SSL connections to the pools, but I did not always have my VPN on while mining, and obviously, admin mode was stupid. 2. Am I going far enough with a windows soft reset, or should I go ahead and pull the trigger on formatting my hard drives and re-installing fresh with a bios flash? I'd prefer not to lose lose some apps, passwords and a decent chunk of files, but they were mainly archival in nature and anything super important I have backups of elsewhere. 3. Do we know of any network-spreading 4. What do you recommend to people wanting to dip their toes into mining? Seems like the entire place is a minefield people are tiptoeing around while snipers attempt to pop them in the head, miss, and blow someone else up.
  4. I am 14 years old. Since last winter, I've wanted a gaming PC. Because of COVID-19, I had online school and I was able to have more free time, which I used to start a small yard work business. My first job was on May 5th. Around this time, I started planning the first version my parts list, which included a 9700K and a 2080 Super. Business grew, and by summer, I was making over CAD$1000 per month. Here is what my equipment looked like. This picture was taken in July. By mid-August, I had nearly enough money to buy the parts, and an updated parts list, including a new 10700K. I didn't think I would actually end up with it, but I persevered. A few weeks later, I finally bought the parts. I was able to snatch the last 10700K at my local Canada Computers store. My original build can be found here: Additionally, here are a few more pictures of this. I greatly enjoyed gaming on this system, and I felt very proud of my efforts. The story doesn't end here, however. Around the beginning of September, Nvidia announced the upcoming RTX 3000 cards. I wanted the 3080, and I was still able to return my 2080 Super to the store. (Slight coil whine that didn't really bother me allowed me to return it if I wanted to.) I decided to return the card and temporarily get a GTX 1650 Super, which I didn't actually end up using, and ended up returning unopened. Around this time, I was starting to look for my first job. Given my interest in computers, I applied at a local computer shop that specializes in IT. I won't mention the name of it, because it is rather small and local. A week later, I was hired for part-time work after school. I am so happy to be able to do something that I am passionate about and that I enjoy doing. I was also able to build free computers from hardware destined to be recycled. Since my gaming rig didn't have a graphics card, I used a free PC that I built from there for that time period. It has an i5 3570, a GT630, and 16GB of ram. On September 17, at the exact moment that Canada Computers opened that day, I immediately backordered the Tuf Gaming 3080 OC. I chose this card because I think it looks great, and I heard good things about it from people who got it early. I was the 2nd person in line for this specific card. On October 2nd, I was notified that a small shipment of Tuf Gaming 3080 OC's arrived. I got the card the next day. I immediately unboxed and installed it. Here are a few pictures of it. After I got the 3080, things started to settle. I was extremely happy. At work, things got better. I fit in perfectly, and I was very proud to be there. I biked to work every day after the online portion of my school. As the weeks went on, I found myself thinking about how my PC probably changed the course of my life. I probably wouldn't have considered working there, or working at all, if it wasn't for this. I'm extremely grateful for where it has taken me, the things I've experienced, and the people I have met along the way. Thanks to all for reading this. I thought it would be nice to post this here since I was heavily inspired by @LinusTech and his team. Linus, thank you so very much for inspiring me to do this. I'm extremely proud of where I am, and I wouldn't be anywhere near where I am now without you guys.
  5. (Admins pls don't ban me) I am thinking to make a fanfiction of LMG were you become a worker on LMG and you become a great friend of Linus. I think releasing it on mid 2023 to atleast creare 20 chapters.
  6. There was a point in time where I thought PC parts would always be around. And to an extent they have been, Shortages aside. But during the actual onslaught of technical progression many products rise and fall to the wayside. Some of these products are One-offs, Limited production, or cut early due to poor sales. Now days these discontinued products are slowly starting to see a new appreciation in value. The product I'm talking about is the Thermaltake Pacific PR2U 5.25" Dual Bay Reservoir [https://www.thermaltake.com/pacific-pr2u.html]. When the time came to build my Water cooling loop I knew that I didn't want a Cylindrical Reservoir. To me, they seemed basic and kind of tacky. I wanted something that would make my computer more unique. I've always loved 5.25" Bay reservoirs, even from a young age. Although I thoroughly missed the time when '5.25" Bays were in vogue' I spent many days searching for the right one. To no avail could I find anything that was actually Available at the time and had my required feature-set. I eventually found the Thermaltake 5.25" Dual Bay Reservoir on Amazon in early 2021. I ordered it and a few days later it arrived at my house. I had to wait a few more days to get the rest of my parts. Once everything arrived I mocked up everything cleaned, built, ran the loop outside of the computer to verify everything worked. I'm glad I did so as I found there was a leak on the inside of the Reservoir. (See the Spraying in the Picture and Video) Devastated at the fact of having to wait even longer for my loop to be finished, I drained the loop and broke everything down and put it all back. The next day I call up Thermaltake to redeem the warranty. (Thermaltake has some really good responsive warranty staff) They helped me through the steps as this was my first DOA Product. Moments later I obtained a shipping label and packed it up but, Thermaltake told me not to ship it just yet as they couldn't validate a replacement. "This is a discontinued product where not many were made. And even fewer were sold." A couple days go by and curiously I email them back. The person informed me that they were inventorying the warehouse. I asked for clarification and they responded with "We have 100's of employees working around the clock across all of our warehouses to find a valid replacement." At that moment I felt very special as I had the full power of Thermaltake searching for this Reservoir. I had a feeling they would find one. The next day they confirmed they found one and told me to ship the broken one. I'm convinced our packages crossed in the air as it took 5 days for the new one to come. And on the same day I got a delivery confirmation from Thermaltake. This Reservoir is pretty awesome. It was definitely worth everything. Looks sick and will continue to look sick for many years to come. Share your Old, Rare, or Discontinued Hardware Stories Below. 20210519_170419_Trim.mp4
  7. About 2 months ago I noticed my HDD started getting a little noisy so I looked into getting a new HDD or possibly a SSD for my prebuilt HP envy i7 6700. I picked up a 1TB firecuda just to have a back up of my main drive in case it failed. I then decided to finally stick a graphics card in this thing since I had been using the onboard geforce 530 graphics for the past year. I picked up an rx580. I get the card in and I quickly realized my mistake. I didn't check the PSU in my prebuilt. It had no 8 pin connector or spare sata connectors. So I ordered a random raidmax 530w psu. Then learned that psu was only a 20 pin and I needed 24. So I ordered H270 A-Pro mobo and some ddr4 gskill ageis ram. Then realized this case being a prebuilt by HP might have some weird problem with an ATX mobo so I ordered a case. Then it hit me how dumb I am being. Mind I have ordered all of this and its already shipped at this point. At this point I just said screw it did a bit of research and went to do a budget 3700x build but halfway through switched to a higher budget. Thats why I have a cheap case and ram.The Noctua cooler and fans came later. I do plan on upgrading my GPU. I just don't know if I can be patient enough to wait for the 30 series rtx stuff. Don't be stupid like me. Just properly plan out your builds... The 2 type of ram is because I did some late night intoxicated ebay auctions and ended up winning something I didn't really need but once it gets in I am swapping out the ripjaws. 8. About a week ago I went to Spain with my mother. We went to our friends there in the city called Oviedo. My friend there has a pretty sick setup and has an Acer Predator Z35. RIght when I started up a game I just fell in love with the monitor. I fell in love with it so much that I can't even play on my own monitor normally anymore (I have an Asus VE247). I decided to save up money to buy the monitor because my eyes were orgasming every 2 seconds while I was gaming on his monitor. But my question is, is there a monitor with allot of the features that the Z35 but for a lower price (Curved monitor and G sync is a must). Because close to 1000 Euros is allot of money. And also, I don't even own a Nvidia GPU yet so G sync will not even work (I'm planning to buy a 1070 after the monitor. And I have an AMD R9 390 now.)
  9. Just thirsty for a good steam game I have like 23 bucks on my account and need a good game to play......can't wait for the summer sale any longer lmao. Kinda want a good singleplayer game I'll take suggestions just no puzzle or strategy games really. Thanks in advance
  10. Well, I'm bored tonight so let's all gather round the camp fire and sing a camp... hmf, I mean tell a story. My tech career is kind of a weird one. I never had a current generation device until about 4 years ago when I got my PC, and only a year and a half ago for my console. I started generations behind and somehow got here. When I was younger, my parents never had money. Dad was bad with it, Mom kept us a float, you know that story. but i always loved electronics. I remember being real young, like 7ish and being amazed at my cousins N64 and i only ever played Pokemon. Never owned anything for myself, just kind of observed everyone else's. I didn't have many friends, and the ones I did have were basically in the same boat a me, except the one girl whos mom was a doctor, but girls don't game lol... My first "computer" would have been around 2006, when I was 8. It was the Comadore 64. We got it free off the side of the road, it was the same one as my dads from when he was younger. I was just amazed because it had like three storage containers of floppys full of games. I swear every day I was trying something new. Then about 6 months later came the NES. My dad plugged it into a 1980's cabinet tube tv and I would play Duck hunt and Mario for hours, mostly because the other games were weird off spin ones that were just being thrown away. A little while later I had a game boy colour my dad bought as a pair and a flea market for $10. That did me for a while until my dad picked my up an old desktop that was on the side of the road. Tube monitor, desktop, mouse, keyboard. That was my setup in my room. We would pick up $1 games at the thrift store and I would just plug away. Then, magically, I accidentally got into the bios and screwed it all up. Don't ask how, I can't remember. So then came the next one from the road, and the next. I started tinkering with these old pcs I found and create these weird franken computers that sometimes worked. Around this time by grandfather gave my an old shoulder top camera from like the 80's/90's that he found in his basement that I could only see my recordings on a tube tv, so I recorded random things and just watch them in the living room. Still have that thing kicking around. When I got the grade 7/8, my dad got me and my brother a PS2. It was my first game station that would play anything relevant anymore. Everyone else had a PS 3 and we bought it on clearance at Walmart with a couple games, but hey, we had fun. That did me for a while. My first phone was grade 8. It was a flip phone with $5 on it so I could call for a ride after practice. My dad took it back after a while because I didn't need it anymore and I didn't get another until grade 10 (cheap old samsung). In grade 9 I got my first laptop. A netbook on sale at Walmart, they got it for me for Christmas. It was my first real computer in my mind because it would actually connect to the internet. I broke the screen in my backpack when I kid pushed my and I dropped the bag a year later. In grade 11 I got into a live broadcasting class that produced a daily show in the morning for the school instead of standard announcements. It was thanks to that class that I got a basic understanding of editing, shooting, lighting, the works. I learned quickly to the point where I taught younger student for a new teacher that had come in the year after (another story on its own). Come grade 12 I had a job and saved up, bought a decent laptop. 17" HP with an I5 and I think a crappy graphics card. I would love to tell you how happy I was to have that thing I paid over a grand for with my saved work money... but less then a year later someone stole it from my bag during a rugby practice, with most of the schools yearbook photos that western uploaded yet, because I was the stupid editor... It was a rough year. Later that year I bought a desktop on sale for $1200 and a 27" dell monitor. A little after that, another laptop Dell XPS 13. Sad story, that monitor broke after a broom fell on it in my dorm room when I was studying in Ireland. Sucked balls. Bought an XBOX One in 2016, university blocked it on the wifi. Now, I'm rebuilding my PC before heading to another university for my second year of Architecture. Yeah. Crappy story, wierd story, but as I said. I was bored so why not. I went from 20 year old Comadore as a kid to everyone's fucking tech support that could literally be solved by a fucking google got damn it. Anyways, yeah. Now I'm addicted to tech and I blame that broadcasting class and the game boys for my addiction. I have a thousand fucking XLR cables and adapters just cause I can and rant on message boards.
  11. So a few days ago I decided it was time to OC my graphics card (MSI 7870 hawk). For the longest time I had a MOBO that did not support overclocking even a little bit... but then I got a new MOBO, a ASrock Z75 pro 3, awww ya its overclocking time. Now this was not my first dip into overclocking, I had overclocked my old laptop (NOT SUGGESTED, HOLY COW IT GOT HOT!) But this was my first time OC a desktop graphics card. So I open up MSI afterburner and after some testing this happened... Can you tell which one has the OC applied? its the one on the right... so... obviously something is wrong... after hours of searching and troubleshooting I found a solution (on LTTF no less), it turned out that some AMD cards have a interesting quirk... OC will not apply with auto fan control enabled... so I open up the AMD Control center, turn off fan control... and viola! I had gone a little overboard with the OC trying to get it to work so this was a unstable OC (as seen by the min framerate XD) so after some tweaking I got a stable OC (I actually only had to turn it down 20MHZ) so in conclusion I think its a pretty good first experience with desktop overclocking. I learned quite a bit (like how to do custom fan curves because AMD sucks). has Anyone else experienced interesting/wacky anomalies while OC? post in the comments!
  12. Somehow 4 laptops broke. (And 1 phone) #1 The first one broke at my brother's home. It was connected to a power strip as usual. There were other things connected to the power strip as well but it wasn't overloaded. Then suddenly the laptop was dead. No light, nothing. #2 The second one was a replacement for the first one. It was connected to the same power strip like the first one and after a few days the same thing that happened to the first laptop happened to this one as well. For a short time a light worked again but now everything is dead. Recently my brother gave me this laptop because I wanted to open it up and check if I can find the problem. But everything looked normal except the input for the power adapter - it was dirty. (On a sidenode: This laptop had one 4 GB RAM module and 4 GB soldered onto the motherboard???) During the time these 2 laptops died my brothers phone died as well when he wanted to charge it but this happened where I live, not at his home. But he got it fixed for free. #3 Number 3 is my old laptop. I haven't used this PC in weeks. I installed the HDD of #2 in this one to see if it still works but then #3 didn't want to turn on as well. I plugged in the power adapter and the charging light still worked. But after I tried to turn it on again, the only thing that happened was that not even the charging light works anymore. This happened at my house. #4 This one was just an old laptop we had lying around. I connected the power adapter, turned it on and the fans start spinning but the screen didn't turn on. The next time I started the laptop, nothing happened. This happened at my house. Yeah, now we probably have 4 dead laptops. The forth one was very old (it had Windows Vista on it) and no one used it anyways. I wanted to get a new battery and a new drive for my old laptop (number 3) so I can use it on the go but I guess this isn't happening now. The phone was replaced so this isn't a problem. Number 2 was actually a decent laptop, it was thin and had a dual core i5 with 8GB of RAM and a GTX 750M as far as I know. I'm a bit sad that this one doesn't work anymore. And I don't know much about #1 except that it was the one of my brother's girlfriend and she wanted to replace it soon. We got extreamly unlucky but since only #1 was used as a primary device and no important data was lost as far as I know, it could have been worse. At least we have lots of spare hard drives if any of those work. I will do my best and try to find the problem. Maybe some of those laptops can be repaired. I just wanted to share this story. What can you learn? Electronic devices can break at any time so at least keep backups of your important data. Edit: The house that killed laptop 1 and 2 is rather old and I don't know much about it. But the house that killed the phone and laptop 3 and 4 is rather new and there is nothing wrong with the electricity. Laptop 3 didn't turn on without it being connected to a wall outlet. So I'm pretty sure it was already broken before I plugged it in. And laptop 4 was lying around for a long time and got moved very often. It probably died before it was plugged in as well. So basically the house didn't kill laptop 3 and 4. The phone was pretty new, maybe there was already a problem with it when it arrived. I don't know. So please stop calling my house the problem, it is nothing special that someone plugs in a phone here and handling multiple PCs, TVs and Ovens at the same time is no problem. And this house is well grounded. As I said I can't give much information about the house that killed laptop 1 and 2 but many people live in this house and this never happened before to my brother. Maybe the grounding was the problem here but I don't know. Now my brother and his girlfriend are both using desktop PCs and they had no problem with the power delivery. Update: Laptop 3 started working again for no reason. Don't ask any questions. laptop 2 works again as well. The HDD was compleatly dead and after we pulled out the borken drive we plugged the laptop back in and it works again. I don't know why it wasn't able to turn on and boot into the bios but there is probably more I don't know and to be honest I'm glad that the laptop works again. No further investigation needed. I'll check laptop 1 if it can be fixed as well. But the sad story is that there is probably no hope for laptop 4.
  13. Hi everyone Let me tell you a story about the dream I had last night. I know this is very important to the community so pay close attention! Everything started with me in the LMG headquarters sitting across Linus in his office being interviewed for a job. The issue was that I didn't know what I applied for exactly, so I tried to dodge the specific questions in a hope to match what Linus was looking for. The most awkward part is that I was being filmed in the meanwhile in a three part video on Youtube while no one had a clue what was actually going on in my head. Somehow I got the job to my biggest surprise but still had no idea what to do so I decided to make myself usefull. I knew LTX was about to start so I began decorating the office for the after party but everyone was looking at me like "What the hell are you doing?" but I didn't care. The only person that could relate to me was Colton, he even told me that he knew what it felt like when you start at LMG like you have no idea what to do so you try to make yourself usefull (sorry @CPotter, this probably isn't true but this is my story ). After everyone packed their stuff and moved on to the LTX location, I grabbed some flyers I made myself and adressed people in the streets that looked like they could be interested in technology and tried to make them curious so they would take a look and eventually be part of the LTT community. After a few hours of talking sense to people I joined the event where I expected it to be brightly illuminated with stands all over the place (which it should be) but I entered a huge dark space with loud techno music and lazerbeams shining through the smoke (maybe an idea for future LTX's). I don't remember much after that but what I want you to take out of this is not much actually, like it or don't. Either way, thanks for your attention!
  14. i'm dutch so excuse me for my bad english. okay so, this story is really stupid. i was 10 years old and just got a new pc. it had an amd a10 7870k and an rx 460. 5 months after i got it i decided to clean my graphics card when my mom was away, since my mom wouldn't allow me to get into my pc case, she was afraid that i would break something. i should've listened to her, because i knew nothing about computers and i wasn't very careful. anyways, i opened up my pc case. i tried pulling the graphics card out without unscrewing the screw but did notice the screw about 10 seconds later and i unscrewed it, removed the graphics card from the pc and voila. at this point, nothing seemed damaged, but just wait. as i said, i knew nothing about computers like most fucking 10 year olds. i unscrewed the screw on the graphics card, removed the heatsink with the fans (which went smoothly), i set aside the heatsink and the fans and i got the genius idea to wash my graphics card's pcb with water and soap.. and so i did. the pcb was wet and there was soap everywhere. i tried drying off the pcb with a hairdryer, but it didn't quite work because there still was a shitload of water on it. so i put back the heatsink without cleaning it and applying thermal paste, i screwed on all the screws on the gpu accept for one because i lost it, i plugged the card in without screwing the gpu slot screw in.. and... the system did boot, for 3 seconds. the fans on the gpu start spinning like crazy, and a few moments later the system died. the pins on the gpu were still dripping with water when i put it in, so that's probably why the whole system died. i do still wonder how it managed to still boot for 3 seconds though. moral of the story, don't let your 10 year old mess around with computer hardware. i do not look forward to getting roasted in the comments though.
  15. Disclaimer: I shared this story on Reddit, and wanted to share it with you guys as well. Seeing as we can all learn from my mistake. Anything red means it was for the original community (PCMR) I posted it on. Buckle in, this is a long one. Okay, so if you've ever gotten a new SSD, reinstalled Windows, or have a dual boot, you've most likely seen the Windows Boot Manager. You know, the one that looks like this. Most people want to get rid of it, but this thing literally saved me days of reinstalling everything. This story starts like most on this sub, with somebody being an idiot. That idiot was me. I love Vista. The part of my life I really spent interest in computers was during the Vista era, and my parents had a Vista laptop. I love the Aero glass UI, and wanted it on Windows 10. Now I know, there's Win8AeroGlass, but I couldn't stand the watermark. No free advertising on my PCs (apart from the countless number of stickers on my MacBook, obviously). I'm pretty deep into the customization world, and have theme patchers. I found a .msstyles file for Aero glass and I tried it out. That's when it all broke down. My PC started freaking out, then went to a black screen. Mouse still worked, but no Ctrl-Alt-Del, or anything like that. Crap. I quickly went to my phone to Google the solution, and there was! Go into the Windows Recovery Environment > Troubleshooting > Advanced Options > Command Prompt and delete the troublesome themes and replace them with the working Windows 10 one. Perfect! All I need to do is grab my USB, and... crap! My flash drive was currently used by some footage. And the footage was only on that flash drive. Plus, I couldn't even install Windows 10 onto it anyway because my brother wasn't letting me use my laptop MacBook was currently occupied. I decided to take a chance and hit my reset button to see if restarting would fix it. Long story short: It didn't. I restarted because now the only thing that appeared was the black screen. No login or anything. Great. But that's when I saw it. On the boot manager. Change defaults or other options. I clicked it, and hooray! I got to command prompt, and deleted the files, booted into safe mode to change the theme back, and... you've gotta be kidding me! Every attempt to login booted me back to the login screen. Great. I went back to command prompt, and it turns out that I didn't delete the resource folder. I did, booted to safe mode, and... I've never been so happy to see that copy of Castle Crashers on my desktop. I changed the theme, booted into normal Windows, and here I am, 15 minutes later. I'm not kidding, the first thing I did when it booted (other than fixing a couple things) was go to Reddit to tell this story. TD;LR: If you use Windows, use System Restore/Make backups and prepare for the worst.
  16. I am looking for a co-op story-based RPG Adventure to play with my boyfriend, we live together so that makes LAN an option. I wouldn't want an MMO, I want something where we get to play out the story. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated! Maybe a game with magic would be fun, but we wouldn't mind a si-fi game either! Edit: Looking for a 3rd or 1st person adventure game, not based on puzzles. We love Portal 2 but we are more looking for an open-world adventure to experience. Thank you so much for the responses though!
  17. Spider horror story Once upon a time there was an adorable petit boy by the name of Leo. Leo was sleeping. Leo was merely 10 years old. The boy was afraid of spiders and every insect in the world. The next day the boy woke up to find a dead spider on his floor. The boy was shocked and yelled. His mom came into his room and took the spider and flushed it out the toilet. The boy had a normal day at school, when he got home, he did all the usual stuff, homework, he also ate a good sandwich, he played video games. Then the boy went to bed and fell asleep instantly. Suddenly at the middle of the night the boy woke up and he heard lots of weird noises. It was like someone was scraping the boy’s walls and ceiling. Leo could not sleep, so he went to the kitchen to get some milk. When Leo got back to his room, the noises were louder and louder. . The boy went to bed, and suddenly he felt something in his nose, ears and in his mouth. The boy got scared and ran into the bathroom to check. The boy was shocked. His mouth nose and ears were full of spiders. The boy later day died. Ok so i got this task to write a horror story of something. I chose something imaginatiful and unusual. English is not my main language, so plz do not judge me. Tell me your honest review of the sotry. Thank you.
  18. Ever since the gtx460 I've found my self selling sooner to fund the next one. Sell the 460 and get the 560ti 560ti - to 660 (didn't keep that one long) 660-760 760- 970 970 - 1070 (that hurt as it cost me 100 more than the other replacements) (always MSI for some reason) So I got a 1070 for £350 (£200 in actual outlay) about 18mnths ago The rtx 2070... The 2nd hand value of a 1070 and the new cost of a 2070(AIB not founder) I can see that as 300+ actual outlay. I've had such a good run of what I think has been very cost effective performance enjoyment. I think its over. Nvidia is a fkn nightmare
  19. I've got a story to tell, so be prepared because it might be long. A few months ago I started to put together a new build. I had built my previous computer with barely any knowledge and although I love it, it could have been better. Since then it has been over half a decade, I have learnt a huge amount about computer parts and have helped at least 2 dozen people build computer over the years, never had a problem. So now that it was time to build myself a new computer I wanted to go the whole 9 yards, rgb, tempered glass, you name it. I ordered all the parts and put the computer together and it was magnificent. I installed Windows on my new M.2 and was running some benchmarks. Then the crashes started. They were random and I couldn't see any obvious problems. I updated the bios, and there was no difference, then I tried getting into the bios and it would just skip the bios screen and go directly into windows, then it happened. Error code 0d. The computer no longer booted and only showed an active black screen. I tried everything, an nothing would work, eventually I decided the motherboard was broken and got it RMAed. They repaired it, sent it back and would you guess it it still didn't work. I RMAed it again, and this time they sent me a new one but it still didn't work. I RMAed a third time and this time brought the new mobo to a computer store and had them diagnose it in case I was unknowingly bricking boards. They found an extra standoff on the case, said it was shorting the board and said that was it. I rebuilt the computer, and it worked, it wasn't stable but it worked. And then it got less and less stable and then like all the mobos before me, error code 0d. So I bring the computer back into the store, here is where it gets fun. The repair guy works on the computer for a week and half non stop. He tried switching all the components out and nothing would get rid of the error, the computer seems to be limiting itself out to 100W on the CPU. Again no matter what component of combination of components the guy changes the code still happens. So the repair guy builds a completely new computer using the same parts I have. It works. He then tries to switch one of the components from the new working build with one of mine, and it gets the error. So he puts back the new part and tries switching a different part, same problem. No matter what component he takes from my build to add to the new build it gets the same error. So the build is haunted. It's like a virus has infected the whole thing, any part instantly corrupts a build. I've been instructed to RMA every part and try again. Just my luck. Tell me your nightmare build stories, and we can laugh at our misery. Sorry for the long post.
  20. So i had this funny/weird dream last night and i thought you guys might be entertained by it so here it goes so there was some kind of apocalypse, i presume a disease or something, so i was in a house in what i presume was California with most of my family, but they all had left to go scavenging and stuff except me and my cousin Kevin. So than a cult that we had never heard of comes into are house and kidnaps us, they bring us to this weird cult called the sleeping dogs where they kidnap people and treat them like dogs, one of the rules is unless you are a camp leader you have to wear an eye-patch over one of your eyes, and only camp leaders can take there eye-patch off, they also don't allow you to talk, the camp was split between camp A and camp B, I went along with the cult and was a really good cult member because i knew how to scavenge because i watched many movies and read many books about post-apocalypse, they sent me to camp a and my cousin Kevin to camp b, of corse we could not communicate between camps, eventually after a few scavenging missions they made me the leader of my camp and took my eye-patch of, the light hurt my eye so much i could barely see, and i convinced them to combine the camps because i really wanted to see my cousin Kevin, but when they finally combine the camps i learn that my cousin Kevin has escaped, so i wait until we are about to do are doggy yoga and then run away (BTW if you didn't catch on they literally treat us like dogs) the first time i run away they catch me, then next day at yoga i try to run away again, they catch me, the day after that at yoga though i manage to escape, meet this guy who i kinda know named Getz running around, i would have made friends with him but i was running away, so i run into a YMCA and then they cant find me, so when i find out the cost is clear i start searching the ymca for food, when i was younger i was at the YMCA all the time so i knew my way around better than most, i go into this supply room that barely anyone knows exists and there is very little food left in there, like two boxes of gram-crackers, there is a little girl and her older sister in there, i let them have the boxes although i am so hungry, i am so hungry in fact i pass out while standing in the dream then i wake up IRL and thats where the dream ends
  21. So this just happened like 15 minutes ago, and felt like talking about it. It's not some crazy story, but it was a very strange experience. I was just coming back from walking my friend home. It was 12:30am (ish), but nothing unusual, I always walk around at night. There's always times where you talk to random people at grocery stores and stuff, so I'm used to that. I'm a 23 year old dude, so I don't feel awkward talking to randoms anymore.. But this time was really weird, just a gut feeling.. Here's what happened I was walking back, and my place is on a huge main road in town. Coming home it's a pretty steep downhill, and than a straight stretch about 10 minutes before you hit my place. So when you're coming down, you can see everything in front of you loooong before you pass it. This hill takes about 5 minutes to get down, there was a red truck just sitting there in the dark, looking parked. So up until I passed it (which was 7-8 minutes after first seeing it way ahead as I walked down the hill), it just sat there looking normal. But as soon as I was 15 feet in front of if, I heard it attempt to rev up about three times as if it was "failing" or something. Than it started, and drove up passed me. It pulled over another 30 feet or so in front of me as I was walking, and this guy comes out really quickly. He was about 40, really tall and skinny. He stepped out, and went to the back of the truck reaching inside grabbing a gas tank. He looked at me and said with a big smile "hey wanna help me push the truck to the gas station?". I was just like "Uh, I don't know, I probably could". The gas station is about 1 block up from my place on this same main road, so wasn't a shady area. The road has 5 lanes, and is the main road that goes through the entire town. Anyways.. Than he said "Haha I was just kidding, I have gas right here". During this interaction I slowed down a bit, but I was still walking. Than he just said "So what're you up to tonight..?" in a different tone of voice. Kind of neutral. Since he just kinda made a joke about pushing the truck and laughing about it, was a really abrupt change in tone. I just told him I was on my way home, he said "Oh ic, I was too.. well trying to get there". At this point I had stopped while I was talking to him, and he kind of went off about the weather. And as I continued slowly starting to move on ahead on my walk, he'd continue with saying other things as if trying to keep me there with my attention. But I just nodded along and eventually was just like "well, have a good night!" and continued on home. He drove passed me a moment later and waved as he went by. I just walked the last 3 minutes home and came inside. So yea, that was it. A brief interaction with a random person. He didn't seem threatening or aggressive. Nothing about this man's physical appearance made me think "Oh man, I gotta get out of here". Was was weird (and I don't know if this make sense) - But what he looked like and sounded like didn't feel like an accurate representation of the man that was inside that brain. And it just felt like he was looking at me like I was lesser than him. Not the way he talked, just how talking to him made me feel inside.. That's everything, just a gut feeling based on nothing other than a random conversation. It's strange though because I've never felt this way about anyone before in my entire life. I wasn't in a paranoid or bad mood. Wasn't drunk, high, wasn't anything unusual.. Other than feeling the way I did. So idk, think I'm crazy? Has anyone ever had an experience like this?
  22. Hey guys i wrote a short spec fiction story and was hoping i could have some feedback. If you just want to read then do that. I really want to share this asi am pretty proud of it *i know the paragraphs and whatnot were lost in the copy-paste from google docs... Sorry Goodbye By Jack Vann-Lammonby Rosalie lay there, staring up at the ceiling. Lights danced across the smooth white surface, telling tales from long ago. Lions ran through savannahs and white horses galloped through fields of green and yellow. She could hear her parents rushing around, picking up her things and putting them into white, plastic boxes, occasionally pausing to argue about something, then hurrying to to pack again, as if to make up for the time they just lost. Then the lights turned off. Rosalie was picked up and carried through the house, towards the door and out into the vast expanse of what once was New York. Buildings, mere skeletons of what they had once been, casting shadows over the endless rubble and destruction, as if glaring down at what once was a happy place, sadly reminiscing. A car pulled up. It's immaculate white finish a stark contrast to it’s surroundings. Rosalie felt herself slide into the cool black leather. Her mother and father slipped in beside her, the doors shut themselves and the car began to move. The long, thin Windows allowed the family a cinematic view of the streets of the once-New York City. The road utterly useless, bar a small strip of fresh tarmac, on which they drove. The side window displayed walls of corruption; political propaganda and extremist posters. Graffiti lined the sidewalk and defaced the governmental figures adorning the walls. The car slowed as it maneuvered through the tight streets. Not a thing moved around them. There was a breeze, but no trees to slowly sway in it. Though it was a warm summer morning, no people peered out of windows to catch the sun’s rays. The streets were littered, yet no dog strayed to find a meal. Slowly the broken cityscape faded and and they approached a vast emptiness in amongst the chaos and destruction. In the centre of this concrete field sat a building composed of a bright white alloy and reflective, black glass. It sat there, a single daisy in a meadow of grass; alone. The building was round and, in the centre, stood a white pinnacle, it's tall frame casting a shadow over them. Rosalie was taken from the cool grasp of the leather and into her mother's arms. The two of them moved down the walkway that led to the building, her father beside them. As they approached the building, glass doors hissed open. They stepped in. Rosalie thought it smelled like a hospital, the reek of disinfectant stinging her throat and making her gag. The only thing in the room was an elevator. It's glass doors parted, inviting the new arrivals in. The doors shut and the elevator began to move. When they stopped and the elevator opened it's doors, it became apparent that they were on a roof, with the pinnacle of white towering over them. A voice from an unknown source spoke to them, “Walk towards the entrance and await further instruction”. Two panels slid aside from the seemingly solid white surface and they stepped in. The authoritarian female voice addressed the family once more, “Please proceed down the hallway then turn left into room ten”. They walked slowly down the hall, carefully putting one foot after the other, not wanting to disturb the absolute perfection and silence. They turned left into room ten. There were doors to other numbers going down the hallway, slowly trailing out of sight around the curve of the structure. Once they would have been filled with people, now they were empty. The room was simple. It was a stark contrast to everything else. It had a brighter, more colourful theme, with three small beds: one blue, one red and one orange. The walls and floor remained crystal clean white. On the far wall was a solitary window, looking out. Three seats faced the window. “Your belongings have been placed in your room. Please be seated”. They sat and did as they were told. A low rumble could be heard. The rumble became an ear-piercing scream and the ship pushed itself from the grasps of Earth’s gravity. Rosalie shut her eyes tight and plugged her ears with her fingers, wanting to shut out the assault on her senses. Rosalie felt the ship shudder as a they pushed through the atmosphere. Then all was quiet. Rosalie felt weightless and free. She opened her eyes. She felt her mother's hand grasp her’s. Rosalie unbuckled herself and floated to the window. Peering out at Earth, a blue and green globe, now nothing but a memory. “Goodbye”, said Rosalie.
  23. So i've been searching the steam store for a good Co-op survival/apocalypse games with a good storyline. unfortunately i havent found any. The least good one is The Forest on Steam. but the devs are not yet finished the Storyline. suggest, anyone?
  24. So things started before this post and today, I tried to use it again... It turned on just fine, no hiccups at all. Used it for like 30-40 minutes until suddenly, I see sparks and smoke coming from my PC!!! I rushed to turn off the power supply and unplug it. After opening my case, there was still a bit of smoke, but not sure where from since the Phantom 530 is so well ventilated. After opening the other side panel, I see some burn marks! They wiped clean thankfully, but I see a small area on the motherboard that's scorched. It was right behind the top heat sink, not the CPU fan. After I remove the heat sink to check it out, I see some chips that are totally fried and the heat sink is burnt too. Interestingly, these heat sinks use thermal pads, not paste, thought it was interesting. Later I was able to use MemTest on another PC and the memories are fine, tough I'm a bit skeptical. The GTX 950 is also working. I haven't tested the CPU 'cuz I don't have thermal paste. But thankfully, so far it seems that only the motherboard died. I contacted ASRock about it. Here's the email. 25. I've just finished Fallout 4. As much as I've been amazed by some of the storytelling techniques used in this game I have to say that I'm quite disappointed in the "ending". First off let me start by what I did like. The main conflict of course is the dynamic between the 4 factions of the game, the Minutemen, the Brotherhood of Steel, the Railroad and The Institute. I quite like that the Synths in this game were made to be like a whole new race. Fallout had the supermutants, F2 had the Enclave, but ever since these the power dynamics weren't really all that interesting. But I have to say that when I played this game I thought the way they wrote the story was nothing short of genius. First off the Synths, and mainly the Institute are made out to be this big mysterious threat that want to destroy the Commonwealth. And then you find Nick Valentine who becomes your companion. You get to know him, you get to like him. You'll start to sympathize with him. Then you meet the railroad that want to help runaway syths. And because of your relationship with Nick you are inclined to be on their side. And then you meet the Brotherhood which want to destroy all synths because they believe that they are a threat. And this is where I start with my gripes. The game tries very hard, almost too hard to paint the Railroad the "good guys" and the Brotherhood "the bad guys". But the thing is, I think the Railroad are a bunch of lunatics. And I commend the game for giving me a choice in the matter. I very much sympathize with the Brotherhood and no matter how hard the game tried to convince me that "look how bad these guys are" I just grew more and more fond of the BoS. Okay, eradicating the Railroad might have been a bit too much, but whatever. But then the big twist comes around. You get into the institute and it turns out it's led by your son! Who is ironically called "Father", which is actually quite clever because people can put him into YT videos without giving away the twist. This was pretty amazing. The whole time you are looking for your son and fighting this big bad institute at the same time, and it turns out your son is now an old man and is the leader of the very group you were fighting. But it turns out he's a total fucking nutjob. I really don't understand what the point of creating "human-like synths" is. Other than having more human looking slaves. And the game totally fails to even try to convince the players that this is a good thing. I mean, the shitty, robot looking ones seem to be able to sweep the floors and stuff. If you're going to use them as a free labor force then what's the point of making them look like humans? This is just the hubris of science, men trying to play god for all the wrong reasons, and it really rubs me the wrong way. And while they are doing their pointless, merry little experiments in their little labs the rest of the world can suck it. So other than the personal connection I didn't really find any reason to side with the Institute. And then my disappointment begins. The mother son connection. Shaun is a right fucking c**t. He does not show any signs of affection, all his moves seem to be cold and calculated. Which is fair enough, at least it makes my decision easier. But after everything I've been through. After mowing down half the institute and ready to do the same with the other one, everything culminates in this one bedchamber, with a sicly old man on his deathbed. His life work crumbling all around him. This should've been an epic, moving conversation. But here the poor dialogue system shows it's teeth. I think I chose the most interesting dialogue choices and still it was utter shit. The most anticlimactic scene I've ever witnessed. And then I convinced him to give me a code, then I proceeded to shoot him in the head, then I went and blew up the whole thing. And at least the game went out with a bang, that was quite nice. And the outro was well written as well. All in all I still found it the best bethesda storyline so far, even though it had a pretty lackluster ending. There wasn't even a summary of player-actions and choices in the end which was doubly disappointing, and seems like this wasn't even an RPG, only an action game with some dialogue choices. But this is not a discussion on the gameplay and game systems, only the story. And these are my thoughts. I'm going to play through the game at least once more where I join the Institute and probably once more where I go more into the settlement building and Minuteman faction.
