Hello everybody, a friend of mine has an Asus gamer laptop (i7 + 1050Ti) which he bought a little over two years ago. The laptop's storage solution is a 256GB m.2 SATA SSD and a 1 TB 2.5" SSHD. Today he approached me with a problem that mid-game, his game crashed and his whole system locked up. Eventually he managed to close the game, only to realize that his entire Drive D was missing from Windows, and most of his apps weren't working. A reboot managed to fix the problem but his laptop is acting weird ever since, and now that he's paying more attention to the laptop, he can hear that the drive is making some weird noises when spinning. I assumed from the get-go that his SSHD might be failing. I had him download HD Sentinel to have a look at his drive condition and as the attached image shows, according to the app, that thing is barely clinging on to life. Obviously I immediately recommended him to start saving all his important files to pen-drive. Naturally, the laptop's warranty expired in November last year. What I don't understand is the number of starts / shutdowns of that SSHD. Apologies for the UI being in Hungarian but I believe you can get all the data regardless. The app shows that in 268 days of operation, that thing was powered on / off 65535 times which is insane and (if the data is correct) it could've caused such degradation. What could've caused this? Did a controller or something die? For comparison, my 5 years old WD HDD's start / stop count was 2828 in 889 days of operation and it still has 100% condition according to HD Sentinel. Did anybody see anything like this? Does this seem abnormal only to me? Do Seagate's SSHD's die this fast? Is maybe HD Sentinel's data wrong (never had issues with that app before though)? What I'm worried about is that if something's wrong with the laptop, then even if we get a new drive, it might kill it with time. Any ideas / experiences are much appreciated! Cheers, specialist

hard drive Which is the more reliable hard drive for safe storage?
-X- posted a topic in Storage Devices
I had a hard drive failure and I need to get a new one, decided to expand the storage while I'm at it and going from a 1TB (500gb was for games 500gb for storage) I'm looking to get a seperate 1TB for games/programs and a 2TB for storage. Due to a limited budget and specific needs the choice mostly comes down to 4 HDDs (1 for games/programs one for storage). The one for games/programs I don't need to be anything fast like an SSD or NVMe, the budget let's me choose between a 256gb SSD, 120gb NVMe or a 1TB HDD and anything under 1TB doesn't do it. The one for storage also due to budget limitations is mostly around 2TB HDDs and not high class professional storage models and an SSD/NVMe is far from the 2TB I need. The one for storage has to be as reliable as it can for the price. Currently the choice is between these: Games/programs HDD: Western Digital Blue 10EZEX 7200rpm 1TB vs Seagate Barracuda Pro ST1000LM049 7200rpm 1TB Storage: Western Digital Blue 20EZRZ 5400rpm 2TB vs Seagate SkyHawk ST2000VX015 (?rpm) 2TB I've always used Western Digital (Blue), I decided to research the difference between their Seagate equivalents in case they have advantages over WD's Blue and Green series and among the mixed reviews and experiences that vary from extremely good/bad experiences from both WD and Seagate the thing that is most common is that Seagate compared to WD is generally faster but at the cost of reliability. As I said there are good/bad and great/horrible stories for both brands, but the most frequent is that Seagate has faster but less reliable HDDs while WD has slower but more reliable HDDs. A bit of info that caught my attention is that Seagate HDDs aside from being less reliable in general, tend to fail suddenly and the chances of saving any files from them are quite low to none. I also read that WD has a different type of head for reading that doesn't physically touch the disk while the head in Seagates has physical contact, true or not the low reliability of Seagate is still a common comment everywhere ignoring the way the head reads the disk. So, which of this is more or less true? What would you suggest between these and maybe another choice (the choice between brands is low where I live, I think there are some Toshiba HDDs though I haven't looked them up and I'm not sure how available are any other brands for mechanical drives). The WD Blue 2TB 20EZRZ as I know is the old WD Green drive which was for storage purpose and I currently have that one, though I've got it a bit more than a year ago. The HDD for games/programs would probably be fine as either the WD Blue or Seagate Barracuda Pro (though the small speed difference isn't that important, a more reliable drive would be just a bit nicer), but the HDD for storage absolutely has to be the most reliable for that price range, the speed can be as slow as it needs like the usual 5400rpm but the files have to be as safe as possible (that's why the info that Seagate isn't as reliable and that the files can't be saved as easily or at all in case of a failure and the general bad reputation they have on reliability is pushing me away from buying Seagate for storage, but I'd like to hear thoughts about this) Thank you -
Hello, I recently got both a high capacity (8TB) HDD and a 500GB SSD that I would like to use as a cache. I remember Linus talking about some software that is used to achieve that but I always forget the name so I wanted to ask the community if someone remembers which one Linus said is good for that or if someone maybe has some other good programs or ways to do that. Additionally, I wanted to ask if 500GB is too much for 8TP? If so, can I use half of the SSD as cache and the other half as normal storage? Maybe i should add that the HDD will mostly be used for games and game related programs (launchers, mod tools and so on). Thanks to anyone that may take their time to answer me.

Hey everyone, I've been facing a problem with my laptop where my HDD(Firecuda) randomly disappears from the face of the earth and reappears after a reboot just to disappear again. I've followed all of steps I could find on Google like check the power connection (I just reseated the HDD cause Laptop), tried to do a defrag but the HDD, it just disappears after a while and defrag just stops. Did a chkdsk but it said nothing is wrong. Changing the drive letter didn't work at all. I even formatted the HDD, heck even reinstalled windows just to check if it's windows fault but to no avail. Can anyone help me with this?

Hi All, I upgraded my B460m DS3H mobo BIOS from version F3 to F5. When I did so my PC would not boot after the BIOS update initialized. It was frozen on the Gigabyte Boot screen. I figured my boot order was messed up so I unplugged my hard drive (2.5 inch Firecuda 2TB SSHD "ST2000LX001"). My PC then booted properly on my SSD and the BIOS updated. Now the issue is that my PC cannot recognize my hard drive. If I try starting the PC while the hard drive is plugged in it will stay frozen on the Gigabyte Boot screen like before. If I load into my bios and then plug the drive via SATA it will not be detected. If I load into Windows and then plug the drive in via SATA it will still not be detected. If I try to access the BIOS straight from Windows while the hard drive is plugged in it freezes in a similar manner again. I have plugged the hard drive into an external case and have plugged it into my PC and my laptop via USB. They both see it as Disk 1 but it's messed up. It says "Disk 1, Unknown, Not Initialized" and the partition space is blank, nothing is there. I.e. it doesn't say "unallocated" I don't know what to do at this point. I think my drive is dead and I screwed myself by updating the BIOS. Can anyone tell me any troubleshooting options I can try? I have looked around the internet and nothing is working. Thanks for any help in advance.

So I have an external SSHD from Seagate (my buddy had it lying around and didn't use it). I used it on Windows 7 just fine, upgraded about a month ago to Win 10 and it worked fine too. Now suddenly it isn't recognised anymore, not even in disk drive. The SSHD is working, it vibrates and when i plug it into the USB 3.0 port, it is for a short time recognised as memory and then the 'windows doesn't recognise this USB' message pops up. Suggestions?

Hi I would like to ask why does it do this? Is it dead? All of Steam GONE! :(

Hey Guys, Title in itself might seem a little stupid but seems as linustech is my treasure trove for knowledge, i haven't really been able to find anything that's been clearly definitive with regards to maintenance of a solid state hybrid drive. I'm planing on casing a 1TB seagate firecuda (128mb cache/8GB ssd) as an external drive. Need a pretty obvious and simple question answered: Does this or any other sshd fall under the guidelines for defragmentation or are sshds optimised by way of trim? I'm kind of trying to power through replacing all of my gear considering I got out of a relationship a few months ago and all the old gear is just giving me bad memories. I use my laptop rebuild as a healing platform. I'm rebuilding my laptop and putting together a new external drive to work through my way of healing. I'm mildly autistic with a meticulous specialty for picking specific parts when i build a computer. So if the above drive fits the box and doesn't need trim, it's gunna sit in my enclosure. Help a nerd out. Many thanks, Ryan.

Hello! My computer is very quiet... appart from my harddrive which sounds like a fucking jet. It has been noisy since I bought it. It's really good on every other aspect apart from the noise... Does anyone have any tips for a replacement? I really want to have a whisper quiet PC and it's really bugging me. Requirements: 2TB Really quiet/silent Preferably under 100$ Relatively fast (in the range of peaking at 180MB/sec) I'm really thankful for any response, have a good day!

I am trying to setup ssh on my ubuntu machine so that only specific ip addresses can connect to it. I am using ListenAddress x.x.x.x in the config file for sshd but every time i go to start it it gives me this error: error: Bind to port 22 on "insert my ip" failed: Cannot assign requested address. fatal: cannot bind any address. ssh.service: Main process exited, code=exited, startus-255/n/a Failed to start OpenBSD Secure Shell server.

ssd SSD will be $$D ( significantly pricey) soon! SSHD's market?
Guest posted a topic in Storage Devices
The price of SSD will get higher because of the shortage of NAND gate. Actually, who are the prime makers of these NAND gates? As SSD's market will crunch a little bit instead of having a upward graphical chart, is it possible that SSHD could have it's chance? Such as Seagate's Firecuda. Though not on the same level but closer to the performance. -
Hello Forum, I have created a problem for myself. I'm hoping you can assist me in resolving it without the need to reinstall Windows 7 Professional. My boot drive is a 500GB Samsung SSHD in GPT format which is recommended for SSHD. I boot on an ASUS Z170-A LGA1151 Motherboard. I was recently playing around with VeraCrypt, a branch off of Truecrypt software, when I must have tried to encrypt the whole drive where the OS resides instead of encrypting a drive I had plugged in via USB. Not just the OS partition, but the whole drive. The program encountered an error stating that the drive was in use or active or something and did not allow me to continue. I then realized I had selected the wrong process and proceeded with the correct encryption method. Long story short, I ran the computer without rebooting for over a week when suddenly I had issues transferring files to portable medium. As soon as I restart my PC, I lost the ability to boot. The motherboard will post, attempt to boot the drive, then fail to ASUS UEFI without any error messages. None. Just a white line before UEFI. I've since installed and boot other OS partitions to my ASUS without issues so I do not believe my motherboard is the problem. I have taken the affected drive and installed in different computers and it will also not boot there. The storage partition is completely intact. I can browse every file on the disk when connected to a different PC but there is a 1MB partition before my OS partition that I believe is corrupted. I've attempted Windows startup repair from a CD and that didn't work. I've run fdisk on the drive. I believe I have corrupted the boot partition, but I'm only firmiliar with MBR repair, I have no experience rebuilding GPT /EFI information. I did not yet have a backup of this drive. I've created an image of this drive in case I screw something up. Can someone point me in the right direction on how to manually rebuild the boot partition for a GPT drive? I appreciate the help,

I noticed that SSHD "Hybrid" drives claim to have speeds only slightly slower than an SSD while having the capacity of an HDD. I am aware that an SSHD is simply a HDD with a small flash memory portion, and I noticed that they are usually only 8GB. I was wondering how it is able to boost speeds with such a small amount of storage. Is there some sort of thing I'm missing or does it really only store 8GB worth of quickly accessible data?

Hey good folks of LTT forum. I just uppgraded my desktop for several of reasons. I used to have: FX 8350 GTX 1060, AMD radeon 270X Samsung SSD 840 250GB FireCuda SSHD 1TB HyperX 8GB x2 RAM I keept the drives after I uppgraded but I formated the C drive and did a clean WIN 10 PRO install on the Samsung drive. but the new parts are: Ryzen 1700, GTX 1060 + GTX 760 Corsair Vengeance 3200 MHz 8GB x2 I run the RAM at 2666 MHz or something around there, I tried to run it at 3200 but it failed no suprise there, but I manage to make it work at 2933 or something like that, and it worked fine until I started playing BF1, every time i minimized the game the RAM skyrocketed and the PC got unusable even if I manage to shutdown the game and had to restart, after I turned it down a little more. Also it the system crashed once and that's the main reason why I turned down the MHz. the point is, the system works pretty good, my average FPS are much much better even with my crappy 3GB 1060 card. rendering times are super fast compared to the old system, but there is one issue that I still have. and that is random "freezing" or "stuttering" it feels most noticeable when browsing the web as I can see the cursor not moving at all, all sound still plays but all video stops. I was thinking it could have been the GPU, but it seems to not matter witch card I use. So I was wondering, could it be my SSD? it is very old, but barely used before the last 2 years. and the Samsung software say "Drive condition: GOOD" so I assumed it was in good condition before I bought the parts so I did not want to make the additional cost of buying a new SSD M.2 I am now wondering if that was a mistake not to do. So what do you guys think? is it possible that my SSD is not as GOOD as the software tells me? or do you thing something else are causing this issue?

I'm spec'ing out a new computer for work for one our 3D modelers and I'm wondering on what the opinion is on using a hybrid drive vs the traditional SSD+HDD setup. For anyone that's interested; Our budget here is tight, so I'm trying to make the most bang for the buck, I've started with this build: https://pcpartpicker.com/guide/34hPxr/great-gaming-build as my base, and am modifying it from there. The goal is to try to keep it under $1,100.00 USD. Our modeler works in Maya and photoshop a lot, but his current system (I5-4570 @ 3.2GHz, 16GB DDR3, Gigabyte Z87X-D3H, GTX750Ti, 250GB SSD + 1TB HDD) is getting pretty slow, and we can't salvage any parts from it as it's being repurposed.

Is intel optane even better than an sshd? It seems like intel optane is just some glorified sshd that is only exclusive to kaby lake cpus.

I have a toshiba 5tb which is extremely loud. I am planning to just store files on it rather than games as the noise is now too annoying. I want a quiet drive and came across a Db post for hard drives. The segeate 2tb SSHD was not the quietest but was reccomended for its cache feature for loading games to near ssd performace. Is this true? and is it worth it? Other than that it also states the WD Red is the quietest drive. Is that also true? and would it be good for storing games? I also have a 250gb almost full ssd for boot so thats not an issue. Thanks

Hey, I am in dire need of some help. I just upgraded my computer from a FX 8350 to a Ryzen 7 1700. And performance wise I am very happy, it finally a smooth gaming experience instead of a rollercoaster one, stable frames instead of a god median but horrible switch between low and high FPS witch I find very frustrating. and I haven't even updated the bios or anything like that yet, so exited to see how it works after I've done that. HOWEVER, the issue I have is that my secondary hard drive is a no show after I upgraded, and I suspect why but don't know how to fix it without losing my data. I had to upgrade to windows 10 so I bought a Win 10 PRO OEM OS, it all worked and legit for just 10 bucks. However, again. I had this super weird issues all the time I had WIN 7 that I could not right click on files in file explorer then file explorer would crash and some times give me an error message saying something about RPC. So I decides to just format the whole C drive and put the little of documents and pictures and stuff that's important as a back up to my F: drive before I formatted it and installed WIN 10. How ever, I can no longer see my old hardrive, and I suspect the reason are simply because I formatted and did a clean install on my C: drive and not upgrade and "keep files" I only wanted to keep the F: drive files anyway. I did not think this probably trough and I hope some one here might be able to save me from my stupidity. ohh yeah, the drive do off course show up in the device manager, but that does not help me much. Best regards - Pål-Marius S. Hansen

I'm running a dual OS on my first PC build. Initially bought only an SSHD (Seagate ST1000DX001), installed Ubuntu 16.04 on it. Recently upgraded to a 256 GB SSD and put Windows 10 on it. Now the issue is that my Linux OS can see the SSD, but the Windows OS can't see the SSHD. What should I do?

I have recently been looking into buying a new hard drive for my laptop, and found myself wondering "There are so many different brands to choose from, what do I pick?" So, I ask you, the LinusTechTips community. What hard drive brand is the best? (specifically for laptops)
