With traditional PC gaming we are used to dialing in our graphics settings, and then experiencing a very dynamic frame-rate as the scene complexity changes. A different more complicated approach would be to have a target frame-rate and dynamically adjust the rendering quality of the next frame based on how much time the last frame took to render. The tech is actually part of Valve's Source 2 engine. However the SDK for that engine is still not out. Instead we are getting this tech because Valve has released it as a rendering plugin for the hugely popular unity game engine. Theoretically there is nothing to stop this from being used in non-VR games but that's not expected to be the primary use case. The idea is to use the highest possible image quality while staying above target framerate. So scene complexity and midrange GPUs are accomodated without downgrading high end guys. Don't expect this to make things like Star Citizen VR playable on a 750ti. But it will be beneficial to people who are howering just under the minimum spec of R9 290 or GTX 970. Unity developers will get the tech at no extra cost. The Unity game engine supports both the HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift. There is also an algorithm known as fixed foveated rendering which can be used to dial back the image quality starting from the edges of the HMDs 110 degree FOV in order to prioritize high quality rendering in the center of the displays. For this particular feature most devs will probably consider it safer to use only for outer edges of the FOV until eye-tracking in HMDs become commonplace. The HTC Vive and Oculus Rift are head tracking HMDs without eye tracking. However it's worth noting that people normally do not move their eyes to observe the edges of their FOV (although they physically can), people generally move their eyes in a quite limited range and use it in combination with head movements. I was talking to my friends about HL3 and I was surprised to hear the mixed feelings about it's release. I personanlly think it will come out in one way or another, but I wanted to hear everyone's opinions.

Khronos Group released a PDF version of a presentation, via the tweet of the EA presenter, supposedly scheduled for the 15th of this month. The above is the basic post, you can go to the source if you want but I'll include brief summaries of the topics covered by the six speakers for those who don't care to look through the lengthy PDF. The presentation starts off fairly tame, they just clarify what Vulkan is, how it came to be, what other projects contributed to it, etc. This part is led by somebody from EA. (all names in presentation) They hand it off to the next speaker from Valve. He details the benefits of Vulkan, as well as the extra work that these benefit will require on the developer side. He introduces how scheduling will work in Vulkan. And he finishes off with announcing that Valve's Intel/Linux driver will be open sourced, and that Source 2 supports the Vulkan Alpha as of this day (not known whether it means the 15th or now. There's also an empty slide titled "Demo" without anything on it, hopefully somebody will write about it when the presentation takes place. He then passes the torch to the next speaker from Oxide Games. He talks mostly about how CPU and GPU utilization is improved and then has a screenshot demonstrating these improvements by implementing the ideas into a mantle build. The first slide is marked inspirational video but again is empty. He mentions how CPU improvements are coming not from better single threaded performance but higher core count and says that because of this software must scale well in multi-core cpus. He finishes by detailing how the Vulkan API will fix lack of cpu usage in vs how current APIs handle it- rather than having no usage it'll assign other jobs to it-. The next speaker was from Unreal (Engine). He talked mainly about what the code will look like and what kinds of commands will be at your (a developers) disposal. The speaker that followed was from Unity and talked about Vulkan's shader library, SPIR-V, and general compiling. A different speaker from Valve comes on stage and talks about the different layers of the Vulkan API, with the first and last layers, the application and the drive, being required and the the inclusion of the middle layers being up to the developers.

Hello, Now that Source 2 has been announced, do you think we will start seeing [game here] 3? People have always made jokes about the number 3 and valve, but I've always wondered if they were planning on all the 3rd games to be on the source 2 engine. Do you think we will see HL2-Ep3/HL3, Portal 3, L4D3, etc.?

Valve's Gabe Newell has spoken of how he wants a more open world for developers. Talking with MCV during this year's GDC, Newell spoke of how Valve is allowing other companies to use its tech for free, something that might not have come to pass if other companies had their way: Sure, it doesn't mean we're all getting free Steam machines and Vive headsets with our copies of Half-Life 3 that we're all given gratis, but that's because we're not all developers.
