Summary Florida Govenor Ron DeSantis passed a new law banning people under the age of 14 from using social media with the reasoning that it is heavily addictive and the young people don't understand what they are getting into. This legislation, called HB 3, is the same legislation that is requiring age verification for sexually explicit websites. Quotes My thoughts I think all of this new legislation has the right heart and people under 14 100% should NOT be on social media. There are so many scammers and child predators that are just waiting for kids like these to fall for their schemes. That said, I think the age verification is a TERRIBLE idea. Not because verifying age is bad in order to get on these websites, but it 100% could get hacked. Summary Elon Musk tweeted a video of a flickering 'X' and then in Twitter's voice chat Spaces, confirmed that the iconic blue bird logo would be replaced by the X. This comes after musk acquired Twitter and renamed the company "X Corp", and is likely part of his desire to create a ubiquitous "everything app" for payments, social interactions, chats, etc. similar to China's WeeChat. The change could be enacted as early as tomorrow (Monday 24th of July), "if a good enough X logo is posted". Quotes My thoughts Another day another Musk's Twitter controversy? Apart from the part where nobody could read tweets without signing in, this will probably be the most visible change to Twitter. Some people will likely say that this, this is the final nail in the coffin and everyone will switch, but I honestly doubt it; the users have been through so much, and the mass exodus and immediate downfall never really came to be. I'd love to be wrong though (although ideally not to the benefit of Threads, but that's the most likely). We also need to wait and see if the madlad actually does it. He's made empty promises before, and taken u-turns on big changes like the sign-in-only viewing. But maybe we'll wake up tomorrow, and there will be a barrage of confused tweets about what the new 'X' app is and why it changed. So last night I just casually chatting with my colleague, and it gotten to a food topic and I randomly asking if he have a friend coming home from Italy so he can bring some Parmesan cheese. And just this early morning I opened my YouTube app and open "Food" bar on my home screen to increase my breakfast appetite (I'm having a bad breakfast menu today), and voila, 3rd video recommendation showing a very specific topic I talked last night, PARMESAN CHEESE. For some context, I'm not into the specific food type of content, and just casually watch food related content to increase my appetite. Most food related videos I watch is eastern hemisphere cooking, so cheese is out of option here. The last time I watch about cheese content is around 3 years ago (based on my YouTube history). I curious if this happened because google is somehow keylogging my GBoard app, because WhatsApp claim that their chats is "end to end encrypted". I'm using fairly up to date android with recent security patch. I'm not using side-loaded app in this phone, and not being rooted or having unlocked bootloader etc. Any of you having similar situation happened to you? Tell it down below! Here's some picture for some detail (most conversation is censored for privacy reason):

Summary There is a lot of information out about a law just proposed which is nominally meant to ban Tik Tok but does not name Tik Tok specifically. The Restrict Act would ban anyone from accessing a online service ran by a US adverssary. This law is so sweeping it even mentions things like "Post Quantum Cryptography" and "Synthetic Biology" Some readings of it could imply that acceing such a service via a VPN would be against this law. However, this act is not intended to go after Joe user trying to find dance or cat videos but is intended to stop such services from bypassing the Restrict act. That said the law does have some concerning provisions, applies far beyond social media and specifies things like games and forums, and does contain both civli and federal criminal penalties. Though it only applies to such things that have over 1 million users over the course of a year. The act specifies that the app would have to in the judgement of the President and certain cabinet secretaries be operated by or from and adversary of the United states and have been: Used for sabotage, "catastrophic effects on the security or resilience of the critical infrastructure or digital economy of the United States" (hacking), " interfering in, or altering the result or reported result of a Federal election" , "coercive or criminal activities by a foreign adversary that are designed to undermine democratic processes", "otherwise poses an undue or unacceptable risk to the national security of the United States or the safety of United States persons" . Note this law has bipartisan support. Quotes Part of the text of the Bill Per newsweek. My thoughts The first thing to note is that this is not the same law as was discussed in this thread. This thread discussed a state law in Utah, and similar more draconian state laws in other states and another fedearl proposal regarding age limits on social media no matter where it was located. Some of these proposals do not specify what counts as "social media" i.e. Obviously Twitter and Facebook...but what about say Discord or the chat functions built into online games? This law is about outright total banning of large online services from outside the US and from countires that are deemed to be adverssaries by the government, specifically by the executive branch. Which in the US means it's only elected member, the president by way of the cabinet. Some are concerned with vesting so much power over our digital lives in one man in a law so broad and so sweeping it even covers QUOTE information and communications technology products and services integral to— (A) artificial intelligence and machine learning; (B) quantum key distribution; (C) quantum communications; (D) quantum computing; (E) post-quantum cryptography; (lol) (F) autonomous systems; (G) advanced robotics; (H) biotechnology; (I) synthetic biology; (LMAO) (J) computational biology; and (K) e-commerce technology and services, including any electronic techniques for accomplishing business transactions, online retail, internet-enabled logistics, internet-enabled payment technology, and online marketplaces. UNQUOTE (lols and LMAOS added by me) Are they trying to pass a law that would apply to Data from Star Trek or something? Is this a law for the United States or a Federation Star Fleet regulation? This law seeks to be so tech and future forward that it would apply when we have freaking warp drive. As ridiculous as it sounds this regulation which is about FAR more than Tik Tok looks like it will be enacted and singed into law as it has a lot of support. In short if you care about technology you will want to read this bill. This taken with laws seeking to restrict all social media by age will make web 3.0 a far different experience than web 2.0 has been. This Rossman video is so important it should be part of the original post. Sources https://www.dailydot.com/debug/restrict-act-tiktok-jail-time-vpn/ Does TikTok Ban Allow for 20 Year Prison Sentence? Summary Clubhouse, the hit audio chat room app, which recently hit a 1 bn dollar evaluation, has a new competitor in Social media major, Twitter. Until now, clubhouse was only available for iOS users. Now, Twitter is rolling out it's clubhouse competitor, spaces to Android users(Spaces beta for iOS already exists). It now seems that Twitter and clubhouse are entering the war for the best audio chats. Clubhouse has promised an android app, but the only way to access it right now is through an unofficial app, on GitHub. Quotes My thoughts Twitter is currently 'uncool' and Clubhouse is all about the coolness. However the tight integration with Twitter means that jumping and using spaces will be much easier. The android release, though still limited, amps up the heat in this segment. I expect to see Mr. Zuckerberg and co. to throw in the towel themselves. Currently, there is no stopping the clubhouse juggernaut. It can be the start of another social media empire(clubhouse), additional ammo for twitter, or maybe Facebook getting more control. Snapchat reveals next gen AR glasses Summary Snapchat, the social media company, has revealed their new AR glasses. Previously making the "spectacles", which only had cameras in the sides of the lenses, that had failed. I guess the company said "let's try again but better this time". Powered by Qualcomm's XR1 processor the glasses will be using a touch pad on the side for navigation. The glasses will also have 2 RGB cameras, a microphone and 4 speakers. The microphone other than recording video can also be used to identify songs and voice commands. so you don’t need to just use the touchpad for navigation in the menus. Unfortunately there is a big gotcha. The battery only lasts 30 minutes between charges but for being so slim and doing so much it only makes sense. The new AR glasses will also come with a charging case that holds up to 4 full charges. Of course, To use the new spectacles you need to Snapchat account in order to use them but it only makes sense because it is a Snapchat product. Quotes My thoughts I love the concept of AR glasses but they don’t really last long on a single charge right now so I don’t really think that it’s worth it for the early adopters price. I say either wait for upcoming apples AR glasses that have been rumored for a while now or wait a few generations. Also I wrote this article longer than I wanted it to but I do have to explain things clearly so you know Sources https://vrscout.com/news/snapchat-reveals-next-gen-ar-glasses/amp/?__twitter_impression=true https://www.cnet.com/google-amp/news/snapchat-new-real-ar-glasses-can-map-3d-effects-onto-the-world/ https://www.cnbc.com/2021/05/20/snap-announces-augmented-reality-spectacles-glasses.html

Hi! I had my Instagram account setup with 2FA using Microsoft Authenticator. I had to reset my phone and doing so lost Microsoft Authenticator backup when I logged back in. I don't have the backup codes and now I can't login into my account. Anyone knows how to solve this? Instagram only redirects me to 'Help Center' that doesn't have a solution and I can't find any other solution... Thanks

According to TechCrunch, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) head, John Kelly, suggested that some travelers may be required to provide their social media passwords prior to being granted entry into the United States. Shortly after the new Administration took office, President Trump issued a hotly contested Executive Order which prohibits entry to residents of seven Muslim majority-countries. The Executive Order is currently on hold as judges debate its legality. In a broad sense, I find Kelly's statement to be troubling. The sentiment seems to be that if you travel to the United States, you forfeit your privacy altogether. While the Obama Administration had a similar policy, providing the information was optional. Update: This appears to already be happening. A woman named Fadwa Alaoui, a Moroccan-born Canadian citizen of the Muslim faith, was denied entry after border agents saw pictures of mosques on her phone. She had been traveling with her cousin and the two were asked to hand over their phones. According to Alaoui, they were grilled for 45 minutes each before ultimately being turned away. Update: Whether or not this will affect the password forfeiture policy, I do not know.

This post was taken from Facebook group Asus ROG Users Philippines and posted in public by Jam captioned, that time when you Fight because you think you are better on the product, but your fighting with the Country Product manager, So gold. UPDATE: The story post has been taken down from the Asus ROG Users Philippines The story goes from Raymond that he bought the laptop from Benstore whereas the warranty is covered from Benstore itself. as not an authorized reseller from ASUS, but the game does not end there, the product's warranty is not accepted because of the company benstore is not a part of the authorized resellers, that causes frank, confusion, and embarrassment. In this statement from Joey , the product manager of Asus Philippines states that Asus has the right to refuse any warranty that was not an authorized re-seller from the company, however Raymond's statement and defends that benstore is also a part of an authorized re-seller . in short term you buy the product from an unknown or local store that the store bought from a e commerce website that means the one who bought the product from e commerce will be under the warranty on the buyer itself including invoice/recipt, Once the person sells that product to you and you purchased the product meaning it's under the person's warranty not the e commerce. Stating that The company that is not included on the list is an unauthorized re-seller of Asus ROG philippines . Full list of Resellers -> bit.ly/ROGStronghold Last is the 2 people involved did not know that they are talking to a product manager and later the comments became retarded until the proof was real that the 2 people involved were silent never replied to the event. source: http://www.phtrending.com/2017/07/never-go-full-retard-this-is-what.html http://www.phtrending.com/2017/07/never-go-full-retard-this-is-what.html From Asus ROG Philippines according to their statement from their facebook fan page. source:

https://ca.news.yahoo.com/giants-cooperate-removal-extremist-content-235718358--finance.html Individual sites/companies policing their own property is nothing really new. Now some are planning on buiding a database to identify "extremst" content. This is essentially the equivalent of a black list. Whether the content is terrorism, racism, political opposition, use of the name of a country that China doesn't want used, or unicorns, this is still a black list. Do you think this is a good or bad idea? Are these companies doing a public service or are they squashing the free expression of their consumers? If abused, does the existence of a database make all of these parties culpable in a conspiracy against any given group? For example, if LTT were tagged as "fake news" and blacklisted, and could prove this as defamation in a court of law, then they could pull all of these companies into it possibly just for the existence of the database. Another legal example is the RICO Act, where all they need to show is a conspiracy to act unlawfully. The RICO Act has been used against organized crime. I can see such a database, and those who provide the data, very easily becoming more or less a thought police. It also places government hooks/influence in an area that has attempted to remain relatively neutral from government intervention. Yes, I know some have standing deals with China to censor/block content, but up to now that's been limited to a given company.

At an event celebrating retiring Sen. Harry Reid, Clinton intimated that she wants to regulate fake news. The former U.S. Presidential candidate went on to say in a speech that there should be a bipartisan, legislative effort to tighten down on fake news, particularly on social media such as Facebook, calling it a "danger that needs to be addressed and addressed quickly." The bill, dubbed the Countering Disinformation and Propaganda Act, has already made its way through the Senate. This scares the hell out of me. Certainly, there is a plethora of fake news on the Internet, but a government body should not be in the business of deciding what qualifies as real or fake news. Doing so poses a direct threat to adversarial journalism. The Intercept, for example, has written several articles critical of various administrations, both Republican and Democratic. If they were to discuss leaked documents which revealed human rights violations, the government theoretically could classify such an outlet as a propaganda outfit and proceed to shut them down. Furthermore, using social media platforms to have these serious discussions could lead to unintended legal consequences. I don't like the way this is going. This is not the America I want to be in, nor is it the America that I grew up in.

This sounds like a joke but he makes this seem like it is a serious deal. Sources: Pewdiepie's video: Independent: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/people/pewdiepie-delete-youtube-channel-subscribers-disappear-a7455261.html At first, like me, this sounds like a very clickbait titled video, that pewdiepie is known to do. But as the video goes on, this sounds like this will actually happen. The summary of the video is another one of his rants about youtube. He goes on and talks about how the subscriber feed is hidden. He talks about how youtube is unsubscribing users form channels for no apparent reason. He uses an example how he was randomly unsubed from H3H3productions, "the only channel I actually watch", but he is still subscribed to these other random channels that he never watches. He gripes about how youtube changes the subcriber notifications and now, youtube doesn't push you to videos from channels that your subscribed to, but it tries to show you videos with clickbait titles. Then, he starts to talk about how his channels performance is right now terrible. He says "Some of these videos don't even have 2,000,000 views". I know that sounds stupid, but he's right. He used to be getting way more than that in the past. (Graph from SocialBlade) This is where he goes on his conspiracy theory. He says, he says a bunch of other insults to youtube calling youtube is like, He gives a somewhat valid reason for youtube trying to kill his channel that is youtube wants a more "mature" channel to be at the top. This is where he makes his statement that he "doesn't want to let youtube win" so therefore he will delete his channel when he hits 50 million subs. He says he will start a new channel and is not quitting youtube. Honestly, I don't know how this really helps. I mean, if he wants to believe that youtube wants to kill his channel, then hes making their job much easier. However, It doesn't solve that problems with the subscriber feed. He will still experience those issues in his new channel. Interestingly, at the end of the video is that he says that he will be "talking to youtube about these issues later today" (video was published on 12-2-16) and that he "will do an update when their is more info". That update has not come and with him nearing 50,000,000 subs (Currently at 49,605,480 as of 12/4/16) I wonder about whats to come. I want to hear your comments about this. I think that this is kind of an over reaction. I feel like he should give this some more time and not give up all the work he had put into his channel in the past to bad preformance and issues with youtube. I think he should give it more time. ------------------------ UPDATE He has a video now that is a little unrelated and does't give more info into why he's deleting his channel but goes on to the problem with youtube. In very short summary he noticed a change in the percentage of where his views are coming from. 1 moth ago 62% of his views per video, give or take a few, were coming from the suggested videos bar. Fast forward to today, suggested views only make up .2% of his views per video. However, his overall channel views make up still consists of 30% suggested views. Turns out that youtube is suggesting really outdated videos for his channel. The second point he makes is that youtube is suggesting very illict content in the suggested tab. If you want to hear more about this, watch the last 1/3 of the video as I have actually not read all of the terms for the forum and I don't know exactly what I can say... UPDATE 12/9/16 Pewdiepie did delete a channel, but not the 50 Million subscriber channel. Instead he deleted an old account. Read More here: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/2016/12/09/worlds-biggest-youtube-star-pewdiepie-threatens-delete-channel/ It looks like it was all a joke, like maybe a 50 million sub special. Here's the video of him "deleting" his channel:

Well, it was bound to happen sooner or later once the likes of Youtube, Twitter, Facebook, etc. started taking political sides in the day to day communications and goings on of the American peoples. Source: https://www.cnbc.com/2019/06/18/sen-hawley-bill-would-revoke-cda-section-230-for-large-tech-companies.html As it stands, these companies are considered service provides similar to telephone companies. Basically, I can go on the phone or Youtube or whatever, and talk shit about someone all I want, and the phone company or Youtube can't be held liable for my actions. There is a lot more to this. There is potentially a way for them to retain immunity, provided they can be audited (every 2 years) and confirmed to be actually remaining politically neutral (as they should be). My opinion follows:

A Mumbai-Based company has been breach with an unprotected database on an Amazon server. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-india-48347592 Instagram was quoted saying "We're looking into the issue to understand if the data described - including email and phone numbers - was from Instagram or from other sources. We're also inquiring with Chtrbox to understand where this data came from and how it became publicly available," My personal view on this is that not only are social media companies not living up to their end of the bargain with data security and preventing this sort of data scraping, but it seems that companies somehow get hold of this information are unconcerned at best as to how they handle sensitive data from high profile users of said services. What are your thoughts?

So recently a famous local school here has posted the following rules shown in the image to all their students. In short its: handover ur social media accounts or stay home. Obviously u would be pressured by ur parents to hand them over or deactivate them because no parent wants their child to be kept home just because of a social media account they have. And during the said parents meetings they would surely outline only the bad things of phones, computers, internet and social media to make all of them look straight out bad and there is zero good in them and most parents will surely take this on top of their heads and ensure their kid doesnt even get near a phone or computer. I have been to a couple of schools during my school times and I know how the so called computer staffs handle things in most places. They are just people with a basic IT certificate who only know how to install windows and how to press the next button during a software installation. So here when they say they will maintain a record of usernames and passwords, what they probably mean is one of these IT staffs will put them all in an excel sheet and keep them in the desktop of their account. God bless the security of the students accounts. Personally I think all of this is illegal because as I know accounts like these contain personal info. So unless u decide to give access to an external party they cannot forcefully take them unless they come with police with a court order. And all of this is really bullying the students. If i was still a kid and if i was studying in this school i would put all of my accounts visibility to friends only or only me and tell the school I dont have any accounts. However once the said parents meetings are done my parents like most of them here would have only one thing working in their brains: 'phones, internet and computers = 100% bad'. So i would probably be banned from using any device at home and the internet would be taken out as well. If u were put in this situation as a teenager, what would u do? And how would your parents react?

The committee has been performing a months-long investigation into the impact online information has on politics and democracy as a whole. Yesterday it published its preliminary report, and in it, among many other things, the committee recommends placing a levy on social media and tech companies to fund an effort in eliminating online misinformation. I feel the article explains it best: In addition to this recommendation, they also make several others, some of which are also highlighted in the article (linked below), including such things as: "A major increase in the maximum fine that can be levied by the Electoral Commission" "A ban on micro-targeted political advertising to lookalikes online" Forming a whole new regulatory category for tech companies The establishment of a “digital Atlantic Charter as a new mechanism to reassure users that their digital rights are guaranteed” The establishment of a global "Code of Ethics" for tech companies Subjecting tech companies to security and algorithmic auditing Requiring tech companies to disclose the targeting used for digital advertisements Establishing "clear legal liability for tech companies to act against harmful and illegal content on their platforms" There are others that I have not listed here, but I want to point out that last bullet point as particularly concerning. It sounds very reminiscent of the recent attempt by the EU to enact the Directive on Copyright in the Digital Single Market (i.e. that law that would hold sites liable for their users' content, thus undermining the open Internet). While this particular report is aimed at reducing misinformation and fake news rather than the sharing of copyrighted material, the negative impact would be the same. Holding site owners liable for user generated / posted content provides a number of barriers for smaller sites and companies that are unable to devote vast resources to monitoring every corner of their platform all the time. In addition to the above, the committee also goes on to call out Facebook directly several times, calling again on Mark Zuckerberg to appear as a witness in front of parliament, as well as accusing Facebook of not doing enough to stop the spread of hate against the Rohingya ethnic minority in Burma. The report even goes so far as to blame Facebook's actions for "undermining the UK’s international aid efforts in [Burma]." I strongly recommend reading the source article for more information, though it is quite long.
