  1. A few days ago I woke up and wanted to play some more diablo, when I hit the power button I just heard a pffffffffttt sound and saw in the back of the pc how a bunch of some got blown out(literally as if someone was blowing smoke out) I directly unplugged the power cable and then I started recording, I was looking if it will catch fire so I throw the case out or rescue my GPU inside but afterwards nothing happened, after that I didn't touch it, my first unprofessional guess was my PSU is broken and hopefully nothing else I ordered a new PSU and will try it in a few days, I also was using a power cord plug that protects from electricity spikes (don't know the English name). Update: My new PSU arrived, MSI PSU MPG A1000G PCIE5 1000W 80+ GOLD i was gonna change the PSU and all the cables that come from it but then got too lazy, left all cables inside just replaced the PSU first boot it kept restarting but after removing the ram and plugging it back it works fine now. the old PSU had some oily liquid leaking out of it. I'm here now to hopefully get a bit educated and ask why could this have happened was it any bad practice i had or just bad luck, what inside the PSU made all this smoke and in general what even happened really here everything except the AIO was bought august 2019, AIO was beginning of 2023 In 2019 when i bought this stuff it was literally more then 10 months worth of my salary in the country i live and i have an okay salary, now this year just the new PSU was a bit more then a quarter of my salary, tech stuff is very expensive here, thats why i went with a bit cheaper one this time these are the specs if it helps with anything GPU: MSI GeForce RTX 2080 Ti 11 GB GAMING X TRIO RAM: G.Skill Trident Z RGB 32 GB (4 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 CPU: Intel Core i9-9900K 3.6 GHz 8-Core Processor Motherboard: MSI MPG Z390 GAMING PRO CARBON AC CPU Cooler: be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4 ARCTIC Liquid Freezer Storage: Samsung 970 Pro 512 GB M.2 NVME SSD Storage: Samsung 860 Evo 1 TB 2.5" SSD Power Supply: Corsair RMx (2018) 750 W 80+ Gold WhatsApp Video 2023-06-19 at 13.52.25.mp4
  2. The last two days where I live have been hellish with all the smoke blowing down from Canada. With my Asthma, Allergies and recovering from COVID this has been really rough for me. Its a good thing I have have not stopped wearing masks yet. Today we hit and AQI rating of 460 at the peak and averaged around 395-410 for the county. I have been avoiding using any electronic device that uses air to cool itself as much as possable since the smoke is definently not good for them. Even though a vast majority will never make it inside I still can smell the smoke when near the windows. Still I wonder just how bad for electronics smoke actually is. I hope as few people as posible in Canada are threated by the fires.
  3. TLDR: PSU cable burnt out at the sat connector causing a small fire burning through 8 cables: 3 from the PSU, 1 temp gauge sensor wire extension and 2 SATA cables and 2 usb 2.0 internal head cables going to the front IO and a fan filter (see photos). PC runs fine with replaced cables, though I have alot of soot removal to do luckily it's a black case not a white one! So I open the office door and I see a smokey room and smell of burning electronics. Nice. Should be a good Friday then... Feel free to chuck your guess for the issue below, just about to start looking into the issue (6pm GMT 7/4/23). Yea... This is my only and so main pc (luckily I can trouble shoot with another pc though it isn't mine). Yea... I understand data back ups etc, don't do what I should. It's old, 4770k era but its would I got. Overclocked to as much as it'll take 4.6ghz. Watercooled, custom loop, CPU, VRMs and GPU. Yea.. I know my psu is over the top Im aiming for a very quiet pc ie it runs fanless also all the time. Yea... I know my water-cooling is really over the top. Again, the aim was to not be able to tell it my pc was on even when gaming (I was successful if your interested). Water-cooling is serviced semi regularly but not in the last 9-12mo. Yea.. that's alot of fans....none run above 500rpm, at 90% of the time at least 6/8 rad fans are off (4+ hrs of anno 1800 just about has them all spinning.. just) Anno 1800 has a population of over 100k if your interested. I'll update as I learn what is and isn't okay. Enjoy the thread... naturally if I get stuck I'll add a question or two. Specs: i7 4470k # 4.6ghz 32gb ddr3 corsairs lpx memory. Mobo: Asus Formula (VI I think). Z68. PSU: bequiet dark power 12 1000w ( a recent addition following my 1000w seasonic platinum died after nearly 12 years. MSI 1080ti Aero OC (custom OC + voltage curve) runs at round 2ghz. 6 SSDs: 2*2tb(software raid 1, personal videos and photos). 4*500gb (1 is the boot drive), other are games drives) Case Corsair 900D Water cooling: 2*480 alpha cool all copper 60mm deep rads, D5 pump, alpha cool XSPC pump top, EK CPU, GPU blocks, EK reservoir, Asus mobo block (VRM). Fans: 4*bequiet solvent wings 3 (in exhaust, 3 intake. 8 Corsair SP120 fans on rads (4 intake, 4 exhaust). Fluid: mayhem's pre mix (X1 I think). If you made it this fair vote in the poll: What died? https://strawpoll.com/polls/eJnvvDXKxnv And a bonus fact, there is a known slow leak on the drain fitting however this is below all components and electronics and drops maybe once every week through a whole on the bottom on the case. Wish me luck. Update: 09:30pm. Good little fire, burnt out 8 cables and a fan filter. Appears the power cable burnt up between the PSU and an SSD. Everything I can confirm smells rough... With any luck some airing out and a good clean can fix that. Time to buy some cables and hopefully there aren't any other issues remaining. Sorry to those that figured a leak or terrible component failure. Complete 10am 08/04/2023 PSU cable burnt out at the sat connector causing a small fire burning through 8 cables: 3 from the PSU, 1 temp gauge sensor wire extension and 2 SATA cables and 2 usb 2.0 internal head cables going to the front IO and a fan filter (see photos). PC runs fine with replaced cables, though I have alot of soot removal to do luckily it's a black case not a white one!
  4. I was initially building a new PC for my so but when I was testing to boot the pc, the moment I flipped switch for the power supply, it immediately sparked and started smoking inside. I immediately unplugged the PSU cable from the outlet and honestly right now I'm scared I fried any electronics on the motherboard. The PSU in question is a Gigabyte P650B, R7 5700g cpu, 2x8gb ddr4 HyperX Fury ram with an Kingston m.2 drive. I genuinely don't know what to do here however I can confirm that there were no sparks on the mobo side. Just on the PSU.
  5. My pc wasn't starting up so I searched for the problem. I thought the PSU was the problem so I bought a new one. I exchanged the PSU and connected all wires and stuff. I started the PC and it instantly shuts off and on and off and repeats this process. I didn't change one of the SATA cables cause I thought its the same as the one coming with the new PSU. Turns out it wasn't. I change the SATA cable to the new one. I turn on the pc and it runs fully normal, but after a while smoke came out of the PSU. I shut down the PC. Wich parts are still usable/ do I need to replace? What was the problem? What should I do now?
  6. Title kinda says it all. I have bought a secondhand motherboard from a smoker and after cleaning it with IPA and letting it air out it still smells. Now that I've got most of my PC I want to build the thing and see if it ever starts. The problem is that I have a brand new case, a brand new PSU and a brand new cooler and I am worried that after some use all the other components will end up smelling like cigarettes. Will this happen or am I good to go?
  7. Today, my GPU died on me because of overheating and some exploded VRM's. From my research, the VRM's are missing an essential cooling component that EVGA decided to skip during the manufacturing process. Apparently EVGA knows about this issue, involving the overheating of the 1080 FTW VRM's. I received the card as a gift from a friend who was selling his old computer hardware. That means I do not have any warranty on the product. I was wondering if anyone knows a good temporary card that I could use until the 30 series becomes more readily available? I would spend no more than $300 on the temporary GPU. Any suggestions? I play moderate gaming, so any suggestion helps.
  8. I wake up, turn on my computer (specs will be found below) and after browsing the internet for a while, i hear a familiar hiss coming from it. The hiss had happened before in what seemed to be random and very sparse times, so i never could figure out what component was causing it nor if it was even a problem i should be concerned with at all since my computer makes all kinds of noises anyway. But this time the Hiss was much more pronnounced and persistent, enough so that i felt the need to take out my phone and start filming my computer so that i could later ask in a similar post as this one what all the fuss is about and whether i should be concerned. Then right when i start filming, this happens : https://youtu.be/hcyVIbbFJwA Surprisingly everything was working FINE even after the pop. the graphics card was detected and all was well but i shut the computer off almost immediatly as you can see in the video to be cautious. Now the first thing i notice is my fans aren't working, so i don't know if that could have helped cause whatever that was. The GPU was bought exactly 2 years from the moment it blew up (so 08/11/2018) from a moroccan reseller and they only offer one year warranty for everything they sell so i don't think contacting them could do any good. I have not yet tested the GPU to see if it is still working (the computer is though) for fear of it causing some other damage, so given i am fairly ignorant in this field i would rather ask knowledgable people about the steps i should undertake and if there is anything i need to do to figure out/solve the problem or atleast avoid making things worse. My setup : GPU: Geforce gtx 1060 6gb CPU: Intel Core i5 4460 H-DRIVE: Seagate Barracuda 1 Tera RAM: Kingston HyperX Fury 8 Go DDR3 1866 MHz CL10 PSU: Cooler Master G750M 80PLUS Bronze Modulaire MOBO: ASRock B85M HDS OS: Windows 10
  9. i was buildong my new system and i finnaly finished but when i tried to turn it on nothing would happen after a few minutes i tried again and there was an explosion in the power supply.I would really apritiate your thoths and help with this.
  10. So a couple of weeks ago early hours of the morning, there was a house fire that claimed all of upstairs. The fire started in my bedroom and the smoke seeped into my computer room. Since the fire brigade arrived quickly and extinguished the fire within minutes of it starting, the fire stayed in that room and the hall. The independent company doing the repairs have said that the computer is probably toast (it was on at the time of the fire too) but the HDD and SSD would probably be fine. This makes sense, as the soot on the HDD was only on the top and was minimal, and the SSD was attached to the back of the Zalman Z11 case that I had, and had almost no soot on it at all. So, my question is, what is the effect of this smoke on the longevity of these drives? Would I still be able to use them? Or do I need to get new storage devices? I'm planning a build for a new PC atm as the insurance has now verified that they will pay, so I'm just wondering what parts I need to put in. I'm also really behind on the new technologies that are in place now, so I'm really just throwing crap together seeing what works (my build was Z97 haswell), but I'm digressing now. Tl;dr: Computer irreversibly damaged by smoke, HDD and SSD are said to be fine, how long will they last?
  11. I hope you all can be of some help. After upgrading my cpu/motherboard/ram combo, I booted the system and it booted no issue and ran stably which I tweaked the bios and got windows working on the new hardware. I then unplugged the system from the power directly so I could work on my cable management. When I plugged the system back in, there was a spark sound. Not thinking anything of it I pressed the power button, and smoke began to pour out of the computer. I unplugged it immediately and am unsure how to proceed. I am 99% sure the issue is with the PSU as there are no blown capacitors on the motherboard. Any help at all would be appreciated. Thank you.
  12. So I recently re-built my PC in my new case, and earlier today I noticed that one of the fan cables went over the 24 pin motherboard connector. I looked at this and thought "That would look much better if I made it go underneath, as that way you can't see it so well". So I unplugged the connector, routed it under the cable, and then went to plug it back in. The computer was still on BTW. When I plugged it in I thought I saw smoke so I pulled it out, but there was so little of it that I assumed it was nothing and plugged it in again. This time I could see it clearly, so I pulled it out and switched off the power supply. Oddly enough the computer was running fine through all of this. After looking around the fan header to see where the smoke had come from I noticed a chip that looked burnt: After doing some research (And finding nothing relevant to my problem), I fired up the computer again, and it's working fine. I played some games to put it under load, and there hasn't been any problems. While I still don't know exactly what happened, my best guess is that I unplugged the fan header before the chip got fried (The fan header does still work BTW), and that I should have shut down the PC before plugging in the fan. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts though, as I couldn't find anyone with a similar problem. My motherboard is the MSI Z97 Gaming 5, if that helps.
  13. Hey guys, I'm kinda frustrated with Blender 2.79. How do I apply a Quick Smoke effect? I created a flow object, added quiick smoke and baked it. The question is, how do I save the smoke at that point foreveeeer. I don't wanna handle the smoke effect every time I restart the project. As soon as I apply the smoke effect modifier, the smoke disappears. Help, please. Helge Screenshot http://prntscr.com/nw99hk
  14. Hi, I have Msi z370 tomahawk And I tried to install CD ROM, but for some reason my MB started smoking and some capacitor started glowing. (He is located under lowest PCI-Express slot.) Is the MB dead? Sorry for the photo, bad lightning. Also I was manipulating with power supply.
  15. Hey guys first off here is my specs: CPU: Intel i7 8700K CPU Cooler: NZXT Kraken X62 Motherboard: Asrock Z370 Gaming K6 RAM: 32GB GSkill Ripjaws 3600Mhz GPU: Gigabye 980Ti G1 Gaming PSU: Corair RM850X So a bit of back story, Last year my Motherboard died and I wasn't 100% sure if it was Motherboard, CPU or PSU so I erred on the side of caution and upgraded all. Not sure if this could effect what happened over the past few months. Over the past few months, my GPU has been exhibiting weird behaviour. A few examples are: 1. The LED on the side (Windforce) should be set to blue but sometimes it's off completely and sometimes it's white. I always double check the software and when it's acting like this, any changes in the software don't have any effect. 2. The GPU reverts from PCI-E 3.0 16x to 8x 3. I experience huge amounts of lag, fps drops or stuttering in GAMES. Rebooting or turning off PC does not help any of these. What DOES fix all 3 issues is unplugging and replugging the PSU cables into the GPU or switching off the PSU at the switch on the back. These 3 things have been happening on and off for a few months. So last night, there was a sound (I had headphones on but I heard something), my entire screen went red with no text or anything and I smelt burning (electrical). It was coming from GPU, PC still boots with or without GPU but don't want to test with GPU because everytime I do it smells like burning. I checked motherboard and I can't see any blown capacitors. My PC seems completely fine without GPU, no smell, all clocks running smoothly, stress tests are no issue. It seems very likely to be a dead GPU or even just a blown cap considering it is 4.5 years old and the rest of my PC is ~6months old. There is no smell from the PSU but I noticed that when it is switched on there is a buzzing sound similar to coil whine even if the PC is not on. Also whenever I switch off the PSU at the switch at the back, if flick the switch slowly there is a zapping noise while flicking it. Are either of these normal? I'm happy to buy a 2080 Super IF it is an isolated GPU issue, my fear is that it may be the PSU or something else and it might kill my new GPU. Please help. What do you guys think? TL;DR I was playing using my PC last night, there was a sound (I head headphones on but I heard something), my entire screen went red with no text or anything and I smelt burning (electrical). It was coming from GPU, PC still boots with or without GPU but don't want to test with GPU because everytime I do it smells like burning.
  16. I have Gskill Ripjaws 8gb DDR4 2400 Mhz RAM stick. Now there is a Mind Blowing deal is appeared on the amazon, Corsair Vengeans 8gb 2400Mhz C16 RAM stick is available for just Rs.2990. Can I put this with the Gskill one to make Dual Channel Memory Configuration in my PC ?
  17. Hi, I have had my Razer Kraken's for short of a year. I have always had an issue with the braided cable, I would have to untangle it almost daily... That issue can be seen here (Someone elses post on Razer): https://insider.razer.com/index.php?threads/what-do-you-do-when-your-cords-start-bending-into-knots-with-braided-cables.11833/ Well they have started to give me a lot of issues the last month or so. Much like an iPhone charger, if I slightly move they turn off, on, off, on over and over. I have been meaning to replace them for a while but not got round to it. Today I start smelling burning plastic or similar, I look at my pc and dont see any smoke. So, I go to take my headset of to look out my window to see if anyone had a fire bonfire near my house, incase I need to close all the windows around the house. I then feel the heat on my finger as it burns me and see the smoke coming from the cable on my headset... They still work, but I am obviously never plugging them back in... to think what could of happened if I wasn't in the room at the time. First thing I did was google about the headphones. There are a lot of posts on all kinds of forums about the cable becoming tangled so quickly and never going back straight. A lot of posts "How to change the cable on the Razer Krakens" and so on. But, one did stand out to me. This post of their Krakens catching on fire. Now the guy didn't explain it very well or provide any pictures but, it makes me think it might be more of a common issue than first thought? I caught mine before the cable melted much, so there isnt any thing visual except a small white dot. Now it could be caused by many reasons, to my understanding. The wiring inside is most probably damaged anyway because how tightly they knot up. It could be a short in the wiring? My other thought is it overheating because the cable is wrapping in spots. Mine started right up by my head and I was wearing a hoodie. So the cable was probably in with my hood a bit and tightly knotted causing it the get hot, fast. Would like to know what others think. Ima go buy some wireless headphones, any suggestions?
  18. Hi, first time posting here and not a native speaker, I hope I'm doing everything right. This is my problem: Three days ago when I turned on my computer that I built almost 4 years ago (never had any problems) it shut off and it smelled like burnt plastic. I disassembled everything and found the source of the smell to come from the power supply (Corsair RM550) so I ordered a new one (Seasonic M12II-520 Evo). It arrived yesterday so I connected back all the cables to the new power supply, tried to turn it back on but it still wasn't working, the fans spun for maybe a second and then it would shut off. I tried disconnecting all the unnecessary parts such as the graphics card and left the bare minumum but nothing changed. Fast forward to today: I double checked all the cables and connections and tried once again turning it on. I see smoke coming from the disks so I immediately turn off the power supply and disconnect the cables. From the image below you can see that the SSD power connector (the one on top) is a bit molten while the HDD (the one on the bottom) was mostly ok, just a little molten plastic that I removed. The other HDD I had in my system doesn't look damaged. So my questions are: What is causing the issue? My first idea was the power cable connecting the disks to the power supply since I didn't replace it with the new ones that came with the new power supply. Can I recover the data from the disks? There isn't anything really important in them but the SSD was my primary driver with the OS and some files I'd like to recover if possible (music library, photos, save files). If it's useful to know I live in Italy. If you need any more informations/photos feel free to ask. Any help is greatly appreciated!
  19. Attention readers: This has not been a problem after the incident, I just wish to find out what happened. A long while back, like 6 months ago, i heard a zap from my PC and almost immediately smoke started coming out of the front panel. I quickly unplugged my PC from the wall and disassembled it. Nothing was wrong with it, no visual problems and nothing was hotter than usual. I took the 24 pin mobo power connector off and tested any problems with the PSU with a paper clip. (one of those PSU tests you find online) There was nothing wrong with that either. I decided to put the PC back together and try to boot it, and it worked flawlessly. Nothing had gone missing nor i was having any performance issues. As I said nothing like this hasn't happened ever after that one case, and I still haven't figured out what it was. From general interest on what happened, now I'm asking your help on this. Specs: Mobo: Acer Aspire XC-705 prebuilt mobo CPU: Intel i5-4460 Graphics card: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1050 Ti D5 4GB Memory: Kingston HyperX Fury black 16GB (2x 8GB) DDR3-1600MHz PSU: FSP Group FSP750-50ERN 750W 80+ Silver Storage: WD Blue 1TB 7200RPM Cooling: Intel stock CPU cooler NZXT FZ-200 200mm fan slapped on the side panel Small 40mm fan on the front panel NZXT GRID Fan controller
  20. So I have a Dell optiplex motherboard. I removed it from its case and placed it on a bench that I've made in a box. I've connected all of the parts on the motherboard. When I tried turning on the pc it didn't turn on so I figured out later that the ram slot is not functional I have no idea why. Then after removing the RAM piece from the unfunctional slot and when I tried turning on the pc, smoke came out of it and it's probably the motherboard because I saw brown stains on the back of it. My question is that whats the reason of the ram slot malfunctioning and why my motherboard got fried?
  21. Hello everyone! This is my first post so please be gentle. So I was playing some (bout 2h) Civ VI with a friend and everything went nice and smoothly. We stopped and I left my pc hanging on the desktop for about 2 minutes while I went and got some coffee. I came back to my pc turned off and not starting up anymore with the power button. I checked the power cables and removed the side panel. After pressing the power button I saw mobo lighting up for second before powering off again and some smoke rising from my gpu. I quickly turned psu off and unplugged the cables from the wall. Later I took the system to a local shop where they checked that only the gpu is toasted. This is okay for me, that was the oldest part in my system but the thing is I updated my psu a couple of months ago and during the switch I bricked my ssd. I thought it was because I used the old psus cable for the ssd's power (xfx 650w xxx Edition or something like that) and the new corsair psu gave it too much juice or something. Is It possible my new psu is bad and breaking my other parts or are these just weird coincidences? My system: Win 10 home Edition 64-bit Asus b450-f gaming Ryzen 5 3600 (noctua nh-d15) Corsair vengeance 16gb 3200mhz ddr4 Msi gtx 1070 gaming x (dead) Corsair rm650x psu (2018 Edition) Adata xpg gammix s11 (boot drive) Kingston 960gb ssd (storage) Fractal r5 with 3x140mm fans
  22. I built my first PC a week ago and it was working perfect up on till today. Today I put it on and, a chip, which was under the first pcie slot and above the cmos battery on my asus b250h gaming motherboard started to smoke and make a crackling noise. I instantly unplugged the PC and waited 2 hours before I tried to turn it on again. Now when I press the power button, it turns on and off about 5 times and displays nothing on screen, then it turns on like normal. When it is on them chip is burning hot (I got burnt when I touched it) and the chip has 2 bumps on it. Any help or advice will be appreciated.
  23. So about a year or so ago a guy came into the store I work at and asked if we could build his new system for him? We said yes and so he brought in the parts that he had ordered. Now it's not uncommon around this area for college students that want a nice computer but have a budget to go out and order parts to build a system themselves without fully grasping how hard it could be to build the system(Relative to skill and understanding) We normaly charge about one and a half to two hours labor to do a build for a customer depending on the complexity of the build and/or the OS or software that they want loaded. In this guys case(No pun intended) we had to charge two hours labor for the build because... well here's the pictures of his parts off my Instagram Now as you can see that's one heck of a parts list. This is the kind of list I imagine gets made by going on PC Parts Picker and picking close to if not the most expensive parts on a platform. At the time of the build it was the single most expensive system by parts value I had ever worked on. Please forgive my pining for his system specs. Given the point of this post I have no regrets having my system and not his... Okay now that the intro is over, here's the deal. This build was done just as the EVGA 1080FTW ACX Thermal problems came to light and the Mass Recall stuff went down and wouldn't you know it, that's a pair of effected and there for theoretically Faulty 1080's. The customer had just picked the system up the day before the first videos hit YouTube about the situation and I said to myself, "If that guy watches any of this he's going to freak out..." Sure enough about a week later we get a call from the guy asking if he could bring the cards to us so we could take them apart and install the EVGA Thermal Pad Kits for him because he doesn't want to RMA his new cards and risk getting back different faulty cards... Well we said no because we don't want to risk damaging product that we didn't sell(I've taken GPU's apart many times and would do it for my own card in a heart beat but no way am I risking it with a customer part...) when EVGA would cover all the cost of shipping the cards to them to get the pads installed by them. The customer relented and sent the cards to EVGA and all was well until today. Today the customer came in and told me how, after about 6 months, one of the graphics cards had failed. He RMA'd the card and all was well until again just yesterday another GPU failed. Well he thinks it's the GPU given where the magic blue smoke came from. He opted to bring it in so that we could diagnose the problem. If it's just another faulty GPU, the cards have warranties and EVGA is damn good with dealing with RMA's. If it turns out his PSU some how was killing his GPU's, or the Mobo has a fault or what ever the case may be otherwise, then we will be able to diagnose and deal with it for him. This guy spent close to $3,000 on this computer and factoring in GPU values it's worth more now then it was when he built it. I fell for the guy and want to help him out I just hope that his problem is just the GPU. We don't have any PSUs larger then an EVGA 750GQ in stock so if it's a PSU then he's stuck RMA'ing his Corsair unit or waiting for a larger one to be ordered in(It's got a good warranty too so RMA is only logical) If it's the motherboard, well we have an ASUS Prime Z270-A in stock we can drop in that will work, but it will make his ROG Head unit worthless unless he again opts to RMA the motherboard(Again Warranties are nice to have) Well that's the situation all. This guy has himself a beast of a gaming rig and it's had one GPU go out on him in the past year with what looks to be a second(And no I didn't get clarification if this one is the one that came back from EVGA after the first one failed.) What do you all think? Is it going to be the GPU again? Is it something else that's contributing to killing the GPU's? Or is this guy just running some crypto mining in the background of his computer cooking the GPUs? Honestly as he said this failure happens while he was browsing the web and not gaming makes me think he may have been mining via that browser based mining script...
  24. Title explains it. I was helping a friend re-make his build. His motherboard (a cruddy pre-built one) was hosting a 1080 and an alright CPU, and couldn't take it. After we had moved all of the components to the new motherboard, we tested the rig out of the case. Quickly after boot, the GPU started throwing smoke. We immediately pulled power - and tried to find what we had done wrong to cause it. His GPU, an EVGA 1080 SC ACX, smoldering in the corner. We went to troubleshoot - trying to see if the motherboard or PSU was to blame for delivering too much power (something like that) - so I threw on an R7250. With no issues, we came to the conclusion that it was the $500 GPU's fault. "Well, the GPU's already dead. There's no harm in trying to re-create the incident," we thought, plugging the GPU back in. And... it booted fine this time. He's currently using the GPU in his rig. But seriously, his GPU is going to develop cancer. Any thoughts?
  25. So i was trying to clean up the wires in my PC, and i also decided to put in a cleaner looking SATA cable, it had 3 SATA power connectors, so i 2 of them to my SSD, and HDD. When i turned the PC on, the whole thing engulfed in smoke. When i investigated what happened after shutting down the PC, i found the SSD like this (see pic). Obviously, the SSD is a complete loss, but the rest of the PC is fine, and connectors on the HDD seem to be intact. However, it's not showing up in the Bios. Basically, what I'm trying ask, is the HDD also fried? Thanks in advance for the help.
