  1. I hope you all can be of some help. After upgrading my cpu/motherboard/ram combo, I booted the system and it booted no issue and ran stably which I tweaked the bios and got windows working on the new hardware. I then unplugged the system from the power directly so I could work on my cable management. When I plugged the system back in, there was a spark sound. Not thinking anything of it I pressed the power button, and smoke began to pour out of the computer. I unplugged it immediately and am unsure how to proceed. I am 99% sure the issue is with the PSU as there are no blown capacitors on the motherboard. Any help at all would be appreciated. Thank you.
  2. So first post here on LTT...Sorry if it is long. I need some help and input people! Should i keep both graphics cards & try do to an upgrade to SLI, sell the higher ASIC Card (Card1) on ebay or LTT, or keep both and include Card1 in my current computer to put out in the garage to potentially mine cryptocurrency? I bought 2 used EVGA 980 ti Classified off of ebay accidentally because I won 2 bids instead of just 1. Yes I know I got caught up in bidding because every one was getting taken at the last minute... TLDR - both bought for the same price (~$315). One card seems to be better than the other, but it smelled terribly of cigarette smoke until i cleaned it! What should I do with it? I use my current single 980 ti for some light gaming (1080p, 60 hz monitor), paired with an i5-4570, just trying to keep my computer relevant for another year or so, until i upgrade my monitor or build a new Ryzen system. My dilemma: Card1 - aka Stinky - I find out has a ASIC quality of 74.1%, I tested some overclocking with EVGA precision XOC and went into the 1510+ range. I don't remember how high (I never added voltage). The Problem: It smells pretty bad to me because I don't smoke, and even after cleaning the heatsink out of dust and smoke particles, still circulates a smoke smell. I can't really stand the smell even though it is pretty faint now. Options: 1.Sell Stinky on ebay (or LTT?). Should I ask a higher price because of the ASIC? How much should i downgrade the price because of the smell? Losing money from ebay fees would stink. The original seller didn't mention the smell at all...I will of course describe it exactly as is when I sell. I'm located in Texas for those wondering. 2. Keep Stinky and do 1 of 2 things: 2A: Put Stinky in current computer and buy an SLI bridge. Would need to buy a bigger power supply than my current 500W CX500M for this 4 year old computer. Would only do this if anyone knows that the smell should dissipate soon over time. Anyone have experience? Of course I should buy a newer 1440p or ultrawide for gaming to take advantage of that. 2B: Put Stinky in my computer in place of card2, then put out in garage with old monitor to start cryptocurrency mining? The smell would be out in the hot garage then. My total power cost is 0.046 $/kWh total here. I think it would work for ethereum. This would make me get into Ryzen or Threadripper sooner than I planned. I could then use card2 in my new build for a year or so. Votes, input, & other options appreciated! Anyone who wants the card, I could put in the classified section of the forum in an official post. [If I'm allowed to say that here]
  3. it went out with a bang

i was buildong my new system and i finnaly finished but when i tried to turn it on nothing would happen after a few minutes i tried again and there was an explosion in the power supply.I would really apritiate your thoths and help with this.
  4. So I recently re-built my PC in my new case, and earlier today I noticed that one of the fan cables went over the 24 pin motherboard connector. I looked at this and thought "That would look much better if I made it go underneath, as that way you can't see it so well". So I unplugged the connector, routed it under the cable, and then went to plug it back in. The computer was still on BTW. When I plugged it in I thought I saw smoke so I pulled it out, but there was so little of it that I assumed it was nothing and plugged it in again. This time I could see it clearly, so I pulled it out and switched off the power supply. Oddly enough the computer was running fine through all of this. After looking around the fan header to see where the smoke had come from I noticed a chip that looked burnt: After doing some research (And finding nothing relevant to my problem), I fired up the computer again, and it's working fine. I played some games to put it under load, and there hasn't been any problems. While I still don't know exactly what happened, my best guess is that I unplugged the fan header before the chip got fried (The fan header does still work BTW), and that I should have shut down the PC before plugging in the fan. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts though, as I couldn't find anyone with a similar problem. My motherboard is the MSI Z97 Gaming 5, if that helps.
  5. So i was trying to clean up the wires in my PC, and i also decided to put in a cleaner looking SATA cable, it had 3 SATA power connectors, so i 2 of them to my SSD, and HDD. When i turned the PC on, the whole thing engulfed in smoke. When i investigated what happened after shutting down the PC, i found the SSD like this (see pic). Obviously, the SSD is a complete loss, but the rest of the PC is fine, and connectors on the HDD seem to be intact. However, it's not showing up in the Bios. Basically, what I'm trying ask, is the HDD also fried? Thanks in advance for the help.
  6. So, I got up to do something, and according to my brother, it had a very glitchy looking grey screen. It smelled like something was burning, so my brother just turned off the power supply. After about 5 minutes of trying to figure out what had went wrong, I tried turning it on again and it halted on the Windows 7 boot screen. After about an hour, I tried again it it did boot and everything was working properly. I checked the motherboard and everything looked fine, temperatures were normal. Weirdly, after the computer glitching, my games ran a bit faster somehow So I have no clue what happened, any suggestions? Everything is working completely fine now, but I am curious.
  7. So I was using my hackintosh (it wasn't an intensive workload) when suddenly sparks and smoke came from under the left-hand side VRM heatsink and from the CPU area. Motherboard is a Gigabyte Z77X-UD5H. Upon further inspection, I could not detect any blown capacitors near the VRM's or anywhere else on the motherboard, or any burn marks anywhere on the front or back of the mobo. I removed my CPU and it seems to have not been harmed (it looks the same as when I installed it) it did not seem to be burned in any way. I doubt if the CPU died because of high temperatures, because modern CPU's are designed to blue screen or shut down in case of temps reaching tjmax. One thing to note is that I have a nzxt Kraken aio cooler, which has no signs of leaking. My i5 3570k has been OC'd and stable @ 4.5 GHz for almost two years, so I don't think the overclock hurt the VRM's. I am sure it is not the graphics card (760) because I removed it and the mobo shorted again. I tested the PSU via paper clip method and it runs smoothly, but can I rule out the possibility of the PSU shorting? Should I just RMA the mobo, or is their any way to further test the PSU?
  8. Is my GPU finished?

Hi everyone, I was using my computer earlier and noticed my GPU fans weren't spinning. I went into MSI afterburner and indeed the fans were all set to 0. I changed the speeds manually and it seemed to work, however whenever I put it into auto mode. they just stayed at where I last set the fan to. I then shut down the computer and checked to see if the PWM fan was connected all the way to the headers which it was. Then, upon switching the PSU back on and then pressing the power button, the GPU fans spun for half a second. With an audible pop, hiss, and then a puff of smoke from the PWN wire with the wiring looking like it spit open (which upon inspecting it did) my PC shut down. Which now leads me to believe my GPU is dead, however somewhere in my mind I doubt it. What do you guys think? I've never had this happened to me before and was wondering if I can still salvage my card. Which is by the way an MSI 290X with an Arctic Accelero III aftermarket cooler. Any input and help I can get would be greatly appreciated! Attached is what the PWM wire now looks like
  9. Just curious to see who is out there. Why did you start vaping? What is your current set up? Favorite juice?
  10. just playing around with my laser when i found this, at the start the laser is viewed from behind a welding mask purely due to no camera i own can take that much light.... but yea burning the wick you see small mushroom clouds none of the smoke left the cup until i tipped it out... magic.
  11. Hello everyone. My gaming computer released the magic blue smoke today when I plugged in a faulty DVI cable into the onboard graphics. ~~IF ANYONE HAS AN ASROCK Z77 EXTREME4, PLEASE TRY TO GET A GOOD PHOTOGRAPH IF THE PARTS NEAR THE HDMI PORT~~ This cable had given me troubles before when I used it on my normal graphics cards, but the cards just simply shut off instead of exploding things. I decided to mark the cable as defective using the Photonicinduction method that way I wouldnt mix it up with my other 50 spare cables. Anyway, when the cable was plugged in, after about 10 seconds I smelled the smell that we are all so unfortunately familiar with. However, the PC kept going. My eyefinity monitors weren't disturbed, and the audio I was playing continued to play. I shut the machine down immediately and unplugged the cable once I smelled smoke. Is this machine still safe to operate? Or should I desolder and replace the blown component? I have had SMD soldering experience. If I desolder anything, what should replace it? The failed component appears to be D8, a diode? Other parts on the board seem to be labeled "LNW 24" but have different designators. I have some low-tech marco photos of the only visibly failed part as well as the annihilated cable in a .zip file, and they can be found full size here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-LjUeh-cirIeVJTbEYwa1pUMnc/view?usp=sharing Motherboard is an Asrock Z77 Extreme4 if anyone has the same board. Thanks!! Note, this is the same post as here where more photos can be found: http://www.eevblog.com/forum/repair/my-motherboard-released-the-magic-blue-smoke!!!/ please let me know if cross posting is not allowed. Edit: It works! Thanks everyone.
  12. Massive frame drops in CS:GO

I've been having some really bad frame drops in CS:GO where it drops from 299fps all the way down to 50fps when i'm looking into smoke.I didnt have this issue just last week when when i had my old OS but i bought an SSD so i went for a fresh install but now i have these massive frame drops.BF4,WT,R2TW all work fine but CS:GO has been bugging me.I have an R9 290 with the latest 14.12 omega drivers an i5 4460 and 8GB of RAM.I have tried re-installing it multiple times (once on a new hard drive and i deleted all the old CS GO files from the other directory) but to no avail.I have also tried to verify the game cache on steam multiple times and it didnt work either.
  13. Front I/O Smoke

hello everyone, when i finished building my pc about a week ago, i noticed that i forgot to hook up the front I/O L.E.D but i wasnt bothered to go back a connect it. however, today i decided to connect it and i did using a molex from the power supply and i worked just fine for 6-8 hours until i connected my headphone suddenly i smelt smoke and i immediately shut down my system and i identified the source to be the front I/O so i disconnected the LED connection and booted up the system which is now working fine but does anyone know what caused this and if there's a solution for this shit. Thanks All In Advance :-)
  14. UPDATE: Replacement Siwftech H220 has ALSO failed. Pump failure was the cuase, but this time, in a less "chaotic" way. Well...I received my Swiftech H220 from NCIX last week. I Performed a full inspection on the exterior of the unit - all checked out okay, other then a few minor bent radiator fins. Installed the unit into my system today, and approximately after 20 minutes of operation, white electrical smoke started to emerge from the 4-pin PWM connection that comes out from the CPU water block / pump. Powered the system down IMMEDIATELY by pressing and holding the power button on my computer. Thankfully I was standing right beside my computer. Inspected the unit and saw part of the insulation on the 4-pin PWN connector is melted, and a bit of the black plastic on the block itself (near the connector) is burnt / melted. The CPU water block / pump was quite warm to the touch. I don't even know what to say. Quite literally less than 30 minutes of operation. I'm actually shocked that this happened. I've installed the unit according to the instruction booklet provided with the H220 unit, AND referred to the instructional videos on Swiftech's website. Additionally, I checked the BIOS to make sure the pump was being controlled via PWM. After clearing the smoke from my house (smell is still lingering), I began to do some research. This seems to be a common issue with the H220 - premature pump failure. I noticed a bit of what seemed like the sound of water rushing through when I was handling the H220. I'm beginning to assume the kit was not completely filled with liquid from the factory, and there were air bubbles in the loop. As a result, the air might of gotten trapped at the pump and made it operate dry, causing this failure to occur. I've already started an RMA with my retailer, NCIX, hopefully some-what better news will come back from them and/or Swiftech. Was thinking Swiftech, a company known for their liquid cooling products, and the concept of an expandable liquid cooling All-In-One kit...being able to overclock my FX-8350 further than 4.8GHz, hopefully into the 5GHz zone...and stay cool during the summer temperatures...just...I don't know what to say.
  15. SMOKE From Laptop Exhaust

Hey! I have a Lenovo 3000 G230 (Win 7 Ultimate 32bit) and though it is five years old it is still serving me well. The one problem it suffers is temperatures; it runs really hot after 30 minutes of normal use. Part of the problem is the laptop’s lack of intake and exhaust, it really needs more, and also I think the thermal compound may need replacing. Anyways today after a three hour drive I returned home and started it up on a table. As soon as the fan started I noticed smoke coming from the exhaust! I instinctively closed the laptop and removed the battery; shutting down the laptop instantly. I am not sure what has caused this, perhaps a component in the cooling system broke, or (less likely) something got into the exhaust and was cooked. The laptop was stored vertically during the drive (if that’s relevant) and I am now using it to write this, it started normally and is running as normal (which is very hot) Does anyone know what could have caused this? Will it have any effect on my laptop? Any replies are greatly appreciated
  16. Speakers just went up in smoke?

My co-worker kindly gave me a pair of pretty standard stero speakers, hooked them up and tired them out and they sounded great. I was fiddling about with the speaker wire making sure it was all connected properly and noticed the wires were sparking when touching the terminals, not sure why but then the left speaker just stopped working, nothing but a hum. Shortly after smoke starting coming out of the right speaker so I killed the power. I have no idea what just happened, they were working fine when I was testing them but after connecting and disconnecting the speaker wire things started going bad, any ideas? I'm kind of afriad to plug them back in
  17. This is my first real post on the forum, might be a little messy. So yeah, my SSD may have caught on fire ?? I was gaming (nothing too intensive: Brütal Legend) when I noticed a bunch of smoke coming from my case. I instantly turned off the computer, opened the side panel and then unplugged the computer from the wall socket. (The computer seemed ok on the software side when I noticed the smoke, no glitch no nothing) The sata power connector for my SSD was pretty much melted, the SSD was cold to the touch (aluminium casing) I unplugged the connector, to make sure it wasn't melting and then hardening in place making it impossible to unplug later Smoke was still coming out of the SSD a good ten minutes after the comp was off. There's now a bunch of nasty black stuff all over the place, and a nice smell of burnt plastic to go with it... So, I was wondering if any of you have had similar experiences and if you had any advice on how do proceed next. What I'm planning to do is, wait till stores open (it happened a little after 4 am) grab some air duster and remove the black stuff that's all over the case. And then maybe open the SSD casing to see if there's some damage in there, before I try to boot the computer with the same SSD and a new power cable. If you have any thoughts on things I should or should not do, feel free to contribute. I would also be interested on possible causes, so I could avoid a similar accident. If you need more information/details, feel free to ask.
  18. So I just received all the parts for my new computer and decided to make a quick testbench on my motherboard box before installing everything. All I had plugged was my motherboard (Asus Z87-A ATX), my CPU, my CPU fan, my RAM and my graphic card (GTX 770). I connected everything to my power supply (EVGA NEX750B) but as I am a beginner I made a mistake and I plugged the VGA1 8 pin-connector in the CPU power 8 pin connector. When I opened it, everything worked for 2 seconds. Then, a crack noise and everything stopped. Also smoke came out of the power supply. I just want to know if my other parts are ok. Or do I need to change all my parts that were connected?
  19. Recently, within the last 3 weeks I bought a Maximus VI Hero motherboard from Newegg.com. Yesterday I installed it in my computer that I put together will parts all from newegg. (i7-4770k, GTX 770, Maximus Vi Hero, CoolerMaster V700 PSU Phantom 820, Kraken x60 ect.) Upon turning it on using the the start button on the motherboard, there was a large spark, and a small amount of smoke coming from the 8-pin EATX12V plug for the CPU, in the top left corner of the motherboard. The system immediately shut down and I pulled out the power. There is now a burn mark right above the plug. I'm not quite sure if it is the PSU or the Motherboard, or infact me. Could someone help?
