  1. if i build a small computer in a nas case(Please help me find a nas case), put windows on it and use it as a nas with a backblaze pc backup subscription on it to keep all my dta backed up, (I wouldn't need very much bandwidth to it anyway), is it a good idea? What would the specs need to be for such a computer? Would a 2 core celeron be enough along with 8gigs of ram? It would mainly be used for backups. Also, any idea on how i could set up a decent local file sharing program? Windows samba file transfer only works on wondows and is quite crappy tbh, (I would have it backed up to backblaze anyway so i could access all the data from my phone if i need to but, say from my laptop which would be on the same LAN, is there a good way to access it other than making it a network drive?) update: why can’t I find a single NAS case under 400 usd?
  2. I am using Proxmox to host a collection of VMs including my Windows, and Ubuntu environment, as well as TrueNAS Scale. I am wanting to store local git repos on my NAS directly, (Not the server / remote repos). However there is an issue with file permissions on my shares since git want to run `chmod` on some of the files, and needs to keep track of updates. Which makes sense I am using SMB, with ACL and from what I read it really abstracts the permissions out. This is my first post on the forum, so if I messed something up, or need to supply additional info please let me know. tl;dr What is a good way of hosting local git repos on a network drive
  3. I am trying to mount a share from my Synology NAS called Backups to a specific Folder on my Ubuntu VM (on Windows Hyper-V). I have found a bunch of tutorials that use CIFS, so I tried the following command: sudo mount -t CIFS -o username=corectusername //NasIP/Backups BackupDel But I unfortunately get the following error: mount error: cifs filesystem not supported by the system mount error(19): No such device Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs) and kernel log messages (dmesg) It would be nice if anyone could help me. Thank you in advance.
  4. This is a long shot, but here we go: I'm attempting to replace a very specific machine for security purposes, one that even uses a parallel port license key. Surprisingly, I've gotten EVERYTHING to work except for the last layer, including installing the ancient software that was running on the Windows Server 2000 machine of its predecessor, but I've run into the very last hurdle that's been incredibly difficult to overcome. The Windows Server 2000 machine appears to use netBIOS over TCP/IP to communicate SMB with another machine running Windows NT. The Windows Server 2000 hosts a network share in its own Workgroup that connects to the Windows NT machine in its own workgroup. The replacement machine I've given a unique name and have tested it now on either workgroup to no success. The most difficult part of all of this is I've been unable to determine how these two machines communicate, since the Windows NT machine does not have a useful IP. The best I've come up with is that they communicate through netBIOS over TCP/IP, since the Windows Server 2000 machine can be anywhere on that VLAN and communicate to the NT machine, so this is happening between 1-2 switches (no hardware firewall between them). The other struggle is, I can communicate between the Windows Server 2000 machine and the new Windows 10 Pro machine designed to replace it through netBIOS perfectly fine. I believe the solution lies into specifically how the Windows Server 2000 machine can SMB to the Windows NT machine. I've been able to verify that connection both ways, but I've been unable to determine why it works between those two old machines specifically. I've sifted through the host entries and didn't find anything, so I'm not sure where else it would define cross Workgroup machines. New machine cpc3210 can see old machine, cpc32 but cannot see the hds machine. The goal being able to connect to hds090000544244 in this case. I believe the cpc32 connection proves the system is capable of SMB1 communication, which is enabled in features. Result of the same pathing. Note that these machines are connected through the same path to the hds machine. My theory is there's something specially configured between the Windows Server 2000 machine and Windows NT machine that I haven't found yet, nor have my collogues who are old enough to have actually used these OS's when current. I've also fully configured the group policy to allow SMB1 connectivity, adjusted sharing and advanced sharing policies, enabled the Functional Discovery Provider services. I haven't tested copying the name and MAC of the old machine in a while (I started out this way but changed it when it didn't succeed), but I may try that again since it was before doing those GPO and service configurations.
  5. I work for a company that recently moved away from a Windows Server 2008 hosted file share, and migrated to TrueNAS Scale. I have nothing but good things to say about the Truenas platform and the increased read/write of ZFS. Recently we have been running into a problem where files are being locked/opened as read-only by users, even when the file is not in use. TrueNAS, unlike vanilla SMB, blacklists socket options in the auxiliary parameters, making the TCP timeout options for incorrectly closed files hard to achieve. My usual solution is to restart the SMB share (not service) and kick any dead connections off. This is obviously not ideal and could cause some issues, I'd like to reach out and ask if anyone else has had similar issues, and or solutions to this problem. Here are the details of my share for reference. Use Case: TrueNAS Scale Bluefin 22.12.2 Hosted SMB Share The network is comprised of Windows machines, Running Windows 10 and 11. Some older equipment running Windows 7 that cannot be updated. Global SMB Service Settings: Workgroup WORKGROUP Enable SMB1 Support: False NTLMv1 Auth: False UNIX Charset: UTF-8 Log Level: Minimum Use Syslog Only: False Local Master: False Enable Apple SMB2/3 Protocol Extensions: False Administrators Group: itadmin Guest Account: nobody File Mask: Blank (Default 0666) Directory Mask: Black (Default 0777) Bind IP Addresses: Blank Auxiliary Parameters: aio read size = 16384 aio write size = 16384 ea support = no store dos attributes = no map archive = no map hidden = no map readonly = no map system = no hide dot files = yes case sensitive = yes delete veto files=yes veto files = /Thumbs.db/.DS_Store/ read only = no strict locking = no Share Parameters: No Preset ACL Enabled: True Browsable to Network Clients: True Allow Guest Access: True Enable Shadow Copies: True (For using snapshots/windows restore previous versions) Enable Alternate Data Streams: True
  6. Hello everyone, I'm seeking your assistance and advice regarding a data storage solution, and I'd appreciate your input. Here's what I'm looking for: 1. I'm in need of a local storage solution; I'm not considering cloud options like Google Drive or Dropbox. 2. The solution should offer remote access capabilities, as around 80% of the time I'll be accessing the data remotely. 3. I require the solution to provide controlled access permissions to employees. Not all employees should have access to the entire server. I find Google Drive's permission management appealing, where specific project folders can be shared with designated individuals. However, I can't use a cloud-based solution due to the sensitive nature of the data I'll be storing (it's all legal, related to financial data for my clients that I will be auditing). 4. Additionally, I need an activity log feature. In case an employee modifies or deletes a file, I need to be able to track who made the changes and when. I've noticed that my previous company used Google Drive as a means to access the server located within the organization. It seemed like Google Drive acted as an interface. If this approach is feasible, I'd appreciate learning how to set it up. Feel free to use technical words, I might be an auditor, but I do know things in the tech. I'm truly grateful to all participants for investing their valuable time and knowledge. Your help is much appreciated.
  7. I'm looking for recommendations for what is best to set up to access my data remotely from Truenas core From my research so far I see others using options such as: ZeroTeir NextCloud Wireguard Tailscale What is best to set up, affordable pricing, ease of set up, a good mobile app etc I also see that something like Tailscale might be better with Truenas Scale using Truecharts
  8. I have a 10GB SPF+ card which will be used for internal SMB file sharing. This is connected from server directly to two windows PC's via SPF+ cable And for internet a standard Gigabit / 2.5 Gigabit LAN card How do I set this up? So each networks is utilised accordingly
  9. I’m having issues with my truenas scale smb share. On windows clients when trying to transfer large amounts of files, 10k-30k+ files of varying sizes, after several hours of transferring will throw up an error saying “Too many files in use”. I enabled smb 2 on the windows client. Record size on the dataset is set to default 128k mostly defaults for ACL, sync is disabled for faster speed. The host system is an old AMD Bulldozer Fx8320 with 32Gb of ram in 8Gb x 4 configuration non ecc as the mb doesn’t support it. I have a two 120Gb SSD’s setup as log and read caches one for each. Using an approved intel NIC since the realtec onboard nic is not compatible with truenas per documentation. The dataset / vdev pool is two 2Tb Seagate Barracuda drives in a mirrored configuration. The smb share is configured as only smb not generic. Everything works great and the r/w speeds are more than acceptable except for when transferring large amounts of files. It doesn’t seem to be an issue transferring large files like multi gb files, just when sending large numbers of files. I’ve done some googling and searched the truenas scale forums and didn’t find any resolutions only other with the same issue. The client is a windows 11 Hp laptop 1st gen Rizen apu with 32Gb ram and 1Tb sata ssd.
  10. Slightly related to this post, as it's for that same desktop-NAS hybrid PC. For some really basic file sharing between 2 middle-age adults and with minimal support + maximum performance, which one would be better for them: NFS or SMB?
  11. I am running a SAMBA SMB NAS, but as I don't want my hdd or pi running all the time, I want to put them to sleep and wake em up via local network. Is there any way to do so? My Router is connected to everything and runs all the time, so I can communicate to anydevice at anytime via phone/laptop/pc
  12. Hi i have make an omv nas and smb share and i have trouble mounting it on mac os. this problem do not happen on windows and ubuntu. behavior on mac os it keep timing out when connecting to smb share this is also a problem with ubuntu server and samba
  13. Besides the more proper UI, I have no clue why people use plex instead of watching movies from an SMB share. I have searched and couldn't find an answer. Streaming videos from my server to my phone with SMB and VLC mobile works just fine. And isn't plex gpu intensive? So I ask. Why?
  14. TLDR Windows 10 client can't connect to SMB share, but other devices can, I can ping the server from the win10 machine but can't connect to the share. I get a generic error and need help to understand how to troubleshoot. Hi everyone, Last week I was setting up a TrueNAS just for experimentation and learning something new. While doing so, I create a new share on TrueNAS and made it available to my local network. I was able to connect to it and get it working, but the day after, it stopped working. I can't connect to any network share, both my TrueNAS and my other linux samba share stopped working from my machine. Other devices as a tablet and phone can connect just fine, so I ruled out an issue with the server and focused on the windows 10 client. I tried the most basics fixes that I found online, but nothing worked for me so far. Do you have any advice on how I can troubleshoot the problem? I can ping the server on cmd but when I try to connect from the file explorer I get this generic error. SMBv1 is disabled on both the server and windows and I tried to enable it in both but nothing changed. I'm sure you will need more information to help me with this, but I didn't want to make a wall of text of random info. Just let me know if you require a specific log or screenshot. Thanks in advance. Superluc
  15. I've been running an Unraid Server for ages with my file shares over SMB, it works absolutely fine with Windows but I've found performance is horrible on my M1 Macbook Pro. Both OS's are up to date and connected using Gigabit Ethernet and I have ensured that "Enhanced MacOS Interoperability" is enabled in my Unraid Settings. Raw Throughput seems passable when transferring large files, but there is a delay of about 1 second for every new file, so when transferring large amounts of smaller files such as 15KB XMP files, it takes forever to do so. Have been trying to figure this out for months to no avail, please help!
  16. TrueNAS scale SMB basics help Hi All Posted this a few days ago in https://www.truenas.com/community/forums/operation/ but did not get any response so figured i would try here as well I'm new to TrueNAS Scale and need help getting started. lets start from the beginning. I have a Dell Optiplex 7040 i5-6500 12GB RAM, 256GiB SanDisk_X400_M.2 and 2 x 500 GiB Seagate ST500LM021 My objective is simple I want to use TrueNAS scale as a file share for home, I have 4 users including myself. Using a mix of Windows 10 Pro, Windows 11 Pro and Ubuntu 20.04 PCs . I read the instructions https://www.truenas.com/docs/scale/ and looked for info on this forum and other locations but still cant get SMB working correctly. Here is what i have done so far. Installed TrueNAS-SCALE-22.02-RC.2 default install on 256GiB M.2 drive Logged in and went to Storage and created a mirrored pool called storage with both 500GiB drives ACL Mode POSIX Added Data set to storage called data (share type SMB) Created local group called home_users (Samba Auth enabled) I plan on adding other family members to the group Created a local user called martin (Auxiliary Group home_users, /nonexistent, Shell Bash, Samba Auth on) Added SMB share called data /mnt/storage/data In Storage for Dataset:/mnt/storage/data edit ACL added User martin and groups martin and home_users all with full Control rebooted for good measure. OK here is where I start getting lost my assumption is i should be able to access the share from my Windows PC at this point. when i go to \\truenas\storage\data from my main Windows 11 PC i do get prompted for user and password as expected but it fails with Network Error Windows Cannot access \\truenas\storage\data, I also tried \\truenas.local\storage\data, \\192.168.2.98\storage\data and \\192.168.2.98.local\storage\data same result I tested the same with Windows 10 PC and with my Ubuntu desktop via smb://truenas/storage/data i get prompted for credentials and same result. so I went to system settings - shell and checked root@truenas[~]# ls /mnt storage root@truenas[~]# ls /mnt/storage data root@truenas[~]# ls /mnt/storage/data root@truenas[~]# ls -al /mnt/storage/data total 1 drwxrwx--- 2 root root 2 Feb 13 09:22 . drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 3 Feb 13 09:22 .. root@truenas[~]# I can see that the ACL will not work as is so i guess i missed something in my steps. Now i have no data on this TrueNAS so i have no issue wiping and starting over so if anyone has some insights to point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.
  17. Hello! I’ve got a Raspberry Pi 4 which is configured as an SMB file server. It hosts my Plex Media library and personal documents I don’t want in the cloud. Its used by Windows, macOS, and iOS devices. It’s been working good so far however today I attempted to put a 22GB file and ran into the file size limit for exFAT (16GB). So with that in mind I know there are multiple other Linux file systems. Is there any file system that will give me read/write compatibility with macOS, iOS, and Windows 10 with a larger file size limit?
  18. Hello. Im trying to create an SMB share for multiple users in truenas. So i have 2 users, A and B, and created a group called AB. I then created a dataset and then shared it via SMB called windows backup. So i set the ACL permissions to restricted, and deleted the owner@ portion, changed the group to AB and applied it. i then set full control under permissions. Now, as A, i try to map the network drive, no dice. As B, i map it on an ipad and it works completely fine, able to copy paste etc. Windows keeps telling me i dont have permissions despite being part of the group. Now, if i set A as the owner, A can access the share, add and remove their own files, but cannot see anything B has added, whereas B can add remove files that A or B added. am i doing something wrong? i dont understand why B has no issues with permissions/ access whereas A is having so many issues. both accounts were set up identically.
  19. Hi! I have install Windows Server 2019 and I can share my folder successfully using smb. But it is just for my computers that is on the same network with my server. I wanted to ask is there any solution to share my files and folders over the internet using smb. If not, are there other file sharing services or operating system that I can try and share the files and folders over the internet. I really need your help TQ!
  20. I wanted to set up a firewall on my router or even dns to block apples update servers. I keep pressing cancel on updates and postponing updates yet when I woke up it had taken an update and I lose my jailbreak. So how do I block apple update servers on a router and how do I find the ip addressed to block. Would I use a network sniffer?
  21. This is something that I stumbled upon while trying to transfer files between two laptops with an Ethernet cable. So I configured the ethernet adapters to have different IPs but be within the same subnet; that is PC 1 : 192.168.1.1 PC2 : 192.168.1.2 Subnet ( same for both) : 255.255.255.0 And then after started copying files after tweaking some drive sharing settings and security settings in windows. So these two PCs can communicate through the ethernet cable. But if I turn on the wifi adapters on both laptops, they can communicate through my home wifi too. My router uses DHCP in the range 192.168.0.xxx so from my understanding, an IP conflict isn't supposed to happen. Now if I pause the copying while the wifi adapters are off, and then turn the wifi adapters on, and then resume copying files, the speed drops from around 11MBps ( yes I have a 10 year old laptop with a 100Mbps ethernet adapter) to about 5MBps, which is around the maximum speed of the wifi adapters on one of the laptops. This happens when the ethernet cable is plugged in, and the wifi adapters are turned on, and the laptops can communicate through both ethernet and my home wifi lan. Anyone know why windows chooses the slower link. Is there something I'm missing here?
  22. I've had a NAS running windows server for a while now and initially speeds were fine (maxing out the 1gb/s when transfering large files) but now for some reason when copying a file to the NAS it sits at almost exactly 100mb/s (10-12MB/s) and won't transfer any faster (both devices are on the same LAN and using iperf the link speed is ~800-900mb/s) Both drives should easily be capable of faster speeds especially for large files, copying the same file from the HDD it's on to the ssd in the same machine copies at ~60-70MB/s and the NAS can copy that file at over 600MB/s.. any ideas? Edit: and for anyone wondering even copying from the NVMe SSD in the laptop to the NAS is still the same speed.
  23. I have a Raspberry Pi 3B+ with Samba installed. How do I make partitions/drives assigned to a different SMB user? I want everyone in my household to have their own 25GB share with privacy. What do I put in smb.conf to make this work?
  24. How do I make my existing SMB server to an FTP site? I don’t need this to be forwarded in any way.
  25. I'm trying to record footage from my Mac to an smb network share on my Windows PC (the share points to a hard drive) directly using OBS. The resulting video is extremely choppy and I suspect it has to do with the transfer rate. My PC features 2.5Gb/s LAN and I tried 1Gb/s LAN as well as WiFi 6 on my Mac. For reference, I am trying to record really high quality footage (1440p, 120 FPS, 130Mb/s bitrate). Recording on my Mac's internal storage works perfectly fine, so is there some way to automatically transfer my video files over the network when they finish, or maybe use my internal drive as cache? Or record to the network drive using some other protocol? One more thing I should mention is that I'm using NDI. So the layout is basically an NDI stream from my gaming PC to my Mac, the Mac does the encoding, and I want to send the footage back to my gaming PC's large hard drive.
