Hey guys, long time ago in terms of videos of LTT I watched Linus creating (well, Jake was the one who did that) his own server with some kind of smart home app that was able to receive input from basicaly any smart home hub/appand then provide input to different smart hub/app. I spent hours trying to find this app, I belive it took place in Linuses old house. Basically what I am looking for if anyone can tell me if that is possible or not. I have bunch of smart items in my home but using multiple apps to controll those. I have xiaomi where I am forces to use Xiaomi home, I have LG, I have Hue lights etc. Now I am moving houses and I plan to do this right. I belive there is a software I can install that will be able to set communication betweek theese devices. Yes everything new will be Matter enabled but I need to make the old stuff work. I preffer something I can install on either some kind of small server, tiny desktop, synology etc. Thanks

Hello, I was planning to mod my pc, to power it on and off using a smart home device like alexa. I don't want to use wake on lan, since from my experience it's rather unreliable and buggy at times. My plan was to use a relay, which would close the circuit between the two pins, on which the on/off switch is positioned. I was thinking about something like this. I would then try to power the relay using one of the onboard usbs, since they should be able to provide enough power, while the computer is shut down. Now my question is, since I am not that familiar with electronics, if this would even work? can i use the relay to close and open the circuit between the two power pins ? would the usb power be enough ? is there any other power source in my pc that i could use ? i really dont want to power it from an external power source.

So basically, I have recently flashed a tuya smart wall plug and now want to control it with Homebridge over MQTT with the Mqttthing plugin. I also created a Mosquitto MQTT server on an Raspberry Pi 4B, but it just won't work. What's not working is most likely the MQTT server because I can't connect to it with MQTT Explorer. Thank you in advance. Hey! I'm just posting this here to ask for some help and advice, since I might have a problem. So, full transparency, I was clicking on a spicy link in someone's link tree account, and all the smart lights hooked up in my home immediately blinked simultaneously. I tapped the link again to test, and it happened again. Have I just given someone access to my smart home environment? Introduces some kind of virus? Any idea what this could be? The url for the link goes to a .xn--cm-jbc domain. Any help would be appreciated.

"I am currently experiencing persistent issues with my Netgear R7000 router. To address these problems, I am looking for a new router that falls within a budget of around $250. The ideal router should support a large number of devices, including smart home devices like Amazon's Alexa and smart lights, as well as handle streaming activities seamlessly. My internet connection is provided by Verizon Fios with 1gb speed, and I use the Verizon CR1000A modem. On average, I have anywhere between 20 to 40 devices connected to the network, depending on whether I have guests over or not. My current Netgear R7000 is configured as an access point with Dynamic DNS turned off to allow the modem to assign IP addresses. However, despite trying various settings, the internet keeps cutting out on this router. Interestingly, my desktop, which is directly connected to the Verizon Router/Modem combo, experiences no such issues. Given the common issues associated with the Netgear R7000, I have decided to upgrade to a more suitable router. Any recommendations for a reliable router that meets my requirements would be greatly appreciated."

Summary The good: voice detection is competitive with voice assistants from Nest and Amazon The bad: still a rough experience, DIY, lots of steps Only costs $35 to $50 depending on the ESP-32 box chosen but also needs the backend "inference server" code running on a PC somewhere in your home Quotes My thoughts It can't play youtube videos yet (or even just stream the audio). But once that happens Amazon Prime music gets crossed off. Sources https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/05/willow-is-a-faster-self-hosted-diy-voice-assistant-built-on-50-gadgets/

Hi LTT forum! I'm moving into my first home soon and want to get a video doorbell. My problem is, I'm not sure what to get and I'm not sure if I'm missing any major brands. Below are what I know and what is putting me off, would love to hear your thoughts Ring - honestly, we just find them ugly Google - we want to go wired but the new release isn't available in the UK and I don't want to pay full price for the old one when the new will come at some point. At the same time, we want one soon. Eufy - the whole privacy debacle is putting me off Blink - this one I'm not sure of. My mother has the cameras and they don't seem great (I had no input.) Would particularly like to hear experiences with these Arlo - somewhat leaning but the £9.99 subscription for more than 1 camera is ehh Unifi - the cost of doorbell + cloud key (if that's the right name) is too high Am I missing any? What would people recommend?

Hello everybody I have a slight issue with my current home automation setup (which is using Google Home) and i wondered if by switching ecosystem it might be solved. The issues is this: i have various triggers that turn off and on various devices (smart plugs and smart lights). Some of these triggers are position based, others time base. The problem is that Google Home doesn't allow the triggers to cross-reference each other: for example, i have a certain light come on at sunset. Then if a smartphone leaves the house, the Home mode gets turned to "away" and the light gets turned off. All fine and cool. But if the smartphone leaves the house and doesn't return before the set time for the other trigger, the trigger happens regardless...so even if the scenario is "away", the light still turns on. I think this is incredibly dumb programming by Google, and I honestly hope I'm just clueless and there's actually a setting to prevent this from happening. If there's not...does any of you folks use Samsung Smarthings or Alexa as a "smart-home ecosystem" and know if these two allow "triggers to talk to each-other"? Or if they have a hierarchy, meaning if a "higher grade" trigger is on (home mode away) all the others get disabled? If yes, i would gladly switchover all my smart-home stuff to such ecosystem (all devices should be compatible). Thanks anybody in advance.

Does anyone know if Jasco/Enbrighten/GE smart switches work with a Phillips Hue Hub? I have heard conflicting information about this and the ZigBee spec seems to be very flimsy when it comes to compatibility. As well as Phillips Hue hubs seeming to be selective with what they will work with.

Hello everybody, I have a question about home assistant and zwave. I am going to get a home server, that will be in my basement. On this server I want to have home assistant installed in Unraid. All my devices will be upstairs. I don‘t think that the connection will go through all the walls, even, if I use a high quality zwave stick like the one from Aeotec. Am I right? And what alternatives do I have? Is there a zwave hub, this is compatible to home assistant and connects to it over the Wifi-network? And is that sure, if my wifi-network crashes? I am very unexperienced in smart home stuff, so please don‘t treat me too hard Greetings, Thecrafterja from GER

Hi everyone Here's my problem: I've got a Mac hooked up inside a cabinet, connected to external monitor and stuff. To prevent overheating, i fitted the cabinet with a couple of Noctua fans. Right now i turn them on by flicking a switch, but it would be real nice to automate the entire thing. Since I've got them hooked up to an external power brick, a smart plug seemed to me as the cleanest and easiest option. Those are plentiful and cheap on the market, my problem comes with the "software piece" that should trigger the plug whenever the Mac is awake basically (the goal is to stop the fans by cutting the power when the Mac goes to sleep or is turned off) I thought of two options: - Homekit, although i have no idea if there's a trigger "mac is awake" available in it and i have no spare device to set as an hub (i had heard you could do away with the hub under some circumstances) - IFTTT, although again, i couldn't figure out a way to have an app/script running on the Mac to act as a trigger. I'm open to any other automation software that could detect the Mac's awake status and trigger the plug...I haven't mentioned Alexa/Google cause voice control is out of the question for me, i might as well tap the switch manually at that point. If anybody could help me, it would be much appreciated! Thanks everybody

Hi everybody I'm looking to automate a smart home action on my mac, using an homekit compatible power plug + the shortcuts app in Monterey (or Automator if it's better, idk). The idea would be that whenever the Macbook is awake, the trigger activates the smart plug. When the Mac goes to sleep or is turned off, the smart plug shuts off, cutting power. [The smart plug is used with a universal 12V power adapter to power a fan inside the cabinet that ensures that part of the computer setup is cooled). I've looked left right and center into the new Shortcuts app and I honestly couldn't find any way to use the Mac's "awake status" as a trigger for a shortcut. It's simply not possible to do this or I missed something? Is it something that can be done with Automator perhaps? Note: the trigger should be automatic. Right now i simply flick a physical switch near the monitor to start the fan, so having a software button on the mac, use siri or something not automatic would be pointless...if i've got to turn it on myself, i might as well stick with the current setup. Thanks everybody for the help!

Hey guys, I really do not know if this is the right sub-forum...but I hope the community can help me out. I use a Google Nest Doorbell directly in Google Home (without the NEST-App). Is there any moderatly easy way to use the motion detect of that camera to turn on lights? At the moment I use a Smart Lightswitch integrated in the SmartLife app. I could also use a Shelly if that would change anything. I've googled for some guides but most of them are not up to date and I could not get it to work. Or some steps were missing in between... Thanks for your help guys&gals, Max

Hi everyone. I wanted to create a place where we could discuss helping Linus with automating his new house. As LTT recently posted a video giving us a tour of his new place and explaining what he would like to get done. I have a few suggestions myself, as I used to be a smart home integrator professionally.

We recently bought a "Nest Hello" doorbell to go along with our two google home minis, Nest thermostat, a few smartplugs and most importantly our Lenovo google home 10 inch display. In theory we should be able to stream the feed from the camera on the doorbell to the Lenovo display but whenever we try google assitant says "Nest is unavailable right now". We can see the feed through the home app and the nest app just fine however. I tried unlinking the thermostat and re-linking it and that didnt work. Im just at a dead end and cant figure this out.

Hi everybody, first let me say something: I don‘t want to start this discussion like it has been done in hundreds of other postings. I want to refer this discussion to my room. So, my thoughts so far: I‘m the tech savy guy in my family. So I want to make our dumb house smart. My room will be the test-area and template. I will use Home Assistant on a Raspberrypi. It could be important, that I am from Germany, for product availibilty etc. Here is a list of things, I plan to use: - thermostat - smart switch for my top light - two smart bulbs for another lamp - window sensors for two windows - temperature sensor, light sensor and movement sensor - energy monitor plug The bold marked things are the things I want to start with. So my first thoughts were: I will use Zwave because it does not use the 2.4Ghz frequenzy and seems to have more high quality devices available. But the devices tend to be more expensive than Zigebee devices, and there is also a limit for 231 devices per Zwave network. That could going to be a problem, but right now, I do not have the experience to estimate that. Also I am not able to find any ZWave light bulb, that has an E14 socket, as I need it. I know there are adapters for E14 to E27, but in general, it seems to me, that there are not many different products available for Zwave. What‘s your opinion about that? I know, that I can use Zigbee and Zwave later on together with Home Assistant, but at the beginning, it is quiet expensive to buy two high quality sticks. Maybe here are some German experts that can also help me with this question, which belongs also to this topic: We have switches from BuschJaeger in our house. I know that there are Zwave certified smart switches from TechniSat, that are compatible with this kind of switches, but how do the existing switches work with something like a Fibaro Single Switch 2? Out of my perspective, that is also an argument for Zwave. I know, that‘s lots of information in my “German English“, but I hope to find help here. Thank you for reading this. Maybe you have some hints for me. Greetings from Germany, Thecrafterja

Recently I have really gotten into smart devices e.i. Wyze switches, "outlets", bulbs cameras etc. The question is, what's the best way to have all of these devices connected with out them taking up all my bandwidth? Do I connect them all to a separate Wireless router? Should I upgrade my router to a wifi6 router? Should I abandon Wyze and go with a different brand that connects to its own hub?

Summary Arlo, maker of security products including cameras, announced this week that eight of their products and three of their services will lose partial or full support as soon as April 1, 2023. Some of these products were manufactured as late as Dec 2019 (1) and could cost upwards of $480 (2). Quotes (1) My thoughts Arlo is giving us yet another example of why self hosting and local storage is the way to go. Customers have bought these products less then three years ago with the expectation for security updates, seven days of free cloud storage, and more. Today, Arlo pulled the rug out from under these customers by planning to remove large portions of these features. Although the products still maintain some functionality, the degraded experience of such expensive products so soon is disappointing. Users who own these products may want to look into alternatives if they are worried about the security implications of this announcement. Hi guys, I have started searching for some information about the microcontrollers/controllers with which I can develop my own controller and the SMART-house. It is needed for my research work. I am new to this, and it is hard for me to find the necessary information. I have found that such controllers as Arduino, Raspberry PI, ESP32, etc can be used. However, how can I find the model of the controller which can suit my requirements? They are the following: 2-stage building with a garage (so it is +-400 sq.m.) with some number of SMART devices that are responsible for security (cameras, fire alarm, etc), temperature control, radiators, leakage control, opening/closing control, etc. I am interested in the hardware area at first. Any advices, links to the resources, researches, and articles with a similar topic will be really appreciated. PS: sorry for my not clear English (just in case) Thank you in advance.

Hello everybody ! First things first, I'm a new user from Switzerland, currently working to get my Master degree in law and economics. I'm part of a team of students working on a project for a class. We have to analyse whether or not Logitech should enter the smarthomes business and, eventually, how. This project require to go outside, get insights and opinions from users and the different potential stakeholders. As you all know, we are going through an difficult crisis and we all have to stay home. The thing is, our project is not cancelled and we still have to get those insights using different ways to get there. I've been watching Linus content for a long time now, as I'm very interested in tech in general so I hoped you could answer a couple questions or give your opinion. Every kind of answers would be incredibely usefull, even if you don't care at all about smarthomes systems ! 1) Are you interested in smarthomes equipement ? Do you think Logitech has a card to play in that sector ? 2) Would you consider paying for such equipement ? For what kind of product (Lightbulbs, dorbells, security cameras, energy controlling hub, conected soundsystem...) 3) Would you be interested by "bundles" built around particular thematics (Energy saving, security...) ? What if it could reduce your insurance or energy bill ? If you could indicate the country you are from if you answer those questions it would be wonderful ! I hope you all stay healthy and have a nice day, even during those difficults times. Stay strong ! Ludovic Barcellona

Help! I plan to add some very cheap tablets around my house as a sort of smart home controller on the wall, however all the cheap tablets I've found so far have had TERRIBLE viewing angles. So basically I'd love to hear from you about some cheap tablets that have moderately good to great viewing angles. Ideally I'd like to spend $100ish, and I'm totally okay with a no-name brand on eBay or something. This will literally just be used to touch buttons, so it doesn't need to be powerful. I would be open to the idea of used as well. Android would be the ideal operating system since there are nice automation apps to help with the smart home idea, but I'll take whatever suggestions you got. Thanks!

Hey, I have an extraordinary idea, imagine if you have your smart bulbs in your house, and you have your smart security system, and when the alarm gets triggered all the lights of the house turns red and at a 100 percent like a submarine and the alarms sounds. well, I tried to do it with shortcuts but when I was done I activated the shortcut and everything was working well, then I exited the app and locked my iPad and it stops. any suggestions? I am using Philips hue and HomeKit with a HomePod and an Aqara security system.

Hey everyone I'm in the process of segregating my IOT smart home devices onto their own network. These are mostly the cheaper devices which I assume have less security behind them like sonoff smart switches, broadlink minis, b-hyve smart sprinklers, kogan kettles etc and because this network is only 2.4ghz, I've chucked my Ring doorbell camera on there as well. My question is, should I be including my Amazon echos in this? I have presumed up to this point that they likely have better security than my cheaper devices so I've let them sit on my main 5ghz network along with my laptop and phone but should I be creating a separate 5ghz network purely for them to isolate them from the main network or am i being a bit paranoid here? Cheers
