  1. I am looking for a cheap 400watt SFX power supply for my NAS. I am trying to stay below $80 USD if possible. All the models I know of are $120+. Are there any good lesser known budget brands that make decent psu's? Note: dont need modular
  2. Hi I am working on a small form factor PC that i want to use as a ROON server on Ubuntu, the PC has a gigabyte z590I mini itx motherboard and an intel core i5 11400F CPU, as well as a random GTX 660 for a display output, it posts fine and seemed to be working well until i tried to install ubuntu, it got into GRUB without any issues but then froze and completely stopped responding to any inputs when i tried to click the try or install ubuntu option, after fiddling in the BIOS for ages and changing lots of things i manages to get it not to freeze when i tried to boot into ubuntu, instead it would start loading into ubuntu and then have a kernel panic and freezing completley, this happens whatever i do, even in safe grapgics mode esc esc and still happened on xubuntu and fedora linux when i decided to try those, i know that it isnt the bootable USB because the USB works perfectly on my other computer and boots perfectly. As a last resort a tried to install windows and to my surprise it worked perfectly and installed with no issues. I have tried secure boot and fiddling with other bios settings but this gigabyete BIOS is so compliacted that i am struggling to get anything done. I really need help from someone who knows more about Linux than me because i am completely out of ideas I have attached the kernel panic screen that i get when i manage to boot into the USB Thanks in advance Lukas
  3. There hasn't been much if any improvement at all in this space in the past 5 years. SFX power supplies are still $100+ for anything decent. There's a lack of truly compact cases (with decent airflow) under $100. The fundamentals issues still exist: GPU's/CPU's in the desktop market demanding more power. Enthusiasts who spend $1000+ on a machine want the best performance possible. People don't want to pay more for less. Lack of coordination between manufacturers. Companies like Apple, MS and Sony can get powerful efficient yet small machines because they buy in bulk, sell in bulk and they pick parts that work well together. But a base of niche consumers buying different products from different companies won't get that bulk savings. I'd expect modest improvement, maybe somewhat faster in improvement than the last 5 years, but I'd still temper my expectations.
  4. Budget (including currency): $500 willing to go a little over if need be. Country: America Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: It will be used for minecraft a lot, might be used for video editing, and would like to be able to play more modern games if I want. Other details: I plan on using the case, which is an old office type dell I think, and the 435 watt power supply to build an entry level PC with an Ryzen 7 5700 G and use the integrated graphics, or maybe get a CPU that is cheaper ,has the same performance (not necessary graphics wise, but I would like to have integrated so I can get the GPU when I have the money), and use a half Hight, half length card, as that is all that will fit. If you need/want more details, ask specifically what you want opt know.
  5. Budget (including currency): ~AUD$3000 Country: Australia Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Dev work (VS, VS Code, Power Apps, Power Automate) AI Model Training Simple Video creation, mainly screen recording with audio Lots of Teams, screen sharing and multi-person video Casual gaming every now and again Accessories: Monitor(s): 2xDell S2722QC Audio: PreSonos AudioBox USB96, Mic AT2020, Speakers Edifier R1280Ts Streamdeck2 Other details: Hey guys, my dad's looking to build a new desktop pc to mostly replace his Microsoft Surface Book 3 (i7, dedicated graphics). I helped him spec out something (https://au.pcpartpicker.com/user/coatsyaus/saved/#view=WP4ZQ7), as I watch lots of reviews and stuff, but he still knows what I'm talking about and is very technical. He'd love to keep the form factor as small if possible, preferring to mount it to the underside of his desk, but will go a little larger if that's a better option, as I told him the size he's looking at has little room for expandability. Is this a decent build or would you change anything?
  6. Hey All, I know there is probably a thread that addresses this already, but I couldn't find it. I recently was introduce to the "P-ATX V2" SFF Case and have been entertaining the idea of moving my current 5900x/3070 set up into something of the sort. I have done a little research and have found that the main problem with this idea are the CPU temps and finding an adequate cooler to contain them. I currently have my 5900x clocked to 4.2GHz @ 1.096v with temps of around 40C idle and 65C at MAX load using a 240mm AIO. If I were to switch to a SFF case I would either need to switch to a 120mm rad or a low-profile air cooler (such as an NH-L9a or CRYORIG C7) due to CPU clearance and general space availability. I was hoping to get some guidance on which you guys think would be the best route as to not cook my CPU, any advice/help would be appreciated
  7. Halo Infinite and Battlefield 2042 are here, and after several years of faithful service, the i7-4770 and 1050Ti in my office-PC-turned-gaming-PC is starting to show its age pretty badly. I'm finally going to build myself a new up-to-date gaming PC, but I'm having some trouble choosing a motherboard. I live in a hot climate, so even ignoring the minor performance differences, I've decided I'm definitely going AMD over Intel for thermal reasons alone. Thing is, I also have a pretty small living space and desk space (my desk is only 19" deep) so I'm trying to keep my build small, avoiding full-size ATX motherboards and only looking at micro-ATX, mini-DTX, and mini-ITX boards. The practical differences between X570 and B550 are a whole other rabbit hole (if anyone has thoughts on whether X570 is worth it or not, I'd love to hear it!) but the main difference between the form factors other than physical size is that micro-ATX seems to be the only one of the three sizes to offer any boards with more than a single PCIe slot, x16 or otherwise. Something about that is extremely off-putting to me. I use two PCIe slots on my current PC, but then again, that's only because it's an old office PC that doesn't have built-in WiFi like every decent gaming motherboard now does. I can't think of anything I would need a second slot for on a modern full-featured board, but I would much rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it. So this is equal parts opinion poll and survey: How many PCIe slots do you use on your gaming rig? Is only having one slot a severe restriction, even on a high-end motherboard with built-in networking and NVMe slots? And, as a bonus question if you feel like answering, because it's another thing I've been struggling with, is X570 worth choosing over B550 for a smaller build?
  8. I'm a programmer and a casual gamer and i want to buy a new keyboard for myself , i found the logitech G915 TKL tactile on sale for 150€, is it a good buy? is there any other recommendation for kerboard and which type of switch is most suited for me. Thank you.
  9. I want to build a small form factor workstation, I'm buying used parts so there's a wide range of parts I'm willing to use so long as they're cheap enough. This is the "largest" extent of my plan, https://pcpartpicker.com/user/Boredome_________/saved/#view=9NPkJx Threadripper 3970x or better, eatx gigabyte or MSI, Quadro p4000 in a Lian Li O11 dynamic mini. What do you think of this plan? Budget (including currency): 2600 Country: usa Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: autocad, inventor, illustrator, VM, vpn, IPS, systems modelling Other details I have a Dell t5500 tower from which I'm pulling the Quadro p4000
  10. [Solved] Update: Put a much more powerful 120mm fan in replacing the SP100 that was there. Temps have dropped 30 degrees. So I am having some temperature problems in my small form factor build sleeper PC build. (Photos below) To give an idea of the dimensions the entire case is the same footprint exactly as a mATX motherboard. Specs: Ryzen 5600X (stock cooler) MSI RTX 3060 16 GB 3600hz memory 750 watt corsair SFX PSU Pictures below are old. The changes are the PSU is upside-down with a fan mounted outside the case to pull air through then the PSU fan is not on. (not the best idea but limited options) The cables around the CPU are moved to make it more clear over there. Other difference is the GPU is now a 3060 instead of the pictured 770TI. The only ventilation is the entire front and that tiny slit you can see pictured in the back. As well as the GPU and PSU vents. 120mm Fan in the front pulls air in. Now for the issues... Running Cinebench R23 for 10 minutes puts me at 95 degrees or close to it. Any games that push the CPU at all will get me 95 as well. After messing around with some small fans and not making much progress I am thinking about getting a 120mm AIO for where the 120mm fan is. I would need to find a thin AIO as there is not much space. Does anyone have a suggestion for a thin radiator AIO or an entirely different solution. ---------------- GPU temperatures are fine (for now). Pretty much has its own section down there where it can pull air in the front and blow it out the back.
  11. Hello everyone! Below is my finally finished build (been working on it for the last 6 months or so - kind of a covid project) It's all new parts other than the case. Specs: Ryzen 5 3600 ASUS TUF B450M Gaming Micro ATX Motherboard 16GB HyperX DDR4 2666MHZ RAM Seasonic 450 Watt SFX Gold Power Supply AMD Wraith Spire CPU Cooler 256 GB Kingston NVME Hard Drive 1 TB 7200 RPM Storage Hard Drive Nvidia GTX 1650 4 GB SFF Video Card Windows 10 Home The finished product All built in a HP S5000 Small Form Factor Case from 2010 What I did: Gutted the original power supply. Cut off the side for airflow to the GPU (see pic). Made a pass through for the power cable to go to the relocated power supply. Added a Noctua Chromax fan where the original power supply had one. Relocated the power supply inside of the case where the intake fan was originally. Mounted the SFF power supply where the intake fan was originally. Used the original fan mount with 4 nuts as standoffs for the Power supply mounting points. It looks like it belongs there..lol Modded the original DVD tray for a 1 TB Hard Drive - built a new mount for the Hard Drive that fit where the DVD drive went. Swapped out the original power LED for a red one. Cut up an expansion port cover, painted, and then installed it on a unused knock out on the back for improved airflow. Cut out a section of the bottom front of the front bezel for better airflow. it is hidden behind the bottom part of the bezel. I kept the original stickers on the front of the bezel (the AMD, Nvidia, and the Windows 7 ones) I added new Ryzen, Geforce, and Windows 10 stickers to the rear of the case by the power supply cable power conection. It's funny, the new ones mirror the old ones - they are just 10 years newer. lol again Finally, I hid all of the cables. Final thoughts The USB ports and the SD card reader work on the front bezel. Fallout 76 (I know, but its much better now..lol) averages right at 60 FPS at 1080P with most everything cranked up. It averages 56 FPS at 1080P (with most everything turned up) in the Rise of the Tomb raider demo The system ran a 3926 on Time Spy It did jump up to 95 C on the Prime95 torture test but it mostly stayed in the 80's. It stays in the 60's during regular gaming. All in all, I would say that's a pretty big jump over an AMD system from 2011
  12. Anyone know of cases with this layout: https://www.sfftec.com/product-page/z-case-p50-v1-1 (more common SFF layouts I've seen either wrap-around, placing motherboard and GPU back-to-back (like Dan Cases A4: https://www.dan-cases.com/dana4.php ), or flat but opposite facing (so must be a tower, really - or raised up off the table at least) like the Zaber Sentry http://zaber.com.pl/sentry/ - CPU facing one side, CPU facing the other) What I'm really dreaming of is a fairly flat & wide custom build - something like the P50 but with a 2x120 or 2x140 radiator outside the case (on the "front" (relocate the power button to somewhere else) so it's a flat layout, rectangular, maybe 2/3rds+1/3rd or half/half componentry and radiator). Ideally, I'd love to be able to have this laying flat (componentry facing to the sky) as, say, a coffee table surface - or upright (like the P50 is shown) maybe wall-mounted with enough distance to intake air behind it through the fans pushing out through the radiator...
  13. So here we are again... Six or so months ago, I finished my first small form factor build; a gaming rig inside an Dreamcast shell. It was an...interesting learning curve, with non-standard components I wasn't used to using, and a LOT of dremel work. But obviously now I have to go bigger and better, and having done SFF, I've got to try something else I've not done....enter water cooling THE PLAN Of course, the case. We've got the classic...the one...the only...the FAT PS2. Roughly 3.8L in size. The last system was Intel based, so for that reason alone I'm going to make this an AMD build. The graphics card will hopefully be more powerful, I'm looking at a 1080, or a 2060S. Ram, 16Gb. That's an easy one. Storange size unknown, but it'll be M.2. Watercooling, obviously...I'd like the CPU and GPU both to be in the loop if at all feasible. As with the Dreamcast, from the front I want it to be as sleeper as possible. only the keen eye should be able to tell what's inside...
  14. I've been watching build videos about them for a couple months, but I was thinking... why would I need it? Because there could be the argument of portability, which IMO isn't valid for two reasons: You still gotta move the monitor, desk, chair, peripherals, etc. SFF is expensive, I highly doubt someone would want to carry them as a laptop. What's left after that? Perhaps the simple hobby / challenge of building something ever so small could be fun, is that it?
  15. I am planning on my next build to be a SFF Gaming pc with a Ryzen 5 5600x and a RX 6700xt, unfortunately according to case i want to use, the Lian Li A4-H2O, only fits an 322mm long gpu. BUT, the variant of the rx 6700xt i have chosen for its performance and cooling does not fit. I was wondering if any people out there that own or have worked with this case know if the 322mm limit is super strict, or if it has even the smallest of space to fit one more millimeter.
  16. After 6 months of owning my first rig, I realized it wasn't using the full protentional of the ram I got due to my fault on finding compatible options. It crashes when OC to max speed in BIOS with XMP. The mobo specs only officially supports the OC speed in single channel 16gb as opposed to the full 32gb dual channel. I'm looking to replace the case and motherboard in the very near future to change the form factor and make use of the memory capabilities. Honestly I've been looking for a while but am struggling to find a compatible mobo without also upgrading the cpu. These are my current specs: Mobo: Z590 AORUS PRO AX with specs here: https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/Z590-AORUS-PRO-AX-rev-10/sp#sp Memory: 2x16gb TEAM GROUP XTREEM ARGB DDR4 4000Mhz as listed in specs here: https://www.teamgroupinc.com/en/product/xtreem-argb-ddr4 Gpu: NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX™ 3090 - EVGA FTW3 ULTRA GAMING Cpu: 10900K Psu: NZXT C1000 Gold Case: NZXT H510 Storage: Single M.2 (i know the mobo has a crazy amount of options just never used them) Cooling: Kraken X63 RGB Future build specs requirements by order of importance: 1. Reduce size of case dramatically | Preserve GPU 2. Preserve current CPU and RAM at max rated dual channel speed 3. Preserve current cooling 4. Preserve Psu Fr Fr I'm open to suggestions, I'm down if there's any mobo out there that supports the OC RAM speed + 10th gen i9 even if it isn't mini ITX so long as the case is smaller than the H510 midtower. The plan is to move to Mexico without bringing a bulky flashy pc that yells gamer/big bucks.
  17. I want to build a small form factor PC to fit IN my entertainment center I recently picked up an old dell Optiplex 780 and that’s about the size PC I’m looking to make, but it needs to be intel, with an nvidia graphics card, and capable of running emulation from PS3 back, preferably PS4 as well (futureproofing), my pockets aren’t bottomless but right now I just am looking for parts so I can build over time if it’s ridiculous, My main gaming PC is the baseline so i7 or better, gtx 1060 6gb or better, 16gb ddr4 ram(2x8)
  18. Small Form Factor PC’s can be somewhat powerful and very small nowadays, but there are always tradeoffs. They're tough to build in, hard to plan, often limit cooling, and are hard to silence. These tips are based on my experience with a Fractal Design Node 202 Case for ~2 years; this isn't comprehensive and I'm no expert, but I never found all these things together when I went looking, so I decided to put this together. This is also my first post besides bricking a motherboard with bad cooling (See Cooling>Ducting for what I’ve learned, I stress tested my new setup A LOT and found the culprit). Planning General Modding Cooling
  19. Budget (including currency): $120 usd, the cheaper the better. Country: USA Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Playing lighter games at 60FPS or good enough. Other details: I like the Idea of something smallish and semi-portable with a handle using the parts that I have in storage, and I am also open to home made solutions or Ideas. My not in use parts: CPU: Intel Core i5-7400 with cooler. Motherboard: OEM Acer TC-780A (KBL) DTX size . RAM: 16Gb (2x8) of mixed speeds DDR4 that works fine together, one stick is by Kingston and the other is Crucial. GPU: Asus Phoenix GTX 1050 2Gb, not for demanding games. PSU: LiteOn PS-6301-18, basic 300 watt 80plus certified ATX size PSU from an acer TC-780 PC. Drive: None yet, the motherboard does have an M.2 slot, so I might go with an M.2 SSD and something else for storage. Cooling: Two old 92mm case fans and one 1800rpm 120mm case fan. Open to creative Ideas, thanks in advance.
  20. After a great 5 years with my Surface Pro 4, after an inflated battery and a replacement screen that glitches from overuse and overheat, I feel it's time to settle down to a new computer as my work is increasingly at home. I've tried researching through different models of PCs, but honestly, I know what makes a computer, but I have no idea which ram stick brand is reliable or which PSU I should look at, etc. Hoping to find great help here, thanks in advance! Budget (including currency): Between $3000 - $4000 AUD ($1970.51 - $2627.35 USD) Country: Australia Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: No games (maybe Minecraft over quarantine). Mostly to make 2D and 3D animation + other 2d art. Adobe Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Animate, AE, Premiere) ClipStudio EX ToonBoom Harmony Premium + Storyboard Pro Maya, Blender (but with 3D they're not going to be too complicated, think using 3D to make 2D look better + character animation). Really just looking to make animation as fast as possible to scrub through while I'm making it and to export. Also web-browsing if that matters. Other details: Min x2 monitors I use a 24inch 4k cintiq pro wacom tablet (supports USB-C port) and will get a second monitor (would also love recommendations for that, doing animation and film, I'm thinking I'm going to want a 4k monitor that can also turn portrait) I have a keyboard, mouse and speakers that work well for me but might upgrade in the future Bonus but also important Probably a tricky one but I would love to have some form of portability with the computer. It's not a laptop, but just in case I need to work somewhere else (sometimes I like to work with friends), it'd be great to have it at a size that I could just carry it. Also, don't want it to look boring, but not too unicorn vomit/gamer either Examples I like aesthetically (These last two, especially the last one, is incredibly cool to me, but am willing to get argued out of the small form factor if it will make things run better.) Cheers in advance to anyone who reads through this and is able to respond!

  22. Hey guys, i'd like some suggestions. Should I change my case and what case I should buy? I have a mobo ATX form factor, my current case is some Zalman case (don't know exact model), also I have RX480 Gaming X gpu and a BeQuiet Pure Rock CPU cooler. The problem with current case is that it's under the table and it's very poorly ventilated and my GPU gets quite toasty (around 83C while gaming). If I open the side door the GPU temps drop to around 70C under load but it gets louder and dust collects very quickly. My idea would be to take the PC on a desk but the problem with it that it has very little space (225mm height 400mm lenght 400mm width). My current case has one intake 120mm fan and one 120mm exhaust fan at the back and there is no more possibilities to put any others. Maybe someone can suggest some solutions? What case I should get or how I can make my current setup cooler? As I seen the "cube" solution probably won't work since of the height limiting factor. I think sticking with a mid tower would suit better. Maybe you guys can suggest what case I should get? I was thinking about BeQuiet Pure Base 600 but some people tell me it's not worth it. Also how many and what kind of fans I should get with the case? (Silence for the build is priority)
  23. Hey Folks, I'm starting to put aside some cash for what will likely be a Ryzen 5 build in or around October/November and the main thing I'm considering right now is a new case. I have a BeQuiet SilenBase 800 which has frankly been a massive dissapointment after my venerable Antec P182SE. Its had a faulty power button and develops a massively irritating buzzing noise which according to support is due to some kind of harmonic resonance between a component and the chassis.. though its worth noting a friend of mine with the same case and totally different parts also had the exact same issue Anyhow onto the main point, I'm tired of huge cases for a new build I want to go with the small form factor. Enough to fit my GPU/Wifi Card, some SSDs and a HDD. Glass is nice but not needed, and all around grills would be hated (it can get dusty here with 4 cats and 2 dogs :P) So, any thoughts on the matter guys ?:) (And gals ?:) )
  24. this guy made something really cool, so cool that I had to show people this video
  25. Hello again, fellow TechTippians! I'm back with my second build in 2 years, and my first build since moving to the USA. As part of my larger Project: Kingdom series of builds (more on that later), I'm building a HTPC & Couch Gaming PC for use in my living room. For context purposes, the rig will be running on a 4K TV (Model: Sharp N6100U), and in the future will be connected to a (as yet to be determined) wired surround speaker system. The machine's main purposes will be; running games in Steam Big Picture mode (1080p at 60fps), and connecting to our Plex Media Server on the local network (4K & 1080p content playback). THE RIG In the current configuration of parts, the full specs include: CPU Intel i3 7100 (3.9 GHz) (Amazon US) Motherboard MSI B150I Gaming Pro AC Mini-ITX (Amazon US) RAM Corsair Vengeance LPX 8Gb (2 X 4Gb) DDR4 2800MHz (Amazon US) GPU ZOTAC GeForce GTX 1050 Ti Mini (Amazon US) Case Silverstone SG13B (Amazon US) Storage Samsung 850 EVO 500GB 2.5-Inch SATA III SSD (Amazon US) PSU EVGA Supernova G1 650W Power Supply (Amazon US) Cooling Noctua L-Type Premium Quiet CPU Cooler NH-L9x65 (Amazon US) THE BUDGET At a maximum, I'm looking at spending no more than $500-600 on all equipment. I already have the case (due to the dimensions of where the machine is going to be placed, this case was my only real option), and already have the SSD on hand. THE NEXT STEPS So I turn this proposed build over to you, LTT forum goers. I'm open to feedback on components choices, suggestions on ways to improve upon the parts I've already got on hand, and any advice on building / maintaining HTPC rigs in general. That's all for now guys - catch you next time!
