My asus laptop crapped on me, but I want to pull off all my work documents that was in my internal ssd. It is my main drive and has my OS on it as well. The SSD is a Samsung SSD SM951 512 GB MZHPV512HDGL, 512 GB, PCI-E 3.0 x4 I'm not particularly technical with SSD's, but is there a way to salvage all the files and the windows license key on that SSD with as simple as an adapter? I've looked up m.2 USB 3 adapters, but I'm not sure what's the compatibility like nor do I know what would happen if it is compatible and is plugged into another computer. Appreciate the help guys (:

Hi all, Before you ask I haven't just jumped straight on here as soon as it didn't work, I've looked around and the all the solutions presented are having no help. The blunt way to put this is that the BIOS is not detecting the SM951 (512GB NVMe) in my M.2 slot. System in question: CPU: i7-4790K Mobo: Asus Maximus VII Hero (Z97) RAM: 16GB Corsair DDR3 No other drives connected at the moment. Have successfully installed and booted into windows using a WD Green 4TB. Running the latest BIOS, no overclock, fresh install and using the official Windows 10 USB installation stick. I can come to one of 3 conclusions based off my research: 1) My SM951 is dead. (Or perhaps, although it shouldn't be, it's incompatible.) 2) My M.2 slot on the mobo is dead. (It was brought new though) 3) The possibility that the official Win10 USB stick is not GPT partitioned (apparently required) Would love to hear your suggestions on this. Thanks, MJBYTTV

Greetings, I have the AHCI version of the SM951 pci-e SSD (MZHPV512HDGL-00000) in an MSI X99A Godlike Gaming motherboard. In the UEFI setup, the only option I can find related to m.2 settings is in Settings\Advanced\PCI Subsystem Settings: + M.2 Source Link [AUTO] + M.2 PCH Strap [M.2 PCH PCIE] Read (MB/s) || Write (MB/s) seq: 731.6 || 712.0 512K: 663.2 || 690.1 4k: 40.19 || 99.08 4k QD32: 243.1 || 263.3 These numbers, especially the seq, are pitiful compared to the rated specs or benchmarks. Anyone have any ideas on how to rectify 'the suck' and achieve more sane performance? Thanks!

Hi, my name is Marcos Mansilla Kerst and I'm from Argentina. Sorry to bother you, but I'm that desperate. I was "lucky" enough to get my hands on a sm951 nvme drive, which I bought from USA, through Ebay. Once it finally arrived (I had to wait almost a month), I put it in my Rampage V extreme motherboard, but it doesn't show up. Neither in Windows Explorer, Device Manager nor in the bios. I updated the motherboard bios to the latest version, 1701, but it still doesn't show up. I also changed the configuration in the bios, so that the M.2 would have the 4 lanes exclusively and I have the i7 5960x cpu, so it shouldn't be a problem with the lanes. Just in case, I made all the tests taking out my sound card and second video card, but it made no difference. What I want to achieve, after getting it to work, is installing windows 10 on it and use it as my boot device. To that end I loaded the windows 10 installer on a UEFI 3.0USB pendrive, using Rufus to make it GPT. Is there any advice you can give me to solve my problem? Hi all, I've got my self a Z170A PC Mate board running 6600K with the following setup: M.2 - SM951 SSD PCI_E2 - GTX 970 PCI_E4 - TP-Link Wireless Card SATA1 - Hybrid Drive Using ATTO I am able to see the write speed is capped at 685 Mb/s with read at 2Gb/s. Using the BIOS I am unable to confirm if the M.2 drive is using 3.0 which I believe limits the read and write speeds to the drive as there are multiple available settings? SATA 3 & 4 are out of action due to the use of M.2 PCIe slot. From my understanding the motherboard & CPU combination should allow for much faster speeds? Any help in enlightening me with this pickle I am in would be greatly appreciated Thank you for your time, A brand new Linus Media Group Fan! Finally Samsung's releasing what they originally announced an NVMe SM951 M.2 SSD. As this is an OEM part this will probably only be available through RamCity in Australia though. Motherboard support could also be an issue, I've got a Maximus VII Impact with a PCIe 3.0 x4 M.2 slot but I'm not sure if it supports NVMe. Will have to wait to see if ASUS releases a BIOS update. Hi, all. Firstly, let me say that due to an unfortunate (and seriously frustrating!) PSU problem the new system I'm working on isn't in an operable state. That means I won't actually be able to test any suggestions you might have, but I'd like to get some input on things I can test when the replacement PSU arrives. System specs: CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K CPU Cooler: be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 3 Motherboard: ASUS Z170-A LGA1151 (I was running BIOS version 0504, did not get a chance to test on version 0604, but the description for it only says "Improve system stability.") Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4-3200 C16 Primary Storage: 2 x Samsung 128GB SM951 M.2 NVMe SSDs in PCIe RAID 0 Secondary Storage: Western Digital Caviar Green 3TB Video Card: 4GB Asus GTX 970 STRIX Direct CU II Case: Fractal Design Define R5 Titanium Windowless Power Supply: Corsair AX760 80+ Platinum Fully Modular Optical Drive: LG BH10LS38 Blu-ray Writer Operating System: Windows 8.1 64-bit Here are the steps I followed, after creating a bootable Windows 8.1 installation on a USB flash drive: UEFI BIOS: 1. Advanced\Onboard Devices Configuration -> PCI-EX16_3 Bandwidth -> Changed from 'Auto' to 'x4 Mode'. 2. Created a PCIe RAID using EZ Tuning Wizard. After the above, when I went into: Advanced\Intel Rapid Storage Technology\RAID VOLUME INFO ...it displayed that the RAID was bootable: However, it did not appear in the device list in the Boot Menu: (Note that 'InnostorInnostor 1.00' and 'Generic STORAGE DEVICE 9407' entries are the USB drive containing my bootable Windows 8.1 64-bit installation and the flash drive I was capturing screenshots to, respectively) When I subsequently attempted to install Windows (just to check), no devices were shown at the "Where do you want to install Windows?" step. After that, I went into the 'Boot\CSM (Compatability Support Module)' section and changed "Boot from PCI-E/PCI Expansion Devices" to "UEFI driver first", and this made no difference. Prior to me putting the SM951 drives in a RAID 0, they did appear in the boot menu (along with my WD Green drive and Blu-ray drive, which were connected at the time to check the SATA setup): I deleted the RAID volume and booted into the Windows installer. Both the SM951 drives appeared in the "Where do you want to install Windows?" step: (Apologies for the low quality) So, I'm quite baffled by this. The drives are recognised, the RAID was created and the Intel RST info says it's bootable, however it doesn't appear in the boot menu. Did I forget to change a setting? Has anyone got any suggestions at all? Keep in mind that I won't be able to test any suggestions until I get a new PSU in (assuming nothing else was taken out when it failed). Does this m.2 drive fit ? theres total 3 type of m.2 drive correct me if i m wrong.

That's almost 4x some other SSD's. 2) How come the SSD's PCIe port is so small? The PCIe 4x slot on my PC is much larger! I don't get it? Why is the PCIe port on the SSD smaller than the slot on my MOBO? 3) Other criticism 4) Other non-criticism Thank you

VR-Zone Chinese managed to get probably a prototype version of the Samsung's SM951 SSD. They claimed the ssd they got is ACHI version, and there is an alternate version which runs NVMe. According to the photos from VR-Zone Chinese, the controller on the SM951 is an ARM-based PCIe 3.0 MDX controller S4LN058A01-8030, and the NAND Flashes are Samsung's 16nm MLC K9UKGY8SCD-DCK0. They bench tested the ssd, and compare it with the its precessor, Samsung's XP941.

I currently have a computer with a Samsung 840 EVO 1TB SSD running on one of the SATA ports and was planning to upgrade to a 512GB m.2 Samsung SM951 SSD as the motherboard that I have supposedly says that it can support it (The ASUS Maximus VI yes with a six Impact Z87 Motherboard). Everytime I try to boot up the computer, it doesn't even post or let me access the UEFI BIOS. All it does is shut back off and attempt to reboot. Specifically on the "not booting up", the fans on the computer don't even spin up either and of course the displays are all empty. I am wondering why it isn't accepting the drive although it should since the m.2 on the Maximus VI Impact is a PCIe 2.0 slot and the m.2 SM951 SSD is a PCIe 3.0/2.0 plug, or does it have to do with the chipset? I'll just put the specifications of my computer here as well if it helps any. Case: EVGA Hadron Air (Yes the hard on one with the 500W 80 Plus Gold PSU...) PSU: Consult Above. Motherboard: ASUS Maximus VI Impact Z87 m-ITX CPU: Intel Core i5 4670K GPU: GeForce GTX 780Ti Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 1TB SATA III SSD Cooling: Some sort of liquid cooler... didn't bother looking at the company that made it. Samsung SM951 m.2 PCIe 512GB SSD (This is what I'm trying to swap my storage out with) Last note is that I removed the mPCIe Bluetooth and WiFi Module from the mPCIe combo thingy (If you own the Impact Series Motherboards you probably know what I mean) to see if using less PCIe lanes helps since the 4670K is a 16 lane card and... eh... it didn't work. Do not say to get a PCIe to m.2 adapter since the Impact is a m-ITX Motherboard and I'd like to keep my graphics card thank you very much. <-- Important. Hopefully dumping that much information is enough to help someone pinpoint the problem.

So im having trubble with getting Windows 8.1 installed on this M.2 ssd. sofar ive looked at some toturials that were surposed to enable the controller that makes sure the m.2 device is correctly detected and validated. altho i did go trough a few different methods and steps. the few times i whent trough it all to the install page where u select the hdd/ssd/storrage device to install your preffered OS on, it tells me that the device i whant to install my OS on: Windows cannot be installed to this disk. this computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu. well, thats what ive bin trying to do in the bios allready. any bulletproff guid to do this? would love to get this pc rocking now x)
