its important to know that my PC ain't nothing new in terms of the hardware and OS, but i still want it to be working before i can get the upgrade i desperately want. So my CPU seems to be working itself harder than it should be, the task manager says it works itself to the max when i do the most basic of things, like having just one chrome tab up and nothing else. awhile ago (half a year?) it didn't have this sorta problem, is this a sign of the CPU or other hardware degrading? i think the CPU is a i7 and the OS is windows 7

So, I have had some weird crashes on my PC ever since I built it in mid-december. It is not really any straight forward crash, like a BSOD or anything like that. Instead it is a protracted slowdown of the system. Here is generally how it happens: At first, usually when I'm watching YouTube, the video starts slowing down (audio is fine), then speeds up, slows down again and freezes, audio from the video keeps running tho. The YouTube tab stops being responsive as well and every other tab too, although I can switch between the tabs without problem. I then try to close Chrome, usually without succes, so I then open Task Manager to force it to close but now the Task Manager is not working properly either. Firstly, usages for different apps do not update like they usually do with the % usage and such. On the performance tab, it is not updating anything either, everything is static. One weird thing I have noticed on the performance tab for the GPU tho is that sometimes it shows a -1% usage and even a 169% usage one time somehow. When PC is working properly I never see the usage for the GPU go over 100% or under 0%, which is logical, -1% and 169% should not be possible but it happens during this weird ''crashing'' sequence. Enough with that tho. I sometimes then open other programs, programs already running usually opens but then do not work properly, like, some things in the program works while another is unresponsible. Sometimes when I open a program it gets stuck half way through opening it tho and it gets completely unresponsive. At this point, Task Manager is still not updating so that is unuseful. Every program open then slowly starts calling it a day one by one and get unresponsive, some I can still minimize and open even tho the program specific tabs and options does not do anything. While this happens, the sound from the original YouTube video that was playing stops as well. Now, most programs get completely unresponsive, some Windows functions may be working tho, but not properly. Like, clicking the Windows icon in the buttom left corner usually just brings up a black box, the taskbar icons can be moved in a weird way, like they can be moved into each other, they do not snap besides each other anymore. When I click the ''Show hidden icons'' on the taskbar and hover over the programs the grey outlining box that shows when hovering over an icon can get stuck on many of the other icons, this does not happen when Windows is working properly. Usually at about this time, everything stops working completely, well, except for the mouse pointer somehow. I can always move the mouse pointer, that has never become unresponsive, but everything else is. The only thing I can do at this point is to force a restart with pressing the restart button on my PC case and then I'm back into Windows about 15 seconds later and everything is working like it should. One more thing to mention tho is that when the PC slowly starts ''crashing'' the iCUE RGB lights in my PC changes color to the defualt setting. Oh, and one last weird thing is when I open and minimize different programs when the PC is starting to act up, sometime some text from the program gets stuck on the screen and does not minimize with the rest of the program. When this happened today, I decided to record some of it with my phone. Although, today, the ''crashing'' was not so severe at all actually, sure, my programs became fairly unuseable (albeit not completely unresponsive), Task Manager stopped updating, GPU usage showed -1%, Windows could not be shutdown or put to sleep, nothing happened when pressing those ''options'', the icons in the taskbar could be moved in a weird way along with the ''Show hidden icons'' grey outliner getting stuck on many icons at the same time, and I had to make forced restart to get Windows working like normally again. I do not know if anyone else have experienced this weird ''crashing'' before but it is always worth posting here on LTT just in case. Below is a link to the clip showing some of what Windows looks like during this weird ''crash''. It is not a very good clip to showcase how Windows act up tho since like I said, this time it was not that severe at all like it has been the other times when everything, except for the mouse pointer, one by one gets completely unresponsive... TL;DR - System starts slowing down, usually when watching YouTube so the video stops but sound keep going. Then, other programs start becoming unresponsive, not all at the same time, but over a couple of minutes. HWMonitor and Task Manager stops monitoring as well so I cannot see if any particular program is taking up extra resources or what the system temps and usages are... After somewhere between 3-6 minutes after first slowdown, everything usually becomes completely unresponsive, except for the mouse pointer which I can still move around. A forced restart fixes everything tho. This has happened about once every two weeks or so since I built my PC in mid-december. Any thoughts and, or feedback, on what could be causing this is greatly appreciated. Thanks for the help!

Lately I have noticed a major decrease in performance in games I have been playing, which leads me to assume there is some sort of problem with my Radeon RX 470(4GB) GPU (Paired with a Ryzen 5 2600 and 24GB of RAM) Troubleshooting tips would be appreciated. Some examples are: a stable 140+ FPS in CSGO -> 80 FPS commonly dipping to 60 and below, 120/130 FPS in R6 -> around 70 FPS , and the frame rate I get in call of duty: cold war is around 30-50 FPS and I think that is probably bad, even for the 470. I have had the card since December of 2016 so idk if its just dying because its old or what. I have also included some 3Dmark test info if that helps

(Not sure if this is the appropriate place for this but) I've been noticing major slowdowns and lagging/freezing while watching YouTube or when booting into Windows 10 and I don't know how to fix this. Is this a CPU problem? Or should I get more ram? Or would an SSD be best? I regularly have Steam, Spotify, Chrome, and Discord open and sometimes I edit video and record games. My specs are: CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 1700 Eight core Ram: 16gb GPU: GTX 1650 Super OC HDD:WD 2 1tb [UserBenchmarks: Game 29%, Desk 52%, Work 50%](https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/28703280) ||Model|Bench :----|:----|:----| **CPU**|[AMD Ryzen 7 1700](https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/AMD-Ryzen-7-1700/Rating/3917)|69.3% **GPU**|[Nvidia GTX 1650S (Super)](https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Nvidia-GTX-1650S-Super/Rating/4058)|24.6% **HDD**|[WD Blue 1TB (2012)](https://hdd.userbenchmark.com/WD-Blue-1TB-2012/Rating/1779)|89.9% **HDD**|[WD Blue 1TB (2012)](https://hdd.userbenchmark.com/WD-Blue-1TB-2012/Rating/1779)|68.9% **RAM**|[Samsung M378A1K43CB2-CTD 2x8GB](https://ram.userbenchmark.com/SpeedTest/381466/Samsung-M378A1K43CB2-CTD-2x8GB)|83.1% **MBD**|[HP Pavilion Gaming Desktop 690-00xx](https://www.userbenchmark.com/System/HP-Pavilion-Gaming-Desktop-690-00xx/87753)|

I installed Windows 10 and it ran fine, I installed several programs and everything is fine. I download Geforce experience and install it. Suddenly Windows starts freezing randomly for 2-5 seconds, and becomes unresponsive and slow. Does anyone know what could be causing it?

During downloads steam first peaks my ram usage about 25-30% more than my idle (20-25%). This doesn't bother me seeing as when it is done downloading steam backs off the RAM usage, but my antivirus avira seems to double down and keep the RAM at the 50-55% usage point even in idle. I find this very strange and if there is anyone that can maybe explain this? Restarting my computer brings back down RAM levels but steam never recommends "Please restart now" like most installers so I always thought it was unnecessary. Attached is my RAM usage, processes in task manager doesn't really show anything going on, in fact it mirrors idle usage. However going to the graph it is up to that 58%. Then if I go to resource monitor it looks like avira is eating up all my RAM. I know google chrome is using some in the picture but that was because I took it while writing this message, if google chrome was closed the peak is still there and not changing. We need linus to do a video because hes a genius and can totally fix this am I right?

Hello, This is my first time here. I'm long time subscriber to LTT channel though. Well here's my issue. I have a networking problem in my house setting it up. My gear- Tp link ax6000 Tp-link normal extender 1gb network switch(5 port) tp link So here's the situation. My fiber connection is for 150Mbps and my router and modem are placed upstairs and i live downstairs.(open area no brick walls in between just stairs) Firstly i used only the modem but had connection issues when i connected 3 4 devices to wifi as i had to remove one device to add another. Then i bought a tp link wifi extender and plugged it downstairs and with its 1 ethernet port i plugged in the switch and then switch is connected to Xbox, laptop, smart tv. All smartphones are connected directly to wifi from modem. But same issues. Had to disconnect one device to make wifi connect on another. Then i bought the ax6000 and connected it to main modem and turned off wifi from main modem and turned on wifi on ax6000 and connected to the repeater. It worked fine at start but again same issues. I have to disconnect 1 thing to add other. All smartphones again connected to ax6000 and xbox, laptop and tv via Ethernet switch to extender. If i take it the switch and connect all via wifi then also the same issue. Repeater is only in receiver mode. It doesn't transmit any wifi signal. Just to receive signal from ax6000 and use it via Ethernet. Note- No i cant connect via Ethernet from upstairs to downstairs. It's not possible without house renovation.

For the past week, I've had random internet slowdowns where most websites loaded slowly, the ping was high, YT videos not loading at all, and Facebook/Instagram pictures not loading. I applied some of the popular fixes for network issues (netsh commands etc) and nothing worked except resetting IPs or disabling then re-enabling the adapter. While I was testing my speed with Speedtest.net it showed me that I'm in the US (I'm not). I was really confused then I had an idea as to what's going on. I checked my IP address with whatismyipaddress.com and it also showed me that I'm in the US. I uninstalled Hotspot Shield but my YT videos were still buffering, then I uninstalled Windscribe and they worked instantly. I should've checked before uninstalling it to see if the program was running or not (I'm fairly certain its icon wasn't showing in the notification area). So yeah, I thought I should share this in case someone is having a similar issue because I was about to buy a NIC.

So we have heard about apple slowing down older phones and i don't really care since i am no fan of apple and have never owned a product and had hoped to never do but it will change. I am getting an iphone 5 as a phone to use until i can buy a new android phone for the single purpose of getting to use a very important app. Here in Sweden we have an app that you can prove who you are online. All banks and goverment site uses it. And they have now updated it and it needs Android 5.0 and iOs 9 as minimum. My current phone is an Samsung Galaxy s4 mini that can only get to android 4.4.2. You might not think this as an important thing but i need the app to access goverment sites were i can apply for help with rent (a good thing we have in sweden for low income households) and another app that makes buying used items easier as cash is not something that is used here much. (we are very digital in Sweden some stores don't even accept cash) I read an article about the slowing down and they say that i came with the iOs 10.2.1 when they fixed a bug that iphone 6 users were experiencing with the phone just shutting down. Am asking since my s4 mini is not the quickest and on paper it's faster then an iphone 5 but just by a tiny bit. If this article is true it should be "safe" from the slowdown if i don't go above iOs 10 as i don't require higher then iOs 9 for the apps. What is the truth? or is the slowdown not that large?

I brought an Asus RT-AC3200 wifi router to my new two-bedroom apartment. However, this apartment comes with a router, and we have to use their router and internet without admin privileges. They tucked their tiny router in the utility room in the corner of the apartment, so I thought I would set up my nicer router as a range extender near the center of the apartment. I connected my router to theirs with the built-in ethernet ports in the wall. I thought that this method would: 1) provide better coverage 2) keep me from having to set-up all my wifi devices over again (I kept its old name which is different from the new router's network name.) 3) keep my router from sitting useless in a box Unfortunately, I frequently have very slow internet. I don't know what to blame or how to fix it. I have 25Mbps download from the provider, but today was having trouble streaming 720p video with only one device online. Speedtests usually confirm I am getting the correct download and upload speeds in this configuration, so I don't know why I have such trouble loading and streaming sometimes. Can the routers interfere rather than help? Is keeping the old router name and connecting my devices to it a bad idea? Any settings I could have configured incorrectly? Did I do everything perfectly and it's all my provider's fault? I only have very basic networking knowledge, so any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hi! So I'm having this problem with my hard drive. It basically is my hard drive blacking out for couple of seconds. I have a mechanical 1T hard drive. My disk usage goes to 100% and nothing works. Task manager shows some very slow speeds of 0.2 MB/s when the thing happens. Does this mean that I have to buy a new hard drive? Can I fix this? I don't even have a backup drive anywhere... The drive is about maybe 2 years old I'm not sure and a lot of deleting and getting new files has been done. And IF I need a new drive I'm wishing of getting something pretty fast but still something with a lot of storage. Any suggestions? :^) I hope someone can help me!

Hello, Well, I know this particular thing has been discused a lot on almost every tech channel. But, I really want to know if the tradeoffs given by an SSD versus a regular RAID0 array of disk (ignoring the power draw) would matter enough to get one. Long story short, I bouught an almost *new* SSD from a guy who was upgrading his computer. I'm not sure what computer he had, but I ended up with a Samsung MZ7TE512HMHP-000L2 SSD, which is basically an OEM version of the dreaded Samsung 840 Evo (you know, the one with the horrible slowdowns). As being based on it, my *new* SSD also had those issues. I didn't know about it then. Well, six monthis passed, and I notticed that my computer would slow down considerably, and from time to time the AHCI controller would hang for a minute or so. Of course, I was really worried, and after a whole day clicking on every article and forum I could find about my issue, I realized that my SSD had this problem, and it would be fixable... If only my drive wasn't OEM. There's no firmware tools for my drive, even if it's the exact same thing as an 840 Evo. So, I got in contact with the guy, and he said that he will try to help me out in getting another drive somehow, maybe through warranty or someting. Well, right now I made myself a RAID0 array of HDD I had laying around, and yes, it's pretty loud, and doesn't really give me the seek performance of an SSD, but It got me to thinking... Is it, from a reliability standpoint, really worth having an SSD over an HDD? I mean, both can fail and stop working at all, and yes, HDD's are very fragile, but ther are phisically fragile, not datawise. Or at least not that much. If well taken care of, a Hard disk will outlive the rest of the components of a computer, whereas an SSD will last for a few years before it gets to an unusably slow state, or even completely failing. I'm totally aware that if one of my RAID0 disks dies, my data is gone. But so will if my SSD decided to stop working completely (which was pretty close to do anyways) So, would you thinkk this theme would do for a good TechQuickie video? I would like to know all the pros and cons of an SSD over a closely performing RAID0 array of disks (again, ignoring power draw).

Hey there. so ive noticed that the game has had some issues for alot of its users and it seems to have bin an engine issue. but as far as i can see, most of the people that had issues. it is resolved for. and i guess im an exception... its the only game i have that has any issues running at all. and the issue im having, ive had real trubble with finding posts about or any other incidents in other games at all. So what happends when i get ingame is that i start off with decent fps, but still have some wird kind of lagg spike that also screws with steering input and overall smoothness. the wird part tho is that my fps wich starts off at max 99.9 drops each time the game laggs. the usage also drops and the gpu and cpu clock aswell. but the realy bissare thing is that my fps does not go up to 99.9 agen. it keeps on falling. like 99.9- drops during lagg to 40ish and goes back up to mby 97.5 and keeps doing this until the game runs at maby 25 fps max and still keeps dropping.. idk if at this point its just an engine issue. altho its the only game on my system that makes my pc behave like this. I really wonder what would make a system actually lose fps over the time playing the game. any insight on what could cause this issue besides game engine failure? temps are no issue as my rig isnt termal nor power throtteling during the time i test the issue. Drivers are all up to date. tested without sli profile, no difference. reinstalled game, reinstalled steam to different hd. reinstalled pc. all in all nothing has made a difference. the game hasnt worked propperly for me since it officialy went from Early access to officialy released. wich is a shame. its a really good game..

Windows 10 Shutdoown does not actually Shutdown your PC
Recon801 posted a topic in Operating Systems
I've been noticing that my PC has been slowing down periodically around twice a month. I especially notice this slow down when watching high res videos online. I assumed that the issue was my connection, but my connection has always been a stable 55mb/s.Never throttling. So, I began monitoring my internet traffic usage through task manager. While in task manager I noticed that there is a counter under the performance tab showing the uptime for your cpu. Mine was approaching 11days, which is weird because I Shut Down my PC every night. I don't put it to sleep or hibernate, I Shut Down. I Shut the computer down twice as a test and the counter stayed at just under 11days, and my slow down continued. So, I did a Restart, this fixed all the slow down issues I was having and reset the counter to 0. I went around the house and checked on my other computers all of them had the same counter although the days of uptime varied from 2 days to 23. Did Microsoft turn Shutdown into hibernate? I noticed that as the counter gets higher and higher more and more small issues begin popping up. Loading windows takes longer, internet slows down. Even just populating the data on my HHD takes longer. Anyone else noticing this issue? The old Turn it off and back on essentially doesn't work unless you actually click Restart. So guys I don't know what's happening, my computer is very slow... I mean veeeery slow for some apparent reason. Now I have narrowed it down to either my dinosaur of a i3 (530 model) or my battle hardened HDD which has been running for the past 6 years or so. Anyway, when my pc starts up there is this audible revving noise something I'd associate with a car and then a metal click and the noise subsides, and again when you play games on it for long periods of time or watch a movie, an audible revving down can be heard and when the game/movie is closed there is a noticeable lag and the revving up can be heard. Now a days I can't even lad up games like League of Legends without either entering the game late or hanging while loading, and then there is the random drops in frames and hangs. Guys... halp...

So I'm thinking about getting a SSD mainly for a boot drive, snag my OS and programs there too. The qustion is, shall I save up a bit more money and then get a SSD with TRIM, or just go ahead and get a cheaper one - without TRIM? Because I red that SSD's without TRIM slow down over time when they have to delete old data and overwrite it... I'm currently looking at Intel 520 series 128gb. I'm going to plug it in a SATA 2 connector, (my mobo doesn't support SATA 3 *QQ* even though it's pretty solid Gigabyte UltraDurable series) So will I feel the slowdown really if the SSD does not support TRIM? It will already be capped by the connector, since SATA 2 has a 300mb/s limit... Give me your opinions I'm on a budget, so the lower the price - the better. P.S. I mostly play games, listen to music, watch streams and download stuff...not really into video editing or any kind of heavy tasks...just tired of my current HDD which slows down the entire pc when multitasking...

Hello, I've recently been experiencing random lag spikes that seem to regularly occur while gaming on any 3D game (haven't tested any 2D games for this issue so far) regardless of GPU / CPU / Memory load and graphics settings. During each lag spike (which lasts about 10-20 seconds), the game drops to around 5-10 fps and the sound starts stuttering. I've monitored cpu, disk, gpu and memory usage to see if any of them was spiking, but it seems like everything stays the same except for GPU usage, which drops to 0%. If the lag spike is long enough, the GPU goes into power saving mode (probabilly because of the lack of GPU usage) and the voltage drops briefly. The GPU temperature never goes beyond 75C, and I've had it running at higher temps when mining dogecoin / litecoin so that shouldn't be a problem. The CPU temperature is always below 65C. I have no idea when this issue started and I don't think I changed any parts since the last time I remember playing with no lag spikes. I've recently updated my catalyst drivers to the latest non-beta drivers (14.4 I think?) and then switched to beta drivers (14.6) today, hoping to fix the issue to no avail. DxDiag: http://pastebin.com/XW3LnkPj OS: Windows 8.1 CPU: Core 2 Quad Q9650 GPU: ati HD 5770 PSU: Corsair cx430 Mobo: MSI G41M-P33 with 4gb DDR2 ram no overclocking I'm using dual monitors primary: Asus VG248QE @ 120hz + lightboost (also tried 144hz w/o lightboost) secondary: Samsung SyncMaster LD220HD @ 60hz - Turning off the secondary monitor by disabling it in the desktop properties (without physically disconnecting the dvi cable) seemed to reduce the frequency of the lag spikes when I was testing on Saints Row The Third, but I'm not entirely sure, as the spikes are kinda random. - Switching to 144hz and disabling lightboost didn't help. - Disabling indexing on all hard drivers didn't help. - Wiped out the video drivers, manually removed registry entries and downgraded to catalyst 13.2 (which is the last version I remember working correctly) and the problem persists. - Tried cleaning and reseating the GPU's heatsink. This made the GPU run 15C cooler, but it still didn't fix the problem. - Tried installing watch dogs on my SSD to rule out any disk access problems and the lag spikes did not go away. - Tried playing Serious Sam Classic: The Second encounter for around 1 hour and a half on my integrated intel G41 GPU and the lag spikes do not appear when playing on the integrated GPU. Now that I've ruled overheating out, I think I'll have to borrow my friend's GPU to see if it's a GPU hardware problem. I'll also try swapping ram sticks just to be sure the ram is good, but ram problems usually result in bsod's. I also ran this tool to check wether my VRAM is dying (my video card is like, 3-4 years old) but it didn't seem to find any errors even though it skipped 2 passes of the test due to incompatibility: WARNING: Your card can be not compatible with this test! Let me preface this by saying I am by no means a PC expert, but I recently ran into an issue that gave me a question. How much of the total VRAM on your graphics card(s) do you need to be utilizing until slowdowns occur in a game? Obviously, if you hit 100% of the VRAM on your card you're going to be hitting a wall, but does the FPS of your game drop significantly if your using, let's say, 75-95% of your VRAM? At what point does it start seriously affecting your FPS? Thanks to anyone taking time to respond

Hey guys, it's me again. I've got one more question for you. I read that i5 4690k supports DDR3 1333mhz and 1600mhz memory. Since I had 12 GB DDR3 1066 mhz RAM and I was going to buy this processor I was wondering if it would cause any slowdowns and if I had to buy new RAM or if they would be fine.
