Hi, I’m building a sleeper-kind of pc in a really old case. There are 2 front side usb’s and this is the internal cable (see picture). This is’t the usb 2.0 standard, the “filled” hole is on another pin. Is there any way I can plug this in? It can plug in half of my usb 3.0 mobo header but I’m no sure if that would be a good idea… anyone experience with this? motherboard is MSI b450m -A pro Max II EDIT: It's a Compaq Presario 5WV396 5000 series. If anyone knows if they have a special USB pinout or something, let me know pls. Thanks!

I got this from my dad. It supports full ATX & microATX Form factor motherboard. Wanting to build a sleeper pc, if i can get the model of this case it would be appreciated

hi i have an old school compaq 7970 i already took out all of the internals cleaned it etc i just realized i cant fit any modern components in to this case i need custom fabrication but idk how to do that are there any companies that can do custom fabrication for me? the pc case doesnt have a side pannel i have to slide the internal cage out of the back of the pc it used to have an amd athlon cpu in it (ik really old right) does anyone have any tips on how to start? im pretty new to pc building i already ripped out my gpu socket trying to replace ram by accident on my current pc. woops. i dont even know if modern gpus or power supplys can even mount inside of the cage so i might need a custom fabricated cage all together.

[Solved] Update: Put a much more powerful 120mm fan in replacing the SP100 that was there. Temps have dropped 30 degrees. So I am having some temperature problems in my small form factor build sleeper PC build. (Photos below) To give an idea of the dimensions the entire case is the same footprint exactly as a mATX motherboard. Specs: Ryzen 5600X (stock cooler) MSI RTX 3060 16 GB 3600hz memory 750 watt corsair SFX PSU Pictures below are old. The changes are the PSU is upside-down with a fan mounted outside the case to pull air through then the PSU fan is not on. (not the best idea but limited options) The cables around the CPU are moved to make it more clear over there. Other difference is the GPU is now a 3060 instead of the pictured 770TI. The only ventilation is the entire front and that tiny slit you can see pictured in the back. As well as the GPU and PSU vents. 120mm Fan in the front pulls air in. Now for the issues... Running Cinebench R23 for 10 minutes puts me at 95 degrees or close to it. Any games that push the CPU at all will get me 95 as well. After messing around with some small fans and not making much progress I am thinking about getting a 120mm AIO for where the 120mm fan is. I would need to find a thin AIO as there is not much space. Does anyone have a suggestion for a thin radiator AIO or an entirely different solution. ---------------- GPU temperatures are fine (for now). Pretty much has its own section down there where it can pull air in the front and blow it out the back.

I chose the Hyper 212X as It was affordable and seemed to have good reviews. I've so far found it to be really good with the testing and usage of the system I've done so far as such I would highly recommend it for budget builders. Although this cases was designed to fix ATX Motherboards the mounting spots had square holes and only two center brass standoffs. After reading a forum post I almost used washers to combat this issue but didn't like the look and decided it would be too tedious and instead measured up and made two washer plates that riveted to the Mobo base I then tested fitted the Mobo marked mounting holes when aligned with the IO hole and drilled little holes for my standoffs and used small washers to step them out about 1mm. I also used little nuts on the back of the standoffs to secure them tightly In order to achieve decent exhaust flow I removed the two expansion slot covers on the top and bottom of my GPU. To allow room for the 120mm front fan and give more space for cable management the disk drive caddy was trimmed to only accommodate the disk drive that was then gutted and used as a HDD caddy. the CD Drive face clipped to the front and the tray shield was screwed to an inner lip. the audio jack and volume control are glued in place and non functional but the volume slider still spins. The Floppy disk drive is still completely assembled but not plugged in as I didn't want to deal with more cable management or finding out it doesn't work all together. While all the case buttons and lights are fully functional the HDD light plug was 3 pin and had to be cut down into two single pins with a razor blade making it difficult to plug in. In some of the photo's you will see that I mounted the CPU fan backwards!!!!! I quickly picked up on this and fixed it as those photos were taken. I would like to note that I'm aware that I could have added more floor fans. I didn't do this because the steel of this old case is thin and I didn't want to compromise the integrity too much. even when drilling the first fan I noticed a lot of flex. I understand its only the floor but keeping this hard to find case as original as possible was important to me. the bottom of the front panel has a gap as well as the small holes at the front. if down the track I find the cooling to be inadequate I will look into adding an additional exhaust fan and maybe another floor fan making both larger or even water cooling. I do have case fan filters coming in the mail but they didn't arrive on time so I will be adding them in the near future. Please take into consideration that I am still new to Pc building and did my best to build this computer. I really want to get some feedback on how I went. Build Description/ Explanation: I would like to start off by saying that this is actually my first ever attempt at building a pc and have been mostly a console gamer my whole life. I began gaming many years ago playing such games as aoe1, aoe2, Total Annihilation and Runescape as well as early sims titles. It wasn't long before I made the transition to PlayStation and have been primarily a console gamer since. After a brief stint owning Old Alienware M18x R2 Laptop my interest in pc gaming and gaming as a whole expanded and I soon found myself finding much to be desired with my old laptops performance (which was surprisingly good all things considered) and even the PlayStation hardware I was so familiar with. After some friends had also made the transition to Pc I was inspired to look into buying a much better system and then eventually convinced myself that in order to save money it would be a great idea to attempt building one. After some thought and reminiscing about the great times I spent playing old titles in my childhood and the old beige/white systems my family owned at the time I was inspired to build a new system that would preform excellently into one of these old towers. After many hours of late night research on various tech forums (including this one) and countless Linus Tech Tips YouTube videos I built up enough knowledge and confidence to start looking for a case and parts. which led me to my current tower that I found on eBay that is almost identical to the towers I was surrounded by at a young age. With a case that supports ATX form factor I was ready to get my parts and begin case mods to assemble the system. With a few clever mods some determination, concentration and basic DIY skill I was able to have all my cuts, gutting, drilling, painting (case floor is painted) and fans mounted in a day. this includes removing the old PSU cables and drives, cutting the drive tray mount down, gutting the disk drive to be used as a HDD caddy, Step drilling holes for floor fan, making and riveting plates for the Mobo mount tray as well as mount for the upper front fan all done in a day. the next day was spent test fitting the the Mobo then marking and drilling holes for the standoffs. With some trips to Bunnings (Australian hardware store) and a few hours later the Mobo was assembled and mounted and I began slowly mounting the rest of the parts and spent the rest of the night neatly labeling some wires and hiding spare plugs. on the Third and final day my cable management was done and I was ready for the first boot. Having read and watched many tech videos I was expecting to have some issues as I was aware that your supposed to test all your parts outside of the case first. I disregarded this advice as I don't have a test bench and didn't feel confident setting up parts on my table in my busy crowded living environment. To my surprise everything started and booted on the first button press without a single issue. I was quick to set up some basic overclocking (only to 4.0GHz as I will need to gain some experience and possibly update my cooling solution before pushing the i9 too hard) and play with my fans a little then installed windows followed by some drivers. I did some testing on Cinebench and used Speccy to monitor temps that I found to surprisingly good ( between 30-45°C at idol and between 55-65°C under load for about and hour). Finally I installed the highly anticipated first game. That game being aoe1 definitive edition. At the time of writing this that was the only game I've played as I suffer from the notoriously bad condition known as Australian Internet. I thoroughly enjoyed going back to the basics and cannot wait to get some newer more demanding games installed and see how they run as well as continue learning and building on the system as time goes on. Build Updates: Tuesday, 5 January 2021, Added another front intake and a lower rear intake fan that has greatly improved cooling. Both rear fans (exhaust and intake) are a Noctua NF-A8 80mm fan while the be quiet fan was relocated to the front.

Case: Dell XPS Dimension D266 I'm looking to take the PC that I grew up playing star wars math and word rescue on and bring it to life once again. I'm not too sure for the graphics card because the case doesn't exactly have optimal cooling since the 390x is 275W and the 980 is only 165W. The heat for the case might be the limiting factor. As it sits, parting it out with almost all used parts on PCPartPicker it comes in at $464.77 which is right in my budget. Any help with choosing the graphics card would be very much appreciated and any insight on the differences with the power supply's. I know they are both very good brands and EVGA makes most of the power supply's for brands. The modular vs. non modular isn't a huge deal as it is a large case so I'm not too worried about that.

So I managed to acquire quite a unique case similar to the one Linus built in the sleeper series called hubert. So the plan is to upgrade this case so that I can use it for eSports events up and down the UK whilst keeping the retro / sleeper look. I am currently half way through the project. A new front panel setup has been installed replacing the old USB and FireWire ports for 4 USB 3.0 gen 1 ports. Also had all new barrels fitted so the old locking mechanism works again. But the main focus of this project is to rebuild the front plate of the case to hold a triple radiator configuration with enough vent holes to cover cooling the hardware. Cutting out part of the front plate was a pain but doable with an angle grinder. To ensure that there is enough strength, I have used 1mm thick steel plating to reinforce the .5mm thick steel of the original plate. Was a pain to fit and secure correctly but is now ready to mark out the new fan positions then drill them out. The only things left to do is save up enough to get some killer hardware in there and give the inside a fresh coat of paint. Just need a name to suit it!

I am building a Sleeper inside an HQ45PRO. Why? Because I need a gaming PC an I am old! Also I really liked these case back then with the blue segments. The idea is to make everything functional (diskdrive, CD-Rom Drive, etc) with the new insides. I found this New Old Stock cardreader that is going in there for sure. Also I've found some DVD-RW drives. The black one is Sata, and the whiteone Pata, so I hope I can change the fronts or something. TLDR: - Build video is now here:

Hi! Recently, I bought a used PC that had a good case (I wouldn’t call it that good or that old). However, when I was inspecting it, I came across these mountings things. Is it safe to just screw in my motherboard in it or do I have to drill it out to install the motherboard stands?

Hey guys! Never posted here before, but I felt like I had to share my Optiplex. I just finished it a couple days ago and wanted to see what you think of it. I don't think I've seen anyone actually swap the motherboard in one of these before so I had to try. Here's the specs: -MSI B450M bazooka v2 mobo -Ryzen 3 1300x -16gb G.Skill Trident Z rgb 3200mhz -EVGA gtx 1060 3gb -EVGA 450BT -Kingston A400 240gb ssd -250gb HDD that came with it originally -3d printed a cover for the wires because I'm bad at cable management -also 3d printed the latch for the drive bays and the HDD cage because they weren't black lol The only issues I had putting it together was with the proprietary connectors on the front panel i/o and the case fan. I just happened to have a spare jumper wire that allowed me to plug the power button in, and I had to rearrange the case fan wires in the connector for it to work as well. Otherwise it went relatively smooth!

Decided to do a sleeper PC with a HP Vectra case. Now... I'm not very good at the whole "micro PC thing" So basically I need a small motherboard (SSD on-board is nice but not required) Decent CPU (quad core, 3-4 GHz) SSD (on-board or not I don't have a preference) I already have CPU cooler (stock Intel cooler), GPU (MSI 1050), HDD, and RAM (Patriot DDR4 8 GB 2x4) Also if anyone knows a good but cheap PCI-Express x16 extension cable let me know No peripherals needed $700

Hi, I’m doing a sleeper build in an old Sun Ultra 45 case. Pretty much everything about this case is proprietary; I’ve drilled new standoffs, made new HDD mounts, air flow, the lot. For the most part this build has been down to problem solving and following basic sleeper procedure, but when it comes to connecting the strange front panel IO the project has hit a standstill. Here’s pictures of the IO unit. It’s fairly standard in terms of its actual interface content – a momentary power button, an LED, USB 2.0 (a little old but still), Firewire, and audio in/out. The place where I’m really having the trouble is the non-standard connectors on the back of the PCB that would have gone to the Sun motherboard. I’ve deduced they’re actually just IDC connectors. The pin counts from left to right are as follows: 26, 6, 14. Now I’ve dug around for pinouts for them, but I honestly can’t find a thing. Sun service manuals are made for the average office worker to be able to understand with instructions like PART A CONNECTS TO PART B, etc. Do you think there’s a possibility that I could connect these IDC connectors to the motherboard somehow? The last thing I really wanna do is cannibalize this piece of hardware cos this builds tryna preserve as much as I can of the original case. Thanks guys.

Hi guys, this is is my second build and I thought I’d have a bit of fun trying to turn this old NEC powermate into a half decent machine. I’m looking forward to the challenge of building in a bit of a weird case (I already have one issue regarding a power supply but I think I’ve got it sorted) and will probably be seeking a bit of advice from you guys and girls if I run into any issues.
