  1. Hi, I wanted to build a sleeper in this case but needed to get the pictures from it. It still starts but won’t find an operating system. Is there supposed to be a hard drive here (See picture 2)? Or where is the data stored and can I still get to it. Also the second CD-“slot” doesn’t work for a reason. I got the pc from someone so don’t know a lot about it, except for it being a “Compaq Presario 5000.”Also, it was made before I was born so I don’t have experience with that kind of tech ;).
  2. Looking to mod the Thermaltake SHARK VA7000BWA, wondering which setup to put inside. Trying to install a good spec recent parts that don't run hot bearing in mind the reduced airflow. Have a couple of 5.5" port to fan converters that I had 3d printed for increased airflow in the front of the PC. Will be dremaling out airflow cutouts on the front door
  3. I recently came across this thread while looking for advice on how to build an optiplex sleeper. I wanted to buy a ryzen motherboard inside of my optiplex case 7010, but like him, i'm having problem with the power button. He says he used a jumper wire to connect the power button, does anyone know what that is and where i could find one? thank you to whoever responds My current build is a i7 3770 16 gb of ram cxm 650w 1660 super the i7 3770 has been good on most games at 1080 60+ fps, but i know eventually, it wont be. So im looking to upgrade to a ryzen board. I love the idea of building in optiplex case, so i would like to keep the case
  4. This is a repost of As it also matches this forum.
  5. So I have a build in mind and I want some opinions. The purpose: I am software developer and my client needs reassuring that I don't lose or let his data stolen so I need a 1-2-3 backup setup with full disk encryption (I know stupid but I don't make the rules). 1 my laptop with a Samsung 970 nvme. 2 the NAS (that I don't have) that will update every minute one folder with many small files. 3 the clients NAS updated via VPN every hour. The idea: A small NAS that has fast ssds as storage with hardware encryption so maybe nvme NAS ( ) is not a bad idea. The laptop is capable of 2.5 Gbps and has thunderbolt 3 so the NAS should have some kind of fast conenction It does not need a lot of storage 1TB with raid1 would be more than enough but it needs to be silent as I will be working next to it 8 hours a day. What I have: A spare second-hand Ryzen 5 PRO 4650G the provided cooler ( the one that comes in the box with the proccesor and it is also used ) 2 x 4GB of some kind of ram of which I don't have details yet because these pieces come from someone at my office but I know they were in the same device as the CPU so DDR4 A very very very old dual core lenovo horizontal thinkcenter with ddr ... 1 ... and 80GB harddrive ... that I consider garbage but kind of fits perfectly in my desk ... hole Since the sleeper NAS idea and that is why I like the idea of this project and I don't want any premade solution I mean NO FUN. What I need: Ideas for what components I should buy to make this project working and how should I solve the obvious issues: extremely low latency, 2.5G vs 2.5G + any (even 100M should suffice) for outside communication vs thunderbolt + any, reliability and obviously silent cooling. And I know this sounds like a want a pants build for no money but actually I don't have any kind of buget limitations so if you can give me arguments that I need some stupid 10 grand cpu or anything fot that matter no problem. Soooo who will help me with a stupid but awesome NAS?
  6. Recently I started working on a PC build inside of the shell of a Nintendo GameCube. Although I’ve already started I still have some parts to figure out and I will try and keep this thread updated as I do more and more with the build. Here is the parts I already have Motherboard: Asrock DeskMini A300 CPU: 3200g (I wish that I was able to use my old 2700x and under volt it but sadly the desk mini straight up refuses to boot with it even if you have an eGPU) CPU Cooler: Noctua L9i with AMD mounting hardware GPU: 1660 super plugged into a m.2 to PCIE 4x adaptor Ram: 2x8 G.SKILL Ripjaw 2666 soduim Power Supply: Still working on this part but the idea is to use a 330watt AC-DC power brick from Dell into a Pico (or similar size) power supply however I need to find one that can do ~250 watts on the 12 volt rail as I plan on running the Motherboard off of it as long as it doesn’t tank CPU clock speed (motherboard ships with a 19 volt AC-DC power brick but I’ve seen it work on 12 volts) I also have some neat features planned/working such as the front controller ports on the GameCube working so I can use real GameCube controllers, working original power button, and a super experimental idea where the reset button triggers servos/small solenoids that would open up the shell. Another idea that I have is 3D printing a new shroud for the GPU in order to try and turn it into a blower style card since the stock fan placement will have a hard time getting air. Let me know what you guys think I am very open to ideas.
  7. Hello. I'm building a sleeper pc but when I remove the old motherboard it turns out that it was directly screwed to case I wonder if I install the new motherboard like before is there a chance for it to short circuit and destroy my new components?
  8. Budget (including currency): 45,000 PHP (estimated) Country: Philippines Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Video editing and games Other details I currently have a MSI B450I as the motherboard, and a Metalfish 500w itx psu. Also just got a damaged Quadro 4000 which I'll be getting repaired soon as my first gpu because only single slot cards can fit in my case. My case is an old IBM S50, a computer from my childhood. I'll be modifying the S50 a little to fit standard size parts. As for performance, I'm not looking for high fps in games just yet, so the quadro is fine until I can upgrade to a better single slot gpu. I'll be buying a Ryzen 5 3400g in a few weeks, to make use of the rear io, and I'll be upgrading to a ryzen 7 with integrated graphics if it comes out like I hear. I need help doing this build, tried reddit, idk if they want to help build in an ancient case. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
  9. Want to shock your friends? Impress your neighbors? Be better in bed? This PC promises to do none of those things. 10. Hello together, I finally finished my sleeperpc. It took way too long and is really rough, if you look at it closely. I didnt took that many pictures, so you have to imagine a few steps. I started with a old tuberadio, wich was dead. So i started with making place for the computerparts i wanted to put into it. For the parts i used mostly the parts i already had, which are: - RTX 2060 Super - Ryzen 5 3600 - 2x8GB Ram 4200Mhz - B550 Phantom Gaming-Itx/ax Motherboard from ASRock - and a Coolermaster 750W Powersupply I also needed: - a ryzercable - a fanhub - and a few longer cables for the powersupply This is the biggest part, which was pretty dusty, like anything on the inside of the case. It looks pretty Janky with all the cables, tubes and giant condensators. But this was the state of the art in the 1950/60 from with this one is. The traces on the bottom are also not, what we are used to today. But back to the building of the pc. At first i needed to figure out, how to cool the thing. I decided, that i would pull in air through the fabric, which was in front of the speakers and push it out through a hole in the bottom. The fans are mounted on a flat piece of wood and srewed into place. After that i needed to place the components in the case. My goal was, that you cant see anything unusual from the front. I think i got it mostly. For the graphicscard my choices were to put the ports on the side or on the top, because it was way too long, to have the ports in the back. I choose to put the ports on the top, because the top is one of the only flat surfaces on the case, witch would make it way easyer to mount it. So i cut a hole for the card on the top. To fit the card in i also needed to remove the shroud on it. With the graphicscard in place there were only two places for the motherboard. I put it on the left because why not. The cooling on the cpu is bad. I know that. If you got an idea, how the cooler can be rotated, you can comment it. While we are on the part of the cooling. The airflow isnt that great. There are four intake fans, but the cloth is really thick. I thought there wold be more air going through it. The powersupply was mounted on the other side and all was cabled up. To turn it on i wanted to be able to use one of the buttons/levers on the front beacause they have a really great feeling and sound. The problem here was, that they stay in place, till you push an other lever to reset them. So i experimented with an extra circuit to turn it into a pulse. In the end i damaged the mechanism of the levers, so that they dont stay in place and go back as soon as you release them. Now for the finished thing. If you dont look close enough it isnt that bad.
  11. From the album: "Dell project"

See, a totally normal dell dimension. No i7, no gaming graphics cards.
  12. So I managed to acquire quite a unique case similar to the one Linus built in the sleeper series called hubert. So the plan is to upgrade this case so that I can use it for eSports events up and down the UK whilst keeping the retro / sleeper look. I am currently half way through the project. A new front panel setup has been installed replacing the old USB and FireWire ports for 4 USB 3.0 gen 1 ports. Also had all new barrels fitted so the old locking mechanism works again. But the main focus of this project is to rebuild the front plate of the case to hold a triple radiator configuration with enough vent holes to cover cooling the hardware. Cutting out part of the front plate was a pain but doable with an angle grinder. To ensure that there is enough strength, I have used 1mm thick steel plating to reinforce the .5mm thick steel of the original plate. Was a pain to fit and secure correctly but is now ready to mark out the new fan positions then drill them out. The only things left to do is save up enough to get some killer hardware in there and give the inside a fresh coat of paint. Just need a name to suit it!
  13. I want start a new build from the group up and have very limited knowledge on how to do so. My idea is using an old Emachines EL1358G-51w chassis and start from there. I am just learning that there are difficulties such as form factor and would like advice as from where to start from there before buying anything. So I would appreciate any advice or input!
  14. I have wanted a sleeper laptop for a while now, and working on so many older computers, I see a lot of opportunities. My only problem, is that the cpu's in older laptops really suck. For example, I had this Hp Pavilion Dv6 from about 2010. Great laptop, maxed it out with a tb hdd, and 16 gigs of ram. But the best one I could get (the one I already had in it) was an Amd a8 of some kind, not good. Even running basic programs like solitare and diablo 3 were running 100 percent of the cpu. Was wondering what a good laptop for one would be. I think a Lenovo Thinkpad w531 would work great. But the best I can get in one is a 4th gen i7. Better, but still terrible. For reference I am looking for something 15 or more inches, about 1/2 or more inches thick, hdmi support (preferably), and a good cpu. Preferably not newer than 6yrs Thanks.
  15. Hi, I need a replacement piece for my desktop's front panel. I've attached pictures with measurements. If you have a 3D printer and are bored and kind enough to make and send this part, you would be a PC building hero.
  16. Hello I have a project of turning an old mini tower https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Case-PC-Desktop-Fujitsu-Siemens-SCALEO-P-Alimentatore-ATX/333532363727?hash=item4da813fbcf:g:p3oAAOSw-~peXBkq can be seen here to an oldschool sleeper type of build, but im having a question where i would appreicate some input, since the pc does not have an front intake so to say and the 3 holes on the bottom wont be enough for a proper intake on my opinion, im wondering how should i do the intake on that case, drill some holes do the top of the case and add a fan with a dustfilter for intake? if anyone has a better idea im all ears... ltt could do a video about cooling for older cases.
  17. I've always been an SFF and 'bang-for-buck' enthusiast, and now that I have more down time than usual, I thought I'd build a PC that would scratch both itches. Money is tight, at least in terms of what I can spend, and of course SFF only makes that problem worse. Either way, I want to make a decent sleeper build that's small enough to just tuck into a bag and travel with. I've been thinking about this project for a long time, and I'm finally committed to making it happen. So, without further ado, here's the list of parts I'm planning on using: PCPartPicker Part List: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/jC7kmg CPU: Ryzen 5 1600AF ($85.00) CPU Cooler: Reeven Vanxie 24.82 CFM CPU Cooler ($19.99) Motherboard: MSI B450I GAMING PLUS AC Mini ITX AM4 Motherboard ($119.99) Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws V 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600 Memory ($79.99 @ Newegg) Storage: Sabrent Rocket 512 GB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive ($49.99) Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 1650 SUPER 4 GB AERO ITX OC Video Card PSU: HDPLEX 200W DC-ATX ($62.50) Total: $417.46 The parts in italics are ones that I still am deciding on, and the others I either already have or have already purchased. In light of the upcoming 3rd Gen Ryzen 3 processors I will likely wait on the CPU purchase until those are available. You may have noticed the PSU choice, and that's because of the sleeper part of this build. It will be built in this: Now, now, I know that Xbox PCs are commonplace, but while this isn't my first USFF build, it will be the first one in which I'll have to mod my case. I think it'll be a fun and interesting experience, at least I certainly hope so. I was inspired by the Dreamcast Sleeper Build done by @Ross Siggers but I'm definitely not going to attempt something as ludicrous as that, so the Xbox 360 E was my first choice, given that it's the only console I own and rather out of date. It also only works half the time so it's about time to retire the poor thing. At 4.4L externally it's already the smallest of the 360 lineup, and at just over 3.3L on the inside I really wish Microsoft had been wiser with their use of the space inside. Here you can see visually that, from the outside, there appears to be plenty of room with the ITX sized component choice. But on the inside, once that pretty plastic shell has been removed, erm, it's rather tighter than I'd like. Regardless, on paper there's enough room for the parts and I'm sure that if I imagine it hard enough, it must come true! Time to break out the Dremel. Onwards!
  18. Hi! This will be my first pc build and to cut costs and get the sleeper aesthetic I'm using the case from a compaq presario from 2001 and I wanted to know if anyone who's already done this or something similar knows if I'll be able to fit an M-ATX motherboard and an ATX PSU in the case without having to make any changes like cutting or drilling the case. This is the case I'm talking about: Sorry there's no pictures of the inside.
  19. Hey guys, I am busy building a sleeper gaming pc and after install all of my components it didn't boot. I decided to switch to a lower power gpu (8800gt i believe) and went to 2 sticks of 1gb ram each. Even so the system is not booting or showing anything on my screen, nor does it beep for any code. The rest of the system is a tx650w psu and a q6600. Thanks in advance for the help!

  21. I just wanted to share this with you guys really quick. I needed another laptop to play around with. Not something to replace my surface pro, but something I can beat up on and use a fair amount of VMs for my classes. I didn't have a particular model of laptop in mind, so I just sifted through ebay for an intel 2nd/3rd gen or newer laptop. I found this beauty. It was a Panasonic Toughbook. I did a tiny bit of reading up and found out this series of laptops is one of those 'rugged' ones for the military. This one came with an i5 and 6gb of RAM. At $100, it was enough to do what I need it to. So I received it today, and it turns out it has a few surprises up its sleeve. For one, the thing has a touchscreen (resistive, but still a surprise for something like this). It has a stylus and a tablet mode. I don't plan on using these features, but just found it quirky and kinda cute tbh. Also, unbeknownst to me, this thing has two freakin' batteries in it. And they get like 4 hours a piece. I haven't tested the batts fully yet, but it looks like it would indeed last longer than my surface pro 3. Or at the very lest match it. I'm kinda falling in love with this thing now. IDK, I may want to make it my main laptop when I'm done with school. Either way, this particular laptop is cool as heck and has character. It kinda has that charm the older dell inspiron in the 2000s had. I like that it's a little beat up and that this is the kind of machine I could start plastering stickers on.
  22. Hey Guys! About a year ago i found an old Norwegian built Cinet PPI-400 computer at the factory i work at. It was to be thrown away as it very old and outdated. I instantly fell in love with the look and story behind the computer (It had a very important job as an engineering pc for one of our main PLC's) I took it home and started pulling it apart. (Sry for blurry image) I disassebled my livingroom pc, so i could put the parts from that one into this one! I'll list the specs from that one later on in the post! As i progressed with the disassembly, i noticed that backplate standards were not a thing back then, so i had to grind open a hole with an anglegrinder to be able to able to fit a modern Motherboard... Damnit! The powersupply placement is also kinda wierd... it's placed right across the motherboard, so the fan on the psu and the cpu almost touch on the new build... but it'll work untill i eventually rebuilt it to watercooling Now for some more photos of the building: This is the new motherboard with a GTX 650ti mounted on it (upgraded to 1060 now) And yeaaa... the rear I/O sucks... i know And look at this!! Why is this not a thing anymore!?!?!? Most clever Motherboard tray i have ever seen! Here is the build done! (with old GPU) A usb 3.0 frontplate and a couple of upgrades later, this little champ is more powerful than my main gamingrig The old drives for diskettes and cd doesn't work i'm afraid... Because IDE I've also mounted a couple of fans... one in the front, and one on the left side panel. The temps looks promising and it performs awesome on my 4k television Specs are now: GPU: Asus gtx 1060 Phoenix MOBO: Asrock Z79M (Intel Pentium Anniversary edition) Processor: Intel I5 4690K RAM: 1stk 8GB Crutial Ballistix Sport Low profile PSU: Corsair HX620W Storage: 500gb HDD and 120GB SSD Please ask questions! Thanks
  23. Hey I am trying to build a sleeper pc, any tips on doing so. Thanks in advance.
  24. Hi guys, I'm here to plan my next build. Currently, I'm sitting on a Sleeper HP Desktop ( i5-2400, 1050Ti, 8GB RAM ). I currently have some money in hand, and wonder if I could get something good with this. So I have $500AUD ( which equals 384USD, 289 Pounds, 329EUR, 494CAD as of 8:23PM 1/11/2017 AEST ) I don't really expect much of a performance boost because it is surely a small amount of money. I'd prefer switching to a Micro-ATX case, as I usually move the desktop around and ATX is kinda heavy and Mini-ITX seems expensive. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks!
  25. So, I know this isn't a crazy overkill computer or the most beautiful thing ever, but I think it's fun that I've got "decent" hardware crammed into this stock Best-Buy-Special-TM Asus case. Figured you guys might like to look at it. i7 7700 Gigabyte GTX 1070 G1 Gaming 12GB DDR4 2800 Asus M32CD4-K (From the original prebuild) Corsair TX650M Adata 256GB SSD 2X 7200RPM 1TB HDD's Additional 120M Thermaltake Riing blue LED fan Looks pretty inconspicuous Until you notice the fan. The screw holes on the fan *magically* lined up with the grill holes, and screwed right on from the inside. Lucky! Did what I could with cable management, even though plenty was added, it's still heaps better than how it originally came. Yeah that's a pokemon poster. Sorry for reflections on it, but I had to use flash. Black desk + black stuff + shitty room lighting. The motherboard didn't have any extra fan headers, so the added fan is just running from the PSU via an adapter. I'll get a fan splitter at some point so I can control it. Also, I plan on getting some form of low-profile CPU cooler as opposed to the stock one. It isn't terrible, but it hits about 85-90 under full load for any extended period of time.
