  1. I'm looking a switch to put in before my router as the one they supply has good coverage but it only has a gigabit ethernet output and my house has two routers as the walls are VERY thick by brick and access points don't work even when in its in the next room. We have a single cable that goes to the other side of the house but as said it only gets gigabit connection, I have 900mbps in so obviously I don't near that speed on the other side of the house
  2. Let me give you a simple overview of the Specs ( Notghing too special here): Supermicro - A1SRi-27f8F embedded Atom Processor 8 cores 8 Threads clocked at 2.4GHz 16GB DDR3 1600 ECC Ram 1 Pcie Riser to nvme with a 256GB boot drive 300W SFX PSU 80PLUS Fractal design Array R2 Mini-ITX Silent Series 140mm fan on the front 5x 4TB WD Red HDDs 1x 2,5" Samsung 850Evo with a 3.5" adapter I couldnt really find anything else at home to keep the sata cables together my zipties had just ran out, so i opted for duct tape The ram is sodimm as you can see, so to upgrade to 64GB it would be expensive unfortunately The IO shield is missing, since it didnt come with an IO shield, as the mainboard came in a gateway chassi i.e propiertary io shield built into the case But I ordered one, and it should arrive in couple days hopefully In conclusion: The Mainboard is well suited for any task you throw at it. I have 2 of these, one is built into my pfsense, and I got to say, having so many ethernet ports built into the mainboard makes things much easier. I ran truenas on the system, as well as ubuntu server for testing. But I will decide on the OS after I try unraid, since I only get positive reviews on that. Xpenology - maybe, but im kinda hurt already from synology system, so well see PS. Many might say that I should opt out the pcie to nvme for an 10gbit nic, yes youre probally right, but I still need to purchase a appropriate switch for that.
  3. So I recently aquired a 3950X. I knew going in that it would be a hot chip. But my Zalman CNPS20X [Noctua Fans] isn't cutting it. I could go AIO but I figured why not go for it and make a custom loop. In my personal aesthetics I dont like the normal reservoirs. They're a little clunky. Now, 5.25" Bay Reservoirs.. Oh man. These things are the bees knees. I love the cleaner look that they can provide and give you room for drives and long long GPUs. My issue is finding one. These things are rare. From a more by gone era of computing. I really want this one. Link: https://www.frozencpu.com/products/16942/ex-res-421/XSPC_Twin_D5_Dual_525_Bay_Clear_Reservoir_-_w_Dual_MCP655_Series_Pumps_Installed.html?gclid=CjwKCAjwkN6EBhBNEiwADVfya3TESdjzTK2mJxGciSPXCUr0RYkn3bAThyPfpxa5iMF45I1QDu8eLRoCI0kQAvD_BwE#blank The pumps installed preferably. Its been an age since Ive heard of Frozen CPU. I don't know if they're still around. Anyone who has any leads to one please let me know. I would love to start clocking this chip soon. Thank you all!
  4. Budget (including currency): Under $600 USD Country: USA Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Mostly office programs and video calls/recording Other details My dad's current computer is close to death and I would like to build him a new one. He is an accounting professor so he has a lot of video calls and records lessons for his students. He does not do any video editing. He also uses Microsoft Excel a lot. Other than that he mostly browses the internet and does sudoku like things. Here is my current spec list for the computer i want to build. This would be my first build so any and all suggestions would be appreciated. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/nBZNDq

  6. so, long story short, just rebuilt my system after a CPU RMA (all other components stress tested OK in other systems) and now I have this annoying system wide micro stutter symptoms: every half second or so, I get a stutter in all video output. this affects games, video, cursor movement, etc. doesnt occur in bios, and wasnt there in the windows installer either. things ive tried: update/clean install of the following drivers/software Chipset, GPU, Network, BIOS fresh windows install, installed all updates and drivers/control software (geforce experience, armory crate etc) system specs: mobo: asus strix b450 f ii CPU : freshly RMA'd AMD 5800x GPU : asus strix 3070 (non TI) RAM : Trident Z Royal 4000MHz Cooler: ASUS strix LC ii 240mm ARGB PSU : 1000W seasonic focus gold SSD : Kioxia KBG40ZNV1T02 (1TB, ~2GBPS rated) (my wd sn850 crapped itself so I stripped this out of an HP envy I use as a server) intel wifi 6E m.2 card Displays : 1440p 165 Hz running on DP 1080p 144Hz running on DP (normally 2 of these, but 1 rn due to a misshap with an airsoft gun and a freind) 4K 60Hz running on HDMI peripherals asus ROG flare (the old one, cherry mx blue) logitech 502 hero cannon EOS REBEL t5 roland RUBIX 24 other components that are disconnected for troubleshooting rn include : asus blu ray drive (sata) WD baracuda 1TB hdd (sata) WD baracuda 2TB hdd (sata) crappy PNY 1TB sata ssd from walmart grandMA3 onPC node (moar RGB!) some USB hdds pioneer DDJ400 Blackmagic ATEM mini pro other random AVL gear depending on what gig made me have to lug my desktop out to a jobsite (stuff like CDJs, sound and lighting consoles, broadcast gear, etc) any suggestions are appreciated, as im at my wit's end here, and I really need this system to work lol
  7. Budget (including currency): £400 Country: UK Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Games like Fortnite, Minecraft or Roblox Other details : So basically I know how to build PCs so my friend asked me if i could build a PC for his daughter for christams with a budget of £400 (Around $526). The problem is I don't really have time to be looking through the internet for something reliable but cheap and checking the compatibility because I am a Uni student and have a lot of work to do so I need your help. Could anyone link me some good PC parts for a build around £400, it has to include a monitor, keyboard and mouse. I don't need anything super advanced or pro because like you see the games she is going to play on it are not that graphics heavy or anything, i just need the parts and i need them to arrive before christmas. Oh and don't worry about the building i build PCs before but if you find anything pre-built that might be worth the money then feel free to send it over as well, I would really appreciate your help
  8. Thermaltake S100 simple case mod So as a disclaimer right up front, i'm not a professional when it comes to PC case modding etc. but i recently really enjoy doing it and finding solutions for making things a bit more unique. with that said the mod i came up with here is rather simple and was born out of the need to repurpose the Thermatake S100 wich is actually meant to be used as an led/rgb cover for your RAM slots. the need to repurpose it came up because i didn't really account for how massive my Be Quiet Dark Rock 4 CPU cooler actually is and how much Space it takes up over the RAM slots before ordering the S100 (stoopid me) My curret case is the Be Quiet Silent Base 801 which has great base functionality and a design i love so i'm planning on further modding it in the future. Thermaltake S100 on Amazon Step #1: removing the the original "calmping/mounting" mechanism with a pair of side cutters which was fairly simple because the plastic is quite soft so there is not much force required to remove it. Step #2: removing the 4 screws on the back of the S100 and opening it up because i was going to mount it to the the HDD Slot covers that come included with my Be Quiet SB801. Step #3: lining up the backplate of the S100 to the position on the front of the HDD slot cover i wanted it to be in and using a very small screwdriver to poke through the scerwholes in the backplate to get the correct position for drilling the mounting wholes in the HDD cover. i ended up only doing 2 wholes to help with alingment because i was going to hot glue it on there anyway. Step #4: drilling the wholes for the tiny screws from the backplate of the S100 and screwing them in, to help with aligning everything. then i applied a fair amount of hot glue to the backplate of the S100 and carefully putting the HDD slot cover on top while evenly applying a good amount fo pressure for about 20 seconds so the hot glue had time to dry. and that is about it, i didnt' really aim for perfection here. you could go ahead an sand the edges of the cut off parts to make it more smooth but the thing is that you can't really see them when everything is mounted inside the case later on so i didn't really care about it that much. Here are some pics of the finished product! (i ended up making a second one because really liked the look and wanted to have a second one in my case) Step #5: finishing everything up by reinstalling the HDD covers to my case and doing some cable management. So thats it! i really like the look and making this little mod. hope you guys like it too and maybe it inspires you to repurpose something like i did. I'm really looking forward to making more case mods in the future. Let me know what you think! Cheers
  9. I am looking for a lightweight browser to use and am up for any recommendations on any browsers that have both low and cpu usage and are very minimalistic. Any recommendations?
  10. Everyone seems to have some odd box or odd setup with their led strip. I just want some 30cm strip, that plugs into sata or molex, thats it, any recommendations?
  11. I want to build a server but also want a gaming platform as well anyone got ideas on a remote desktop and storage server set up while still allowing gaming looking to have a 5 pc network and am an amd builder so any mobos and hardware let me know
  12. Hey - I am looking for some simple but useful smartwatch. I dont want any fancy fitness tracking and other features i wont use. I want something with always on display, SMS notifications and ability to hang the call. Thats pretty much it. Long battery life would be appreciated - something around 2 days. I was using Sony smartwatch 2, but now I cracked the display and I can't find something similar in the new body. I was looking at LG Watch style, but it is unfortunately not available in my country (all Europe). So any suggestions for me? Thanks and cheers
  13. Over the years, particularly the 2000's, I have been pretty lazy about my file storage system, and never really transferred the important files once a drive/pc was upgraded. I have been on a a bit of a binge and sorted most of the images in my internal drive with mostly memory. I now have about 6 old hard drives that I want to plug in to my hard drive dock and search for those irreplaceable photos and get them stored properly, (internal, external and cloud). Luckily they are all under 500GB Is there a good, free program out there that can search and show me image files of all file types? Would be awesome if it could do video files as well. Or should I stick to the explorer search function?
  14. Hello guys, Long time sub of LTT, first time forum user, long post up ahead, bewarned, thank you for your patience. This will be my first build, and I intend for it to be a long-term workhorse, to last at least 4 years, hope I don't need to mess around with it too much, mostly set and forget. I value 'easy'/'simple' builds, nothing should be a 'Linus' style, improvised solution, as I said, this needs to be a workhorse. Machine should be ready before June of 2017, but after February 2017 (I am fixing my room first). Assume I do not have any existing hardware/peripherals. Willing to buy some parts 2nd hand. Here we go: 1. Budget & Location Budget: At the moment hard to say, approximately AUD $ 2.6k, all-in (including all extras). I may be able to stretch slightly. Delayed purchase of some non-essential parts is possible (for instance, extra RAM). Location: Sydney, Australia. Variety of options for parts is not too bad, but probably not as great as USA, currency-wise, we're about 72 cents to the dollar vs USD. Climate can get quite hot during the summer heat waves - my location gets 40oC+ for quite a few days every year, and many days above 35oC. I expect to be able to operate this machine during those times, with limited loss in performance. Machine location: In my (small) room. Silence is going to be quite important. I do not need a fan-less build, I do not need dead silence, but as much as possible, the decibels should be reduced. 2. Aim I am an engineering research student, so my use case is probably not the 'normal' gamer/streamer type; I shall split this up in the my 4 primary use cases: Engineering simulation: Primarily I will be running Computational Fluid Dynamics simulations (CFD) on this machine, I will run the 'big' simulations at my university facility, but some of the 'smaller' projects and most of the meshing, I will run at home. Programs I plan to run are ANSYS Fluent and CFX, OpenFOAM and if I can get the license, Star CCM (maybe)... From past experience, I will need at least 16 GB of RAM for this. CPU parallelization is also a great booster of CFD workload, in some programs more than others. Expect this machine to be working for days at a time. Engineering modelling: CAD work, not 3D animation. Primary software packages are CATIA, Autodesk Inventor, Autodesk AutoCAD, Solidworks. From past experience, most decently powered PCs can do the job, so it shouldn't be too much of an issue. Engineering calculation: Programs like Matlab, and Excel. Any decently powerful CPU and more than 8GB of RAM should be enough, so I'm not concerned. Gaming: AAA titles - think Bioshock, Far Cry, Crysis, Civ 6, Metal Gear Solid V, Project Cars etc etc. I also love Skyrim and Fallout graphics mods, and will finally get to run the 'pretty' looking ones, hopefully, maybe... I'm don't *need* frame rates to be high, as long as they are > 30fps I'm happy. But I would love to run very high/ ultra graphics settings if possible, I love to look at pretty stuff. Planned resolution of ~1440p, not 4k. I do not play FPS' that often, so high fps counts not essential. Aside from all of this, I will be doing a lot of research work on this machine, so things like reading, lots of typing, more typing. haha. Occasional image and video editing. Also, Chrome tabs. Chrome tabs. 3. Monitors Space on my desk is limited, as I need to use my 15.6" laptop as well. Desk dimension is ~120cmx60cm. If I can, I would really love to run Ultrawide. Not sure if I should run 3440x1440, 2560x1080, or 2560x1440. Thoughts? As far as panel is concerned, IPS or LED is probably best, never been a fan of TN. Refresh rate doesn't need to be much higher than 75Hz?. Latency <10ms. Love accurate colours. If space does turn out to be an issue, or cost, compromise to 1080p is possible. 4. Peripherals + Others Mouse+keyboard: I would prefer a keyboard that is not mechanical, and relatively quiet. I do not mind mechanical, but the noise has been too annoying for me from past experience. The majority of my history with keyboards has been with laptop keyboards. Nothing particular for the mouse, prefer ambidextrous, simple, no extra buttons, scroll wheel essential, with click and side scroll a nice bonus. If there is a package that will also allow me to dock+charge+switch between my phone/laptop/desktop, that would be super awesome. Toss of a coin between wired or wireless to be honest. Sound: I'll use the stock motherboard sound with my existing speakers for now. Possible sound card in the far future, uncertain. Bay devices: Need card reader eventually, prefer BluRay drive as well for multimedia. Hard drive: I need storage much more than I need speed. Prepared to sacrifice SSD to save cost, CFD files can get very big and messy. Case: I don't care about looks. I care about ease of use, and silence. Best case scenario, mid-tower size. Currently looking at Define R5. Cooling is also important. Historically, dust seems to be a problem with my house and my room - dust filters and other dust minimization or ease of cleaning tricks are welcome. PSU: Don't need a tonne of power, only going for 1 GPU realistically, and non-OC CPU. Efficiency and silence will be key. I'm thinking 500-750W? OS: Will require Windows and Office. Wireless: Should need it, although nothing too fancy. 5. Why are you upgrading? I need more power for the work that I want to do. Also want to finally get a larger than 15.6" screen. Need more storage than my current laptop+ExtHDD setup can provide. 6. Extra Notes? USB Type C port on the front/top of the case is a nice bonus, planning for a new phone soon. No plans for OC of CPU or GPU. Currently unsure if GPU can help speed up the CFD simulations, or rather, what type of GPUs will speed it up - reading up on it. Small possibility of running 2 GPUs to speed up simulations, but prefer single GPU gaming. Not sure if I need ECC memory, I don't think the computers I have used for CFD in the past had it (except the big HPC server at my university), so I do not think ECC is necessary for this build. If someone here knows more, and points out flaws in my approach, I am willing to completely reassess my budget for a justified improvement in reliability/performance/silence etc. I'm not biased towards any brand, but Zen has gotten me excited, due to them likely having more cores given the similar price/power of i5s. As little RGB nonsense as possible, I find that shit annoying. Back-lit keyboard is acceptable but not necessary. Conclusion Once again, massive thanks for those who have stuck with the long post. I post lots of detail here to not waste time later. Thanks in advance for the feedback/opinions. TL;DR Need new PC build for 2.6k AUD, used for engineering simulation work and gaming. Building early 2017. Looking forward to your responses.
  15. I just started school and I'm having trouble with a program the loop works as intended except b=b+a; It was my belief that b=b+a; would add the value of "a" to "b" and as the program loops "b" would store the grand total of every "a" value calculated, but instead "b" ends up always equal to "a" Scanner UserInput = new Scanner(System.in); int input = UserInput.nextInt(); //input ==1234 int length = String.valueOf(input).length();//length ==4 while (length>0) { length--; int a = (int)( input/(Math.pow(10, length)));// a==1,a==2,a==3,a==4 int b = 0; b=b+a; //b should ==10 by the end of the loop 1+2+3+4 System.out.println("b Sum =" + b); //these 3 lines are just for debugging System.out.println ("a =" + a); System.out.println ("length" +length); input = (int)(input - (Math.pow(10,length)) * a); }
  16. Good Afternoon and Happy Saturday! I have an autistic brother-in-law (25) and he loves to make DVD's for us and the extended family. Unfortunately, the software he uses is causing issues with his PC making it unusable. (Viruses, malware, trojans,etc..) Can you guys recommend a simple, straightforward editing and DVD burning software that an autistic person can use. He is high-functioning on the spectrum (think around your average 10-11 year old,) so he can make simple deductions on how to use software, but it still needs to be easy to use.
  17. This is my basic setup for doing graphic design work. I am going to get a graphics card and jump up to 32 gigs of RAM shortly. New desk is under construction.
  18. Hi all, I am really struggling to find an EATX case for my upcoming 3970x build which will include the Aorus Master and a 160mm high Wraith Ripper. Every single case I look at seems to have no airflow with either glass or a flat plastic front with no grill, RGB and glass windows adding to the cost. I would just love a plain case with enough room, good airflow for intake, and no extras adding to the cost like RGB and glass side panels. I have looked up many cases and the Antec P101 has no frills but unfortunately I have heard the airflow is quite poor. My current case is the BeQuiet SIlent Base 800, which I have measured would probably fit an EATX motherboard in but it would be extremely tight at the bottom near the power supply and it would overhang all the cable management holes. Are there any cases that fit my criteria of a simple box with no frills and good airflow that don't break the bank? Thanks in advance
  19. Hi guys, I'm building a PC for my sister but we're stuck on the case selection. With future-proofing in mind, Im advocating getting a case with front USB-C ports. But getting an ATX case with that port AND no 'gamer' is turning out tough. Our current choice is the Fractal Define R6 USB-C, but it's quite pricey and a bit bigger than unsuitable alternatives. Can you point me in the right direction? Based in the netherlands fwiw. Thanks
  20. I'm designing a computer case at the moment and want your opinion. Does a modern computer need front i/o? Or anything in particular that you couldn't live without on the front of the case?
  21. Hello folks! I am looking into creating my own NAS, for backups of photos, videos and other files. Furthermore, I would like to be able to copy games from the NAS to other computers on the network, as then my friends coming over for LAN-parties won't have to download a gigantic patch (or a whole game for that matter) when we are about to play. P.S. This is meant as a Mini-ITX build, just to mention that. Do you folks have any suggestions for what OS to use and anything else related to getting a basic and simple NAS up and running? My planned specs for the NAS. (Do feel free to come with suggestions to potentially improve it): CPU: Ryzen 2200G MB: MSI B450I GAMING PLUS AC, Socket-AM4 RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3200MHz 16GB HDD: 2x WD Red 3TB 3.5" NAS HDD SSD: 1X Samsung 860 EVO 250GB Case: Fractal Design Node 304 Mini-ITX PSU: Open for suggestions, as I am not sure what would be the best for a NAS. Thank you very much for reading the post. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
  22. I'm doing up a "memory lab" for a local library. It's basically going to be a station where people can come in and convert old analog photos, videos etc to digital formats. I've already got a good scanner for photos and slides/negatives, but I'm looking for something to convert old VHS tapes. As largely elderly persons are going to be using this setup I want to keep it as simple as possible so I want to avoid the pc capture card route and go with a standalone dvd video recorder. It needs to be as push button as possible with as few steps as possible. So I'm looking for a dvd recorder for less than $700cdn that's reliable, in production for repair support in case of damage and reliable enough for public use. I can easily get a hold of a good VCR cheap so that's not a problem.
  23. Long story short: I got this Frigidaire Retro Mini Fridge that only holds 6 normal sized cans of soda, but is rather portable. I got it last year during a Black Friday sale and it's been pretty good to me... until the cooling fan died. I tore it apart and discovered it's made with some pretty simple components. I've always wanted to get into hobby electronics and I think this would be a good start. I don't want to just replace the fan, I want to upgrade the machine so it gets colder. Is there anyone who can help me, or at least point me to some good resources so I can learn by myself? Long story long: This is a relatively simple machine. It's small, compact, lightweight, comes with a handle for easy carrying, and even has a port for a cigarette lighter in a car. This thing is made to run off of 12v car batteries, so again, a pretty simple machine. Here are the internal components themselves in their entirety: The fridge contains 3 main things: A 3cm square Peltier cooling unit (left) An 8x8x2cm fan (upper center) A circuit board with a whack ton of heatsinks and capacitors. (right) I didn't know about Peltier cooling units when I opened this thing up, and I thought that little white square was black magic. Coincidentally enough, Linus Tech Tips uploaded a video where they used Peltier's to cool a PC, to some degree. Basically they move electrons from one side of the unit to the other. Moving the energy away from one side causes that side to get cold and the other side to get hot. While it's not great for large scale cooling, it's great for small scale applications like this. The fridge actually gets decently cold too. Of course, as you can see the Peltier unit is connected to a FAT heatsink (2 actually, the second isn't pictured but it's a solid 3.6x.3.6x2cm metal block and the unit is sandwiched between them) and on the other side of that heatsink is the fan, which of course points to the back of the fridge. To my understanding, if I wanted to upgrade the cooling capacity of this fridge, I would need either a bigger or more powerful Peltier unit, or maybe give the current one more power, of course I would need a bigger fan to carry more heat, and then maybe remove something from the circuit board so that it can run more power (because the units themselves need more power, otherwise I'm just throttling everything and ruining the point). Again, that is MY understanding of what I would need to do to upgrade this thing, but I am NOT a professional, and I don't know much about electronics, especially custom stuff like this. That's why I turned to the forums. If I were to try and go at this, I'm thinking best case scenario I get no perceptible difference in temperature, most likely scenario I would brick the fridge and have to throw it out, worst case scenario I burn my house down. I want as much help as people are willing to give me because I wanna make sure I get this right.
  24. Hey guys! I'm new to the LTT forums and I'm new to C#, Watched 1 Bob Tabor course aprox ~7 hours long about a week and a half ago. I just wanted to see what you guys thought of my code, give me pointers etc. Like the title suggests its a simple Tic-Tac-Toe game that took around an hour or so to program. Also if you have any experience with XNA/Monogame or Unity3D Please tell me where I should go to learn more about either (I'd like to get into game programming).
  25. Hello my friends! Ok so recently i got motivated to do Youtube videos, but you cant do Youtube videos if you cant even simple edit right? So i want from you guys to recommend me begginer if possible free video editing software. I want to do some Video game montages for the start of my Youtube carrier, later one maybe i will swich to something else but for now till i find the right thing i plan doing that kind of stuff. P.S will be awesome if you guys recommend me recording software aswell. [Just for more info if someone interesed in what i want to, currently plan doing some League of Legends big plays and kills montages i think most of you know this popular game, so anyways] Thank you all in advance my friends, best of luck! I also apologize if Off topic is not the right place to post this.
