Why has noone ever built a computer with frosted smart glass side panels before? The idea hit me yesterday and it seems pretty cool to me! Say, you have a 900D and you replace the side window panel with black smart glass, so when the computer is not powered on it looks like it has no side window, its all just a black plate like the other side of the case. But when you turn on the computer and power the glass it suddenly goes transparant, revealing all your slick custom watercooling and stuff inside. I am going to build this next year for sure! Video demo for those who have not seen the concept. http://vimeo.com/81322879 Would any of you want to try this?

So my computer is in a rough state right now and has problems with cooling. I want to put my case fans below my gpu(the gpu's fan is broken and doesn't spin at all) so it doesn't thermal throttle. In doing so, I had the idea of removing the side panel so the rest of the system gets "passive" cooling. So my question is, will my computer need front and back fans if the side panel is off or will it be relatively fine. (btw my cpu is fine and doesn't have any problems)

I'm trying to figure out the best method to clean the glass side panel on my PC case. It had built up some dust on it, so I took it off and wiped the dust off with a rag. However, I noticed when I put the panel back on that there were some smudges left behind on the inside. I took the panel back off and cleaned both sides with glass cleaner. However, that seems to have left behind residue from the cleaner drying. What's the best way to clean off the panel where it won't leave behind any smudges or residue?

So I was browsing the forums and was inspired to try something. I have a couple sheets of 3mm cork for putting under floorboards. I wanted to see how well it would work as a sound dampening material. It doesn't make a noticeable difference but I can only judge by ear and didn't cover much of a panel, out of fear of it interfering with my air cooler. The only real issue is that the cork is crumbly but its just wood so it should be fine. I didn't bother with the other side as the mobo back plate and has enough clearance issues enough that I can't rout cables back there much less add a piece of cork. So it probably wouldn't have made a difference even with professional foam. tldr. It doesn't make a noticeable difference but I only covered a small portion of one side panel, not bad for a 5 min mod. The materials, I ended up also using scissors to cut the cork but the exacto knife was still nice for marking out my lines. I after cutting it to size a glued it in with a hot glue gun. The hot glue should detach nicely should I ever want to remove it. The panel back in my case, hardly even noticeable. particularly once it goes back into its cabinet.

Hi, I have got a Zalman Z9 Neo case with a windowed side panel. The title pretty much says it all, but When I clean the side panel it is crystal clear but then after about a day marks will form on it. I am assuming these marks are dust, as they come off with a cloth. Any tips on how to stop these marks forming? Thanks

Hey guys, So my girlfriend spilt some coleslaw on my side panel while I was modding my system - the side panel has been off to one side of my office for a couple weeks. I clean everything up today to find it. She had wiped it off with an Andrex wet wipe - and put it back. Subsequently, there are massive smears all over the side panel. Please advise on how the hell to get it off - nothing I have in the house will fix it. Please note, it's the rear side panel, so it's not the windowed one. TL;DR How to get grimy stuff off a side panel.

Hello browsers of the internet: I have a normal version of the S340, and I decided it was time to get myself a custom side panel with tempered glass instead of the horrible acrylic the case comes with. Here is how I did it and the end result. The mod still has a lot of room for improvement, but I'm fairly happy with the results. Materials used: -Tempered glass with a medium tint film, 43 x 44.5cm --> 150 mxn (8 USD from my local glass workshop) -Aluminum flat profile 38x3mm, 4m long --> 160 mxn (8.50 USD from my local metal workshop) -Aluminum L profile 12x12mm, 5m long, 1mm thick --> 100mxn (5.30 USD) -Aluminum C profile 0.9x0.9mm, 5m long, 1mm thick --> 120mxn (6.40 USD) -Small tube of resistol 5000 (high strength contact glue) --> 60mxn (3.20 USD) -Small tube of sealing silicone --> 80mxn (4.25 USD) Grand total: 35.65 USD + a bunch of unused aluminum and adhesives Tools: -Metal hacksaw with handle -A couple of vise grips -Spatula (to spread the adhesives) -Metal files -4mm drill bit and drill Build Process: This build is very simple and can be completed in a couple of hours. The only lengthy bit, is waiting for the adhesives to fully cure in order to proceed. First off, cut the flat aluminum profile into 2 lengths of 43cm and 2 more lengths of 37cm. These 4 bits will make the frame to which the glass panel will be attached. Next up, cut 30cm of the C shaped profile, this will handle most of the weight of the side panel so that it can rest on the bottom of the case structure. Finally, cut the L- shaped profile to get a length of 44.5cm. This one will be attached to the back of the panel and will hold everything in place with thumbscrews. I recommend you approximate the distances with a couple of mm to spare and then file the pieces down to the correct lengths. Its easier to remove material than to add it! With all of the cutting done, attach all of the flat profiles to the glass panel using the sealing silicone. first, clean both the glass and the aluminum, then apply a seam of silicone to the aluminum and spread it with the spatula. Finally place the aluminum on the glass. Rinse and repeat for all 4 pieces and use small clamps to hold them in place for 24 hours. Next up, focus on the bottom part of the panel and make a mark 9mm over the lower edge. Attach the C shaped profile on this mark using the contact adhesive. Make sure you read and follow the instructions for your adhesive, since this bond will be supporting most of the weight of the structure. Let it cure for as long as needed. Grab the L profile and make 2 holes 44mm from the edges. Attach this piece to the back of the side panel and let the glue cure. Congrats! the build is done! Let me know what you think (aside from wonky) and please share any improvements you come up with. Thanks for reading!

So in a few months I'm going to be doing a build in an NZXT s340 Elite, and I am currently taking an engineering class, in which we have access to laser cutter and such tools and machines. The teacher has told the class that glass can be engraved, and I don't see why tempered glass couldn't be as well. So I'm wondering if anyone has engraved a tempered glass side panel successfully that came out well. Thanks for the help.

Has anyone personally tried to cut a window into the side panel of a Fractal R4 Define? I know people have done it online, but I'm looking to see if anyone has any personal experience or advice they could give me. I was thinking of cutting a large square-window from the side panel and using either a thin glass sheet or acrylic plastic to make the effect of a window. I really like the R4 Define look, but I'm starting to wish I had a window. Don't want to just get rid of the R4 if I can mod it a bit. Thanks!

Hi guys, I finished my build and everything is pretty ok except I am worrying about PCI E cable which goes under the gpu fan (Cable is 2 cm away from fan) and my side panel is hard to put on, but with a bit of force I managed to put it. Power Supply that I'm using is Corsair CX450M which has flat cables except 24pin and cpu cable. Some flat cables are folded with zip ties (don't know is that a good way to call it) and I don't know is that good. So I want to know are those problems or I can leave it like that. Stay strong guys!

My graphics card (rx580) runs very hot, and I just found out that all of the exhaust from the fans blows directly into the side panel which increases the temp really fast. I don’t want to keep the panel off but it drops my temps by 20C instantly when I remove it.
-
So my cpu and gpu temps are high even when i play easy games to run like csgo. I thought that removing the side panel would be a good thing to do to improve temps. I just wanted to know if there will be any long term or short term effects on my pc components. I also have 4 fans but i cant move them anywhere to improve temps because there are no other places to move them and the airflow to the fans are trash since they are blocked by a glass window at the front. P.S i cant buy another case for a while and this one was a gift. Thank you for your guys help

Hi Alll... I want to ask if you think that I should put the side covers on my cpu casing rather than leave them off... At the moment it's off so it can be cool by the fan that's blowing to me. Should i put the side panel back on or just let it be?

I took a large piece of acrylic out of a 20 year old Mitsubishi. This weekend I’m going to try and cut it with a circular saw and attach it into a custom mount for my case. I’ll then be adding AA powered rgb leds to the inside of my case. If you want I can try to make a guide to building the side panel.

Transparent Side Panel Displays A startup campaign on indiegogo that takes case modding to the next level. Transparent side panel displays aimed for all cases and colors! Have custom images and video play through! Short Summary Probably unlike most campaigns this one started with nothing. No funding and no team to help bring this idea to light. Sure, the idea can be seen in fancy companies today that can easily do what ive done such as LG. But as a PC gamer myself I felt the need to strive into even more ways to customize what a computer is today. Why focus on just a few LEDs to make a computer case look fancy when I could focus on an image of many pixels displayed on my computer but still letting me enjoy the internals of my beloved computer. Through saving up and working alone figuring out how i can make this product come to life I have developed my first prototype which still amazes me every time I still look at it and how elegant and how it has come to be just what ive imagined. But, i didnt want to stop there at my personal experience, I knew that this idea was important to me and it gained so much interest by my family and friends of how amazing it looked to see a floating image but still see behind it. I wanted to give this to everyone, I wanted to be able to allow people to customize their computer to the max level possible with such ease and simplicity but also way more affordable. Some companies out there have a similar project, but like all a major companies they come with a hefty, un-necessary price tag that no gamer would pay for; did i mention they dont sell these separately, that they only have one case and that it all costs over $4,000? I thought it was about time i reached out to as many people as possible, their case and their budget. Overall, I still struggle with nothing. With any amount and contribution im pushing forward making this idea possible for everyone out there rather than just me and by introducing more and more innovative ways to continue on what this product can do. What I need is a lot, im one person with a dream and I need your help to allow me to continue on making this a full product.

I got some smuges on on my side panel so I used some dry toilet paper to get them off. After this i noticed that I could kinda stick the toiket paper to the panel. I also saw that an unormal amout of dust started to get stuck to it. This make me think its ESD. Should this worry me?

So I have a Phanteks P400 and I noticed there were a lot of scratches on the cheap side panel. I knew I should have gotten the TGE but didn't think I needed it. Has anyone ever replaced their side panel window with glass? It seems easy to do with the P400 as all you have to do is bend these clips and then hook the glass on and re bend.

To those who have/had a Fractal Design Core 1300 case, I need the measurements of the side panel. I will be upgrading and making some modifications to my brother's 2-year old pc as a surprise early Christmas gift, and one mod in particular is making a side panel out of plexiglass/acrylic sheet. But I need the correct size of the side panel so I can cut and prepare the plexiglass/acrylic. I can't find a Core 1300 case that I can measure near where I live, and websites just show the measurements of the whole case, not the side panel Any help will be very much appreciated
