Hello LTT community, I'm currently attempting to see if this is possible or not with my current hardware for networking. Currently right now I am using a Shaw cable modem connected via coax. It has wifi capabilities as well. I have another router, which is an Asus Router RT-AX92U and I want to know is it possible to connect the ASUS router wirelessly to the Shaw Cable modem from another room in the house so that it can be used for direct connection to the PC. Or do I have to connect the router to the modem directly to have any form of internet access ? Thank you

Hi everyone, I'm hoping this post will be the lucky one. I'm trying to sort out a very frustrating issue with my home networking that has put me on a path of endless frustration for the last month. It has been a rollercoaster ride of confusion and probably some tears. Maybe a lot of tears. And more swearing. So here's my current setup: Shaw (Canada) Arris XB6 Cable Modem with a hardwire connection to a TP-Link Deco M4/E4 Mesh Network (5 devices placed around the house, access point mode) and a wireless connection to a Netgear extender (more on this later) Last month when trying to get Shaw to send me the new Wifi 6 version of their modem, they required me to do a factory reset of the modem. Before this happened, while things weren't perfect I was in relative peace. Everything worked. Nothing dropped. Other than power outages I almost never lost internet connectivity. Once I did the factory reset, it set into play a domino effect that chained into devices being unable to connect to the Deco mesh network (hence why I have the Netgear extender) and hours upon hours of troubleshooting and messing with my network to try and get things back up and working. Which I didn't ever properly. I have 2 2019 iPads that cannot connect to the mesh network, a 2014 iPad that can't while other iPads, an Air 2, A 2017 Pro - connect just fine. Some Echo devices connect without issue, and some will absolutely not connect at all. Same with IOT cameras, nothing I can do will connect them to the mesh network, they will begin to connect and then die, unable to be reconnected. 2 nights ago I was trying to watch a movie on our Apple TV 4k, deeply unhappy with my networking situation, I lost internet on my cable modem. Now the setup, to be clear, is that I have a unmanaged switch plugged into the back of the modem, and into that I have a few wired devices along with my wireless mesh network (previously I had the mesh plugged into the modem, and the switch plugged into the mesh - but I thought I might be able to fix something by changing it to Shaw Modem --> Switch --> Mesh. Obviously not. Anyway, after multiple restarts, the SECOND I would try and play the movie again, it would crash the network. Pause it? Crash. Skip back 10 seconds? Crash. I SOLVED this by unplugging a few recent IOT devices (a few smart plugs and an Echo) and boom, no more connection drops. However this doesn't solve the underlying issue that I still am struggling with understanding. The first is why the hell the drops keep happening, and the second is why the hell my Deco network seems to be limiting the ability for a very select few devices to connect. I had the brilliant idea when this happened to modify my setup slightly. My goal was to change the subnet of the Shaw cable modem. Then to connect to it a Wifi 6 Router and use that to power the Mesh network, and to give some love to my gaming PC with Wifi 6, and to future proof. Upon receiving the modem which was only available online (the Netgear RAX20) I discovered haunting words on the front of the box: "Supports UP TO 20 devices". But my plan is to try and spread everything across the spectrum. I just don't know if the Netgear router will work for what I'm trying, or if ANYTHING will. I also don't fully understand networking with regards to the device limit. For example, if I'm using the Mesh network and connections are spread throughout each unit, does this no longer count towards the total devices connected? Does this in effect disperse the network? In the end, what I expect to see will be: Shaw Modem (192 subnet) --> Netgear Router (10 subnet) in DMZ to prevent double nat --> Mesh Deco and Netgear Extender On the main shaw modem, I will connect close and local IOT devices that don't use much bandwidth and are relatively nearby. The Netgear router will connect any wifi 6 devices and will connect all of the most important hardwired devices (my NAS, Apple TV and PS5) I am hoping this change will somehow unlock those other devices to work with the mesh network. I spent many hours with TP-Link support, to the point that they connected remotely to a computer on my network and ran a network monitor to see what was happening with my connection, although in the end they never could figure it out. One of the other incredibly weird issues is that I could no longer hardwire my Xbox One X to the network. At all. I could also not connect it via wifi to the mesh network, but I COULD connect it via wifi to my shaw modem directly, where it's currently sitting. I would do connection tests and while I could do an okay job downloading (about 20 mbps under what I expected) uploads stalled and didn't work. And it really seems that's what's happening to my other devices, they can START the process of downloading, but uploading always fails. And I've tested DNS settings, you name it and I've tried it. Even set the Deco units into Router mode to see if that would help, unfortunately the one thing that I can't do is turn the Shaw modem into bridged mode, as the cable boxes that are connected need the wifi radio in order to actually connect. Sorry for the long post, but I'm really at the end of my rope. I can't switch providers as in my neighborhood, Shaw is the ONLY game in town to provide service over 70mbps, and with all my devices that's far from enough.

sumofus.org is saying that Bell, Cineplex, Rogers, and Shaw "are pushing to create an internet "blacklist" of certain websites that all internet service providers in Canada would legally have to block.", called the "Internet Piracy Review Agency" (IPRA), with no court oversight. According to sumofus.org the vote is happening tomorrow. Currently there is a petition on sumofus.org to "stop the corporate control over our internet". In the article on huffingtonpost.ca, comments from the companies behind this push seem to unanimously say that this is to fight against piracy. Rob Malcolmson (senior VP at Bell) said "Many of the most prominent global players in the piracy ecosystem operate out of Canada as a relative safe harbour, and Canadians made 1.88 billion visits to piracy sites last year.". I think it's pretty obvious that this is a bad thing for us consumers and should be stopped. This is a very slippery slope leading towards the banning of any site, not just those meant for pirating. Since there is no court oversight to this blacklist it probably wouldn't be that hard, or take them that long, to start using this blacklist to their advantage. Imagine if Shaw and Rogers (owners of Canadian streaming service Shomi) used their influence to put any competitor (such as Netflix) on this blacklist. Other sites covering this topic include michaelgeist.ca, and iphoneincanada.ca.

So I have been with shaw now for about a year and with speed tests I have notices big drops a quite a few times. I was wondering witch is better? Shaw or telus? Because I know telus offers some good plans and I am not sure about this but the lady at Telus told me shaw tends to have like a shared network where as telus basicly its your own network in your own home. I am trying to decide if I should switch thanks for any input if location matters. Edmonton,Alberta area is where id be hooking it up. I will be doing online gaming on my pc.

What alternatives do i have to these pos isps? I live near vancouver in nanaimo.

My internet goes limited every 1-5 minutes! It does this at night (10PM or later) and seems to never end. I am using wifi and using cables is not an option! HELP ME!

Just noticed that this is quite long. You should get the main Idea if skimmed So I am so confused on ISPs in Canada. I am in the States and moving to Canada (Calgary,AB) fairly soon. In the States I can pick between Fast crap and Slow Crap. I have checked out several ISPs and see I have well more options but then I noticed the small print with download limits etc.. Which made me kinda iffy then I checked others and they all had it. I am an extreme downloader downloading lots daily. If I do happen to go over what would happen am I shut off does my Bill increase? I am not sure US has that they probably do they might just be better at Hiding it. I am also wondering what ISPs are more "server" friendly. I have a small gaming server I have setup for Minecraft Ventrillo several other games as well maybe 30 so users at a time on them all just a few friends Co-Workers etc. Max was 43 and will probably increase once I do get to Canada as my Contacts expand. I planned getting Fiber as soon as I get out here from Shaw but have not heard much about them... Any Help would be great Thanks a Metric Butt D&D

I'm thinking of switching from Shaw to Teksavvy because their plans are so cheap =) Is their internet reliable? I know that they use infrastructures of other larger ISPs, so does it mean that the customers of the ISP that owns that infrastructure has packet priority over Teksavvy users?

I used to be satisfied with my High Speed 25 plan from Shaw for my internet. I always got promised speeds until today. Now, I can barely watch YouTube at 144p. Even the LTT forum took forever to load! Now I understand why people are hating on ISPs so much! Shaw speed-test is giving false results. Is this happening to anyone else?

I'm facing a dilemma for networking, I am moving my computer and desk to a different location in the house where there is no coaxial port for the modem. Normally my router is right near my rig and I can just use Lan. I would just use a really long Ethernet wire from the router to my computer but my mom doesn't like wires all over the house. So I discover a coaxial hole thing on the other end of the room so I can put my modem and router in but theres no signal. So my parents decided to ask Shaw to drill some holes in the wall and connect some coaxial from the cable box in the garage. But I read online that lengthy coaxial causes loss of signal. I am not willing to sacrifice my connection cause I game so I might just beg my parents to allow an ethernet across the house. But before I do, is Ethernet even better than Coaxial? lawl thx for reading this long half good explanation of the problem

Hello there good people, I was wondering if you guys would advice me on tuners to get (if it is even worth it) With my TV, I have to use a Shaw HD digital box to get all my channels. If I plug the coax cable directly to the TV, I will get only the "Basic" channels. No HD/No premium. So if I used a tuner, a digital tuner, would I get ALL the channels on my computer, or just the basic ones? I'm thinking about getting this: http://cetoncorp.com/products/infinitv-4-pcie/ Would it work with Shaw Cable? Would something else work? Thanks.

Hello Everyone! First post, so we will see how well this goes. My parents are still big into having cable and have been experiencing some slowdowns and issues with there current PVR. the DCT3416. Nw this thing is ancient, like 10-11 years old but the one they have was refurbished a few years ago. The machine is currently NOT under warranty so I am not worried about voiding anything. I my question is, has anyone had any experience with this machine and if so have they performed a hard drive swap on it. Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated as every forum post I read regarding it are giving me information from 2009 and earlier. Thanks in advance!
