A research published by by frontiers media's their scientific journal "Frontiers in Psychology" concluded that games probably increase sexism towards females in young male adolescents. They claim they corrected this for other factors such as religion, television exposure and other factors. their conclusion: they pointed out some weaknesses on their own study, for example that it just could be that sexist people play more video games. They also point out that the data points are very spread, which is a possible indication of an uncontrolled and uncorrected influence on the test (aka their coefficient of determination was low for the statistics under us), for example right-wing authoritarianism. Another thing they note is that there is an under representation of some types of schools that generally have a demographic that is of a higher social class(which apparently have a lower sexism rate). Another thing is that they used the statistics from a single item on the ISDR-2 (International Self-Report Delinquency Study 2) which is weakness, and measures only a certain type of sexism (motherhood or domesticity). the strengths of this research are that they included calculations for a lot of different influences (a multivariate analysis for the statistics under us). they note that more research is needed to experiment with what the effect of video games are in respect to sexist behaviors. and that it would be another reason to push the gaming industry towards more gender equality, since there already is evidence of body dissatisfaction caused by video games in woman including eating disorders and self objectification. woman after all are 48% of the gaming scene, so this isn't something to take lightly if true. their sample size was 13520 French youth aged 11–19 years on schools in Grenoble and Lion. they had a participation rate of 95% (this is very high for research) and their sample demographic in terms of age, sex and school level corresponded with urban france. Well what where their raw results? what do those results mean? i honestly don't know, im not that good of a statistical analyst because i only got it in high school. (muh math has no real world value muhhhh (except for when you want to actually understand scientific research instead of blindly following media reports about how good chocolate cake in the morning is to slim your belly n shit)) why is this relevant to us as a community with a lot of gamers? because how else are we, mother's basement dwelling nerds, going to find a girlfriend if it wasn't trough gaming. but what do you guys think? is this like those researches claiming that video games make you violent? or is there some merit to it? i think there definitly is some merit to it, but i do not know to what degree. woman emancipation came quite late in gaming compared to for example job participation. also please keep it civil, i know y'all are passionate about gaming but that shouldn't stand in the way of reasonable civil debate. I have recently come across yet another article talking about 'sexism and oppression towards women in technology' and it bothers me quite a bit. The topic is well blown out of proportion from what it really going on. Now obviously it is no lie that men dominate the technology field, however these media groups feel that it has nothing to do with individual choice/interest and is rather just blatant discrimination. One point that it talked about is the lack of women in this students computer science class in college. Now it is likely true that there is (the article said only 2), however this has nothing to do with discrimination at all. In modern days colleges and universities are prioritizing women for scholarships for those entering the tech field to try to merge the gap. I find it outrageous that society acts as if men just undermine someone for being a woman in the tech field for no reason. Any reputable business bases a job off of work ethic plain and simple. The article went on to say that "They felt they had to prove their worth daily just to avoid being thought of as the person who is there to bring the coffee.", which I am sorry but that is an incredulous fallacy. To say that someone needed to do their job to be respected should be a given to any employee male or female. Personally in my class there are about 15 men and 3 women. From what it seems only myself, 5 other guys, and 1 girl understand the topic and are also being instructed by a quite knowledgeable female professor. I guess my point is is that modern day media and the feminist agenda at its current state is simply just piling loads of crap on top of each other when the technology field comes into play. Here goes nothing. I am currently writing a thesis paper for my advanced composition college class, and the topic I have chosen is sexism in gaming. The purpose of this post is for me to do some independent research of my own. I am including several polls along with this for you guys to answer. There are a few things you do need to know. 1. Screenshots of this thread will be used in my college class as a separate part of the class (not included in the paper itself). By posting here you agree to this. 2. THIS IS NOT A THREAD FOR YOU TO DISCUSS AMONGST YOURSELVES, OR ARGUE. Please keep things civil. All I am asking is for you to answer some questions, and if you have a more complex opinion, by all means post it. What I do not want, is for you guys to argue with each other, or otherwise be uncivil. 3. This thread is being watched, and I have already gotten permission from the moderators to do this. I may add more questions to the polls at some point, if I can think of any more pertinent questions to ask. Suggestions and comments for what I could be doing better, or differently are welcome. I will be posting my paper at some point in another topic for anyone who wish to read the finished product. Overall, lets keep things civil. Christina Hoff Sommers, also known as the "factual feminist" has released a fairly short video (6 and a half minutes) about her views on sexism in the gaming industry. I encourage everyone to watch the full video and have an open mind. In my eyes, Christina Hoff Sommers is a true feminist, and I have a lot of respect for her. I think it's nice to see some people being rational about this whole thing and I hope this video will open some peoples' eyes, but I seriously doubt it will.
