I'm running a Windows 2016 server as a file and maybe a media server one day. My question is, do I need to have a an antivirus program installed or would windows defender be enough protection for it? I have Norton 360 on it right now (they gave me an extra key when they upgraded me). I'm thinking that windows defender should be enough but I just want some other opinions to make sure I have everything first.

At the OCP 2017 Summit, Microsoft has demo showing off their Server 2016 OS running on a Qualcomm ARMv8 48 core ARM processor. To make this happen, Microsoft had to port certain parts of the Server 2016 OS to work with ARM. It's a bummer that retail version won't work. Maybe one day they will release a this internal version out into the market, and we have more cpu choices to choose from. https://www.servethehome.com/here-is-the-demo-of-qualcomm-centriq-running-windows-sever-2016/

Ok, I'm quite lost since past 4 days. I was trying to promote my new server,(Wins2016) to migrate AD DC from old server (Wins2008r2). I followed this tutorial from this site, https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/canitpro/2017/05/24/step-by-step-migrating-active-directory-fsmo-roles-from-windows-server-2012-r2-to-2016/ but unfortunately I currently stuck at step no. 13. The error I received mentioned that there is no local domain found once I inserted my old domain name and clicked on select. Before we investigate further, let me explain the environment of mine. Firstly, the old server (Wins2008r2) was located on site B which is really far from Site A. Let's say Site A is the HQ and site B is a Branch site. I created a new server (Wins2016) for migrating purpose. Which is I want to replace the old server with a new server. From my site, Site A, I able to ping the IP and domain name. I also able to join the domain Site B as well. But on the next step, I got denied or unable to proceed the next step which is step 13 based on the link I given above. Site A and Site B communicating each other by using tunnel VPN. So, I'm here seeking you guys advice, is my method is correct or wrong? Do I miss a step or something else.

Hello, all members of LTT. Linus, I wanted to first start with saying how amazing your videos are on youtube. I have been watching your videos a lot, and I must admit that some actually made me chuckle! I am from UK, and I am new to this board, so please bare with me as I attempt to explain my issue in as much detail as possible. I have been hosting game servers for around 2 years on a dedicated server that is located in Pennsylvania, USA. We were running Windows Server 2008 R2 until around 2 weeks ago when somehow, someone managed to get in and install ransomware, that demanded we attach 2 files to get some sort of decryption key to get our files back. I am guessing that after they get the files, they will demand some sort of ransom. Suffice to say that we did not respond to their demands and we just had the entire server rebooted, after I had our hosts completely erase all the drives and reboot Windows from scratch. We had backups of our most important files, I had copies of them here at home. We are now running Server 2016. I am not sure how these hackers got in to our server, as we had a very secure password, and the system was fully up to date at the time. I have been working constantly to create a more secure server and have done what I can thus far, but I am wondering if there is anything that experts here can suggest to be able to make it almost impossible to get in to, in any way. To be able to better explain my situation, I have included a few screenshots that I took from the server before we had it rebooted for reference purposes, and wondered if anyone knows of a possible way that they got in to install this ransomware, something called "Mr.Dec". I have no idea what this is, but here are some screenshots for the experts to try and assist us to make the server as secure as possible to prevent similar attacks of this nature. NOTE: That this is in no way intended to be spam, I am trying to get some useful advice here, as so far, we have had a PSU failure that fried the entire rack we were located in (not hosts fault) and this issue that has become a real headache. Can anyone assist me please? Thanks in advance.

So I setup a CUPS print server on a Raspberry Pi to be able to print labels remotely and mobile carts throughout our company. I am still in the testing phase and I am having trouble added the printer through Server 2016. I can add it find on a Windows 10 computer but for some reason it cant communicate or connect with the CUPS printer on Server 2016. On the Win10 computers I can add them through File explorer and typing in the IP address and clicking connect since it is a shared printer on the network. I can also add them through direct IP through the windows device add as the following, http://192.168.2.239:631/printers/Bar_Code_Printer_T-3000_Plus Was wondering if any of you guys had experience with this before or anything that might help me.

Hello there, I've been trying to set-up VPN on my 'windows server 2016' for almost a week now. I am able to add the necessary role (Remote Access - DirectAccess and VPN) but cannot get the configuration part done because windows thinks that I have internet sharing enabled. And I'm 100% sure that I do not. I've gone through all the settings and made sure that it's disabled. and then, there's registry for it.. Note: when I set the "configuration flag" on 1, it "thinks" that setup / configuration is done but of course, that's completely useless because .. well, because it isn't configured with my "settings". There's decent amount of stuff on google, about this issue, but none of it helped with my problem. And this is why I decided to try here and ask for your advice. Thanks in advance!

Hello I have a poweredge r610 running windows server 2016 data center. I am not sure how to do this or if this is possible. I want to be able to have multiple people login using remote desktop to there local account on the server. For example I have 3 local accounts running Administrator,Finley,David David is a non administrator account Now I want to be able to login to Administrator account/desktop etc while Finley is logged in on Hess account doing Hess stuff on the server so I wont interfere at all with him and at the same time David or even more users can login to it. What I have seen from VMware and other virtualization software is that you can only give so mutch of the cpu and memory but with this I would like to give them all full access to it. The server it self has 192GB memory so would like for them to be able to use it instead of not being able to in VMware. I hope you can point in the right direction but I have no idea where to start for this.

I own 2 Poweredge R610 servers runing windows server 2016 datacenter. They are configured correct 1 of them is the domain controller and I can manage the second server from the Domain controller. But here comes the problem and a really wierd one I think. The domain those 2 servers are on is called Domain.local and my desktop and all other PC's in my home are on (workgroup) so in these case the servers and all other PC's in my network shutnt be able to see each other (servers to other pcs and pc to servers) But both the 2 servers don't see each other on the network but they do see my PC and my PC only no other PC in my network.

hello, im preparing for MCSA Windows Server 2016. Planning to do the 3 exams : 70–740, 70–741 and 70–742. I have checked the local institutions for these tests and their lectures are quite expensive and they require u to pay for exams separately. They do five 6 hour lecture sessions for each exam. Because it is expensive i tried to learn it on my own by videos from Lynda.com. Their lectures feel quite average to me but when i tried some practice questions i'm not getting many of them correct. I got to know that there's a book for each exam, so i got the book for 70–740 which is a huge 900 pages book. i really dont have a brain for studying, it has never gone well. i feel i'm more towards math subjects. Anyway with great difficulty, I have tried studying around 100 pages and i constantly keep forgetting what i studied in the first pages. By the time i hit the 900th page i would take like 2-3 months and im not sure if i will remember them. Now im wondering if this is doable as its been taking me too much time and I feel like i haven't made any progress either. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

hello, im trying to install server 2016 on a virtual machine in remote pc using windows deployment service and in that it requires to specify a wim file for install image and boot image. In my server 2016 CD im able to find a boot.wim but not a install.wim. instead in my cd i have 2 install.swm files known as install.swm and install2.swm. I checked any other options for preparing a wim file out of these 2 swm files and saw some tutorials where they used a software called Imagex to do such tasks however i was not able to find a reliable download location for it. i would appreciate if someone could suggest a way to get around this. Thank you

hi, i have created a virtual disk in my host server 2016 pc using diskpart and when i tried accessing this disk from another server 2016 running in hyper v, using the following diskpart select command it gives me a error saying "Diskpart has encountered an error: The network name cannot be found". im able to ping the IP of the host from vm and i have also tried replacing the IP in the command below with the computer name.still getting same error. i guess it is possible to do this with the hyper v GUI but i would like to try it in command line for learning. would be very helpful if u could help troubleshoot this.thank you select vdisk file="\\192.168.8.11\C:\storage4core.vhdx"

Two servers can't transfer files between each other on 10GbE
jkirkcaldy posted a topic in Networking
So I am having issues when trying to transfer files between my two servers. One server is a Dell R710 and the other is a whitebox build. Both are equipped with Mellanox Connect x2 10GbE adaptors (only nic the server can see, all others are dedicated to Hyper-V), both are running win server 2016, both are plugged into a Quanta LB4M switch. (2x10GB SFP+ 48x1GB RJ45) The speeds transfering from any other PC to either one of the servers is fine and seems to be working as expected. The issue is when trying to transfer files between the two servers themselves. I also have an issue now where I can't setup an iSCSI connection between them using the 10GbE connections. But have no problem connecting to other machines using the same connections. It's almost like, whilst the servers can see each other on the network, they can't talk to each other or there is something stopping them from transmitting too much data. I am sure it's something in the configurations that I have messed up somewhere, or a limitation of the switch (which would be annoying) but I have no idea where to start looking. Any help would be greatly appreciated.- 5 replies

Hello everyone My college professor is hoping to migrate our current System Administration class from Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2016. However, he is having a bit of trouble finding good material on the topic. If anyone can point to some reliable sources, topics, books, etc about Server 2016's basic workings as well as its features, especially the new ones that have been added since older version of Windows Server, it would be very much appreciated by him and me. Keep in mind that many of these sources would have to be directed towards people who don't have very much experience with Windows Server, if any at all. This is a first level college course. Something on par with the "-blank- for Dummies" series would be what we are looking for. Thank you! -Ken (and professor)
