Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I just noticed that Google seems to have removed a lot of TikTok links from its search results. In the screenshots that I've attached, when Googling "tiktok" no direct link to the main website (www.tiktok.com) comes up, and in the other when searching "khaby lame" none of the results link to his TikTok profile or any of his TikToks. I'm curious if it's just me or if others are seeing this odd behavior as well?

tl;dr: I think searching for solutions to Linux problems and searching for solutions to Windows problems are distinct skills, and I'd like (1) to enlist the help of the Linux community in compiling some advice on how to search for solutions to Linux issues here in this thread and (2) to propose that as part of the Linux-related LTT content that is no doubt forthcoming as a result of the ‘Linux challenge’, LTT consider making a video on the topic I heard Linus say on the most recent (October 1, 2021) episode of the WAN show that he has historically found it much harder to search for solutions to his Linux problems than it is to search for solutions to issues he runs into on Windows, citing a smaller userbase and a more diffuse, varied platform as likely reasons for this. That description of his experience really stuck out to me. It was a striking thing to hear because it's exactly the opposite of my own experience! As a more or less exclusive Linux user of around 10 years, I am always deeply frustrated when trying to research issues or tasks I have on Windows on the rare occasions where I have to use it (usually to test things for Windows developers I support at work). When I look into a Linux bug or configuration issue, I can usually drill right down to either a solution or a bug report in a few minutes. But when I have to figure out how to do something on WIndows, or why something is misbehaving, it seems like I usually find a muddled mix of solutions for probably-unrelated problems that present somewhat similar behavior and the descriptors people use (‘blank screen’, ‘black screen’, ‘crash’, ‘freeze’) are vague or sloppily used. Occasionally I'll think I've gotten lucky, because an application actually will spit out a seemingly-specific error code, but more often than not the actual meaning of that error code is unclear, it has multiple causes, or it's undocumented. It seems like either way, I always end up trudging through pages of mashed together, might-work, laborious solutions (‘I uninstalled and reinstalled 2 programs, toggled a registry flag, and rebooted 3 times and now it works on my machine!’) that don't really indicate that anyone involved has understood the nature of the problem or how the solution addresses it, which is unsatisfying as well as dodgy. In short, I find Windows troubleshooting tedious, laborious, and sometimes a bit hopeless. I imagine this is much how Linus feels about searching for solutions to his Linux issues! The jarring contrast between these experiences has led me to suspect that: Searching for Windows issues and searching for Linux issues are distinct (if overlapping) skills. So with that in mind, what are some tips Linux users here have on how to search for solutions to problems they might encounter on Linux, in ways that might differ from searching for Windows problems? I'll start below, in a format I suggest mimicking to make it easier to identify the tips in the thread.

Start search uses Windows Search which uses Indexing Service. By default, MS Indexes %programdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu - all well and good HOWEVER, by default, MS DOES NOT index %appdata% -- and in there is %appdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu - and if you check Indexing Options, you will find that no, MS does NOT include that specific directory. I've sent feedback using Feedback Hub on this, but for now, any items in Users' Start Menu folder and not the %programdata% Start Menu folder will cause delays, and it appears Start Menu will wait for those results, so even if your item is in %programdata%, your result will be delayed. NOTE you cannot enable indexing of other users' Start Menu locations unless you FIRST access their profile folder in Explorer to get access (their folders will show as not existing in the Indexing Options dialog as that dialog does not display folders the user does not currently have access to). ALSO, it will take a while for Indexing to update and include results from the users' Start Menu folder, so either find a way to force immediate Indexing, or let the computer idle for a half hour on AC power when testing this. In summary, to fix this, find Indexing Options in Start, hit Modify, browse to the \Users\{username}\AppData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu folder and hit its checkbox, then hit OK, then OK. To fix this for other users on your system, Open Explorer, browse to and select their \Users\{username} folder, click to get access, then repeat the above process to enable Indexing. Then wait for Indexing to update the location(s).

I've been using DuckDuckGo for several years. Most of the time it has been good enough. However, the past few years I have been able to tell that the search results are not natural, and censored in similar ways to Google. Searching for news or politics is the biggest most obvious example, but now even searching for some technology things is clearly manipulated, especially when you're searching for solutions to problems that the tech companies think are "features". Any kind of joke that is not politically correct is almost unfindable, and finding memes that I know already exist are also randomly way more difficult than they should be. Search is moving away from giving you what you are searching for, to giving you a combination of what "they" want to sell you, make you think, or simply give you the opposite of what you are looking for (this one is particularly strange). "They" being not the mysterious they, but people who manipulate search results, SEO, make laws that govern search, write the code behind the results, etc.. Amazon's search is a good example of pushing product, not results, and eBay also recently switched to a similar algorithm. Newegg search is somewhere in between. So, I'm looking to see what other options are out there. I've heard of Ecosia, Yandex, QWant and SearX. I use Ecosia at work because DDG is blocked (they won't tell me why), and it's about the same as DDG. I haven't given Yandex a solid test, for no particular reason. I still haven't wrapped my head around SearX yet, nor determined which independent search server is going to be better or worse than another. QWant is A French government search engine, and I'd rather stay away from anything government controlled, but they made the thing to disconnect from Silicon Valley. Obviously, Google and Bing are right out. Except I do sometimes search for some images on Google when I get frustrated with DDG.

I've been running win11 since about a week after official release and my search functions were working fine initially until they didn't a few weeks ago. Not sure when they stopped exactly because I really didn't feel like dealing with it at the time but it's with all search bar functionality including wifi password input. I have all updates available and am running OS Build 22000.120

I need to search through all my files. I was wondering if there is a feature where I can search through them and if I type in a word it will exclude that from coming up. Something like if I type in the word health all the over documents will come up but if health is in the title then it won't. Not sure if I'm conveying it properly, but hopefully you understand. Thanks in advance

Greetings and salutations, I am, new to this. I also need help finding a pc case that can more or less fit into certain dimensions, so here are the details. I have an atx mother board, with an atx power supply. Mounting a phenom ii 965 be. Two years ago I bought an 82 uhdtv, its thin, it was a pain to install and I am not moving it. The pc runs the games Im playing fine, some even 4k. Installed a shelf under the tv to hold a few things and left space under the shelf for a few crates for hardware. Not finished. Either way. My pc doesnt fit under the shelf or on it. These are the maximum dimensions under the shelf. 34,3h-24w. With cm. I can play a few cm with the width. I cannnot play with the hight. ¿Is there any case in the market that could actually comply with that dimension without costing 100 dollars? I will not change the motherboard or the power supply if i can evade it. Price range, less is better. Way over my head and wallet with retro stuff already. Many thanks in advance. P..D: Should have stuck with emulation and yes, the door can open and close almost to its full. I could just lay down the atx case buth something smaller would look better?

Hi everyone, I am a student in my second and last year of Master Computer Science Degree with a Computer Graphics and Sounds speciality. I came here with the hope to find some advices or ideas in order to find my next laptop or maybe show me another way to my problem. As I stated I study Computer Graphics and Sound, which mean I work on: Image Processing 3D Graphics (engines, image synthesis, raytracing ) Sound and Music Processing Some IA/Machine Learning So I'm working with quite resources needy stuff. Right now I have a MSI GE62 7RE Apache Pro(rev 1.0) with the base following specs: OS: Linux (Mint 20 Cinnamon) Windows 10 Home CPU : Intel I7-770HQ (4 cores at 2.800GHz) GPU: nVidia Geforce GTX 1050Ti (mobile) 4GB of video memory RAM: 8GB - DDR4-2400 Storage: 1x M.2 SSD Combo (NVMe PCIe Gen3 / SATA ) SSD (approx 125GB not sure on that ) 1x 2.5" SATA HDD HDD (1TB) I added an additional 2TB HDD drive by replacing the optical drive. I mainly use Linux daily for work mainly (although I also browse the net and I barely play on it) Good points: I love the keypress Screen is good I/O is fantastic: 1x Ethernet 1x HDMI 1x USB-C 1x USB-A 2x USB3.0 Mini-display port SD card reader Audio Jack In Audio Jack out I bought it in 2018 for quite a reasonable price (it was in promotion) but there are some issues that on a daily basis are becoming more and more hard to deal with 1 - The battery life is horrendous This one might be a problem related to Linux having sometime a mitigated support regarding nVidia cards driver however I've read on many instance that MSI laptop are know to have a bad battery life. But I can't afford having less than 1 hour of battery life while working on lightweight programming or even web-browsing. My laptop is almost always plugged-in even though I pay attention not to left it plugged all the time so I don't damage the battery life even more 2 - The keyboard layout As I currently reside in France, I have an AZERTY layout. But some keys are ridiculously placed, especially for programming. - the '<' and '>' keys are directly next to the 'ALT GR' which combined with how braces, brackets and parentheses inputs are working on a AZERTY layout often leave me typing nonsense. - in order to acces 'HOME' or 'END' I have to use the 'Fn+PGUP' or 'Fn+PGDWN' combos - 'DEL' , 'INS', 'PGUP' and 'PGDWN' are located juste above the numpad and they are just soooo small 3 -It get's toasty This laptop always had cooling issue, it would get hot even while idling. It's hot during winter, and outright burning my left wrist during summer. Out of fear of having heat related damage I had to buy one of those laptop cooling pad (the platform thing with fan inside) -> It takes a lot of space and can't envision to travel around with it in my bag It comes with a functionality that allows me to crank the fan to the maximum by a simple button press -> the noise is horrible, especially during class. Cooling is quite a spiny issue during summer, but brining along the cooling pad during class is just impossible because of the size and fan boosting is okay but not too long because of the noise Otherwise I'm quite happy with it I can do all I need, for now at least but I'm growing more and more tired of all the drawback I've evoked. That's why I've began searching for a new laptop but I don't really know for what I should go. What I know is the following: - I need a decent GPU for 3D and GPU accelerated computation. Nvidia might be more indicated I think. I don't know anything about AMD GPUs. - I don't really care about the CPU manufacturer, but AMD seems to be more and more promising (even if I heard here and there that Linux have some issues if AMD it seems?) - I would prefer separate audio in/out ports - Ethernet port - Better Storage solutions, I currently have 3 drive, two of them are HDD, not quite ideal - A better keyboard configuration, although the AZERTY layout might introduce some irregularities compared to QWERTY layout I just don't want to have weird key positions like having '<' or '>' being between the space bar and alt gr. I don't really mind if there is a numpad or not, I'll adapt - I know how to get around simple problems related to Linux and I'm patient enough to take the time to fix them, but I need a machine where hardware and software won't clash against each other This is not urgent per se, my current laptop will certainly carry me long enough to finish my studies, but once on the job market, I think it won't be sufficient enough. I want to thank anyone in advance for any piece of advice or some recommendations you all might have. If I forgot to add any details that would make my post clearer please do ask for it I'll try to respond to it as clearly as I can. I hope that my english was good enough for you to understand what I'm aiming for Edit: I forgot to maybe give a price range. I think I would go for a laptop between 1500 to 2000€ (that's roughly between 1775 to 2366USD) Thank you !

I am building a retro(ish) PC in a SilverStone SG02W-F case. When looking through the manual it mentioned an optional proprietary "cross flow fan" called the FX121. It would be a nice touch on the build but it is of course not necessary. I am finding it very hard to source one. Let me know if you can help me out?

My little sister is getting ready to start college and my mom wants to buy her a laptop. So far she has found this https://www.walmart.com/ip/Gateway-15-6-Ultra-Slim-Notebook-Carrying-Case-Wireless-Mouse-FHD-Intel-Core-i3-1115G4-Dual-Core-4GB-Memory-128GB-SSD-Tuned-THX-Audio-1-0MP-Webcam-HD/996759914 I'm concerned it's going to run slowly and the SSD to fill up quickly. My sister will likely only use it for streaming movies, browsing the internet, and schoolwork. We are working on a budget, so anything that's on the cheaper side and gives a good bang-for-the-buck would be appreciated.

my friend started his college studies in biochimestry and it appears his old laptop is not enough anymore (intel 7th gen with 8gb mem and a limping battery). its been a while since i looked for a laptop, and idk how to search for one without a dedicated GPU so help me please. his requirements: MUST not big (so 15.6 or smaller) num pad high battery life (high as can be but there's no specific number) 16gb ram or more i5/i7 ro r5/r7, powerful enough to run r. SSD 128gb or more (while total storage is x>256) PREFERED backlit keyboard screen with >=300nits and/or can go low brightness for energy saving. good kayboard (will write alot) a way to connect to a tablet\ipad (i guess to transfer handwritten notes from lectures and homework) spec that will last for the duration of the degree (3yr) or more NICE TO HAVES touch screen nice sound for movies OR bluetooth for headphones ram expansion slots USES: there is NO requirement for gaming since he games on a PS4. movies and web browsing the main use will be studies which means a lot of writing papers and some and coding in python and R. he said he'll code with linux but idk yet if he will need to install the OS on a partition, run it on a VM or use an ssh to a college server. so if there are any biochemists here who know if he needs a GPU to run R code on a VM then please let me know. the reason he prefers a new laptop is because he has a scholarship that gives him about 850USD to spend on a laptop, and the rest he will get out of pocket. i'd appreciate any suggestion on how to search, personal experience on specific models. but if you are someone who like to help find the laptop right where i am then bless your sould, and here is a link of a site that searches stores in my country with google translate (budget up to 4500NIS): https://www-zap-co-il.translate.goog/models.aspx?sog=c-pclaptop&_x_tr_sl=iw&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en&_x_tr_pto=wapp

This video shows comparison of two events. One from Microsoft a d one Google about AI integration in Bing and Google. Microsoft's integration with AI in Bing which I believe is using Chatgpt but will be a more advanced version upon release. Google created their own AI. Seems Microsoft is doing better at this stage. Microsoft has gotten around to put ads for their browser in search disguising them as "recommendations" It cannot find anywhere to disable this. Is there anyway to disable these ads? ive already disabled ads in the start menu, and then swapped to classic shell, but i just find the windows search feature usefull sometimes, when classic shell cannot find with im looking for. TLDR; How do i disable "recommendations" in the search bar.

Hi there Quick question. In our company when we search for VPN the standard Windows 10 search comes up. We would like to implement the function that when we search for VPN a specific application is shown in addition to the standard windows 10 Search results. Does anybody know how to implement this in a SCCM environment? Can we somehow give MetaData to the application in question so that it is shown in the search results? Renaming the application shortcut is not really a option as the application name will revert back to the old one when a application update is applied. See the two attached images for an example of what I mean. In this case I renamed the shortcut in the Start Menu Thanks for any help. Ben

Hello my fellow humans! I have encountered a problem with my Windows 10 Home search feature. It almost works. I can open it, I can search for things like 'controlpanel' and 'system information' an it works all fine and dandy but I can't search anything that I have installed myself, it just doesn't show up. I have tried doing the Index-properties thing and all that but it just doesn't seem to work. Anyone got any tips on how to fix this?

Hi everyone, My laptop running windows 10 was acting up showing BSODs and freezing, and I fixed it by first restoring it to an earlier restore point and by completely reinstalling Intel's HD Graphics drivers and the Nvidia drivers. Now, everything seems to work fine again except that I am not able to type in the Search bar or any of the default Windows 10 apps (Store, Groove, etc.). I've tried a number of CMD and powershell commands, reinstalling updates, Troubleshooting through control panel, attempts at a system restore, messing around with task manager forcing Search.exe to quit, but nothing worked. Does anyone have a suggestion to what to do here? Thanks in advance!

windows A very frustrating issue with windows search
DigitalDoofus posted a topic in Troubleshooting
So this issue began a couple days ago when my windows search (windows key plus name of program) began to refuse to show results for some programs and work for others, this is evident in the screenshots below. As I am the kind of person who likes to keep my desktop clean this is causing me alot of issues, Some of the windows programs refuse to launch now. It's gotten to a point that i have to use windows key + R to run a majority of the programs. Some programs will run like Dirt Rally, Whilst some wont show up at all like Rakuen Both are steam games and both have shortcuts in the same place. This is very frustrating and any help is appreciated as this is causing me more trouble than it may seem. Screenshot guide 1. showing a shortcut refusing to show up at all 2. Shortcut showing up but refuses to run (no matter how many times I shout or spam enter) List of things I've tried Powershell Stuff 1. sfc /scannow 2. DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restore Health 3. Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"} Task Manager stuff 1. Restarted Cortana Process 2. Restarted search progress File manager stuff 1. Attempted to name file C:\Username\Appdata\Local\Microsoft\Windows\UserClass.dat to UserClassdat.old (its open in system tried this through a command line same result) 2. Uninstalled all antivirus software 3. Rebuilt the ENTIRE index (this took ages) Basic stuff 1. Restarted PC 2. Checked for updates 3. Sacrifice a goat to satan None of these have worked and I'm not up to the idea of resetting windows on my laptop for what is the 7th time now. -
So i wanted to do a little project again about a old game i used to play, i found it a good project since it had the ability to compare items set prices and where you can find them etc. So the thing i stumbled uppon was that every item can have values like Attack, Defense, Critical. But most of them also dont have these stats and have completely other stuff like Health regen. And there there are a few items in a totally different category that SOMETIMES also have Health regen (Like a special item) The thing is i deal with alot of Stats which can be applied but mostly it really depends on that item and not on a category like Gear or weapons Even a goddamn pet can have Attack bonnusses. To make a Table with the Items in it and a column for every stat that CAN be there would be a bit much? or do i have to deal with it. Its faster for making search possibilitys. Also means that some items just have 30 empty columns and like 5 filled. Or do i just store an array in the DB with the values in it, which makes it a bit more pain to search and compare things since you have to extract that array all the time. Its a bit of a broad question but what it comes to is. I have alot of data and the data is per item different, normally its per category most of the gear would have the same thats than other gear parts. Here its not that case.

Hey everyone, so recently, I can't search fo stuff on my Windows 10 laptop anymore. I ran a troubleshooter for search and indexing, and it told me: So... I can't find Security and Maintenance (because search is broken), so could someone help me? Maybe offer a solution other than "yah well look over there, maybe there's something" like Windows did? Thanks, John EDIT: So I restarted (which I had done before, obviously) and it "got Windows ready", and now it works. So... cool?

So today I realized I can no longer hit the windows button and just start typing to quickly find something im looking for. I'm unbelievably annoyed. I tried looking up a fix and all I find is how to enable to Cortana TASKBAR search box. This is not what I'm aiming for. I want the search feature that is included in the windows menu. I would really appreciate any advice that will point me in the right direction. For example does the windows button menu have a specific name that I'm blanking on? I imagine this alone would improve my search results. Thanks guys Inadaizz
